Scarcity, Politics, and Processing: The New Rules of Mining Investment

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 28, 2025 35:11

Recording date: 25th November 2025Derek Mcpherson and Sam Pelaez of Olive Resource Capital highlight critical developments reshaping mining investment, with asset scarcity and supply chain vulnerabilities emerging as defining challenges for the sector. The ongoing Anglo American situation exemplifies limited growth options for major miners. Despite BHP quickly dismissing weekend speculation about a renewed bid, the December 9th shareholder vote underscores how few tier-one assets exist that can materially impact large producers' portfolios. Pelaez notes these critical assets remain concentrated among major companies like Teck, Anglo, and Glencore, with many already partnered on world-scale Chilean copper projects. The executives emphasize that while acquisition targets are scarce, "eventually someone has to build something, and the biggest companies are best positioned to build something."Sovereign wealth funds are now competing for direct critical minerals exposure. The Qatar Investment Authority's memorandum of understanding with Ivanhoe Mines to support Democratic Republic of Congo growth mirrors earlier Chinese sovereign investments in tier-one African assets. This development signals Middle Eastern capital seeking strategic positioning in what Pelaez views as an emerging electrification commodities bull market, though he stresses there are "simply not enough investable assets and companies for everyone to get direct exposure."The gold equity market continues maturing, with Muddy Waters pitching pre-revenue explorer Snowline Gold at the generalist Sohn Conference—a significant milestone indicating institutional capital flowing beyond traditional mining investors. This follows sustained inflows into the GDX ETF and suggests generalists are increasingly willing to evaluate unprofitable developers. However, the most critical structural challenge remains Western processing capabilities. Despite domestic mining efforts, North American materials still require Chinese processing for battery precursor conversion. Pelaez emphasizes the West lags China "more than a decade" in rare earths, lithium, and graphite processing, creating supply chain vulnerabilities that policy alone cannot address. For investors, understanding complete processing pathways matters as much as resource quality when evaluating critical minerals projects.Sign up for Crux Investor: https://cruxinvestor.com

Send us a textA 15-year, 135-proof legend on the table with a harmonica legend in the chair—this one hits from the first clink. We invited our bandmate Marc to the studio and opened a 2023 George T. Stagg from the Buffalo Trace Antique Collection, then followed the whiskey wherever it led: into the heart of Chicago blues, the chaos of a second-row Zeppelin show in '75, and the craft behind carrying a box of harmonicas in every key.We start with the nose—char, leather, dark fruit, brown sugar—before tackling the palate's big swing from spice to sweetness and that long, oily finish. Along the way we break down the Antique Collection's fall releases, why these bottles drop before the holidays, and what makes this year's addition of a bonded Colonel E.H. Taylor such a buzz. If you've ever wondered why “burnt” can taste great in bourbon, how mash bills shape sweetness without wheat, or how to enjoy high proof without nuking your taste buds, you'll leave with practical tips you can use on your next pour.Marc's stories give the episode its backbone: Muddy Waters playing a high school gym, late nights at the Checkerboard Lounge, and the reminder that most classic rock owes a quiet debt to the blues. Our SIP rating (Shareable, Influence, Price) keeps us honest about scarcity and cost: Stagg earns big respect on influence, gets shared only with folks who can handle the proof, and remains a bargain at MSRP but a gulp on secondary. We end the night with a few harp notes, a nod to The Doors, and a toast to opening special bottles with the right people. If you enjoy high-proof bourbon, music lore, and straight talk on tasting, hit play, subscribe, and leave a quick review—what's your favorite pour for cold-weather nights?

Peter Wolf is a man with a million stories to tell. Thankfully he put many of them in his memoir, Waiting on the Moon: Artists, Poets, Drifters, Grifters, and Goddesses, released in March 2025 on Little, Brown and Company. In the hard-to-put-downWaiting on the Moon, Wolf is tells of his relationships and exploits with the likes of Muddy Waters, Van Morrison, the Rolling Stones, Sly Stone and Merle Haggard. Wolf is best known as the frontman for the J. Geils Band. Their 1980 album Love Stinks reached No. 18 on the Billboard 200 album chart, and the title track went to No. 38 on the Hot 100. The big breakthrough came in 1981 with the album Freeze-Frame, which reached No. 1 on the Billboard 200. The title track hit No. 4 on the Hot 100, and the single “Centerfold” spent six weeks atop the Hot 100 in 1982.  Wolf left the Geils band in 1983 over creative differences. The band released one more album in 1984, and Wolf released his first solo album, Lights Out, in 1984, which rose to No. 24 on the Billboard 200. That album featured such guests as Mick Jagger, Elliot Easton of the Cars, G.E. Smith and Ed Stadium.  His latest and eighth solo album, A Cure for Loneliness, came out in 2016.  Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

