We often put off what we want to do for the sake of doing what we “should” do.  Yes, be responsible. AND Listen to your desires. Listen to the subtle call that says, “over here!”   It is possible to do both - be responsible AND do/get/have/be what you want.   It all starts with a decision and the how sorts out.   What's calling you? What are you hoping for that you've put off?   What's whispering, “Over Here…!”

2022 marks the 5Oth Anniversary of one of the most popular musicals in the history of Broadway – GREASE.  My guests on this episode are two of the many stars that emerged from the original Broadway and touring productions of that long running, record breaking show – Barry Bostwick & Marilu Henner. Marilu Henner's association with Grease goes back to the very beginning when as a teenager she created the role of “Marty” in the original Chicago production of the show. A few years later she played the role again in the First National Tour and then eventually on Broadway. Her other appearances in Broadway include the plays and musicals, Over Here!, Chicago, The Tale Of The Allergists Wife, and she starred in the National Tour of Annie Get Your Gun in 2000. She is of course best known for her role on the hit TV series Taxi, as well as her many other film and television appearances. Barry Bostwick created the role of “Danny Zuko” in the original Broadway production of GREASE for which he received a Tony nomination. He has appeared in seven Broadway plays and musicals including his Tony Award winning performance in The Robber Bridegroom. He has starred in dozens of film and television productions including the mini-series George Washington, the hit sitcom Spin City, and as “Brad Majors” in the cult classic the Rocky Horror Picture Show. Both Marilu and Barry have contributed anecdotes and memories to a new book that was released just last week, entitled Grease – Tell Me More, Tell Me More – Stories From The Broadway Phenomenon That Started It All. In this delightful conversation Marilu shares impromptu performances of songs that never made it out of the Chicago production, and tells us why she turned down her initial offer to be in the show in New York. You will also hear about the wild times and amorous adventures that a dynamic young cast of future stars got up to on tour, as well as the immense contribution of Grease's choreographer Pat Birch, the infamous tight pants that Barry thinks helped win him a Tony Award, and much, much more. It may be hard for some of us to believe, but this past Valentine's Day – Feb 14, 2022 – marked the 50th Anniversary of the New York opening of the musical GREASE, at the Eden Theater on 2nd Avenue. And next week, June 7, will mark the 50th Anniversary of its official move to Broadway.  My guests this week are that Grease's original producer, Ken Waissman, and original director, Tom Moore, who along with Adrienne Barbeau (the original “Rizzo”) are the editors of the new book : Grease – Tell Me More, Tell Me More – Stories From The Broadway Phenomenon That Started It All. Ken Waisman is a Tony Award winning producer who made his Broadway debut with the play And Miss Reardon Drinks A Little. In addition to Grease he went on to produce Over Here! starring the Andrews Sisters, and the long running plays Agnes Of God, and Torch Song Trilogy. Tom Moore is a leading theater, film and television director whose work on Broadway includes his debut with Grease, Over Here!, Moon Over Buffalo starring Carol Burnett, and Night Mother. Their new book is made up of a the personal, behind-the-scenes memories of the show's creative and production teams, as well as scores of cast members from Grease's original cast, five national tours, and record breaking eight-year run on Broadway. In this episode you will hear about how Ken discovered the show in a ramshackle community theater production in Chicago; why Ken chose Tom to direct the show instead of Michael Bennett; how Tom almost turned the show down; and how together they discovered and cast more future stars than probably any other musical in history! Grease alumni include Adrianne Barbeau, Barry Bostwick, Jeff Conaway, Carole Demas, Greg Evigan, Peter Gallagher, Richard Gere, Marilu Henner, Judy Kaye, Rex Smith, Patrick Swayze, John Travolta, Treat Williams, and Adrian Zmed. As well as the future Broadway directors Walter Bobbie, Scott Ellis, and Jerry Zaks. Has any other show produced that many stars?  Even if Grease is not your favorite show, I feel certain that you will be fascinated by their stories of how the show came together, as well as the casting stories of John Travolta, Patrick Swayze and Richard Gere. Broadway Nation is written and produced by me, David Armstrong. Do you have an encore career in you? An interest you've always wanted to pursue, if only you had the time? Maybe you've dreamed of becoming an author in your second career. Our guest, Jim Hockenberry, retired from a successful corporate career at 55 and did just that, writing not one book, but three. He's the author of an award-winning historical fiction trilogy. Jim joins us from Princeton, New Jersey. ________________________ Bio James Hockenberry, of Princeton, NJ, grew up in Bronxville, just outside of NYC. Bronxville is featured in a chapter of his first thriller, Over Here. James has authored an award-winning "World War One Intrigue Series". The historical fiction series interweaves three of his long-time passions: history, literature, and his