Shakespeare's Julius Caesar feels urgently contemporary in Rosa Joshi's new production at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival—one of America's largest and longest-running theater festivals, now in its 90th season. Staged in partnership with Seattle's upstart crow collective, the production explores the threat of autocracy, drawing on global histories of dictatorship. Performed entirely by women and nonbinary actors, Joshi's Julius Caesar offers new perspectives on a historically male-dominated political landscape. The result is a fresh reading of Shakespeare's classic tale of power, loyalty, and betrayal. In this episode, Joshi reflects on the production, the politics of performance, and why Shakespeare's plays continue to illuminate moments of crisis. >> Discover more about Julius Caesar at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival From the Shakespeare Unlimited podcast. Rosa Joshi (she/her) is a director, producer and educator. She currently serves as Associate Artistic Director of Oregon Shakespeare Festival. Rosa's directing work spans from Shakespeare to modern classics and contemporary plays. Throughout her career she has created work independently through self-producing, and in 2006 she co-founded upstart crow collective a company that produces classical plays with diverse casts of women and non-binary people. With upstart crow, she has directed King John, Bring Down the House, Richard III, Titus Andronicus, and Coriolanus. She is committed to creating ambitious productions of classical work featuring women, non-binary, and BIPOC artists. As Interim Artistic Director of Northwest Asian American Theatre, Rosa produced a range of Asian American performances, including: A-Fest, an international performance festival; Traces, a world premiere multi-disciplinary, multi-media, international collaborative work. She was also a Resident Director and Artistic Director of the Second Company at New City Theater, where she directed and produced various classical and contemporary plays. Famous for its grandeur and colossal size, the Uptown Theatre celebrates its 100-year anniversary. Over the last century, the Uptown has seen its highs and lows, but after being shuttered in 1981, the “palace” now needs a $190-million revamp. Robert Loerzel's new book, The Uptown: Chicago's Endangered Movie Palace, relives the glory days of the theatre through photos and archives. Many, like Loerzel, hope the Uptown Theatre will be restored to its former purpose and splendor through the help of donor and state funding. Reset hears more about the Uptown Theatre's history and future from Loerzel, Preservation Chicago executive director Ward Miller, and David Syfczak, caretaker for the Uptown Theatre for the last 30 years. For a full archive of Reset interviews, head over to wbez.org/reset.

Zephyr Brüggen is theaterregisseur.
Why did Britons get up a play wherever they went? In Strolling Players of Empire: Theater and Performances of Power in the British Imperial Provinces, 1656–1833 (Cambridge UP, 2022), Dr. Kathleen Wilson reveals how the performance of English theater and a theatricalized way of viewing the world shaped the geopolitics and culture of empire in the long eighteenth century. Ranging across the Atlantic, Indian and Pacific Oceans to encompass Kingston, Calcutta, Fort Marlborough, St. Helena and Port Jackson as well as London and provincial towns, she shows how Britons on the move transformed peripheries into historical stages where alternative collectivities were enacted, imagined and lived. Men and women of various ethnicities, classes and legal statuses produced and performed English theater in the world, helping to consolidate a national and imperial culture. The theater of empire also enabled non-British people to adapt or interpret English cultural traditions through their own performances, as Englishness also became a production of non-English peoples across the globe. This interview was conducted by Dr. Miranda Melcher whose book focuses on post-conflict military integration, understanding treaty negotiation and implementation in civil war contexts, with qualitative analysis of the Angolan and Mozambican civil wars. With a background in music, theater, and AV integration, Matt brings a unique blend of creative and technical expertise to the attractions industry. After realizing that many of his theater colleagues had moved into theme parks, he joined the industry himself and soon found that lighting design in attractions offered a dynamic canvas for storytelling. SPRK Lighting, founded in 2018, focuses on immersive and intentional lighting design for location-based entertainment venues. In this interview, Matt talks about a novel approach to lighting, theater realism, and budget vs. coordination. Novel Approach to Lighting “It was a novel approach to lighting design, specifically for attraction spaces… It was fun, it was creative, it celebrated the collaboration of a team.” Matt's entrepreneurial mindset led to the founding of SPRK Lighting with the goal of breaking the mold of the stereotypical grumpy lighting designer. Drawing from his AV integration background, he embraced the design-build model—less common in attractions—which allowed for a more seamless creative process from concept through installation. Matt believes lighting should be accessible, collaborative, and joyful, and that this approach is