Ever felt like you just need some "me time? What do you usually do?    Here's a question - has "me time" gone too far?   The Self-Care Hype: A Personal Take Timmerie recounts a conversation with a longtime friend who worked in pregnancy resource centers. This friend shared stories of a mom juggling full-time parenting, PTA duties, and church volunteering, all while desperately seeking "me time." On the flip side, another friend, a mother of four, laughed at the idea of "me time," reminiscing about simply taking a deep breath amidst the chaos.   Jim's Perspective: From Common Sense to Crazy Jim O'Day joins the conversation with a candid take on how self-care has morphed into a narcissistic craze. He shares a frustrating story of an older woman caught up in the self-care movement, spending money she didn't have on extravagant retreats. Jim emphasizes that true self-care should be about maintaining balance through simple, everyday actions—like a peaceful walk or a good night's sleep—not expensive getaways.   The Personal Toll of Extreme Self-Care There can be dangers of over-prioritizing self-care. This obsession can lead to family breakdowns, with some women going from being supermoms to walking away from their families. Jim calls for a return to the kind of common-sense care our grandmothers knew: small acts that nourish without isolating.   Healthy Marriages Need Healthy Individuals Jim shares his experience working with couples. He stresses the importance of both partners getting healthy individually for their relationship to thrive. He advises against trying to fix each other, suggesting instead to focus on self-improvement and personal growth. His personal phrase? "You fix you, he fixes him."   The Value of Trusted Friends Both Timmerie and Jim stress the importance of having a support system. Jim shares how he turns to trusted friends when he's struggling, making sure to focus on his own feelings rather than criticizing his spouse. This approach fosters healthier processing of marital challenges and keeps the focus on personal growth.   Balancing Self-Care with Common Sense Balance and moderation are key. Timmerie and Jim encourage you to find joy in simple pleasures and maintain healthy routines without giving in to the pressures of social media's extravagant standards.

Did you know that women still hold less than 30% of all elected offices across the federal, state, and local level, and the numbers are even lower when looking at women from underrepresented communities? Black women comprise less than 6% of officeholders in Congress, statewide elective executive offices, and state legislatures; only 7.9% of all women state legislators identify as Latina; and, roughly 0.23 percent of U.S elected officials identify as LGBTQIA+. Women are still less likely than men to have thought about running for office or to express interest in running for office in the future. Women are less likely to have opted into leadership roles from a young age. In fact, few of us– less than 2%– grow up with the dream to run for office one day. A Note from James:James Bandolino committed serious financial fraud - started a hedge fund which was a Ponzi scheme - went to jail for nine years, and we really dive into the details of his fraud, the psychology of it. What's critical is that not all frauds have the same flavor - all frauds are bad,  don't get me wrong. It is morally bad to be fraudulent. There's a reason why he went to jail. He wanted to go to jail. He tried to kill himself. It's amazing the story of how he failed to do that. But, before I give too much away we're going to discuss in detail the fraud and then tomorrow I'm going to release the story of him going to jail, what happened there, and how he came out the other side. So,  without further ado, let's dive into the details of the fraud that James Brandolino committed. Episode Description:This episode delves into the life of James Brandolino, a former hedge fund manager who crafted a Ponzi scheme leading to significant financial fraud. Brandolino pleaded guilty to mail fraud in August 2011 and was sentenced to 107 months in prison and ordered to pay $3,865,484 in restitution. It begins with an introduction to Brandolino's fraudulent activities, leading to his nine-year imprisonment. Altucher and Brandolino explore the psychology behind the fraud, emphasizing the gradual and unintentional entry into illegal activities. James Brandolino shares a detailed backstory of his trading career, starting with inspiration from the movie Trading Places and his progression in the financial sector, working at MF Global and creating a futures trading company. Initially, honest intentions led him to a Ponzi scheme when attempts to cover a minor initial loss spiraled out of control. The discussion includes technical aspects of his trading strategies and the choice to commit fraud to escape from admitting failure. In a dramatic turn, James attempts suicide but survives, leading to his voluntary surrender to authorities and incarceration. Episode Summary:00:00 The Intriguing Case of James Brandolino's Financial Fraud01:48 Diving Deep into the Psychology of Fraud02:26 The Early Trading Days and the Birth of a Scheme08:28 The Slippery Slope: From Legitimate Trading to Financial Fraud16:40 The Descent: Amplifying the Fraud and Facing the Consequences20:35 The Personal Toll of Financial Fraud21:18 The Isolation and Stress of Financial Deception24:00 Turning to Criminal Actions for Survival25:25 The High-Risk Attempts to Recover Losses28:05 The Psychological Battle and Trading Strategies36:12 Facing the Consequences and the Brink of Despair40:09 A Failed Suicide Attempt Leads to Redemption ------------What do YOU think of the show? For 25 years, Semple focused on high-risk law enforcement, dealing with drug, gang and homicide investigations and investigating some of Australia's most notorious criminals.  It came with a cost- as Semple suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder and depression after retiring from the force. He detailed a raw account of his experience in his memoir 'The Cop Who Fell to Earth'. "I got to learn my job by training, being thrown in the deep end of the pool and learning to swim that way. I learned a lot about self-reliance. If that homicide happened in the city, the homicide squad would have picked it up- out there, I was it." America's air campaign against terrorism in the Middle East was one of the most precise in history, according to military officials and media reports at the time. But award-winning investigative journalist Azmat Khan did not believe what she read in the papers. So, she decided to find the truth for herself. She put her body on the line and crisscrossed war zones to figure out how America's wars in Iraq and Afghanistan were actually going. We discuss tricks of the trade: how Azmat shook off Iraqi officials who were on her tail, how she distinguished between ISIS fighters and civilians, and how she built relationships with her sources. We meet the most important source in her life, Basim Razzo, an Iraqi man who lost his family in a U.S. drone strike. He was labeled, incorrectly, as a member of ISIS. We also go to a place Azmat does not like to visit (at least not in public): her inner life. Living between war and peace takes a real emotional toll.

Sonoma County has seen a 100-year flood, a historic drought and six major wildfires that have left death and destruction in their wake, and subjected residents to months of bad air days and routine power shut-offs -- just in the last four years. What does living with chronic catastrophes like these do to people? How does it affect their minds, bodies and spirits? The four-part podcast, “Chronic Catastrophe,” led by journalism students at Santa Rosa Junior College, takes up that question, interviewing experts and local residents about the real impacts of climate change on people's lives. We'll talk with the podcast's producers about the series and their own personal experiences coping through “chronic catastrophe.”
