Groong Week in Review - June 1, 2025In this episode of Groong's Week in Review, recorded on June 2, 2025, guest Benyamin Poghosyan joins hosts Hovik Manucharyan and Asbed Bedrossian to unpack a tense and volatile week in both regional and domestic politics. The conversation opens with rising tensions in the Ukraine war, as drone strikes reach deep into Russia, Germany lifts missile restrictions, and Trump labels Putin “crazy,” all while Iran nuclear talks remain frozen under hardline U.S. demands. The focus then shifts to the South Caucasus, where Turkish FM Hakan Fidan met Lavrov in Moscow to push the “3+3” platform and floated Istanbul as a summit venue for global powers. Meanwhile, Erdogan, Aliyev, and Pakistan's PM Sharif staged a PR spectacle in Lachin to inaugurate a third airport in occupied Artsakh, signaling strategic realignments. Back in Armenia, the Pashinyans launched harsh verbal attacks on the Armenian Church just as Baku's Grand Mufti claimed Etchmiadzin as Azerbaijani land, prompting questions of tacit coordination. The episode also revisits the impeachment debate versus opposition planning for the 2026 elections, probing whether security and corruption can drive real political traction. Finally, the hosts spotlight the rise of regime-aligned oligarch Narek Nalbandyan, whose sweetheart deals, state-enabled asset grabs, and government-backed expansion raise serious concerns about the erosion of anti-corruption values in Armenia today.TopicsStatus of Ukraine and US-Iran CrisesHakan Fidan in MoscowErdogan, Aliyev, Sharif in LachinAzerbaijan and Pashinyan Attack the Armenian ChurchImpeachment vs. ElectionsThe Kitchen SinkGuest: Benyamin PoghosyanHostsHovik ManucharyanAsbed BedrossianEpisode 442 | Recorded: June 2, 2025SHOW NOTES: https://podcasts.groong.org/442VIDEO: https://youtu.be/oo_B7xhOVlMSubscribe and follow us everywhere you are: linktr.ee/groong

UN describes Gaza as 'hungriest place on earth' "The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs has described Gaza as “the hungriest place on earth,” calling for immediate access to aid deliveries. Spokesperson Jens Laerke said nearly 180,000 pallets of food and life-saving supplies are ready to enter but remain blocked, despite being cleared and paid for. Israel has prevented food aid from entering the enclave since March, worsening the humanitarian crisis. " Israel kills five more aid workers in Gaza "Five aid workers from the Istanbul-based IHH Humanitarian Relief Foundation, working with the UN World Food Programme, have been killed in recent Israeli attacks on Gaza, the organisation announced. Two others were seriously wounded in the strikes over the past two days. IHH confirmed the deaths in a statement on X, condemning the attacks by Israeli forces." Russia proposes second round of direct talks with Ukraine in Istanbul on Monday "Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov announced Moscow has formally proposed June 2 as the date for a second round of direct talks with Ukraine in Istanbul. The proposal follows initial negotiations held on May 16 in the same city. Lavrov credited Türkiye, United States and Saudi Arabia for helping create the conditions to resume the dialogue." US court blocks Trump's tariffs from going into effect "A US trade court has blocked President Donald Trump's ""Liberation Day"" tariffs, ruling he exceeded his authority by imposing broad duties on imports from trade-surplus nations. The Court of International Trade stated that only Congress holds the constitutional power to regulate foreign commerce, which cannot be overridden by presidential emergency powers. The judges emphasised that the decision was based on legal limits, not the effectiveness of the tariff strategy." Bangladesh sends first mango shipment to China as ties with India sour "Bangladesh sent its first consignment of mangoes to China, a symbolic move marking deepening ties with Beijing following strained relations with India. The export comes as China courts Dhaka in the wake of the 2024 uprising that ousted former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who later fled to New Delhi. China's ambassador hailed the shipment as a “historic moment,” standing alongside Bangladeshi officials during the send-off."