German-American roots. He has lectured locally on World War One, including at the State Library in Trenton and the Princeton Present Day Club. A career financial executive, with degrees from Lafayette College and Columbia University, he began as a CPA with Ernst & Young. After moving to W. R. Grace, they transferred him to their European Headquarters in Lausanne, Switzerland where he lived for 15 years. He returned to the US, put his financial career behind him, and began to research history and write thrillers. For the last fifteen years, he has run the Princeton Chapter of the Financial Network Group (FENG) with over 2,200 members. ________________________ Wise Quotes On Becoming an Author as a Second Act "Well, let me just say first, it's not really a question of how I did it, but why it took so long. I had a successful and rewarding business career coming out of graduate school and that took me to age 55. At that point, I was financially secure and I wanted to adjust my life and balance priorities. I had always wanted to write a book. So I made the change from a financial executive to a writer and I never looked back. So I never really walked away from my financial career. What I would rather say is it reached a natural conclusion and I moved in a different direction. One of your guests in the past (Dr. Barbara O'Neill) has talked about the term, FIND - F-I-N-D - Financial Independence, New Directions - and that's what I've done. But I like to use the term re-tire (re- dash- tire). What I mean by that is you put four new tires on your car, and drive off to your future life." On Networking "And I would say if there's a motto for networking, it's 'What goes around, comes around.'  Somebody helps somebody, and they help somebody else, and that person might help me back. And for me, it's a way of giving back on what I call skills of life that I have learned. Which is interesting because I brought some of those skills back into my author gig. Some of them might be personal branding. It's very important for an executive to be able to do that. And if I learned one thing it was this: the only thing you can control is how you feel about things. If you go into a pitch to an agent, or if you go into an interview, and you've got a bad attitude, you're not going to go anywhere. Writing is a people business. Finance is a people business. You've got to have a good attitude - and that's really important how you shape it." On Trying New Things "I've got friends coming out of corporate America who are bored. They never had another interest. They can't find anything to do. It's really funny to me, very sad. I've always had new ideas to pursue. Another thing is you got to embrace new things, learn new skills. I don't care what that is - if it's woodworking, if it's painting, or if it's gardening, which my mother loves to do in her later age. For me, it was writing books. And so what you've got to do is you got to experiment. You've got to test things...The other thing that I think is very important,  I've learned this again through FENG, is you've got to reach out to other people. They can help you. So for example, if you're not sure where you want to go,

BROADWAY NATION

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 21, 2020 26:01

In this episode I continue my review of Broadway’s Nostalgia Craze of the 1970s and beyond. Many of the musicals that emerged in the late 60s and very early 70s were also influenced by the incipient Nostalgia Craze, even if overall their shows were decidedly modern. HAIR, Jesus Christ Superstar, Godspell, Two Gentlemen of Verona, Applause  all included musical sequences that recalled the Vaudeville era and Silver Age of Broadway. So nostalgia was in the air, and then No, No, Nanette sent it into the stratosphere! And all of this was before the nostalgia craze expanded to include the 1950s. Almost exactly one year after the premiere of Nanette the musical Grease opened on Broadway. It became wildly popular and ran for eight years on Broadway passing Fiddler to become the longest running musical of all time until A Chorus Line passed it. And Grease’s enormous success set into motion a 1950s wing of the nostalgia craze by inspiring both the movie American Grafiiti (1973) and the TV show Happy Days (1974). The success of Nanette led directly to a 1973 revival Irene, the smash hit musical that opened in 1919 and became the longest running musical of its day. And Grease led directly to Over Here !, the 1974 musical in which the director, choreographer and producers of Grease attempted to do for the 1940s, what their previous show had done for the 1950s. The two still living Andrews Sisters, Patty and Maxine, where enticed to star in Over Here!, and the Sherman Brothers, of Disney fame, provided a terrific set of brand new very authentic sounding Big Band era style songs for them to swing. Broadway’s Nostalgia Craze continued with a hit 1975 revival of the Jerome Kern Princess Theater musical Very Good Eddie, then in 1979 both the 1928 Edie Cantor vehicle Whoopee! and the 1930’s style classic Burlesque show, Sugar Babies.  It was inevitable that the movie 42nd Street itself would be transformed into a Broadway stage musical in 1980. That same season there was the Marx Brothers inspired revusical A Day In Hollywood A Night In The Ukraine. 