On todays podcast, I speak with 1 RAR / Australian Special Forces SASR regiment veteran Troy Simmonds. Troy had a decorated career that included deployments to Somalia, East Timor, Iraq, and Afghanistan, he was also a member of the domestic counterterrorism team TAG West. As a kid, Troy always wanted to join the SAS after being given a book when he was little. Troy joined the army in 1991. Troys dream became a reality when he was selected to join the Perth-based SAS Regiment in 1996. Troy joined the SASR during one of the most operationally active periods of its history. As well, he was a member of TAG for the Sydney Olympics in 2000. In 2008, while in 3 SQN, Troy was the Patrol Commander of the lead patrol in the battle, known as the Battle of Khas Uruzgan, which was one of the bloodiest engagements involving Australian troops during the Afghanistan campaign. Nine in his team of thirteen were wounded in action against a Taliban force of over 150 over the 2-hour battle. It would result in one of Troy's team, Mark Donaldson, being awarded Australia's first Victoria Cross in 40 years. Troy was wounded three times in that furious battle and still has a Taliban bullet in his pelvis today. In 2012, after 22 years of service, Troy discharged from the Army. In post-service life, Troy now works as a Safety manager for an international offshore marine company. Troy was President of the Western Australian branch of the Australian SAS Association. Currently, he is Assistant National Secretary of the SAS Association National Executive. Troy is deeply involved and passionate about the challenges and opportunities faced by veterans. We usually like to celebrate success stories with NZ Sporting History but, as we all know, when it comes to sport it's even harder to forget the times we've fallen short. 2025 marks the 25th anniversary of the 2000 Sydney Olympics. While some athletes did put on great performances at the event, it's mostly remembered for New Zealand's overall lack of success. We came back with just four medals; one gold and three bronze, our worst haul since the 1972 Munich games. Award-winning sports journalist Dylan Cleaver says this had a pretty big impact on the way we do sport in New Zealand.
We chat with Pat Welsh who joined the seven network back in 1975 as a sports journalist. We chat with Pat about his 50 years in the sports media game and some of his finest memories including interviewing Cathy Freeman after winning gold at the Sydney Olympics.
My guest today is a woman who knows better than most what it takes to adapt to life's big shifts. Dame Denise Lewis is one of the UK's best known athletes. She won gold in the heptathlon in Sydney Olympics in 2000 and bronze in Atlanta in 1996. She has won medals at the Commonwealth games, the European championships and World Championships. After retiring from athletics in her early 30s she built a successful career as a BBC sports commentator. Oh, And had four kids. In 2023 she was made a Dame for her services to sport. Now 52, she is President of UK athletics and has written a book sharing everything she's learnt, aptly named Adaptability, a guide to surviving and thriving in a world of competing demands. I met up with Denise to talk about self-reliance, independence and how growing up the only child of a single mum shaped her. The challenge of building a whole new identity in her 30s - and again in her 50s. Her secrets to adapting after a big life shift and How she learnt the vital skill of mansplaining. Plus menopause, ageing And why she loves being on the fifth floor of life. * You can buy all the books mentioned in this podcast at The Shift bookshop on Bookshop.org, including The Cancer Roadmap by Dr Liz O'Riordan and the book that inspired this podcast, The Shift: how I lost and found myself after 40 - and you can too, by me. * If you enjoyed this episode and you fancy buying me a coffee, pop over to my page on buymeacoffee.com. • And if you'd like to support the work that goes into making this podcast and get a weekly newsletter plus loads more content including exclusive transcripts of the podcast, why not join The Shift community, come and have a look around at www.theshiftwithsambaker.substack.com • The Shift (on life after 40) with Sam Baker is created and hosted by Sam Baker and edited by Juliette Nicholls at Pineapple Production. Happy International Women's Day! This episode of Sole Sisters is an ode to women runners! Alice has a lot of time to think as she bunkers down for Cyclone Alfred. She unearths the memories of two pioneer marathoners - Bobbi Gibb and Kathrine Switzer who were the first women to run the 42.2k distance in the late 60s, despite many people trying to stand in their way. Elise has done some modern-day research and found that women's marathon participation between Sydney, Melbourne and Gold Coast marathons comprised 27% on average between 2018-2023, with men making up 63% of the field. Participation was much more even in the half marathon. The pair then offer some general reflections on women's participation in marathons and the barriers that still exist that prevent or hinder women from running today. These include not having enough time to train, concerns for safety, childbirth and caring responsibilities. They also have a good chat on the role of confidence and ego in the marathon. You can read the piece Elise wrote on this “Mind the Marathon Gap” in The Blue Line last year. Alice and Elise also debrief the International Women's Day – Running Connection event organised by Love the Run last week. They rehash some of the conversation in the panel discussion about safety while running with ultra trail star Lucy Bartholomew and podiatrist/runner/coach/mum Sophie Fitt. Jess Stenson is the star of the results segment for her gutsy 2:22:56 run at Tokyo Marathon, while Izzi Batt-Doyle and Leanne Pompeani wait to line up at another Japanese