Feel like you're trying to overcome the impossible? This episode will bring you to tears, laughter, and hope. On Part 1 of this 2-part episode of The Whole You, Kevin and Steph Mason share their incredible journey of resilience and courage. Together they have faced unimaginable challenges, from surviving electrocution and battling multiple cancers to overcoming fears of infertility and birth defects. And yet While their story is nothing short of awe-inspiring and personal, it's entertaining and at times, downright hilarious. Here are **3 Key Takeaways** from their story: **Focus on the Next Step**: Life's adversities can overwhelm us, but Kevin and Steph emphasize breaking down challenges into manageable next steps. This approach helped them navigate through extreme difficulties one step at a time, that would have devastated most people and broken, not strengthened, a marriage. **Power of Positive Self-Talk**: Negative thoughts can consume us, especially during tough times. The Masons consistently replaced negative thoughts with positive affirmations and words, showing the immense power of mindset in overcoming hardships. **Resilience is Built, Not Born**: Resilience isn't about bouncing back to the old normal; it's about stepping forward and creating a new path. Kevin and Steph's story exemplifies how resilience can be cultivated through persistence, faith, and support. Their journey is a testament to the human spirit's capacity to endure and thrive, regardless of the obstacles. Episode 233 of my Curate Your Health Podcast is out! Link below. Susan Salenger is here to talk about how women need to advocate for themselves for health care. She interviewed women for a book she wrote, and she discovered that women, in many ways, put themselves last and this needs to change. Women need to put themselves first and go to the doctor when they don't feel well. She found that many people are unprepared when going to the doctor. It is advisable to write a list of all of your symptoms and medications you take. Many people get anxious at doctor visits so if you have a list, it will keep you on track. In her research, she found that a lot of women leave the appointment not understanding what the doctor was telling them and that they are embarrassed to ask questions. The more information and questions that you have, the better equipped you will be. Susan gives tips for women when the appointment doesn't go as planned. Some of these tips include: emailing the doctor for follow up information, writing down what the doctor said so you can do your own research and get a second opinion from someone with different training. Susan Salenger is the author and researcher behind SIDELINED: How Women Can Navigate A Broken Healthcare System. Sidelined examines the many ways in which some women manage and sometimes mismanage their healthcare. (Released, April 2022) Susan explores how women, typically the medical gatekeepers for their families, tend to be extremely conscientious about taking care of themselves, yet at the same time inadvertently undermine their own care. They often hesitate to call the doctor when they don't feel well and worry that their doctor visit will take time away from their families or work. They may hesitate to ask doctors the necessary questions and don't always comply with the doctor's instructions. Salenger's research reveals how conflicted many women are about the medical decisions they ultimately make. Born and raised in Los Angeles, Susan attended UCLA to study English. After graduation, she worked alongside her husband Fred for 25 years at their production company, Salenger Films, which produced corporate training and development films distributed worldwide. Today, at age 81, Susan lives in Northern California to be near her incredible family which includes her two daughters, four grandchildren, a cat named Max and a dog named JD (Salenger). When she is not speaking about her book or spending time with family and friends, you will find Susan power lifting to stay in shape. It examines the many ways in which women have been conditioned not to act in their own best interest when it comes to their health. It shines a light on the cultural history and gender bias in the medical community that have helped put women in this position. And it offers women practical advice to help them recognize these biases and better navigate the patient-doctor relationship. Episode 231 of my Curate Your Health Podcast is out! Link below. Udo Erasmus is here to talk about total health. He first started looking into healthy oils, digestion, and the importance of eating greens. However, he discovered that everything affects health, and in that insight, he started to look at all components of human nature. He says that if you want optimum health, there are eight parts. The first part is internal awareness, this is a stillness practice in a safe place. When you can deeply, quietly and gently breathe, you will notice a calmness, contentment there. He then discusses the other elements of health, which are: peace and a flow of love, the shine of the love in the world, a positive mind, the body, a protective mind, your social group, and the natural environment. If