Year A – Pentecost 10; Lectionary 18 – August 2, 2026 Pastor Megan Floyd             Romans 9:1-5   Grace and peace to you from God, who is faithful and trustworthy, from the Holy Spirit, who is with us always, and from Jesus Christ, the source of our salvation. Amen. *** In that passage from Romans that Tabitha just read… could you hear the heartbreak in Paul's words? Could you hear his anguish over his Jewish siblings who had not come to follow Christ? He muses on the possibility of giving up his own place with Jesus… if only it meant they would not be forgotten. Just as Moses tried to offer himself up as a sacrifice for his people after the regrettable golden calf incident… Paul offers himself. Except… God's gifts are not ours to trade, and his sacrifice is not needed, for our God is full of compassion, and God's promises are grounded in mercy. This brief passage from Romans marks the beginning of Paul's lengthy theological wrestling with how God's covenant with Israel remains trustworthy even as he has been called to proclaim the risen Christ to the Gentiles. It comes immediately after one of the most beloved passages in all of Scripture—that triumphant declaration that nothing in all of creation can separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord. And then… almost without warning, Paul is overcome with sorrow. He doesn't launch the next theological point with an argument… He begins with tears. This past Thursday evening, the book study group spent some time talking about Abraham Lincoln, which got me thinking. History reminds us that Lincoln's views on slavery developed over time. Early in the Civil War, he often spoke of preserving the Union as his highest constitutional duty. Yet after years of unimaginable suffering, after hundreds of thousands of lives had been lost, he stood before the nation at his Second Inaugural Address and called the country not to vengeance, but to healing: "With malice toward none; with charity for all." Winning the war was one thing, but… healing the nation was another. There is an enormous difference between winning an argument and loving people. Paul could have begun Romans 9 by praising himself for being on the right team… but instead, he says, "I have great sorrow and unceasing anguish in my heart." That is what the love of Christ looks like. …Paul's anguish is not rooted in judgment. It is rooted in love. He is a Jewish man whose heart is breaking because the people he loves most have not come to know Christ as he has… He has not stopped loving them. He has not written them off… He has not declared them beyond God's reach. His heart aches because they are still his family… and isn't that a feeling we know? Perhaps your heart aches for a child who no longer comes to church. A spouse who once believed but no longer does. …A sibling who walked away after being hurt. A dear friend whose faith quietly faded. Maybe you have sat in worship and instinctively looked toward the place where someone used to sit. There is grief in those empty places. Sometimes people leave because life pulls them in different directions. Sometimes they leave because they no longer recognize Christ in the church. And sometimes… and we must confess this honestly… sometimes they leave because the church has pushed them away. Our LGBTQIA+ siblings. People living with disabilities whose gifts were overlooked. People who asked hard questions. …People who never quite fit the mold. We print "All Are Welcome" on our signs... We proclaim it from our pulpits. But sometimes… unintentionally… our actions tell another story. However a person leaves… it hurts. …Paul understands that pain. But beneath Paul's grief is an even deeper question. Can God be trusted? If God's chosen people have not all embraced Christ, have God's promises somehow failed? That is the question Paul spends the next three chapters wrestling with. Truthfully, it is our question too. Can I trust God? …Can I trust grace? Can I trust forgiveness? …Can I trust that God's promises really are for me… or do I still have to prove myself? We live in a world that teaches us every blessing must be earned. Work harder. …Do better. …Be more successful. Even in the church, we quietly slip back into believing that if we pray enough, serve enough, forgive enough, then maybe God will be pleased with us. We do this… even as we know better. We preach grace… and yet we keep trying to earn what has always been God's gift. This is what drove Martin Luther nearly mad until he followed Paul's writing through the theological working out that finally led him… to grace. (…and a complete, unintended reformation of the Catholic church) Paul wrote, "I could wish that I myself were accursed and cut off from Christ for the sake of my people." It is a breathtaking statement… but Paul cannot save them any more than we save the people we love. Because Christ already has. Paul says, "I wish I could offer myself." …and Jesus says, "I already have." That is the Gospel… right there in a nutshell. Christ has already carried the burden we cannot carry. Christ has already accomplished the salvation we could never accomplish. Which means the fate of those we love does not rest on our shoulders. It rests in the hands of the God whose mercy is deeper than our understanding and whose faithfulness