In this episode of 'Seeing Them Live,' Charles and Doug explore the intersection of True Crime and Rock and Roll with guest Jim Berkenstadt, also known as the Rock and Roll Detective. Berkenstadt has a worldwide reputation for uncovering the hidden histories and mysteries within popular music. His exhaustive investigative works span from serving as a historical consultant on several high-profile documentaries to publishing award-winning books that delve into the enigmatic corners of rock history. Berkenstadt recounts his initial foray into rock investigation during eighth grade when he explored the 'Paul is Dead' conspiracy surrounding Paul McCartney. This early experience sparked his lifelong passion for becoming a rock detective, leading to a prolific career that has seen him solving many mysteries in the music world involving elements of True Crime. Jim shares stories about attending memorable concerts, including a terrifying but exhilarating Wings concert in 1976 where pyrotechnics blew him and his friend off their chairs. He also recalls sneaking into a sold-out George Harrison concert and the emotional tribute concert for George Harrison organized by Eric Clapton.Berkenstadt discusses his book 'Mysteries in the Music: Case Closed,' which tackles complex topics such as the FBI's extensive and somewhat absurd investigation into alleged obscene lyrics in the song 'Louie Louie,' the CIA's possible involvement in Bob Marley's death, and the Beach Boys' interactions with Charles Manson.Additionally, Berkenstadt's book 'The Beatle Who Vanished' narrates the incredible yet true story of Jimmy Nichol, a drummer who substituted for Ringo Starr during a Beatles tour, only to mysteriously disappear from the public eye. The discussion also covers Berkenstadt's involvement in music documentaries like 'George Harrison: Living in the Material World' and his upcoming work on Nirvana's Nevermind album. Through a combination of rock legends, government intrigue, True Crime, and lost histories, Jim Berkenstadt brings to life the dramatic and captivating interplay of True Crime and rock and roll.BANDS: Billy Preston, Buddy Guy, Eric Clapton, Foo Fighters, Garbage, Green Day, Jeff Lynne, Monty Python's Flying Circus, Muddy Waters, Nirvana, Ravi Shankar, Ringo Starr, Smashing Pumpkins, The Beatles, The Euphorics, The Quarry Men, The Rainbows, The Rolling Stones, The Spotnicks, The Traveling Wilburys, Tom Petty, Traffic, Wings.VENUES: Chicago Stadium, Edgewater Hotel, Royal Albert Hall, Soldier Field, Sunset Marquee, The Checkerboard Lounge. Kyle Rowland and Kenny Neal join me on episode 143 for a retrospective on James ‘Mr Superharp' Cotton.Born in 1935 on the Bonnie Blue plantation in Mississippi, James Cotton received his first harmonica from his mother and learnt by ear, captivated by Sonny Boy Williamson II's King Biscuit Time broadcasts. From nine to sixteen he lived with Sonny Boy, then played with Howlin' Wolf before holding the harmonica chair in the Muddy Waters' band for twelve years. Striking out solo in the late 1960s, he spent the next forty five years releasing acclaimed records and delivering explosive live shows, powered by a tireless work ethic and boundless energy. He earned two Grammy Awards—one with Muddy Waters and one for a solo album—and garnered further nominations.A lifelong devotee of the blues, he gave back generously in his later years and became like family to those closest to him.Links:James Cotton website: http://www.jamescottonsuperharp.comDiscography: http://jamescottonsuperharp.com/discography/Kenny Neal's website: https://kennynealmusic.com/Kyle Rowland's website: https://www.kylerowlandblues.com/James Cotton and Seydel harmonicas: https://www.seydel1847.de/jamescottonVideos:Bonnie Blue documentary trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lidw_qH1D4QSeydel James Cotton tribute with lots of photos: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KQJrI0oioKE&list=RDKQJrI0oioKEComplete This Order song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e09HOfVB21g&list=RDe09HOfVB21gKyle Rowland with The James Cotton Tribute Band in 2022: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LZfajGFBE74&list=RDLZfajGFBE74A ten year old Josh King singing Hoochie Coochie Man with Cotton: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=blBAqb_jyn0&list=RDblBAqb_jyn0The James Cotton Band Live at North Sea Jazz in 1983: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2CVvNe0OpZY&list=RD2CVvNe0OpZYPodcast website:https://www.harmonicahappyhour.comDonations:If you want to make a voluntary donation to help support the running costs of the podcast then please use this link (or visit the podcast website link above):https://paypal.me/harmonicahappyhour?locale.x=en_GBSpotify Playlist: Also check out the Spotify Playlist, which contains most of the songs discussed in the podcast:https://open.spotify.com/playlist/5QC6RF2VTfs4iPuasJBqwT?si=M-j3IkiISeefhR7ybm9qIQPodcast sponsors:This podcast is sponsored by SEYDEL harmonicas - visit the oldest harmonica factory in the world at www.seydel1847.com  or on Facebook or Instagram at SEYDEL HARMONICAS--------------------------------Blue Moon Harmonicas: https://bluemoonharmonicas.comSupport the show