you want total health, you need to be aware and nurture all eight. The legendary Udo Erasmus is the co-founder of Udo's Choice line, which can be found in Whole Foods and other health food stores worldwide. Udo designed the machinery for making oils with health in mind and pioneered flax oil, a billion dollar industry. However, Udo walked a difficult path to become the man he is today. Being a child of war, Udo's life began with intense struggle. As an adult, he got pesticide poisoning in 1980, leaving doctors at a loss regarding treatment. Deciding to take his health into his own hands, Udo began researching, and his discoveries led him to a passion for finding the answers to life's big questions which would hopefully one day bring him and the world peace. Today, Udo is an acclaimed speaker and author of many books, including the best-selling Fats That Heal Fats That Kill, which has sold over 250,000 copies. He teaches at events hosted by Tony Robbins and Deepak Chopra, has keynoted an international brain health conference, and has traveled to over 30 countries to conduct thousands of live presentations, media interviews, and staff trainings impacting more than 25,000,000 lives with his message on oils, health, peace, nature, and human nature. Episode 230 of my Curate Your Health Podcast is out! Link below. Udo Erasmus is here to talk about healthy oils. He describes our bodies as a major construction site. Some people say 98% of the time, the atoms in our bodies turn over and are removed and replaced every year. Our bodies need essential nutrients to be healthy. If you are not getting enough, your health will deteriorate, but you can reverse this. You need to be conscious of what you are bringing into your body. He became very interested in learning about how oils are made and discovered that the processing of oils was damaging the nutrients. He discusses how Omega 3 and Omega 6 are both essential to your body, but if you are getting one more than the other, it can be damaging, and you need a better ratio. If you have the right nutrients, your energy and skin will be better. He created oils with health in mind and with the right ratio of Omegas. It is so easy to get caught up in our thoughts. She focuses on where these women are lacking or overdoing something, and she tries to help them find one thing they can do for themselves to get to a balanced state. It is important to feel all emotions and allow them to be there, and not push them away. When we don't process these emotions, it can cause unease. Processing can be done through many different avenues, such as: gardening, movement, talking, and drawing. We need to be fully aware and find what nourishes us. By making tiny changes in our lives, it can affect how we show up. Tess Jewell-Larsen empowers women professionals, entrepreneurs and juggling-it-all'ers to go from exhausted and overwhelmed to balanced and thriving. Episode 223 of my Curate Your Health Podcast is out! Link below. Adele Spraggon is here to ask our listeners if your patterns of behavior are continuously getting in the way and stopping you from getting the things you want most in your life? She says forget commitment, willpower, positive-thinking, mindset techniques, or better goal-setting. These approaches are a thing of the past. We were told to use our mind to fix our problems, but this is simply not the case. Current brain research proves that you are not in control of your choices. Instead, your decisions are the result of decision-making patterns that were created early in life and that continue to control your life. To take different actions, you need to change your patterns. That means no blame in your past, no shame in your future, and nothing to fix in your present. There are only patterns and patterns can be changed. She wrote an award-winning book that provides the necessary knowledge and step-by-step instructions to change any of your behaviors, actions, or beliefs – permanently – in less than six weeks. Adele Spraggon is an award-winning author, thought leader, international trainer and a fearless speaker. She suggests slowing your breath, meditation, taking a bath, listening to music, or journaling for better sleep. One practice that she discusses is using your five senses. Episode 216 of my Curate Your Health Podcast is out! Link below. Laurie Lewis is here today to discuss intermittent fasting. She is a certified coach who shares her personal story and clarifies many misunderstandings about intermittent fasting. She explains the first mistake is that people think it is a diet. It is a timing, an eating window, that is not for weight loss. By tuning into your personal goals and what feels good to you, you will discover what are your ideal fasting hours. She discusses how it is easier to make good food choices when in a fasted state. The best way to start is to decide when to close your eating window. By shrinking your eating window, you will start to look at the foods that make you feel good. Your body will start to use its own body fat for energy and will keep your Insulin low. Your body will learn to eat “window worthy” nutritious food and how much to eat and when to stop eating. Certified coach, Laurie