What does it really mean to be crisis-ready? In this conversation from InfoSecurity Europe 2025, Steve Wright—a data privacy and cybersecurity leader with three decades of experience spanning Siemens, Unilever, John Lewis, and the Bank of England—joins Sean Martin and Marco Ciappelli to unpack the heart of effective crisis management. With a career that's evolved from risk, through cybersecurity, and now into privacy, Wright offers a refreshingly grounded perspective: crisis management starts with staying calm—but only if you've done the work beforehand.Preparation Over PanicCrisis management isn't just a technical checklist—it's a cultural discipline. Wright emphasizes that calm only comes from consistent practice. From live simulations to cross-functional coordination, he warns that too many organizations are underprepared, relying on ad hoc responses when a breach or outage occurs. Drawing on a real-life ransomware scenario from his time at John Lewis, Wright illustrates the importance of verification, collaboration with law enforcement, and informed decision-making over knee-jerk reactions.Containment, Communication, and CulturePreparation leads naturally to containment—an organization's ability to limit the damage. Whether it's pulling cables or isolating systems, quick thinking can prevent weeks of downtime. But just as important is how you communicate. Wright points to the contrast between companies that respond with transparency and empathy versus those that go silent, risking public trust. Modern crisis management requires the ability to shift the narrative and speak directly to affected stakeholders—before speculation takes over.Trust and Accountability in a Global EcosystemDigital trust has become a board-level concern, not just a technical one. Wright notes that conversations with executives have moved beyond compliance to include broader questions of data ownership, consumer expectations, and supply chain accountability. As global systems grow more complex, clarity about who owns what—and who's responsible when things go wrong—becomes harder to establish, but more important than ever.Looking AheadWright ends with a look to the future, imagining a world where individuals control their data through biometric locks and personal data brokers. Whether this utopia (or dystopia) arrives remains to be seen—but the path forward demands organizations prioritize practice, transparency, and trust today.___________Guest: Steve Wright, Data Protection Officer, Financial Services Compensation Scheme | https://www.linkedin.com/in/stevewright1970/Hosts:Sean Martin, Co-Founder at ITSPmagazine | Website: https://www.seanmartin.comMarco Ciappelli, Co-Founder at ITSPmagazine | Website: https://www.marcociappelli.com___________Episode SponsorsThreatLocker: https://itspm.ag/threatlocker-r974___________ResourcesLearn more and catch more stories from Infosecurity Europe 2025 London coverage: https://www.itspmagazine.com/infosec25Catch all of our event coverage: https://www.itspmagazine.com/technology-and-cybersecurity-conference-coverageWant to tell your Brand Story Briefing as part of our event coverage? The Navy is moving to rename the USNS Harvey Milk and reconsider other ships honoring civil rights legends such as Harriet Tubman and John Lewis. The shift, tied to a Trump-era push to “restore warrior culture,” has drawn criticism from advocates who view it as a move to erase vital history. Before Kind of Blue, a 21-year-old Miles Davis was already reshaping jazz with Birth of the Cool. In this episode, we explore how Miles teamed up with arranger Gil Evans and a chamber-like nonet to craft a sound full of singable melodies, tightly arranged horns, and forward-thinking restraint. With French horn in the mix, Gerry Mulligan and John Lewis' arranging touch, and Lee Konitz's lyrical solos, we unpack why this album – recorded in 1949-1950 and released years later – still lives up to its name.ABOUT OPEN STUDIO------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------As the premier online jazz education platform, with an ever-expanding course library and 20,000+ members, Open Studio (OS) has everything you need to excel and thrive on your jazz journey.Featuring everything from beginner to advanced lessons, engaging courses from A-list instructors, step-by-step curriculum, real-time classes and a thriving and incredibly supportive community, OS is the perfect platform to level up your jazz playing, whether you're a total beginner, or an advanced pro-level improvisor.