John Heath joins Justin as they get any final thoughts we've had off their chests after having sat with Peter Guralnick's "The Colonel & The King" a bit longer, watching other fans' reactions start to stream in over the last month or so. Consider this a follow-up to both the TCBCast and EAP Society reviews, as well as John's excellent Atomic Wax breakdown (if you hadn't seen it - here's the link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jdxN0xeTT1o) The guys also take a look at a number of things Peter has stated in public interviews surrounding the book's release and whether they stack up with what he writes in the book or go further. For Song of the Week, John's got HIS mojo working as he walks us through the deep Memphis lore around "Got My Mojo Working" - the 1970 warm-up jam on an old blues number (perhaps most famously known from Muddy Waters but previously done by Ann Cole) which Elvis turned into a medley with Priscilla Bowman & Jay McShann's R&B hit "Hands Off." Elvis's version surfaced with added overdubs on the Love Letters from Elvis album in '71 and the unedited version on "From Elvis in Nashville" remains a rocking treat. Justin's Song of the Week is the underrated "Anyone (Could Fall in Love With You), written for inclusion in "Kissin' Cousins" but removed from the production - yet still left on the soundtrack album. However, its songwriters' most famous non-Elvis hit from the 1940s - which Elvis almost certainly knew - might inadvertently give us a small insight into Elvis's gentle, one might say even "Spot-y," vocal approach. Gossip, Tittle Tattle, rumors, hearsay, dishing the dirt, idle talk, back stabbing…. It's not one of the seven deadly sins, but maybe it should be. How many friendships, how many marriages, and how many jobs have been lost through spiteful blather? In this episode of Double Trouble Howlin' Wolf and Gene Pitney testify to the adverse effects of pitiless small town talk. Mind your own business, “they” say; “discretion is the better part of valor,”, “People in glass houses shouldn't throw stones,” etc. I'm sure you've heard them all, but how's your ratio of disciplined restraint? That's a lesson I had to learn the hard way. Gossip may feel like a way of getting closer to someone by sharing intimacies. But, the next thing you know that person tells the other person, and YOU'RE the odd one out. Best to maintain a lock-jawed policy of trust. HOWLIN' WOLFWho's Been Talking, from 1960, swings it's savage message with a Calypso beat. Chester Burnett, the blues master trained by Charlie Patton and Sonny Boy Williamson; the discovery by a 19 year old Ike Turner for Sam Phillips and Sun Records; the neck and neck competition with Muddy Waters, and inductee into the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame delivers his self-penned diatribe against the effect of cheap talk with his usual lupine swagger. “Who's been talking?” Wolf wants to know, and when he finds out, whoa, the owner of those loose lips better hide, or they might get their jaw broken. GENE PITNEYTown Without Pity was a 1961 Kirk Douglas film with an uncredited, re-written screenplay by the blacklisted Dalton Trumbo, featuring a score by Dimitri Tiomkin, who also composed the theme for High Noon, among others. Town Without Pity was crooned by Gene Pitney, the heartthrob with the 3 octave range - and became Pitney's first top 40 single. He garnered many accolades in a career which also boasted bull's eyes as a songwriter, composing hits for Ricky Nelson with Hello Marylou, and Bobby Vee's Rubber Ball. In this bluesy lament in a minor key, Pitney tugs at our heart strings as he bemoans the besmirching of his purest love by the wagging tongues of spite.

