In the distance he sees a tall building that looks as though it is made of green porcelain, but instead of heading to this new discovery, he heads into one of the Morlock wells. It takes him a long time to climb down the 200 yard deep well, and he nearly falls, being nearly too heavy for the climbing hooks to hold. He finds a small tunnel where he rests before being awakened by a Morlock touching him. He quickly lights a match, causing the creature to flee, and he makes his way through the tunnel into a large cave. He sees some huge machines lining the walls and a light metal table with some White coloured meat laying on it. His matches are running low, and the creatures are getting more confident around him and he decides that it is a good idea to flee before they swarm him. Exhausting all of his matches, he only narrowly escapes the Morlock's clutches. SEO Stuff that I don't want to do lol...One of the most influential pieces of fiction of all time, The Time Machine by H. G. Wells, sees a Victorian scientist send himself forward to the year 802,701 AD. He is delighted to find that suffering has been replaces by beauty and happiness, and a "new man", the Eloi, has descended from man. Science Fiction book, Sci-fi, Classic Literature

Tonight on Triple Feature, Mark Radulich and Mac Kettner embark on a cinematic journey through the bold, genre-bending filmography of the Wachowski Sisters, tracing their artistic evolution from the noir-tight thriller Bound (1996), through the ambitious, time-hopping epic Cloud Atlas (2012), to the sprawling, space-operatic chaos of Jupiter Ascending (2015).We begin with Bound, their directorial debut—a lean, tightly constructed neo-noir starring Gina Gershon and Jennifer Tilly. While remembered today for its stylized depiction of a lesbian relationship and its feminist reversal of genre tropes, the film also laid the groundwork for the Wachowskis' signature style: sharp visual framing, subversive gender politics, and a meticulous blend of genre tradition and rebellion. Critics at the time praised its confidence and tension, and it's since become a cult classic, often cited for how it queered the crime genre with both sensuality and grit.Fast forward to Cloud Atlas, a deeply ambitious adaptation of David Mitchell's novel. Co-directed with Tom Tykwer, the film features a sprawling ensemble cast—Tom Hanks, Halle Berry, Hugh Grant, Jim Broadbent, Doona Bae—playing multiple interconnected roles across six timelines. Aesthetic maximalism meets spiritual recursion here: past lives, future consequences, and the collapse of individual identity into something larger. The film was divisive, praised for its ambition but criticized for its complex structure and controversial use of makeup. Still, in retrospect, Cloud Atlas is regarded as a turning point—a declaration that the Wachowskis were more interested in ideas than in simple spectacle. Finally, we crash into Jupiter Ascending—a wildly uneven, endlessly fascinating space opera starring Mila Kunis and Channing Tatum. The film throws genetic royalty, flying rollerblades, Eddie Redmayne whisper-shouting, and bureaucratic intergalactic dynasties into a blender. It's messy, no doubt. But it's also unmistakably Wachowskian: rich with metaphor, post-capitalist critique, and gendered power struggles wrapped in ridiculous sci-fi fantasy. It was largely panned upon release, but like much of their work, Jupiter Ascending has developed a loyal fanbase who see past the surface chaos to the emotional and thematic sincerity underneath.Through these three films, we trace the Wachowski Sisters' cinematic transformation: from intimate noir storytellers to high-concept philosophers to unapologetically maximalist dreamers. No matter the box office or Rotten Tomatoes score, their work consistently pushes boundaries—of genre, identity, and cinematic form itself. So buckle in. We're talking legacy, aesthetics, ideas, and all the gloriously weird stuff in between.Disclaimer: The following may contain offensive language, adult humor, and/or content that some viewers may find offensive – The views and opinions expressed by any one speaker does not explicitly or necessarily reflect or represent those of Mark Radulich or W2M Network.Mark Radulich and his wacky podcast on all the things:https://linktr.ee/markkind76alsohttps://www.teepublic.com/user/radulich-in-broadcasting-networkFB Messenger: Mark Radulich LCSWTiktok: @markradulichtwitter: @MarkRadulichInstagram: markkind76RIBN Album Playlist: https://suno.com/playlist/91d704c9-d1ea-45a0-9ffe-5069497bad59

Even though we know that some past episodes have probably spent too much time talking about awards, our latest chat begins with some thoughts on—well, awards. With Nebulas, Hugos, Shirley Jackson, Ignyte, World Fantasy, etc., there are just too many to ignore. We soon drift off into other topics. Gary is looking forward to hosting a panel discussion at the Locus Awards, and is fascinated by Kemi Ashing-Giwa's 2023 novel The Splinter in the Sky, which leads into a discussion of how space opera-like stories have evolved over generations, what else we've read lately, how short story contracts have changed lately, whether there is a dearth of core SF or just an explosion of fantasy, and why Murderbot feels more like classic SF than many franchise properties. As usual, a laser-like focus on nothing in particular.

