Show Notes Booker T. Washington once said: “An inch of progress is worth more than a yard of complaint.”  A once enslaved man who became an author and speaker in the post-Reconstruction Jim Crow-era South, Washington famously advocated against protest and agitation tactics meant to advance civil rights. Washington's position was that Black Americans should concentrate on economic progress, rather than desegregation efforts.   Washington believed that economic success would advance Black people in American society and protect them from the violence of the Jim Crow era.  However, this wasn't always—or even often—the case.  In a paper titled, “An Inch of Progress: Black Business and Black Accountants Fighting Jim Crow Violence,” researchers from the University of Denver have set out to set the record straight on how economics and accounting actually hurt or benefited Black Americans at the time. In this episode, Emma speaks with Daniels College of Business professor Tony Holder and history professor Kimberly Jones from the College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences, plus grad student Mayowa Alabi, about their research into the history of racism and accounting. Anthony D. Holder, PhD, CPA (Inactive), is an associate professor at the University of Denver. He has previously taught at Case Western Reserve University, the University of Toledo and the University of Cincinnati. He also spent a semester teaching in Shanghai, China. He earned his BA in Accountancy at Park University, a Master of Accountancy at Wright State University and a PhD in Accountancy at the University of Cincinnati. He is a Certified Public Accountant (CPA). Prior to obtaining his PhD, he worked for PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP in their auditing and tax departments. Kimberly Jones is an associate professor of history in the College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences. Jones studies the experiences of enslaved and free black people across the Atlantic World. Her primary research is centered on the construction of racial identity through medicine and science. Mayowa Alabi is a graduate student in the Daniels College of Business.

We take immense pride in being the largest independent retail business in East Anglia, with a remarkable presence spanning more than 200 trading outlets across 70 diverse towns and villages in Norfolk, Suffolk, and Essex. Prior to joining ABC, Davis was the Chief Financial Officer of Paycor, Inc., a payroll and human capital management solution (HCM) provider. Previously, he was CFO of Blackboard, Inc., a Washington D.C. based education technology company and the global leader in enterprise technology and innovative solutions for millions of students and learners around the world. Earlier, Davis was the Chief Financial Officer at Allscripts Healthcare Solutions, a Chicago-based publicly traded healthcare IT company. Allscripts focused on providing solutions that advanced clinical, financial, and operational results throughout healthcare delivery systems. Prior to joining Allscripts, Davis was Controller and then CFO of Lante Corporation, a Chicago- based technology consulting firm, where he helped lead the company's IPO in February 2000 and subsequent sale in September 2002. From 1991 through 1999, Davis was a public accountant with PriceWaterhouseCoopers LLP. She began in internal audit at Chicago's Continental Illinois National Bank and Trust. She later worked with KPMG/BearingPoint in the early 1990s. She also worked at JP Morgan where she focused on Y2K risk. Post Sarbanes Oxley she worked at PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP until 2006. She then pivoted as an investigative reporter and feature writer. LEXINGTON, Ky. (June 14, 2022) – The University of Kentucky Alumni Association started the Great Teacher Award program in 1961 to honor excellent teaching at the university. There have been over 300 teachers honored since that first year. Nominations may only be submitted by current students. To receive the award, a candidate must: Hold the rank of full-time lecturer or above and have been a member of the faculty for the past three years at UK. Have superior knowledge of the subject matter. Have original and innovative classroom presentations. Demonstrate concern for students, both inside and outside the classroom setting. Not have been a recipient of the award for the past 10 years. A committee of the UK Alumni Association Board of Directors and a representative from the student organization Omicron Delta Kappa select the recipients based on objective rating and ranking of the eligible nominations submitted. This episode of Behind the Blue spotlights one of the 2022 Great Teacher Award winners. Olivia Davis, from the Gatton College of Business and Economics, joined the faculty at the University of Kentucky in January 2018. She was in public accounting with PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP in the assurance practice before joining UK. As a CPA with nearly 14 years of experience, Davis brings a wealth of practical experience to her classroom. She invites her students to go beyond just the technical accounting and auditing concepts by sharing real-world, current scenarios with them. Davis serves as the faculty advisor for the UK Student Chapter of the National Association of Black Accountants and she is a professional member of NABA. She earned her bachelor's and master's in accounting from UK. Davis was awarded the Gatton College Teaching Excellence Award in 2020, the 2021 Gatton College Faculty of the Year (student selected) and the 2021 University of Kentucky Provost's Award for Outstanding Teaching. Campbell's stories from a more than 40-year-long career in accounting were so fascinating, we invited him on this week's show. Campbell, now retired, started out at what is now PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP, then spent decades at the Treasury Department. The IRS faces a long list of tasks if it plans to complete all of the items on its priority guidance plan to implement the new tax law. The Internal Revenue Service has highlighted several projects, including the pass-through deduction under tax code Section 199A and new international base erosion measures, to address by June 30, the end of the agency's business year. Pam Olson, the U.S. deputy tax leader and Washington National Tax Services practice leader at PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP, joined Talking Tax host Allyson Versprille on April 20 to discuss the status of regulations for the 2017 tax act (Pub. L. No. 115-97) and what taxpayers and practitioners should expect this summer. Before joining PwC, Olson was assistant secretary for tax policy at the Treasury Department. It may be difficult for the government to meet that end-of-June target if history is any indication, according to Olson. The IRS and Treasury have made good progress so far with guidance on the repatriation tax on foreign earnings and profits and the new limitation on the deductibility of business interest expense, she said.

