This episode we look at the phenomena of hugely successful artists refusing to play the songs that made them!  First among these is Radiohead, whose “Creep” launched them onto the world stage.  Others include The Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, Led Zeppelin, AC/DC, and Madonna.   Our Album You Must Hear Before You Die is The Stranglers' 1977 debut, the excellent “Rattus Norvegicus”, yet another punk record from the mid-70s. Mick loves this album for its energy and refusal to bow down to supposed “punk” rules.  We also look at some of the highlights of The Stranglers' outrageous career to this day.  In Rock News, Jeff examines the success (or otherwise) of a Quebec band called Angine de Poitrine, known for their complex, “microtonal” compositions and absurdist public image, featuring oversized papier-mâché masks and black-and-white polka-dotted costumes. What makes a great frontman? A technically perfect voice? Good looks? Someone who can work the stage and crowd? Someone who oozes personality, charisma, and showmanship? Does your mind instantly go to classic frontmen like Mick Jagger, Roger Daltrey, or Robert Plant? This week, we look at some of those frontmen who carried the torch during the classic alternative era. One of those guys is this week's Third Lad, Adam Sherman, the frontman for Boston power-pop rockers Private Lightning, who released an excellent underrated self-titled album for A&M Records in 1980. Following Private Lightning, Adam was the lead singer and songwriter in Americana band The Souls and a member of Boston rock n' roll institution Nervous Eaters. Adam's song from the last Nervous Eaters album, "Don't Need To Make You Mine" was named as the "Coolest Song in the World" on Little Steven's Underground Garage in 2024. Robert Plant is one of the true legends of rock n roll. His vocals made Led Zeppelin the biggest band in the world and his solo career is now in its 5th decade encompassing all sorts of different musical styles and genres. But Robert isn't a man who needs to trade on his past to get by. While he doesn't forget where he comes from, he's one to always push forward to explore new sounds and new collaborators to fulfill his yearning for making music. It makes for a great night out with Suzi Dian and Saving Grace, with whom he recorded an album of celtic/bluegrass/country tunes, all of which were covers or traditionals. His voice is still very smooth and perfect for the music he's choosing to make today. He doesn't have the ferocious yawp of 70s Robert Plant but he reworks some Zeppelin classics to fit the style of his band, the music he plays and how he performs today. So you'll hear about a reworked Ramble On, a true to form Four Sticks and a raucous version of Friends. But he also gives Calling to You a makeover, as well as an amazing and soulful I'm In The Mood which he and Suzi make new again with their voices in unison. If you want to see a bunch of Zeppelin tunes performed the way they sounded on the albums, go see Jason Bonham's Led Zeppelin Evening (you can hear our review of that show from November, 2025) as it's an awesome show. But if you want to see a true legend still shine with new music and some nods to his past, you might not have a better night than seeing Robert Plant on this tour. Robert Plant is one of the true legends of rock n roll. His vocals made Led Zeppelin the biggest band in the world and his solo career is now in its 5th decade encompassing all sorts of different musical styles and genres. But Robert isn't a man who needs to trade on his past to get by. While he doesn't forget where he comes from, he's one to always push forward to explore new sounds and new collaborators to fulfill his yearning for making music. It makes for a great night out with Suzi Dian and Saving Grace, with whom he recorded an album of celtic/bluegrass/country tunes, all of which were covers or traditionals. His voice is still very smooth and perfect for the music he's choosing to make today. He doesn't have the ferocious yawp of 70s Robert Plant but he reworks some Zeppelin classics to fit the style of his band, the music he plays and how he performs today. So you'll hear about a reworked Ramble On, a true to form Four Sticks and a raucous version of Friends. But he also gives Calling to You a makeover, as well as an amazing and soulful I'm In The Mood which he and Suzi make new again with their voices in unison. If you want to see a bunch of Zeppelin tunes performed the way they sounded on