President Trump said last week that the Kremlin occupation of Crimea is not being discussed right now, and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov tells "Face the Nation with Margaret Brennan" that the occupation is a "done deal." Russia does not "negotiate its own territory," Lavrov said. Russian President Vladimir Putin forcibly took the territory from Ukraine in 2014, and returning the territory is considered a red line for Ukraine. Pope Francis' funeral is drawing hordes of tourists and could drive up U.S. airfares to Rome, according to travel experts. After Russia's latest strike on the Ukrainian capital Kyiv, which was the deadliest assault on the city since July 2024 and drew a rebuke from President Trump, Margaret Brennan asks Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov: "What made it worth killing civilians when Ukraine says it's ready for a ceasefire?" "We only target military goals or civilian sites used by the military," Lavrov says. * Israel bombs Gaza's Al-Ahli Baptist Hospital Israeli military has carried out air strikes on the Al-Ahli Baptist Hospital in the central besieged Gaza. The attack destroyed the hospital's admissions and emergency building, which was hit by two missiles. The Gaza Media Office said Israel committed another horrific crime by bombing the hospital, which housed hundreds of patients, the wounded and medical staff. * Hamas delegation heads to Cairo for talks with mediators Meanwhile, Hamas has announced that a delegation, headed by senior official Khalil Al-Hayya, departed for Cairo to meet Egyptian and Qatari mediators as part of efforts to reach an agreement and end the Israeli onslaught against besieged Gaza. The Palestine resistance group has said there will be meetings and follow-ups with mediators from Qatar and Egypt, as part of ongoing efforts aimed at reaching an agreement and stopping the Zionist aggression. * BRICS members express 'serious concern' over US' reciprocal tariffs China has said that BRICS members discussed US reciprocal tariffs and expressed "serious concern" about trade tensions. Beijing said that Washington's tariffs have severely undermined the international trade system, disrupted global industrial and supply chains, and caused a prolonged impact on the world economy during the second meeting of the BRICS Contact Group on Economic and Trade Issues earlier this week. * Trump finds unlikely praise from Lavrov at Antalya Diplomacy Forum Amid widespread global criticism of US President Donald Trump for a series of controversial foreign policy decisions, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov offered an unexpected endorsement during a freewheeling exchange at the 4th Antalya Diplomacy Forum. Speaking on the second day of the high-profile international event, Lavrov said, “President Trump seems to understand much, much, much more about what is going on in Ukraine than any European leader, emphasising what he described as Trump's nuanced grasp of the Russia-Ukraine conflict—unlike his European counterparts. * Turkish First Lady calls for peace to become 'prevailing force' Türkiye's first lady, Emine Erdogan, has called for peace to become the "prevailing force", adding that humanity cannot endure more conflict and wars. "On the contrary, it now expects areas of cooperation to be established, uncertainty to be resolved, and peace to become the prevailing force," Erdogan said in an address to the Antalya Diplomacy Forum (AFD).

This is the Catchup on 3 Things by The Indian Express and I'm Ichha SharmaToday is the 27th of March and here are the headlines.A day after a face-off in the Lok Sabha over Speaker Om Birla abruptly adjourning the House after noting that members, especially Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi, should conduct themselves “in a manner that maintains the high standards and dignity” of Parliament, a delegation of INDIA bloc parties met Birla today and raised concerns over a range of issues, including the “politicisation of the statement made by Birla outside the House”. A letter was submitted by the delegation to Birla, which The Indian Express has learnt contained eight broad points, including “non-appointment of Deputy Speaker in Lok Sabha”, “denial of speaking opportunity to the Leader of Opposition (LoP)”, and “disregard for Business Advisory Committee (BAC) decisions”.Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy moved a resolution against delimitation in the legislative assembly today. The resolution read, quote “The house expresses its deep concern on the manner in which the impending delimitation exercise is being planned, without transparent consultations with stakeholders.” unquote. The resolution was later adopted by the House and passed. Reddy posted about it on X stating:quote “…We passed a resolution today asking the Centre not to take any steps that compromise the political self-respect and legitimate rights of our people. People of Telangana and citizens of all other states of south India are united in protecting our rights”, unquoteThree separate Private Member Bills are coming up in the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly – two by the ruling National Conference legislators and the third by an independent legislator – seeking the restoration of statehood. The Bills for restoration of statehood for Jammu and Kashmir would come up for discussion on April 7. The Private Member Bill introduced by National Conference legislator reads, quote “The House resolves that statehood be restored immediately as promised by the central government in the Parliament of India,” unquoteRussian President Vladimir Putin is set to visit India soon, the country's Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov confirmed in a televised address today. Speaking at the “Russia and India: Toward a New Bilateral Agenda” conference, hosted by the Russian International Affairs Council (RIAC), Lavrov said preparations for Putin's visit are underway. While the date of Putin visit has not been disclosed, it follows Prime Minister Narendra Modi's trip to Russia in July 2024—his first in nearly five years. Modi had previously visited Vladivostok in 2019 for an economic conclave. During last year's visit, he formally invited Putin to India.US President Donald Trump has decided to expand his trade war to the world's most traded product — automobiles and auto parts — by announcing 25 per cent tariffs on them from April 3. This has raised the uncertainty over Indian exports of auto components worth nearly $7 billion to the US and their future growth potential in the North American market. Citing national security concerns, the White House said that automobiles would be subject to 25 per cent tariffs starting on April 3 — a day after US reciprocal tariffs are set to come into effect — while auto parts would face similar tariffs “no later than May 3 2025,” unless such actions are expressly “reduced, modified, or terminated.”This was the Catch Up on 3 Things by the Indian Express.