In this episode we dive headfirst into 86's brutal drone war nonsense. The Republic claims a “bloodless conflict,” but it's really run on invisible 86ers shoved into glass-cannon mechs. We chat about Lena's efforts to bring hope to Shin and his crew, and what this anime reminds us of in terms of undertones that were not so subtle. We also touch on Shin's psychic telepathy angle and that slow-burn connection between him and Lena. In this exciting episode of Reading with Your Kids, host Jed Doherty sits down with two incredible authors, Samantha van Leer and Michelle Barry, who are revolutionizing science fiction for young readers. These talented writers are breaking ground in a genre that's been surprisingly underserved - middle grade sci-fi. Samantha van Leer's "Extraterrestrial Zoo" takes readers on a wild adventure following 13-year-old Ava, who manages a zoo filled with alien creatures after a hurricane releases them into the woods of Maine. Meanwhile, Michelle Barry's "Plotting the Stars" reimagines "The Secret Garden" on a moon-based boarding school, blending magic and technology in a way that will captivate young imaginations. Both authors share a passionate mission: filling the gap in children's literature for science fiction that speaks directly to middle grade readers. They've noticed that while kids are obsessed with sci-fi movies, video games, and TV shows, there's a serious shortage of books that match their interests. The conversation dives deep into world-building, discussing how these authors create complex, believable universes that feel both fantastic and grounded. They also explore the broader appeal of science fiction - it's not just about aliens and spaceships, but about exploring human potential, technology, and imagination.  Parents will love hearing about the educational potential of these books. From encouraging STEM interest to exploring complex themes of personal discovery, these sci-fi stories do more than entertain - they inspire. We also spoke with Bonnie Swinehart about her Benji series of stories based in and aroubd the Pennsylvania Amish Community. Whether your young reader is dreaming of space exploration, magical abilities, or just loves a good adventure, these books offer something special. They prove that science fiction isn't just for adults - it's a gateway to wonder, creativity, and endless possibilities for kids. Get ready to blast off into a new reading adventure! On Episode 135 of The Film '89 Podcast, Neil, Skye and Steve celebrate the 35th anniversary of yet another Arnold Schwarzenegger film, this time it's the 1990 action-science-fiction classic, Total Recall. Following on from the recent success of our Commando episode, the guys are once again giving their in-depth analysis of a film starring one of the Film '89 team's favourite movie stars, but this time, they're also discussing one of their favourite directors, Dutch filmmaker Paul Verhoeven. They discuss the source short story by Philip K. Dick upon which Total Recall is based as well as the making of this big budget special effects spectacle - at the time, one of the most expensive films ever made. The guys also dissect the film's fiendishly complex plot and the many themes, layers and socio-political commentary that Verhoeven weaves into the film. Featuring a superb supporting cast including Sharon Stone, Rachel Ticotin, Michael Ironside and Ronny Cox, an incredible score by Jerry Goldsmith and incredible special effects that hold up 35 years on, Total Recall is a timeless classic and is given the usual Film '89 treatment.

For decades, writers and filmmakers have imagined worlds where characters can do things like watch a double sunset (on Tatooine, of course), or stand among the sand dunes of Arrakis, or gaze at the gas-giant planet Polyphemus from the moon Pandora. But even as works like Star Wars, Dune, and Avatar have enticed us with their fictional renditions of planets beyond our reach, astronomers have slowly begun to compile a set of scientific truths about the actual exoplanets. In this episode, Jacke talks to author Keith Cooper (Amazing Worlds of Science Fiction and Science Fact) about the realities beyond imaginary planets. PLUS Jacke takes a look at two AI-related pieces of news: the recovery of writing long thought to be lost on a scroll charred by Vesuvian ash, and a summer reading list that surprised everyone - including the authors who made the list for reasons they were not expecting. We're not just a tech podcast; we're a tech & culture podcast. So today, we’re revisiting the charming and prescient 1999 Disney Channel Original movie Smart House. Directed by the multi-talented Levar Burton, it explores the role of smart home technology on a suburban family from a time when that technology was pure science fiction. It's not only a fun movie, but underneath its G-rated Disney veneer is a movie that has a lot to say about gender, relationships, labor, and the human experience. A major part of the movie is the kids' grappling with the loss of their mother, which hits home for Bridget at this time in her own life. Bridget recaps the film with Producer Mike to explore what it gets right, what it gets wrong, and what it’s trying to say about technology and the people who use it. Do you like film recap episodes like this? Should we do more of them? Should we never do another? Please let us know what you think, and send movie suggestions!