Langston Hughes, the great African American poet, said decades ago, “Fascism is a new name for that kind of terror the Negro has always faced in America.” Fascism can and has led to genocide. Progressive African American intellectuals, writers, poets, and musicians have had a long tradition and history of solidarity and resisting fascism and genocide, from Frederick Douglass to Gil Scott-Heron, from Sojourner Truth to Angela Davis, from W.E.B. Du Bois to John Lewis, from Paul Robeson to Amiri Baraka, from Ida B. Wells to Malcolm X, from Ella Baker to Dr. King, from Harry Belafonte to Sonny Rollins, from James Baldwin to Cornel West and up to the present moment where Robin D. G. Kelley warns “We're witnessing the consolidation of a fascist police state.” Recorded at the University of Massachusetts.
“Get Into Wise Trouble” is a Dharma talk and guided meditation on courageous, compassionate action. Inspired by a moment in Babel by R.F. Kuang, and grounded in the words of the late Congressman John Lewis—this talk explores the Buddhist path of standing up, speaking out, and disturbing harm with love. We talk about what wise trouble really looks like, how the Buddha and Thich Nhat Hanh modeled it, and how we can act from clarity instead of fear—even when the stakes feel high. This one's for anyone who's ever wondered if Buddhists are supposed to stay silent in the face of injustice. (Spoiler: we're not.) I'd love to hear your thoughts on what wise trouble means to you. https://bio.reverendgeorgebeecher.com

It is my privilege to meander today with my friend Cheryl Marita, and we explore her book “Touching the Veil: End of Life Stories Through the Eyes of a Nurse.”This podcast looks at joy in the everyday, and Cheryl's work as a hospice nurse does that for her… it brings joy to her everyday, that's clear. After a career spanning almost 60 years, and at 79 years of age, she continues to work as a hospice nurse two days a week because not doing so, well, it's just not possible for her. In her book, she talks about the beginnings of her career, in the early 1960s, and her entry into supporting people to their natural death at a time when death meant "failure" to the medical professionals. Since she started her career, we've come a long way in human-focused care. Cheryl's book shares some of those stories. Welcome to Five Things Friday—your new weekly dose of insights, hosted by Laura & Alex from The Retail Podcast! In this debut episode, we explore:-
This week on CounterSpin: The website of the Kairos Democracy Project has a quote from John Lewis, reminding us, “Democracy is not a state. It is an act.” Our guest Tanya Clay House is board chair at Kairos and a longtime advocate for the multiracial democracy that the Trump White House seeks to denounce and derail — in part by erasing the history of Black people in this country. As part of that, she's part of an ongoing project called Freedom to Learn and its present campaign, called #HandsOffOurHistory. Corporate news media evince lofty principles about the First Amendment, but when people actually use it, the response is more telling. When USA Today covered activism in Seattle around the WTO, it reported that, “Little noticed by the public, the upcoming World Trade Organization summit has energized protesters around the world.” You see how that works: If you're the little-noticing “public,” you're cool; but if you band together with other people and speak out, well, now you're a “protester,” and that's different — and marginal. Whatever they say in their Martin Luther King Day editorials, elite media's day-to-day message is, “Normal people don't protest.” In 2025, there's an ominous addendum: “Or else.” We hear from Danaka Katovich, co-director of the feminist grassroots anti-war organization CODEPINK, currently, but not for the first time, at the sharp end of state efforts to silence activists and activism. The post Tanya Clay House on Freedom to Learn / Danaka Katovich on Attacks on Activists appeared first on KPFA.