* Netanyahu orders prep for ceasefire talks under US proposal Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu held a meeting with a delegation that returned from Qatar to discuss ceasefire negotiations in Gaza. At the end of the meeting that included ministers and security officials, Netanyahu ordered preparations for negotiations under a proposal by US President Donald Trump's Special Mideast Envoy Steve Witkoff. The proposal includes the immediate release of 11 Israeli hostages and the remains of half of the deceased captives. Israeli media previously reported that Witkoff presented a new proposal during ceasefire talks in Doha. * US, Russia discuss Ukraine, Yemen strikes US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Russia's Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov spoke to discuss the next stage in talks on ending the Ukraine war. According to State Department spokeswoman Tammy Bruce, the top diplomats "agreed to continue working towards restoring communication between the United States and Russia". Rubio also updated Lavrov on military activity in the Middle East, where US forces carried out deadly strikes against Houthis in Yemen. * Over 100,000 rally in Serbia against Vucic government At least 100,000 people descended on Belgrade for a mass rally seen as a culmination of months-long protests against Serbia's President Aleksandar Vucic and his government. Large crowds of flag-waving protesters clogged the downtown area of the capital despite occasional rain, with people hardly able to move and many stuck hundreds of metres away from the planned protest venue. Police said the crowd reached 107,000 people with no major incidents reported. Serbian independent media described the rally as the biggest ever in the country, saying the numbers were much higher. * Bangladeshi students urge UN to seek ICC trial for Hasina Bangladeshi student representatives urged the United Nations to assist in taking former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's case to the International Criminal Court over alleged crimes against humanity committed during the July uprising last year. The demand was made on Saturday during a meeting between a student delegation and visiting UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres in Dhaka. Guterres is in Bangladesh for a four-day visit, set to conclude on Sunday. * Trump mutes Voice of America, employees put on leave President Donald Trump's administration has begun making deep cuts to Voice of America and other government-run, pro-democracy programming, with the organisation's director saying all VOA employees have been put on leave. On Friday night, shortly after Congress passed its latest funding bill, Trump directed his administration to reduce the functions of several agencies to the minimum required by law. That included the US Agency for Global Media, which houses Voice of America, Radio Free Europe and Asia and Radio Marti, which beams Spanish-language news into Cuba.

Russia agreed to assist President Donald Trump’s administration in communicating with Iran on issues including the Islamic Republic’s nuclear program and its support for regional anti-US proxies, according to people familiar with the situation.Trump relayed that interest directly to President Vladimir Putin in a phone call in February and top officials from his administration discussed the matter with their Russian counterparts at talks in Saudi Arabia days later, people familiar with the matter in Moscow said, declining to be identified because of the sensitivity of the issue. White House officials did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Neither Russia nor Iran have publicly confirmed or denied the request. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said in response to questions sent by Bloomberg that “Russia believes that the United States and Iran should resolve all problems through negotiations” and that Moscow “is ready to do everything in its power to achieve this.” A spokesman for Iran’s foreign ministry, when asked if Russia had offered to mediate between Tehran and Washington, said only it was “natural” for countries to offer their assistance. “Given the significance of these matters, it’s possible that many parties will show good will and readiness to help with various problems,” the spokesman, Esmaeil Baghaei, said during a televised press conference Monday in Tehran. “From this perspective, it’s natural that countries will present an offer of help if it’s needed.” The ministry didn’t respond to questions from Bloomberg News. Since taking office about six weeks ago, Trump has tried to restore relations with President Vladimir Putin, which the US severed after Russia’s 2022 full-scale invasion of Ukraine. As Trump seeks to broker an end to that war directly with Putin — including a Feb. 12 phone call between the two leaders — both sides have signaled they’re open to cooperating on other geopolitical interests, including trade routes and resources in the Arctic. Top US and Russian officials, including Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, discussed Washington’s interest in Moscow helping with Iranian issues, during a Feb. 18 meeting in Riyadh, according to people with knowledge of the situation, asking not to be identified as not all details of those talks have been made public. On this week's Defense & Aerospace Report Washington Roundtable, Dr. Patrick Cronin of the Hudson Institute think tank, Michael Herson of American Defense International, former Pentagon Europe chief Jim Townsend now with the Center for a New American Security, and former Pentagon comptroller Dr. Dov Zakheim of the Center for Strategic and International Studies join Defense & Aerospace Report Editor Vago Muradian to discuss President Trump's continuing demand for a “big beautiful bill” that includes all his priorities and the Senate passage of its version of the border bill without the massive tax cuts or other legislation the president wants; lawmakers seek to boost defense spending while the Pentagon presses military services to cut 6 percent a year over five years from their budgets that would be redirected to fund new priorities like border security, the Iron Dome air and missile defense initiative the border as well as unmanned systems, attack submarines and the strategic nuclear deterrent; in Riyadh, Secretary of State Marco Rubio meets with his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov to betray Ukraine and rehabilitate Russia and its economy as Trump denounces Volodymyr Zelenskyy as an unpopular dictator who started the war, mirroring Moscow's propaganda; Washington took on an even more Stalinist flavor as the administration suggested it has submitted to Congress a list of senior officers that would be fired including the Chairman, the Chief of Naval Operations, and the Army chief of staff, although sources said the list was “unofficial” and may have been floated as both a warning to those named and to distract attention after a bad week; European leaders met in Paris, vowing support for Ukraine and pledging to continue punishing Russia as faith in America as a reliable ally and global leader evaporates as many wonder whether Washington represents a threat; as America commits great power suicide, China mounts an aggressive PR campaign to paint the United States as an unreliable actor and pledges to fill the void left in the abrupt end American aid and leadership; what's next as the bodies of dead Israeli hostages including two small children are exchanged and Washington sticks to its plan to depopulate Gaza and redevelop it.