race this weekend, Nagoya Marathon. Finally, here's a no-context link to a Roy and HG video commentating men's gymnastics from the Sydney Olympics. Triathlon has been a recognised sport in the UK for 42 years, with the first official event held in 1983. My guest, Steve Trew, was there at the very beginning. Steve has had an incredible career in sport, particularly in triathlon. As one of the UK's first triathlon coaches, he blended his experience as a competitive runner, triathlete, and personal trainer to help shape the sport—long before formal coaching education programmes even existed. He was also a pioneer of triathlon training camps, launching some of the earliest camps in Malta. Beyond coaching, Steve has played a key role in the sport's media coverage—announcing at the London Marathon finish line and working with the BBC at the Sydney Olympics for the very first Olympic triathlon in 2000. In today's episode, we talk about all of this and more—including his upcoming book, 8 Kids from London, which is set to be published in March. My guest today may have only spent one season at Club Med, but what a season it was! In 2000, he kicked off his Club Med journey as a Sailing and Windsurf G.O. at Club Med Lindeman Island—right amid the Sydney Olympics. A Sydney native, he earned a degree in Environmental Science from Macquarie University and even competed in the prestigious Sydney Hobart Yacht Race in 1994. Now calling San Francisco home, please join me in welcoming Doug Walker! Doug's adventures began long before his time at Club Med. His father built a 27-foot sloop in their backyard, then set sail with Doug and his family on a six-month voyage to Tonga, Fiji, and New Zealand. At just 17, Doug took on the challenge of the 50th anniversary Sydney Hobart Yacht Race, a milestone event in competitive sailing. Doug and I have shared many great memories from Lindeman Island, so if you worked there, you won't want to miss this episode! **My First Season podcast has always been ad-free and free to listen to and is available to download on: Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, Samsung Podcasts, Podbean App, Podchaser, Spotify, Amazon Music/Audible, TuneIn + Alexa, iHeartRadio, PlayerFM, Pandora and Listen Notes. We delve into The Promise, his groundbreaking documentary that not only shares his story but amplifies the voices of others impacted by mental illness and suicide. It was mid October when I invited Ray Hadley to be special guest on the occasion of our 500th podcast episode. Never once during the conversation did the legendary broadcaster so much as hint that he was contemplating calling time on his 2GB morning programme. We made arrangements to record the interview on the afternoon of Thursday November 5th. Like many of his listeners and colleagues I was stunned, when less than an hour into his programme on Thursday Ray made the shock announcement that December 13th is to be his final day in the 2GB studios. Television news crews were setting up in the building long before he finished his on air shift at midday. The broadcaster was inevitably “swamped” by media outlets for several hours. I wouldn't have been one bit surprised had he requested a postponement of our podcast interview, but I should have known better. True to his word Ray was ready to go when I called him as arranged at 4.30pm. I reminded him that nobody had seen this coming. He admitted it was a surreal experience to be announcing his own retirement from mainstream radio. I asked Ray to identify the likely reasons he was able to win 160 consecutive surveys. He nominated one particular story where his on air comments contributed to a better outcome. Ray made no secret of the fact that he won't be lost to media, but says the days of 3.30am wake up calls are over. He takes us back to childhood days as the son of hard working parents Morris and Elsie Hadley. Ray looks back on the massive impact of his father's death at just 46 years of age. He shares some funny stories from his eight years with Steers Auctions at Parramatta. He believes his experience as an auctioneer helped to develop his commentary skills. Ray says he was chuffed beyond belief in the early 80's when offered the role of Harold Park course broadcaster following the retirement of Ray Conroy. He takes us back to the days immediately after the Super League war when 2UE lost its Rugby League broadcast rights. 2UE's Continuous Call team made history when it continued to win the ratings without broadcasting the game. Ray pays a special tribute to the man they called “The Starmaker.” 2UE Programme Director the late John Brennan was lauded in the industry for his unique ability to spot potential talent from a mile off. Ray Hadley's career took a life changing turn in 2002 when John Singleton purchased 2GB. He initially poached Ray from 2UE to call Rugby League, but changed his mind soon after. The broadcaster was stunned when “Singo” asked him to take over the morning programme in opposition to 2UE's John Laws. Ray shares the full story. The multiple award winning broadcaster says he has no regrets about missing the opportunity to call 100 State Of Origins. Ray was privileged to be a member of the commentary team for seven Olympic Games. He says Cathy Freeman's unforgettable win in the 400m at the Sydney Olympics remains his fondest memory. He was agreeable to looking back on what he describes as the lowest point in his long career- the 2019 bullying allegations from a small group of staff members. He looks back with candour on a very unhappy time in his life. Ray talks with great affection of his children and grandchildren. Today he's the quintessential doting grandfather. It's a massive coincidence that Ray's retirement announcement came just a few hours before this podcast was recorded. No wonder he was in the mood to reminisce. Great to have him on our 500th podcast episode.