1983 brought a hit revival of Rodgers & Hart’s On Your Toes, and over the next decade there would be two Gershwin “revisals”, both of them so heavily reworked that they were given new titles: My One And Only in 1983, and Crazy For You in 1993. In between, came the Broadway debut of a 1937 London hit Me And My Girl in 1986. I would even include the 1980 blockbuster Annie in this category. Although it was, of course, an entirely new musical it certainly played on nostalgia for the comic strip and radio show Little Orphan Annie from the Depression Era, and smartly used that to echo the recession of the 1970’s. Some people would say that the Nostalgia Craze never ended, at least as far as Broadway is concerned.  Although, revivals of popular musicals have been part of the Broadway mix throughout most of its 120+ year history, the success of No, No, Nanette and its successors created a pattern and expectation that in every season – there should be at least enough revivals to fill out a Tony Award “Best Revival” category. And you could say that the immense popularity of City Center’s Encore Series is an extension of the Nostalgia Craze, as well. I for one hope that we will never tire of rediscovering and reinventing the great musicals of the past. Shanice Lorraine Wilson-Knox ; born May 14, 1973), better known simply as Shanice, is an American singer–songwriter, actress and dancer. Wilson had the Billboard hit singles "I Love Your Smile" and "Silent Prayer" in 1991 and "Saving Forever for You" in 1993. In 1999, Wilson scored another hit song, "When I Close My Eyes", which peaked at #12 on Billboard's Hot 100 chart. Wilson is recognized for her coloratura soprano voice and her ability to sing in the whistle register. Shanice was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and relocated to Los Angeles, California with her mother Crystal, and her aunt Penni. Her mother and aunt went Los Angeles in pursuit of careers in the music industry. They shifted their focus to Shanice and formed the management company Crystal Penni to cultivate and promote her talents. Shanice was nine years old when she appeared in a Kentucky Fried Chicken commercial with the legendary jazz vocalist Ella Fitzgerald. In 1984, she was part of the regular cast in the first thirteen of the children's program Kids Incorporated. Shanice competed on Star Search as eight-year old, and she signed with A&M Records at age eleven.[3][4] The given name "Shanice", an ad-hoc combination of the name elements Shan- and -ice, first enters the official statistics of most popular given names in the United States in 1988, i.e. in the year after the singer's debut album; its popularity peaked in 1992, at rank 162 of most popularly given girls' names, after Shanice's biggest hit I Love Your Smile and again fell below rank 1000 by the year 2000 In 1987, at the age of 14, A&M Records released her debut album, Discovery. It produced two top-ten R&B hits, "(Baby Tell Me) Can You Dance" and "No ½ Steppin'".[3][6] Wilson went on to sign a deal with Motown Records in the summer of 1990, releasing Inner Child in late 1991, which included her best-known hit single "I Love Your Smile". It reached the top ten in 22 countries, including the U.S. Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs and #2 on the Billboard Hot 100.[6] The album also featured a cover of Minnie Riperton's 1974 hit "Lovin' You", a rendition that brought attention to her five-octave vocal range.[7]After Inner Child, Wilson continued to record albums, including 1994's 21… Ways to Grow with producer Rhett Lawrence a Los Angeles session musician and Earth Wind & Fire guitarist Dick Smith. This effort was followed by a move to LaFace Records in 1997, who later released the 1999 album Shanice. While she has not achieved significant commercial success with subsequent albums, she has contributed to various film soundtracks, such as Boomerang ("Don't Wanna Love You") and The Meteor Man ("It's for You"). Wilson also achieved success with her top-ten hit "Saving Forever for You", from the Beverly Hills 90210 Soundtrack.[6] She also recorded "If I Never Knew You", a duet with Jon Secada, for the original soundtrack of Disney's 1995 film Pocahontas.Shanice occasionally does background vocals for other artists; she can be heard on Toni Braxton's "Come on Over Here" and "Un-Break My Heart",[8] as well as Usher's "Bedtime". In 2010 she performed vocals on the track "Behind the Mask", from Michael Jackson's posthumous album Michael. Wilson recorded the song "A Midnight Rendezvous" for the 2012 Kinect game Rhythm Party. She also performed the English theme song for the video game The Bouncer, called "Love Is the Gift". Wilson returned to recording after a five-year hiatus and released her fifth studio album Every Woman Dreams on her own label Imajah (named for her two children).[9] The album peaked at #30 on the R&B Albums Chart.[6]In 2019, Shanice returned with the new single "He Won't". In addition to singing, Wilson is also an actress, first appearing in season five of Family Matters episode "Rock Enroll".[11] She later performed in 1997 on the Broadway stage as the first black performer to star in the role of Eponine in the musical Les Misérables.[12] In 2001, Shanice made an appearance on her husband Flex's show One on One as a singer also she starred in the made-for-TV movie One Special Moment,[13] an adaptation of Brenda Jackson's 1998 novel of the same name. In 2011, Shanice joined Niecy Nash and Frenchie Davis for the 21st Annual "Divas Simply Singing" HIV/AIDS charity event.