Lewis, has changed the lives of thousands through her coaching of Intermittent Fasting. Utilizing time-tested (and science-tested) principles, Laurie takes on individual clients as well as leading her group programs Live on Zoom. She helps determined, exasperated, busy people (who are tired of dieting!) from the United States to New Zealand to Ghana to Israel to Scotland. Combining a 22-year personal study of nutrition (Health Coach Certification from the Institute for Integrative Nutrition) with her research and practice of Intermittent Fasting, Laurie supports clients and participants with a dream come true. Yes, it is possible to eat the foods you love and live your life feeling strong, vibrant, and lean! Menopause and stubborn hormonal fat hit Laurie hard in 2012, causing her to suddenly gain 50 pounds. For years, she tried everything and none of the old tricks worked. She hit rock-bottom and almost resigned to the “fact” that she would keep getting heavier and feeling worse and worse forever. At a particularly despondent time in 2017, a video unexpectedly popped up which would turn the course of her life. She stayed up all night learning about Intermittent Fasting, and started that very next morning. Within days of eating in this newfound pattern of time, the fog lifted and she felt awake and “like herself.” With health, strength, and slender weight restored – 50+ pounds lost. Now, at 59-years old, Laurie has turned her personal success into the premier thriving Intermittent Fasting coaching business. As a certified health coach (Institute for Integrative Nutrition) she combines her knowledge of nutrition with deep research and practice of Time Restricted Eating. Laurie guides her clients with a dream come true -- eat the foods you love and enjoy the rest of your life feeling vibrantly well. So he created a company that would develop neurochemicals in different ratios and combinations so that people could think better, make better decisions and perform better. Mark Effinger, also known as Mr. Noots, has had a lifelong passion for neuroscience. Tragedy struck when he faced a health crisis and lost his wife to a painkiller overdose. Episode 213 of my Curate Your Health Podcast is out! Link below. Dr. Lulu is here today to discuss gender identity. She identifies this as your true sense of self, how you see yourself, something, no one else can tell you. She stresses the importance of respecting someone's gender identity. She is a pediatrician and talks about how to be the patient's advocate and how to really listen to what they are saying. It is imperative that children have at least one trusted adult. She coaches parents who are triggering kids, parents who are not affirming; and home needs to be a safe place. We don't have to understand, we just need to know. Pediatricians and parents need to ask open ended questions, use pronouns, and affirm who they are. Dr. Lulu is a Queer, Nigerian-born pediatrician, educator, parent coach, and CEO of Dr. Lulu's Life Coaching Lounge. She is the mother of a transgender young adult and works to educate families, healthcare providers and non-medical organizations on accepting, affirming and supporting their LGBTQ+ children/patients/employees. Everywhere I turn, another person is diagnosed with ADHD. And they always say, “Everything makes so much sense now.” They finally have a reason why they struggle with: Can't deal with stress Impatience Impulsivity Easily bored Can't sit still Negative self image Lack of motivation Sleep issues Procrastination carelessness and not enough attention to detail starting new tasks before finishing old ones Emotional reactions Disorganized Distracted Can't focus Losing or misplacing things Forgetfulness Restlessness Talking too much Blurting out responses and interrupting others Mood swings Irritability But what does the diagnosis actually give you? Does it teach you how to live your life better? Does the amphetamine prescription get rid of the problem? NOPE. Dr. Gabor Mate believes that ADHD is caused in infancy by a stressful environment. It can happen when the caregivers experience financial, political, or emotional stress. And a sensitive infant picks up on that stress. Because the child can not escape, they'll “check out” or dissociate. It's a coping mechanism to escape the stress. Once this strategy is learned, it becomes the go-to strategy for dealing with stress and feeling uncomfortable. But what if you could make your ADHD work for you instead of against you? What if you could change your brain? And create new, healthier coping mechanisms for stress? Don't you deserve that? This is exactly what Adult Therapist and AD/HD "Hypeman," Kate von Achen, is determined to do–for herself and others. Join us for a conversation on diagnosis, misdiagnosis, and making ADHD work for you. Don't be a person who lets a diagnosis determine the fate of your happiness. Some of the most successful and happy people have “diagnoses.” The key to a fulfilling career is to find the one that fits the WHOLE YOU. Kate's journey into this line of work was anything but linear and makes perfect sense to those who have followed her at times chaotic journey. Overcoming (at times “self-created”) obstacles, running toward the flames while others run for safety, and being passionate about being of service to others has been the golden thread connecting the various hats worn internationally throughout her life. Finding out she is AD/HD at 42 and learning what that actually means has made her “at times chaotic journey” make perfect sense and has added tremendous value to her long “life experience list” she calls on in working in a community mental health setting.