is greater than our fears. As theologian Mary Beth Anton reminds us, Paul ultimately must place his beloved people into God's hands… and so must we. Perhaps that is why I love what happens every time we share the meal of holy communion. The bread is broken, the wine is poured… Christ gathers us together. And yet… I suspect… every one of us can think of someone we wish were here with us. Someone whose voice used to join ours in singing. …Someone who drifted away. Maybe someone who was wounded by the church… or someone who is angry with God. Every Communion table has empty places we wish were filled. …Paul knows exactly what that feels like. But this table also reminds us of something else. This table does not belong to us. It belongs to Christ, and it is Christ who invites us… who welcomes us… and it is Christ who feeds us. Jesus Christ… who gives himself for the life of the world. The promises made here do not depend upon our worthiness. …They depend upon God's faithfulness. That is why Paul continues his wrestling all the way through Romans 11 before arriving at one of the most beautiful conclusions: "The gifts and the calling of God are irrevocable." (Rom 11:29) Not temporary or conditional. They are irrevocable. And then he goes even further: "For God has imprisoned all in disobedience so that God may be merciful to all." (Rom 11:32) Paul does not say God is merciful only to those who have earned it… He says God's mercy is for all… because every one of us stands in need of it. Our Jewish ancestors were the first recipients of God's covenants, God's promises, God's steadfast love. Through Christ, we have been graciously grafted into that same family tree. We have not replaced them; we have been welcomed alongside them into God's unfolding story of salvation. And the God who was faithful to Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Sarah, Rebekah, Rachel, and Leah is the same faithful God who remains true to every promise made in Christ. That is why theology should never become detached from compassion. If our understanding of God does not make us love more deeply, then we have misunderstood God.    (x2) Every page of Scripture tells the story of our God whose mercy continually reaches farther than we imagined. It tells of our God in Christ who feeds the hungry because he has compassion for them… stories of our God who refuses to abandon God's people. Story after story of our God whose love is stronger than our failures… whose promises are trustworthy even when we cannot yet see how they will be fulfilled. So today, we come to this table with gratitude, carrying the names of people we love. We bring our grief and our questions… and even our doubts. We come wondering how God is still at work in lives we cannot control. And Christ places bread into our hands and says, "This is my body, given for you." Not because we earned it, or because we understood everything. …But because mercy is who God is. And when we leave this place, we'll go… trusting what Paul finally came to trust: that the gifts and the calling of God are irrevocable… and that nothing will ever separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord. And because that promise is true, we can live with hope instead of despair, and with hearts that are continually shaped by the mercy we ourselves have received. Amen.

Then I will teach your ways to rebels, and they will return to you.” (Psalm 51:7–13 NLT) As we look at the trouble and turmoil in our country now, it isn’t hard to see that the United States is reaping the results of years of disobedience to God and His Word. We’ve worked hard to remove God and His Word from our courtrooms, from our classrooms, and from society in general. But our society’s troubles are all symptoms of a deeper problem. Simply put, it’s the effect of sin that we’re seeing. We’ve been so careful to arm ourselves against the enemy on the outside, yet we’ve forgotten the enemy on the inside. And we’ve missed one of the most important blessings of history. Abraham Lincoln made this proclamation in 1863: “Intoxicated with unbroken success, we have become too self-sufficient to feel the necessity of redeeming and preserving grace, too proud to pray to the God that made us.” Honest Abe was right. We are rotting from within. How will we solve this problem? Politicians can’t do it for us. While they can offer some help, their efforts won’t get to the root of the problem. The only answer is a heaven-sent spiritual awakening. The only answer is a revival. The words of the psalmist reflect the spirit necessary for a revival. “Purify me from my sins, and I will be clean; wash me, and I will be whiter than snow. Oh, give me back my joy again; you have broken me—now let me rejoice. Don’t keep looking at my sins. Remove the stain of my guilt. Create in me a clean heart, O God. Renew a loyal spirit within me. Do not banish me from your presence, and don’t take your Holy Spirit from me. Restore to me the joy of your salvation, and make me willing to obey you. Drawing on Abraham Lincoln's vision of inheritance, the tradition surrounding Mary's parents, and God's covenant with Abraham, this sermon explores the "moral scaffolding" that supports generations of faith. Race and the American presidency are not usually topics that are looped together, and