the albums, go see Jason Bonham's Led Zeppelin Evening (you can hear our review of that show from November, 2025) as it's an awesome show. But if you want to see a true legend still shine with new music and some nods to his past, you might not have a better night than seeing Robert Plant on this tour. Alex revealed in a recent interview that he's been teaming up with Steve Lukather to help bring these recordings to life. These aren't scraps or demos either—this is music that was intended to become the next Van Halen album before Eddie's passing. The foundation is already there, with drums, guitars, and bass recorded—bass handled by Wolfgang Van Halen. But don't expect a quick release. I first noticed Marc Ribot's slinky, spiky guitar playing as “Jockey Full of Bourbon,” from Tom Waits' Rain Dogs, slithered over the opening of Jim Jarmusch's Down By Law. Rain Dogs was a breakthrough for Ribot, who previously had played in Brother Jack McDuff's soul-jazz band, backed Wilson Pickett and Solomon Burke, and been a member of the Lounge Lizards. More Waits collaborations followed, as did work with Elvis Costello, Sam Phillips, McCoy Tyner, Yoko Ono, Robert Plant and Allison Krauss, Elton John and Leon Russell, and many others. Here Ribot reflects on his robust studio-musician and solo career; his love of Latin American music; the creative leeway that Waits, Costello and others gave him; the impact of producers such as T Bone Burnett and Hal Willner; his decision to sing lead for the first time on his long-gestating 2025 album, Map of a Blue City; and his fight for indie musicians' rights with the Music Workers Alliance. The segment spirals into classic Carton Show chaos with outrageous World Cup ticket prices, flipping Super Bowl–level seats for massive profit, NASCAR pit dreams, a humiliating dirt track racing story, Mets vs Jets coaching debates, and nonstop WFAN laughs.

Here's a cosmic riddle for you: A blind man and a mod walk into a bar…. Is it a coffee bar, with a make-shift stage on a corner platform, attended by the beatnik intelligentsia?, or is it a sweaty discotheque packed with beautiful people unabashedly swinging their hips?   It's definitely a transmogrifying chamber where the musical output of a sharecropper or convict from the work farm can be turned into sexy jazzbo stylings through the sleight of hand of some nifty cultural appropriation and syncopated finesse. There are many manifestations of the “blues” and here we have two vastly different - practically unrecognizable from each other - masters - Sleepy John Estes (1899-1977), and Georgie Fame (born 1943) - existing across the pond, across generations, and across many layers of lived experience, but bonded by their singular love of this primitive music that started in the Mississippi delta, and went on to conquer the world. SLEEPY JOHN ESTESEverybody thought that Sleepy John Estes was dead because Big Bill Broonzy said so. Blind in one eye, folks called him “sleepy” because of a low blood pressure disorder, or some believed he had narcolepsy. He started recording in the 20's with Hammie Nixon on harp, made some records, went basically “radio silent” throughout the 40s and 50s until Sam Charters rediscovered him in 1962, blind and frail, and kick-started his late in life fame. “Rats in my Kitchen” was recorded at Sun Studios in 1952, but it wasn't until 10 years later that his recording career gained traction, fueled by those he was influencing across the pond, like Robert Plant of Led Zeppelin. Sleepy John always wrote about his life, and this record has an almost journalistic authenticity. GEORGIE FAMEWhat can one say about Georgie Fame? The man has style for days, and it was thus from the very beginning - in shark skin suits, tab collars, and skinny ties. Born in 1943 as Clive Powell, Georgie Fame and his Blue Flames made their bones swinging his Hammond organ in the mod clubs of the early 60s, and had big commercial hits with Yeh Yeh, and The Ballad of Bonnie and Clyde. Recently, he's name checked all over the place, and has done notable collaborations with Van Morrison and others. In Parchman Farm you can hear the undeniable influence of the coolest of the cool white blues men, Mose Allison, and the organ of Booker T and the MGs' Green Onions - a persuasive combination. I'm sure that Bukka White, who wrote this bottle neck Delta blues shouter in 1940 had no inkling that his experience in the Mississippi State Pen would become such a sexy signature tune. You never can tell….

