That's next on The Lost Sci-Fi Podcast. Before he became one of the most respected names in modern hard science fiction, Ben Bova was a kid growing up in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, born November 8, 1932, discovering the future one pulp magazine at a time.Like many writers of his generation, Bova fell in love with science fiction as a reader first. That early fascination stayed with him. He studied journalism at Temple University, served in the U.S. Army, and eventually stepped into publishing — not just as a writer, but as an editor who would help shape the direction of the field itself.Ben Bova wrote more than 100 short stories and more than 20 novels. He didn't write about magical futures. He wrote about futures we could build. But before his reputation as a novelist took off, he became one of the most influential editors in science fiction history. In 1972, he succeeded John W. Campbell as editor of Analog Science Fiction and Fact — a monumental moment in the genre. Under Bova's leadership, Analog continued its tradition of serious, science-based storytelling. For his editorial work, he won the Hugo Award for Best Professional Editor six consecutive times, from 1973 through 1978.Bova also served as President of the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America.Today's story was his very first science fiction short story — the beginning of a career that would span decades and help define modern hard science fiction. From Amazing Science Fiction Stories in February 1960 our story begins on page 6, A Long Way Back by Ben Bova…Next on The Lost Sci-Fi Podcast, An automated giant is crippled in space, and the only man who can save it swore he would never touch a liner again. EPISODE 680 - John Newton - Historical science fiction, a stone that heals anything, look-alikes, and time travelers losing their toolsAbout John NewtonBorn in Simi Valley, California, John Newton attended twelve different schools until he finally got it right and was graduated from a high school on the Mediterranean island of Cyprus. He is currently working as an electrical engineer, robotics programmer, landlord, part time farmer, and father of seven. We've got 15 books and series here, so there should be something to love for almost every reader (although we need some traditional fantasy page turners – send us some recommendations in the comments please)! Plus, at the end of the episode we each rank our personal top 3. We intentionally excluded YA and military sci-fi books, although those are often also page-turners - look out for episodes about each of those soon! Brent's brother, Alex, joined us for this episode, and brought us a whole new batch of books (and frankly a couple new subgenres) to enjoy. LitRPG / progression fantasy just keep getting more popular, and we can see why – the books we've picked up have all been so, so fun to read (although it probably helps we've been reading Alex's recommendations so far, the best of the best from the hundreds of LitRPG books he's read). Toni Morrison's work undeniably reshaped American literature, and her influence extended well beyond her novels like Beloved or The Bluest Eye. Morrison confronted slavery, identity, trauma - as well as beauty - as she centered Black experiences. Morrison changed not only what stories were told, but how they were told.rnrnHarvard professor and award-winning author Namwali Serpell's latest book On Morrison, argues that Morrison's literary skill often gets overshadowed by her public image as a Black female writer. On Morrison takes readers through her canon of literature, and focuses on the artistry and technique, demonstrating "how to read Morrison with the seriousness that she deserves."rnrnNamwali Serpell was born in Lusaka and lives in New York. She is the author of multiple award-winning books, and her debut novel, The Old Drift, won an Anisfield-Wolf Book Award, the Arthur C. I call it The Daily Mess. A chronological walk through an everyday world. Yes, it's my morning writing. As a receiver of thoughts and ideas, we as people tend to throw it to the side and deal with it later. When a subject arrives, I dig in. It's still keeping a journal! You may have heard we got a bit of winter weather a couple weeks ago which means our dear Stardaddy had to do some catch up at the ol' day job. While he was out contributing to society, the rest of us got together to plot a revolution against his tyrannical ways. This week we crack open Revolt! by Jason Price (gifted to us by Brian over at Spirits and Monsters of Old Seattle). This DM-less tabletop roleplaying game uses a beautifully rendered deck of story telling prompts along with a gorgeous fabric map to guide players in constructing a tale of growing revolution set in a fantasy land of frogs, grasshoppers, ants, and other wee creatures. Heads up, this is a long episode with a lighter editing hand. We hope you enjoy a little bit of whimsy before we dive back into our regularly scheduled program next week!Send us a message through this weird thing that didn't exist before but exists now.Support the show