After making some early cuts under the name Mumbles, he made numerous recordings as a sideman in the 1950s, including the blues harmonica classics Easy and Walking By Myself. Walter enjoyed a resurgence on the back of the blues boom in the 1960s, touring the US and Europe and playing with various bands including the Willie Dixon Allstars, Fleetwood Mac and Johnny Winter. In the 1970s he made some more albums under his own name, including with the Johnny Nicholas band, and also appeared on the Grammy winning Muddy Waters album, I'm Ready.Big Walter played up until his death on December 8th, 1981, and was inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame the following year. And without doubt left his legacy as one of the greatest blues harmonica players of all time.Links:Discography by Stefan Wirz: https://www.wirz.de/music/horton.htmInformation on Big Walter: https://www.encyclopedia.com/education/news-wires-white-papers-and-books/horton-walterBob Corritore photo gallery: https://bobcorritore.com/photos/big-walter-horton-photos/Videos:Hard Hearted Woman, States Records: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=89P8ZMfTHfkSolo recording from Germany: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h6RkAlhX7fgWalter ‘appearing' in The Blues Brothers: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nUUyFrHERpUWalter Horton discusses using his hands in Ronnie Earl's apartment: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KX0Eu5LqexcPlaying That Aint It & Down Yonder with Ronnie Earl: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FghNW94YUaM&t=90sPodcast website:https://www.harmonicahappyhour.comDonations:If you want to make a voluntary donation to help support the running costs of the podcast then please use this link (or visit the podcast website link above):https://paypal.me/harmonicahappyhour?locale.x=en_GBSpotify Playlist: Also check out the Spotify Playlist, which contains most of the songs discussed in the podcast:https://open.spotify.com/playlist/5QC6RF2VTfs4iPuasJBqwT?si=M-j3IkiISeefhR7ybm9qIQPodcast sponsors:This podcast is sponsored by SEYDEL harmonicas - visit the oldest harmonica factory in the world at www.seydel1847.com  or on Facebook or Instagram at SEYDEL HARMONICAS--------------------------------Blue Moon Harmonicas: https://bluemoonharmonicas.comSupport the show

When blues powerhouse Albert Castiglia crossed paths with Bill Murray, neither could have predicted the musical partnership that would follow. In this captivating conversation with Greg Koch, Castiglia pulls back the curtain on how a Hollywood legend became his unexpected bandmate through a series of serendipitous connections that began with Murray's brother John."If Bill Murray wants to play in your band, you let him in your band," Castiglia remarks with characteristic humor. But beneath the celebrity factor lies a genuine musical connection that has taken them from intimate clubs to prestigious venues like Red Rocks. Far from seeking the spotlight, Murray approaches their collaboration with refreshing humility, insisting on equal billing and content to play percussion while occasionally stepping forward for a song. The audience response has been electric, with fans sometimes appearing in Ghostbusters costumes, moved to tears by Murray's magnetic stage presence.Castiglia's own journey through the blues landscape reveals the persistence required to build a sustainable career. From his early influences (discovering blues through Clapton and Johnny Winter's productions with Muddy Waters) to navigating the catch-22 of needing both a record deal and booking agent simultaneously, he speaks candidly about industry challenges. After cycling through five agencies, finding the right representation finally allowed him to expand from 100 shows annually to between 150-200 performances a year. The conversation touches on deeper themes of artistic growth, with Castiglia recently incorporating Coltrane's "Afro Blue" into his setlists after being inspired by Derek Trucks. He also reflects on lifestyle changes that have sustained his longevity, embracing sobriety after COVID and taking up boxing and Kung Fu to maintain his energy for grueling tour schedules. "I do this for the memories," he explains, capturing the essence of why musicians endure the hardships of the road.Ready to experience a genuine conversation between two musicians who've weathered decades in the business? Peter Wolf didn't want to write the typical rock and roll memoir filled with lurid tales and score settling. Instead he wanted to write a collection of short stories that stem from his serendipitous encounters with everyone from Marilyn Monroe to David Lynch. Peter tells Marc how he wrestled with his own memories to write the book, how he drew from his friendships with Bob Dylan, Muddy Waters and John Lee Hooker, and how he got right with the topics he wanted to avoid, namely his time with The J. Geils Band and his marriage to Faye Dunaway. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