Eric also saw the Joe Perry Project's supergroup lineup featuring Chris Robinson and Robert DeLeo, enjoyed a nostalgic double bill of Billy Idol and Joan Jett at the Xfinity Center, caught the rising stars Wet Leg at a packed Roadrunner Boston show, experienced Jeff Tweedy's multigenerational band at Royale, and closed out his year with Throwing Muses at the new Racket venue in New York City.Jessica Catena attended three memorable indoor concerts that kept her dry after previous years of rain-soaked shows. She saw young jazz sensation Samara Joy at the newly renovated Ridgefield Playhouse in Connecticut with her uncle, experienced the Broadway spectacle of Moulin Rouge featuring Wayne Brady and Taye Diggs with updated contemporary songs, and capped off her year at iHeartRadio's Jingle Ball at Madison Square Garden, where she saw Ed Sheeran, Laufey, and a diverse lineup of pop and folk artists while dealing with some challenging sightlines.Summer's concert year included the intimate Metro show with Bridget Calls Me Baby where her son met the bass player's parents, a record-breaking night at Lollapalooza featuring Olivia Rodrigo's surprise Weezer collaboration, an energetic Yungblud performance at the Riviera that included some crowd drama, and a unique operatic interpretation of Smashing Pumpkins' Melancholy and the Infinite Sadness at the Lyric Opera of Chicago during a snowstorm.Art Gregg had a remarkable year highlighted by three unforgettable shows. He saw childhood hero Burton Cummings of The Guess Who at the North Shore Center for Performing Arts after accidentally meeting him in the lobby without recognizing him, caught Michael Schenker's 50 Years with UFO celebration at the Desplaines Theater, and scored a last-minute ninth-row ticket to see Robert Plant at the intimate Vic Theatre, where the Led Zeppelin legend performed six classic songs including an electrifying version of Ramble On that earned a rare standing ovation.Charles rounds out the discussion by mentioning his own concert experiences at new Chicago venues including Space in Evanston where he saw Mdou Moctar and The Old 97s, the female-focused Motoblot festival at Beat Kitchen, an incredible Buddy Guy performance at the Rialto Square Theater where the 89-year-old blues legend walked through the aisles playing guitar, shows at the new Garcia's venue and City Winery, and his anticipation for an upcoming Iron Maiden show. In 1978, Paul and saxophonist Arno Hecht founded the well-known group called the Uptown Horns. As their visibility increased, the band was recruited for rock and roll gigs and played many of New York's most famous clubs. Paul and the Uptown Horns went on their first rock and roll tour with the J. Geils Band in 1981 and that led to many other opportunities including engagements with The Rolling Stones, Robert Plant, Tom Waits, Joe Cocker, James Brown, Pat Benatar, and Ray Charles. The band lists recording credits on over 150 albums including James Brown's Grammy Award winning "Living in America" and tracks for Joe Cocker, Albert Collins, Bonnie Raitt, Robert Palmer, Lou Reed and REM. In addition to continuing to play music, he began writing and found critical success with Hoboken to Hollywood, which earned him the 2011 Ovation Award for Musical Direction. Paul was also awarded Best Musical Direction by Stage Scene LA for Louis & Keely: Live' at the Sahara, which had a record run, playing to sold out audiences at the Geffen Playhouse. "Hollywood" Paul earned his nickname back in the 1980's due to his prodigious knowledge of film lore. Though his extensive contributions to the LA music scene have also helped add to that fabulous moniker. Paul's fame is within the world of Rock and Roll. On his latest album, "The Litteral Truth," he brings us a collection of songs that inspired his personal musical development. The Brecker Brothers, Edgar Winter and Steely Dan are a few of the artists we cover on the record, and revisiting these great cuts and reinterpreting them was a joyous excursion for all involved.
