Barnie's Coffee has gone through a lot of changes over its 43 years in business. The name comes from one of the founders of the business, Phil Barnie Jones. “He was an inventor himself,” said Shannon Wolfgang, director of marketing for Barnie's. “And he was like, ‘You know what, no one's doing flavored coffee.'” According to Wolfgang, Barnie's became one of the first companies to offer flavored coffees. “You can have all the flavor within the coffee and you don't have to worry about adding the sugar adding the creamers or adding the whipped cream and all that goofy stuff because that's not really what we're about,” she said. The company saw nationwide expansion at one point, predating Starbucks, opening several locations inside malls across the country. “Then our investors and our business managers decided to change plans and then at that point, we closed down our mall locations and we decided to keep our flagship location (in Winter Park),” Wolfgang said. “Then we kind of just did our online store for barniescoffee.com.” In addition to its online sales, the brand is also available is several supermarket chains, including Publix and Winn Dixie, among others. Barnie's is also now focused on partnering with Central Florida businesses. “We've already had our Publix of flavored ice cream(s),” Wolfgang said. “Then there's Ten10 Brewery who's doing a beer with us. We have Se7en Bites, who's done a brownie with us and also a cookie with us with the flavoring. So we have a lot of local collaborations.” The company is also working with colleges in the area, such as the University of Central Florida. “So we closed down all of the mall cafes and now we're opening businesses or collaborating with businesses through schools and the reason we did that was so that we could also do a give-back donation to the school,” Wolfgang said. “We created three different blends with (UCF) — flavored coffee, like our Pegasus blend — and if you purchase that coffee, not only at the UCF cafe that they have, but purchase it online from Barnie's Coffee, $1 of that bag actually goes back to their food insecurity program.” The company also works with Stetson University, Rollins College and the Orlando Science Center with similar give-back programs. Despite the brand's reach, Barnie's is a relatively small operation. Its roasting facility only has 13 employees “doing everything by hand,” according to Wolfgang. On the latest episode of Florida Foodie, Candace Campos and Lisa Bell learn all about the coffee roasting process. They also get a peek at how Barnie's flavors its coffees. The Orlando Gaming community continues to grow and it's events like the Mega Health Jam that help to make it happen. April 12th - April 15th will welcome the first annual Mega Health Jam to Orlando. The brainchild of Medspeaks Kelli Murray and the Orlando Game Space' Kunal Patel the event will bridge and unite our thriving communities of Health Care and Technology in an effort to create wellness and health care technologies ALA game jam style. Rather than write about it we have set aside episode 12 of This is Orlando to fill you in and create awareness. Here are the main points of interest;Thursday night April 12th and the Cinedome inside of the Orlando Science Center we kick off with a night of chats, networking and fellowship. Get to know the players involved, grab a bite and a drink and jump the gun to start crafting pitches for the jam. Friday night we move over to the Guidewell Center at Lake Nona, a state of the art co working lab that houses a good portion of those Orlandoans who work in Medical Simulation. Friday night is pitch night and will decide the focus of the projects that will take place over the next 48 hours. Come prepared with your thoughts and be sure to link to the web site for categories and ideas to get your brain turning in the right direction. Sat - Sun we develop and mingle with the many sponsors who will be available at booths throughout to talk about their connection to the simulation and technology world. Booth space is still available and you can reserve your space by visiting the web site. What excites me the most about this event is the opportunity our gaming community has to show the city and the world what we are capable of doing with gaming technology. It seems as if we fight every day for respectability among the tech community and little do they know how much brilliance abounds. This event is great for students and recent graduates who want to network, add to their portfolios or create new skills. Tech business owners who have a service or product they want known. Health care providers interested in new technologies to benefit their staff and patients. Wellness coaches and advocates and anyone who wants to learn more about where health care is headed and how technology can change our daily lives in a positive way. OK, that's enough, listen to the podcast to get the full picture. If you can't see how this brings a splash of color to our local Orlando picture then give me a ring or drop me a note so we can discuss. We talk a lot about bringing and providing content to our local scene and I applaud Kelli and Kunal for actually taking the time and making the effort to actually do something for the benefit of us all. BTW - Thanks again to my Man Carlos for setting all of this up and making it happen. Be sure to check out his page for information on his CD releases and more. P.S. The Ghostbusters are called to the Orlando Science Center where some artifacts have been acting strangely. With the help of the security team, they quickly discover that the recent PKE surges across the city have all originated from this point. The new artifacts along with a phone call from Dr. Stantz and Dr. Spengler help shed some light on this “Obsidian Serpent” that the guys have been hearing so much about. Of course, it’s all bad. War, human sacrifice, and cannibalism for starters. Followed closely by the enslavement of all humanity until the world ends, then an afterlife of unending worship. Turns out, the only thing worse than knowing the details of the apocalypse, is also knowing that it’s going to happen today, and you started it.