this is also part of the point that Azari is making in the book, since presidents often try to elide racial politics and policy issues. Race is also not usually connected to presidential impeachments, but this is yet another key point that Azari raises, connecting racial progress, the backlash responses, and the subsequent impeachments. We also take on Mayor Mamdani's declaration that he intends to arrest Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu if he sets foot in New York City — based on an International Criminal Court warrant that the United States does not recognize. We explain why this is constitutionally illiterate, diplomatically catastrophic, and practically impossible. The Constitution gives Washington, not City Hall, the authority to conduct foreign affairs. The UN sits in New York City precisely because heads of state must be able to travel there safely. If one mayor can arrest one head of state, no head of state will ever return — and the UN becomes a ghost town. Mamdani's job is to serve the people of New York City. Destroying the diplomatic credibility of the most important city in the world is not that. All three of those positions cannot be simultaneously true. Free markets are capitalism. Socialism is the opposite of free markets. The same poll shows young Democrats under 50 support the Democratic Socialists of America with a net favorability of 54% while Democrats over 50 give the DSA only 28%. The Make America Healthy Again movement is the only political movement in the country with a net approval rating above 50% — and it's below 50% among Democrats. Apparently, Democrats don't want anything associated with Trump — including healthy food. We also push back on Republican strategists panicking about Iran hurting the party in the midterms. The American people are not bloodthirsty and they don't want endless wars. But there is a world of difference between opposing endless wars and surrendering to a regime that has chanted death to America every day for fifty years and was on the verge of obtaining a nuclear weapon. President Trump has made a reasonable case for a defined military objective. He could make it better. But rolling over is not an electoral strategy either. “What joy for the nation whose God is the Lord, whose people he has chosen as his inheritance.” (Psalm 33:12 NLT) A few decades ago, the 75th anniversary issue of Forbes magazine featured a theme that still resonates today: “Why do we feel so bad when we have it so good?” The magazine noted that most Americans live better than almost any other people on the planet, yet many people in our culture struggle with depression and an unfavorable outlook on life. Editor James Michaels wrote, “Why is this nation that marched so proudly into the 20th century slouching so dejectedly toward the third millennium?” The article went on to cite the alarming loss of values, absolutes, and meaning in contemporary life. What’s gone wrong? The person on the lowest rung of the economic ladder in America still has it better than most other people in the world today. We enjoy things that citizens of other countries can only dream about, yet we still have a sense of emptiness. Why? I think Abraham Lincoln answered that question well when he said, “We have forgotten God. We have forgotten the gracious hand which preserved us in peace and multiplied and enriched and strengthened us, and we have vainly imagined, in the deceitfulness of our hearts, that all these blessings were produced by some superior wisdom and virtue of our own.” President Lincoln was right. We have forgotten God. And it’s even truer today than it was when he made that proclamation in 1863. We’ve tried to push God out of the courtroom, out of the classroom, and, for all practical purposes, out of our culture. As a result, we’ve lost the joy, fulfillment, and sense of purpose that come from remembering, celebrating, and obeying our heavenly Father. The psalmist wrote, “What joy for the nation whose God is the Lord, whose people he has chosen as his inheritance” (Psalm 33:12 NLT). The flip side of that would be, “What misery for the nation whose God is not the Lord, whose people have rejected His inheritance.” And that’s where we find ourselves today. Will good ever prevail over evil? Or are we simply doomed to failure? The answer to America’s problems isn’t political; it’s spiritual. We need to turn back to God. We need to take Him at His Word. In 2 Chronicles 7:14, the Lord said, “Then if my people who are called by my name will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sins and restore their land” (NLT). Therefore, it is my belief that our country has two choices before it. One is judgment. The apostle Paul wrote, “Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, that he will also reap” (Galatians 6:7 NKJV). That goes for nations as well. The other option is the one we’ve been focusing on this month: a spiritual awakening or revival. And that’s what we need to pray for today in the United States of America. Wild camels roamed Arizona for decades afterward, and one became legend as the Red Ghost — a beast blamed for trampling a woman to death in 1883 and later seen carrying a dead man lashed to its back, a rider who eventually decayed until a human skull dropped from the saddle