[14] Shanice and her husband, Flex, are starring in their own reality show Flex & Shanice, which premiered on November 1, 2014, on OWN. Get jammed by Discord & Rhyme! This week, we spotlight British punk rockers The Jam, specifically their 1979 post-punk opus Setting Sons. John, Rich, Dan, and host Ben unpack Paul Weller's dark subject matter and make the case that it can still result in fun — and even uplifting — music. It doesn't hurt that the band's spare, crackling energy makes even the dourest songs danceable, and that the 20-year-old Weller's worldview — cynical and biting, but somehow still hopeful — transcends the grimy streets of late-1970s England. Join four Yanks (plus one expat in an edifying guest appearance) as we discuss how Paul Weller's message resonates with us — even 40 years later, even Over Here, and even in our decidedly un-punky mid-thirties.   Everyone knows that one of your most important assets is your identity. Without that you will have difficulty getting anything accomplished. Most importantly, whoever holds the key to your identity will wield the ultimate power. Thankfully, today's digitized world and the emergence of block chains for public accounting and private security is bringing us to a place where you can store this information in a decentralized space allowing the individual to have the power. My guest, Dr. Leah Houston, is an emergency physician by training who ran into an unfortunate instance where her professional identity was used without her knowledge that put her at significant legal risk. Through that experience she began to wonder if there was a way for physicians to hold onto their identity. Her concept is HPEC which uses the block chain and provides a platform for physicians to control the validation of their credentials in a decentralized way that they can then monetize. Her plan is for physicians to own, operate, and utilize this credentialing service putting them in charge of their identity and communicating in an open and decentralized forum to disseminate ideas and innovations free from outside corporate interests. It's a bold and ambitious plan and we will discuss it in detail during this show.   In the interest of full disclosure, this is a new venture and investment opportunity for physicians. We will not discuss the financial details of how to become a founding member but all inquiries can be sent through the HPEC website. As of this writing, I am not a founding member and do not mean for the show to be my endorsement or recommendation. I simply hope you find the idea of empowering physicians and block chain technology entering the medical field as interesting as I do. Dr. Leah Houston, ER trained physician and founder of HPEC, a digitized physician credentialing service. show notes HPEC: This is the main landing page for Dr. Houston's venture. HPEC is looking to transform the credentialing world for physicians by allowing them to own and control their personal credentials. Houston Health: Dr. Houston's medical practice landing page. Stop Organ Harvesting: Another organization seeking to expose and tell more people about what is happening in China. Some great links about the Falun Gong who were targeted for persecution. Episode 015: Physician Burnout - Why & How to Save the Docs with Dr. Mari Sanchez Wohlever. It's easy to forget that physicians are people. Certainly when we discuss doctors in our national political debates we forget that there is a critical relationship ignored - the patient-physician relationship. As that relationship is strained with the introduction of electronic medical records, production pressures, administrator rules changes, and malpractice physician burnout is almost inevitable. In this discussion, Eric and Mari look at the causes of physician burnout and strategies for treating it. A first strategy that Dr. Sanchez uses while she is coaching doctors to treat their burnout is the creation of a list of what bothers the doctor the most. Then, the first step is to fix one of those small problems to get a feeling of empowerment. Once that first step is solved (like hiring a scribe for data entry or improving templates) then the doctors will regain a feeling of control and be able to better focus on why they practice - the patients. The conversation is chock full of anecdotes, strategies, and advice on how to approach burnout as a physician or someone who knows and cares for one challenged by burnout. The show notes page is long because of all the references to past episodes I've done and all the great information and books Dr. Sanchez provides for us. [caption id="attachment_1800" align="aligncenter" width="300"] Dr. Amarylis Sanchez Wohlever is a family practice physician, the author of 3 books, blogs extensively, and serves as a career/life coach for doctors to help them deal with burnout.