Additionally, for tax years beginning after December 31, 2017, §55(a) was amended, repealing the corporate alternative minimum tax. This led to questions regarding the applicable tax rates for a corporation whose tax year began before January 1, 2018 but after December 31, 2017. George Manousos and Jason Black of PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP’s Federal Tax Services out of Washington-National Tax Services joins talking tax’s host Joe Hagedorn to discuss the application of Internal Revenue Code’s §15 and how it applies to determine the applicable tax rate and alternative minimum tax rate for a fiscal year corporation. Are college job fairs and recruiting doomed as discriminatory activities? In February, a District Court in California ruled that job applicants could maintain a disparate impact claim under the Age Discrimination in Employment Act (ADEA) challenging the practice of recruiting entry-level workers mostly through a program available only to recent college graduates. But last October, the Eleventh Circuit affirmed en banc the dismissal of a case brought by an over-40 job seeker who alleged that the company engaged in age discrimination by using screening guidelines describing the “targeted candidate” as someone “2-3 years out of college” who “adjusts easily to changes,” and suggesting to avoid “applicants in sales for 8-10 years.” The two cases are Rabin v. PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP, --- F.Supp.3d ----, 2017 WL 661354 (N.D.Cal., 2017) and Villarreal v. R.J. Jacqui began her career at PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP in the Dispute Analysis & Investigations group, which focused on the accounting aspects in litigation and fraud investigation. She recently moved into investment banking and joined Sevara Partners LLC, a start-up boutique investment bank focused in mergers & acquisitions, restructuring advisory and capital raising. Jacqui is excited to be working with TAP to build a community of “expatriate” Taiwan-folk to pay homage to their Taiwanese roots and meet other foodies who appreciate delicacies like stinky tofu and chicken gizzard. Crystal Tang was born in New Jersey and lived there until moving abroad to Hong Kong in 8th grade. While she was abroad she had the opportunity to visit family in Taiwan multiple times a year and has come to think of it as home. After finishing high school, Crystal moved to New York where she attended Barnard College, studying Art History and Visual Arts. During undergrad, she was involved with the Taiwanese American Students Association and also participated in the Formosa Foundation’s Ambassador Program. Crystal currently works as a Regional Director at Teach For America where she oversees recruitment and outreach efforts in New York.

The growing trend toward integrated care delivery systems can help the U.S. healthcare system refocus on its primary goals --- providing coordinated care and returning patients to their optimal health status, explains Perry Hanson, partner with Wipfli, a national accounting and business consulting firm that provides consulting, tax and audit advice for the healthcare industry. Integrated care delivery can also help the U.S. reverse its current last-place rankings in quality, access and efficiency among the global health community, he adds. Citing the success of the medical home model of care in Minnesota, Hanson calls the patient-centered model a "beacon of hope" for a beleaguered healthcare industry. Hanson and Dr. David Chin, a national partner in the Health Industries Advisory Practice of PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP and the managing partner of PwC's Global Healthcare Research Institute, will examine the trends that will continue to impact the healthcare industry in 2009 and how organizations can best prepare themselves for the changes that will come with the new administration during Healthcare Trends and Forecasts in 2009.