The youngest of nine children, Rulon Gardner was raised on a dairy farm in Wyoming, where the family grew crops and milked cows twice a day. Rulon learned about hard work and determination which became core values in Rulon's life.As Rulon shares his story, he talks about how his upbringing has helped him deal with the adversity that has come his way. He also talks about his wrestling career which most knew little about until the 2000 Olympics and his match against one of the greatest athletes to have ever wrestled.Though it doesn't get as much attention as the “Miracle on Ice” at the 1980 Winter Olympics in Upstate New York, Rulon's Olympic match against Aleksandr Karelin of Russia in Sydney Australia is an equally impressive underdog story. Aleksandr, “The Russian Bear” was 12 lbs. at birth and a terrifyingly toned 287 pounds in his wrestling prime. He had allowed just a single point to be scored against him in the previous 10 years of competition; he hadn't lost a match in 13. Yeah, we talked all about what has now become known as the Miracle on the Mat during our talk story session. But Rulon also talks about other events (which include several brushes with death) that have made him who he is today.2000 Sydney Olympic match: https://youtu.be/oVT3-wbL8HU?si=5i14CojKHNBG7k1gWebsite: Rulongardner.comBook: Never Stop Pushinghttps://a.co/d/03f7dod

Sergey Evglevsky will represent Australia at the shooting competition in Paris. Sergey is a hereditary shooter; his mother won bronze at the Sydney Olympics in 2000. Sergey told SBS Russian about how preparations for the Games are going, whether the state supports athletes, and how he first started shooting at the age of 12 and immediately realised that this was his sport. - Сергей Евглевский будет представлять Австралию на соревнованиях по стрельбе в Париже. Сергей - потомственный стрелок, его мама взяла бронзу на Олимпиаде в Сиднее в 2000 году. Abhinav Bindra and Anjali Bhagwat are the first names that come to mind when one thinks about shooting as a sport in India. In the early 2000s, Anjali dominated the sport and was the World Champion, having taken up the sport only during her NCC (National Cadet Corps). Her journey was far from beig easy. In the 2000 Sydney Olympics, Anjali reached Australia to compete but her ammunition did not get to Sydney due to bureaucratic issues. She also sheds light on why Abhinav Bindra deserved to win the gold medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympics and how shooting has changed in the last few decades. A Maple Grove man heads to Paris next month to compete in the sport of taekwondo at the Summer Olympics. Alasan Ann, 23, will represent Gambia, where his father was born and where he holds dual citizenship. It's an amazing journey, especially given that he was shot in his right thigh in the Twin Cities while out with friends just a few months before his qualifying tournament. Fortunately, the bullet did not hit bone or arteries, and he was able to heal in time to compete and win.“It was one of the scariest moments of my life,” he told MPR News. “Everything you've worked for can just be taken away. It helped me not take anything for granted.” The World Taekwondo Federation describes the sport as “one of the most systematic and scientific Korean traditional martial arts, that teaches more than physical fighting skills. It is a discipline that shows ways of enhancing our spirit and life through training our body and mind.”Ann said he first fell in love with taekwondo when he was 6 years old. He said it offered him the self-discipline that he needed.“At first I did not like at all, because you realize it was meant to focus you and no kid wants to be focused right away, but it helped me out a lot,” he said. “I made some lifelong friends, and by the time I was 10 I was in it fully.”Ann explained there are two sides of taekwondo: the traditional, and the sport. When someone first starts learning, they do the traditional and learn basic kicks. He compared the sport side to boxing where you get points for hitting. Matches are two minutes long. It became a full-medal Olympic sport in 2000 at the Sydney Olympics. He said he's excited about the food in Paris and he's looking forward to the opening ceremony. “I've always watched it as a kid, and now I'm gonna be in it,” he said. “That's going to be insane. I'm just so excited to be able to share that moment with the people who have supported me.”Use the audio player above to listen to the full conversation.Subscribe to the Minnesota Now podcast on Apple Podcasts, Spotify or wherever you get your podcasts.