Description: Jeff Chu, an award-winning journalist, author, and "sort-of-kind-of farmer," joins Jen on the For the Love podcast to discuss his book, Good Soil: The Education of an Accidental Farmhand. In the book, Jeff shares stories from his time at “The Farminary”, a twenty-one-acre working farm at Princeton's Theological Seminary, where students explore life's biggest questions while cultivating the earth. Jeff reflects on his own struggles with faith, identity, and the expectations placed upon him as a gay man raised in a conservative Christian environment. His journey reveals the challenges of cultivating, not just plants, but also a spiritual life that is authentic, evolving, and inclusive. In this conversation, Jeff, Jen and Amy discuss: What Jeff learned at the “Farminary” about creating “good soil,” drawing lessons from the rhythms of growth, decay, and regeneration that define life on the land Finding moments of grace and healing. Challenging traditional interpretations of the biblical Parable of the Sower Exploring faith, not as something static, but as something that evolves. Thought-provoking Quotes: “God's love is that lavish and it's there for you. And it doesn't come with the conditions that you might have. It doesn't require you to do anything more than you've already done. It just requires you to be. God's love is big enough to hold that, and your mess, and your beauty, and your frailty, and anything else you might bring to God.” – Jeff Chu “I see folks trying to figure out how to create belonging, not just for themselves, but also for others, and being willing to ask those tough questions out loud, and being brave enough to say, I don't know, but I wonder. Being bold enough to point out not just the ugly things, but also to name the beautiful and hopeful things. Those are all things that give me hope.” – Jeff Chu #JeffChu #GoodSoil #ForTheLovePodcast #SpiritualJourney Resources Mentioned in This Episode: Community First Village / Mobile Loaves and Fishes - https://mlf.org/community-first/ Genesis Gardens - https://mlf.org/genesis-gardens/ 7: An Experimental Mutiny Against Excess by Jen Hatmaker - https://amzn.to/4kZZmjN Actually Believing God Loves You Changes Everything: Jeff Chu - https://jenhatmaker.com/podcasts/series-16/actually-believing-god-loves-you-changes-everything-jeff-chu/ Good Soil: The Education of an Accidental Farmhand by Jeff Chu - https://amzn.to/4kXozLJ Wholehearted Faith by Rachel Held Evans and Jeff Chu - https://amzn.to/4iZlOrA Does Jesus Really Love Me?: A Gay Christian's Pilgrimage in Search of God in America by Jeff Chu - https://amzn.to/4bZH91N March: Book One by John Lewis - https://amzn.to/4c6xmXI Travel and Leisure magazine editor-at-large - https://www.travelandleisure.com/author/jeff-chu Small Things Like These by Claire Keegan - https://amzn.to/446LUo5 Padraig O'Tuama, poet - https://www.padraigotuama.com/ Kitchen Hymns by Padraig O'Tuama - https://amzn.to/4ccPFdV Maggie Smith, poet - https://maggiesmithpoet.com/ In The Shelter: Finding a Home in the World by Padraig O'Tuama - https://amzn.to/4ccNNBL Jeff Chu's Good Soil Book Tour - https://byjeffchu.com/tour Guest's Links: Website - https://byjeffchu.com/ Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/byjeffchu Twitter - https://x.com/jeffchu Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/byjeffchu Substack - https://byjeffchu.com/contact#substack Connect with Jen! From "Bloody Sunday" to Modern Activism: Civil Rights Leaders Reflect on LegacyThis show is made possible thanks our members! To become a sustaining member go to https://LauraFlanders.org/donate Thank you for your continued support!Description: 60 years ago in Selma, Alabama, state troopers beat peaceful protesters bloody on the Edmund Pettus Bridge as they marched for civil rights. The horror of “Bloody Sunday” and the resilience of the Civil Rights Movement ultimately led to the passage of the 1965 Voting Rights Act and many of the landmark achievements that are now directly under attack. As civil rights activists look to history to understand — and prepare for — the present, Laura walks the Bridge and talks with, among others, Sheyann Webb Christburg, who marched at the age of eight, Black Voters Matter co-founders LaTosha Brown and Clifford Albright; law professor and author Kimberlé Williams Crenshaw and Maya Wiley, President and CEO of the Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights. What does people power look like today? Plus, a commentary from Laura on name calling then and now.“We're not going to phone bank our way out of this. We're not going to text our way out of this. And in truth, we're not even going to vote our way out of this . . . It's going to take revisiting some of the same strategies that we saw here in Selma, in terms of nonviolent civil disobedience and direct action.” - Clifford Albright“When we see and hear and think about fascism, we think about anti-democratic movements in Europe. We think about the Holocaust . . . But for Black people, as Langston Hughes said, you don't have to explain to us what fascism is. We experienced it. That is what we were fighting, for the 60, 70 years after Reconstruction was overthrown.” - Kimberlé CrenshawGuests:• Clifford Albright: Co-Founder & Executive Director, Black Voters Matter• Willard and Kiba Armstead: Veteran & Spouse• Trayvon Bossa: Sigma Chapter Member, Miles College Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity• LaTosha Brown: Co-Founder, Black Voters Matter• Kimberlé Williams Crenshaw: Co-Founder & Executive Director, African American Policy Forum; Host of the Intersectionality Matters! Jamia Wilson discusses her book, "Make Good Trouble", a powerful and inspiring book aimed at young readers to encourage them to stand up for justice, equality, and human rights, drawing on the legacy of civil rights leaders like John Lewis.