in front of a group of startled prospectors. An Arizona farmer finally shot the animal in 1893, still wearing the leather straps that had held its corpse rider in place.From there the episode turns to figures who kept shaping the world after they died. A gang of Chicago counterfeiters led by "Big Jim" Kennally plotted in 1876 to steal Abraham Lincoln's body from his Springfield tomb and ransom it for a jailed engraver, foiled by a Secret Service informant working for the very agency Lincoln himself had signed into existence. A grave robber broke into George Washington's crypt at Mount Vernon in 1830 hunting the president's skull and made off with the wrong one. The British philosopher Jeremy Bentham left instructions to have his body dissected and mummified, and it sits on display at University College London to this day. And in the ninth century Pope Stephen VI dug up his predecessor Formosus, dressed the rotting corpse in papal vestments, propped it up for trial, found it guilty, and had it thrown into the Tiber.Next comes Baltimore in 1871, where Elizabeth Wharton, a respected society widow, hosted General William Scott Ketchum in her home on Hamilton Place until he fell suddenly ill and died with twenty grains of tartar emetic in his stomach — fifteen is enough to kill. Police discovered she had bought sixty grains days earlier, and a financial advisor named Eugene Van Ness nearly died the same way after she served him a drink. Her forty-two-day poison trial in Annapolis exhausted the medical and chemical experts of the day, and after deliberating through the night the jury acquitted her of murder.The episode then crosses to Germany, where Johann Beringer, a celebrated professor at the University of Würzburg, spent 1725 collecting strange carved stones dug up on Mount Eibelstadt by teenage boys he had hired — figures of birds, lizards, comets, and the name of God rendered in Hebrew. Convinced they were the handiwork of God himself, he published a book on them called the Lithographiae Wirceburgensis, only to learn the nearly two thousand stones had been planted by two envious colleagues, J. Ignatz Roderick and Johann Georg von Eckhart, who thought him an arrogant know-it-all and wanted to humble him.From an academic hoax the episode moves to an unsolved horror. On September 21st, 2001, a child's headless, limbless torso surfaced from the Thames near the Globe Theatre, wrapped in orange cloth, and London's Metropolitan Police could give the boy no name but Adam. Forensic analysis of poison and minerals in his remains traced him to the Benin region of Nigeria and showed he had been paralyzed and drained of blood in what investigators believed was a muti ritual killing. Nelson Mandela made an international appeal for information, and traffickers including Kingsley Ojo and a caregiver named Joyce Osagiede were investigated, but no one has ever been convicted and the boy's true identity has never been confirmed.The episode carries that darkness into 1936 Tokyo, where Sada Abe strangled her lover Kichizo Ishida in an inn after a days-long affair, then took a kitchen knife to his body and carried a severed part of him away in her handbag. Her capture two days later set off a national obsession the papers called "Sada mania," and her testimony about killing the man she refused to share became a bestseller in a country where such candor was scandalous. She was sentenced to six years, served her time as a model prisoner, and vanished from public life sometime after 1970.The episode closes on a cold English night in January 1879, when a furniture hauler crossing Bridge 39 over the Shropshire Union Canal near the village of Ranton was charged by a shaggy, ape-like creature with glowing eyes that leapt onto his cart and terrified his horse. When he swung his whip at the thing, the lash passed straight through its body, and the creature bolted down toward the canal and vanished. The folklorist Charlotte Burne later learned from the village constable that the sightings had begun only days after a man drowned in that same canal, in a place where people believed a violent death could send someone back in the shape of a beast.

The Declaration of Independence turns 250 this year, and most Americans have never heard the full story of how it came to exist. Historian Dan Miller joins Chris Spangle to trace the forgotten gestational period of American democracy, from the Continental Association's economic boycott in 1774 to the moment communities across the 13 colonies first heard the Declaration read aloud in July 1776. Miller, founder of Historical Solutions and author of the weekly Americanism Redux series, argues the Declaration is best understood not as a groundbreaking document but as a catch-up document, one scrambling to match the cultural blast pattern Thomas Paine created with "Common Sense" six months earlier. He also makes the case that the most important section of the Declaration is not the philosophical preamble or the list of grievances, but the signatures, which did not yet exist when the document was first published. The conversation covers the role of women in the colonial boycott, Abraham Lincoln's discovery of consent as the core American principle, and why Lincoln located the birth of the union in September 1774, not July 1776.