[/caption]   show notes FaithfulMD.com: The main website with all things Dr. Sanchez. Episode 006: "Doc, I'm Over Here, That's Just a Computer Screen." Why Don't Electronic Health Records Help with Dr. Ken Fisher Electronic health records (EHRs) were supposed to revolutionize the way we practice medicine. They were going to improve efficiency, reduce errors, and radically change we take care of patients. EHRs have managed just one of those goals - radically change the way we take care of patients - but not in a good way. As people taking care of patients we spend more time clicking, typing, and searching for critical information than we do in laying on of hands and talking to those who are ill. How did this happen? Computers and electronic record systems have made many aspects of our economy so much better. We can order food online, carry maps in our pockets to never get lost (unless you're a new teenage driver), and efficiently order products to minimize waste. But few of these benefits present themselves in hospitals despite billion dollar efforts to computerize everything. Dr. Ken Fisher joins me as we try to get to the bottom of why we have these clunky EHR systems and why they don't work as advertised. How did they come to pass and why is the market for EHRs dominated by so few products. As the author of a popular book titled Understanding Health Care: A Historical Perspective, we also get sidetracked to discuss ways to improve upon the delivery of health care in general. Specifically, we discuss HSAs and Medicaid spending. Dr. Fisher is a nephrologist in Kalamazoo, MI who has run multiple residency and fellowship programs and has been published both in scientific journals and the lay press. BEHIND THE CURTAIN: BROADWAY'S LIVING LEGENDS » Podcast

The musical theatre of the 1970s offered audiences the most diverse style of musical entertainment. There were traditional golden age shows, concept shows, revivals, nostalgia crazes, social commentary shows, and Pat Birch was involved in every genre. While audiences best know her as the choreographer of both the stage and movie versions of Grease and the director and choreographer of Grease 2, plus her resident choreography gig on the first six years of Saturday Night Live, her work on Broadway includes A Little Night Music, Over Here, Truckload, Pacific Overtures, They're Playing Our Song, and countless others. Pat pulls back the curtain on her career to discuss how she got Steve Martin to dance, what was it like to hand jive , and why Grease 2 might just be better than Grease. Also, Pat shines the spotlight on John Travolta, Robert Altman and Gilda Radner Become a sponsor of Behind The Curtain and get early access to interviews, private playlists, and advance knowledge of future guests so you can ask the legends your own questions. Without any forethought or preparation, Christopher Knight walked into the Maine woods in 1986 and lived there in complete solitude for the next 27 years, subsisting on what he was able to steal from local cabins. In this week's episode of the Futility Closet podcast we'll tell the story of the North Pond hermit, one man's attempt to divorce himself completely from civilization. We'll also look for coded messages in crosswords and puzzle over an ineffective snake. Intro: Disneyland's Matterhorn contains a basketball goal. On this week’s Past Present podcast, Nicole Hemmer, Natalia Mehlman Petrzela, and Neil Young discuss Pope Francis’ visit to the US, the “quit lit” phenomenon, and Donald Trump. Here are some links and references mentioned during this week’s show: The papal visit of Pope Francis marks the tenth time a pope has come to the United States. In his new book, We Gather Together, Neil writes about how Pope John Paul II’s papal visits in the 1980s strengthened the American pro-life movement and deepened evangelical-Catholic relations. The rise of “quit lit” from professors announcing their departure from academia in written form found its most recent example in an essay for the website Vox. But the fantasy of quitting one’s job has been a frequent theme in American pop culture, from Johnny Paycheck’s country hit, “Take This Job and Shove It,” to the twentieth-century novels Babbitt and Revolutionary Road. Donald Trump’s presidential campaign continues to intrigue and puzzle political commentators. Historians have looked for historical precedents for Trump, but it may be that Trump, particularly in terms of his views on immigration and his outrageous comments about Mexicans, is best understood in the historical currents of American populism and nativism. Niki has written frequently on the Trump phenomenon in her column for U.S. News.In our regular closing feature, What’s Making History: Natalia discussed the recent finding that more people in 2015 have died from “selfie-related deaths” than from shark attacks. Such news reminded Natalia of Christopher Lasch’s critique of American society in his 1979 classic, The Culture of Narcissism.Neil recommended Johnny Depp’s new movie, Black Mass, which depicts the career of James “Whitey” Bulger, the mafia kingpin and FBI informant who terrorized South Boston in the 1970s and early 1980s. ·Niki spoke about Erik Kirschbaum’s recent editorial, “Whatever Happened to German America?” Niki, our resident German American, waxed nostalgic about her love for kuchen, springerle, and the Schnitzelbank drinking song. While understanding the history of discrimination against German Americans, which David Kennedy outlined in his book Over Here, Niki suggested there are much stronger historical reasons why we won’t see an organized drive to reclaim German-American identity any time soon.

Separately, Sherman and Stiles also provide quick overviews of their respective careers, with Sherman recalling how he and his brother Robert became the house composers for Disney and later wrote the stage musicals "Over Here" and "Busker Alley", and Stiles reviewing his partnership with Anthony Drewe and how they spent seven years writing "Just So", only to win the Olivier Award for their more swiftly created "Honk!" Original air date – April 27, 2007.