According to CNN, Sen. Cory Booker has broken the record for the longest floor speech in Senate history, surpassing the 24-hour, 18-minute mark set by Strom Thurmond in 1957. Thurmond's speech famously opposed the Civil Rights Act, while Booker's protest targets policies under President Donald Trump. Beginning at 7 p.m. Monday, Booker vowed to speak as long as physically possible, voicing concern over Medicaid cuts, attacks on democratic norms, and billionaire influence in government. Throughout the night, fellow Democrats, including Chuck Schumer and Chris Murphy, supported him. Though not a filibuster, Booker's speech delayed Senate proceedings and served as a symbolic stand, calling the current political moment a “crisis” and invoking John Lewis for moral inspiration. There's something happening here. Can you feel it?Joan Walsh and her fellow contributor at The Nation, Micah Sifray, both wrote this week about the resistance. Or as they both prefer, the defiance. But whatever you call it, it's here. And if you're not participating in it, then you're helping to take down our nation and our future. Today, Joan Walsh will join us to talk about it, for what it's worth.Senator Cory Booker has been speaking, holding the senate floor since 7pm ET last night. I'm writing this shortly before 4pm ET. I go on the air at 5. He's not delaying a vote, so it's not technically a filibuster. But he said he needed to do something different. "John Lewis and so many heroes before us would say that this is the time to stand up, to speak up,” Booker said near the start of his remarks. “This is the time to get in some good trouble, to get into necessary trouble. I can't allow this body to continue without doing something different, speaking out.”As I've not been able to listen for the now 19 hours he's been speaking, I can't tell you that I'll share the highlights. But we'll share some of them. And perhaps we'll hear him wrap it up.
In this very special episode we interview not one but two marketing leaders from the John Lewis Partnership, tackling a unique shiny new object, too. New Jersey Sen. Cory Booker is going full marathon mode, clocking over 13 hours and continuing on the Senate floor, torching the Trump-Musk administration's agenda. Booker took to the mic at 7:00 p.m. Monday and hasn't let up. The 55-year-old Democrat is dragging receipts and fury, ripping into spending cuts by Republicans, their attacks on immigration, book bans, and what he calls a complete disregard for the Constitution. “This administration has not only overseen in 71 days, a rise in inflation, a rise in the cost of groceries, a lowering of people's 401Ks, with the stock market going down. They are already hurting people on their basic delivery of their services.” This is a political marathon rooted in the legacy of John Lewis' “Good Trouble.” Senate rules say if no time limits are set, a senator can speak indefinitely as long as they can stay standing and keep talking. We'll use these sessions to hone our use of terms as tools to reveal truth, neutralize Racists/White people. #ANTIBLACKNESS This weekend marks 60 years since the infamous "Bloody Sunday" march in Selma, Alabama where dozens of black females, elderly and children were beaten, trampled by horses, and shackled. , During the melee, the late John Lewis was pummeled on Edmund Pettus Bridge, which was deliberately named after a Klu Klux Klan member. Importantly, after much public debate and White hand-ringing, the bridge remains named after a Klansman in 2025. Organizers of this weekend's anniversary march openly question how much progress has been made since that day of White Terrorism. In Germany, a half dozen White men were arrested and charged with plotting to overthrow the German government and kidnap the health minister. The spirit of Dr. Frances Cress Welsing is demanding that alleged counter-racists pay attention to what's happening in this part of so-called Europe