not only artistically fulfilling but also more cost-effective for regional attractions. By tightly integrating design and execution, SPRK eliminates the common friction between designers and integrators, maximizing value for operators, especially those with lean budgets. Theater Realism “We attempted to bring a kind of theater realism, which isn't real reality, but it's our interpretation of reality.” Using a Shanghai project as an example, Matt explained how traditional exhibit-style lighting gave way to more dramatic, theatrical techniques that brought static environments to life. Applying knowledge from live theater—such as manipulating texture, day-to-night transitions, and environmental dynamics—he and his team created lighting effects that made miniature cities appear to breathe. This philosophy elevates lighting beyond utility into a powerful storytelling tool. Whether enhancing drama in a haunted house or invoking wonder in a children's attraction, Matt emphasizes that lighting can serve as a primary medium for delivering emotional impact—when it's treated as part of the narrative, not just a technical necessity. Budget vs. Coordination “It isn't always a budgetary issue. It's often a coordination issue.” Matt argues that many lighting limitations attributed to budget are actually rooted in a lack of early collaboration. He stresses that meaningful creative integration requires upfront alignment between designers, fabricators, and operators. Too often, infrastructure like power and data is overlooked until late in a project, resulting in compromises that diminish guest impact. Instead, Matt advocates for early conversations that prioritize guest experience, ensure infrastructure supports design goals, and allow the team to find cost-effective yet compelling solutions. As he says, a great guest experience doesn't come from the most expensive lights—it comes from lights used with purpose, collaboration, and care. To learn more about SPRK Lighting, visit www.sprklighting.com or connect with Matt on LinkedIn. Whether you're designing a roller coaster or a cookie shop, he's always open to talking about lighting, bourbon, or Dippin' Dots at IAAPA. In this episode, Bart speaks with longtime THG consultant and Professor of Voice, Acting, and Performance Research at Concordia University, Noah Drew, about the deep connection between presence, performance, and leadership. Noah shares how his journey through theatre and voice work shaped his understanding of what presence really means, and why it matters for both actors and leaders. Bridging his work in theatre and leadership development, Noah introduces the Presence Triangle. He breaks down the three points of the triangle: the inner experience of the speaker, the outer awareness of the audience, and the material at hand, and explains why great communicators stay attuned to all three. Along the way, he offers practical ways to assess your own presence, strengthen it, and show up more fully and authentically in the moments that matter. Whether you're preparing for a high-stakes presentation or simply want to be more intentional in everyday interactions, this conversation will help you lead with greater clarity, connection, and presence. SEASON 2 - EPISODE 154 - Tracy Letts - Actor / Writer In this episode of the Team Deakins Podcast, we speak with actor and writer Tracy Letts (AUGUST: OSAGE COUNTY, BUG, HOMELAND). Born and raised in Oklahoma, Tracy struck out for Chicago after high school to find work as an actor in the city's active theatre scene, and we learn why Tracy began writing plays himself. We also discuss cinema's role as a messenger for exposing the stories of the stage to rural American communities without access to the theatre, and he shares his mixed experiences adapting his plays into films, from director William Friedkin's tense vision of BUG to the Hollywood ensemble version of his Pulitzer Prize winning play AUGUST: OSAGE COUNTY. An accomplished actor as well, Tracy reflects on seeking advice for performing for the camera from his seasoned HOMELAND castmates Claire Danes and Mandy Patinkin, and he reveals how he felt when, after being replaced on a film he had written, he was asked to act in additional scenes invented for his character. Plus, Tracy quotes a critical review that ironically sold out the remaining shows of his first play KILLER JOE. - This episode is sponsored by Barco & Aputure
Dylan and Connor are joined by Chiara Aurelia (John Proctor is the Villain, Dilaria). It's a cruel, theatre girlie summer, y'all! The twins are GAGGED to be joined by Chiara, who is currently making her Broadway debut as Shelby Holcomb in John Proctor is the Villain. We discuss the hit play, how she went from seeing her childhood friend Sadie Sink in the show to finding herself starring in it within a matter of months, and what goes DOWN in the cast group chat. After binging the TV series Cruel Summer all week, Connor and Dylan are eager to chat with Chiara about her experience on the show. From gaggy costars Olivia Holt, Sarah Drew, and Froy Gutierrez, to filming three timelines in one day, to the shocking twist ending, Chiara mentions it ALL. She just finished making her off-Broadway debut in Dilaria, alongside Ella Stiller and friend of the pod Christopher Briney. We also discuss Pretty Little Liars, Happy Gilmore 2, Weapons, and Hysteria. You're going to love this chat with Chiara.