Chicago Tribune, Slate, NY TimesOn "Bloody Sunday," March 7, 1965, C.T. Vivian, a prominent figure in the Civil Rights Movement, was violently attacked by Sheriff Jim Clark while attempting to escort a group of African Americans to register to vote in Selma, Alabama. Steve Fiffer is a New York Times Bestselling Author. His Book is "It's in The Action": Memories of a Nonviolent Warrior, Rev C.T. Vivian's Memoir.Reverend Vivian was a Major Force in the Fight for Civil Rights & Voters Rights in the Twentieth Century till he Passed July 17th, 2020.Regardless of Social Status, Party Affiliation or Belief, Race: Libertarian, Democrat, Progressive or Republican or Other, All Americans Should Have the Right to Vote!Senator Barack Obama, speaking at Selma's Brown Chapel on the March 2007, anniversary of the 1965 Selma to Montgomery marches, recognized Vivian in his opening remarks in the words of Martin L. King Jr. as "the greatest preacher to ever live."Studying for the ministry at American Baptist Theological Seminary (now called American Baptist College) in Nashville, Tennessee, in 1959, Vivian met James Lawson, who was teaching Mohandas Gandhi's nonviolent direct action strategy to the Nashville Student Movement. Soon Lawson's students, including Diane Nash, Bernard Lafayette, James Bevel, John Lewis and others from American Baptist, Fisk University and Tennessee State University, organized a systematic nonviolent sit-in campaign at local lunch counters.Vivian helped found the Nashville Christian Leadership Conference, and helped organize the first sit-ins in Nashville in 1960 and the first civil rights march in 1961. In 1961, Vivian participated in Freedom Rides. He worked alongside Martin Luther King Jr. as the national director of affiliates for the SCLC. During the summer following the Selma Voting Rights Movement, Vivian is perhaps best known for, Vivian challenged Sheriff Jim Clark on the steps of the courthouse in Selma, Alabama, in 1965 during a drive to promote Black people to register to vote."You can turn your back on me, but you cannot turn your back upon the idea of justice," Vivian said to Clark as reporters recorded the interaction. "You can turn your back now and you can keep the club in your hand, but you cannot beat down justice. And we will register to vote, because as citizens of these United States we have the right to do it."Vivian conceived and directed an educational program, Vision, and put 702 Alabama students in college with scholarships (this program later became Upward Bound). His 1970 Black Power and the American Myth was the first book on the Civil Rights Movement by a member of Martin Luther King's staff. On August 8, 2013, President Barack Obama named Vivian as a recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom.Steve's own Memoir is "Three Quarters, Two Dimes, and a Nickel". As the medium has gained popularity, notable thinkers like Sapiens author Yuval Noah Harari and the late John Lewis have brought their stories to life beautifully in graphic novel form. We speak with Gareth about his creative and editorial workflow, and how he turns challenging works from Shakespeare, Homer, and others into a graphic novel. We also talk about how his background in video game design influences his work, and how he chooses stories that lend themselves well to his style of illustration. Bio Gareth Hinds is the creator of critically-acclaimed graphic novels based on literary classics, including Beowulf (which Publisher's Weekly called a “mixed-media gem”), King Lear (which Booklist named one of the top 10 graphic novels for teens), The Merchant of Venice (which Kirkus called “the standard that all others will strive to meet” for Shakespeare adaptation), The Odyssey (which garnered four starred reviews and a spot on ten “best of 2010” lists), Romeo and Juliet (which Kirkus called “spellbinding”), and Macbeth (which the New York Times called “stellar” and “a remarkably faithful rendering”). Gareth is a recipient of the Boston Public Library's “Literary Lights for Children” award. His books can be found in bookstores and English classrooms across the country, and his illustrations have appeared in such diverse venues as the Society of Illustrators, the New York Historical Society, and over a dozen published video games. *** Premium Episodes on Design Better This ad-supported episode is available to everyone.