Episode 212 of my Curate Your Health Podcast is out! Link below. David Greenwalt is here today to discuss how he helps people learn the truth about mental fitness, nutrition and movement. Obesity is at its highest level ever, with about 40 percent of U.S. adults considered obese. The cause of obesity, he believes, can be broken down into four drivers. One: biological drives, we are driven to calorie dense foods to avoid food scarcity that evolution has built in us. Two: habit condition automatic responses, we use food to change our mental state so that we feel relief, checked out and relaxed. Three: addiction to ultra-processed food. And the fourth driver is our obese genetic environment. These are all external forces that promote obesity: fast food restaurants, proximity, convenience marts, access, opportunity for less activities, parental modeling, marketing, and government subsidies. By becoming more aware of these factors, we can learn to implement strategies to have a different response. Sometimes we need someone else to help us become aware of our subconscious behaviors. If we are aware and are able to catch the behavior as soon as it happens, we can begin to lay down a new healthier path. When you have the support and education, real strategies can win against the external factors and be able to put behaviors in place to lose the weight for the last time. With us today is Certified Wellness Coach, fitness expert, and author David Greenwalt. A husband, father, former police officer, gym owner, competitive state-level bodybuilder, and powerlifter. In 1997, at age 32 and a body weight of 235 pounds, David discovered an evidence-based approach for getting off his own 50 excess pounds and keeping it off for 25 years and counting. Since 1999, through his company Leanness Lifestyle University, David has been helping student members, from every walk of life, get the truth, and strategies, to lose excess fat one more time for the last time. She discovered by figuring out what foods worked for her, she was able to balance her emotions better and think straight. By being more thoughtful and mindful with the way food made her feel, she was able to heal her gut health. She mentions that by paying attention to what her body needed, she was able to feel better, and what helps one person, may not help another. Hally Brooke is the Founder & CEO of Live Nourished, she is a Certified Functional Medicine Nutrition Counselor, Nationally Board Certified Health & Wellness Coach, Fox 21 Fitness & Nutrition Expert, and a fierce industry advocate. Dr. Hammerstedt is joined today by Tina Koopersmith MD who gives a beautiful overview of who we are through our brain and our body. She discusses how our heart energy can be felt six feet away and if we have a positive energy field, people can feel it. Likewise, if you are in a negative environment, the heart rate is lower, and you can feel the negative energy. She talks about healing techniques that can heal the body. We are connected between our brain and our heart. And, by using techniques that play with your emotions and thoughts, you can gently move your emotions into a peaceful state. Tina Koopersmith MD is a physician AND coach, a mom and a perpetual student. She is dedicated to modifying our health care system from one focused on illness and sickness to one devoted to prevention and wellness. For 30 years as a fertility specialist, she focused on bringing life to her patients and now she wants to focus on bringing her patients (and other humans) to life. She starts with the premise we all have the same parts and very similar DNA, and yet we all have different experiences and imprinting. Our unique signature means we are all wired to access pleasure in a slightly different fashion. Diversity is to be praised and celebrated. We need to nourish all 4 of our bodies: the mind body, the heart body, the physical body and the energetic body because we are ALL worthy of self-care, self-acceptance and self-love. Dr. Hammerstedt is joined today by Dr. Stella K. Evans, MD to discuss complex care for children with disabilities and their caregivers. She talks about how she is the prime contact for the caregivers, and she helps navigate the best care through their health team. There are a few roadblocks that she wants parents to know about. She stresses that this is not the parent's fault and sticking with regret, fear and guilt will not move them forward to plan for the future. Also, it is alright to ask for help to find the best care for your children. And finally, always get another opinion if you don't feel like you are getting the care your child deserves. Dr. Evans is a pediatrician in the Twin Cities of Minnesota with a long career in (and personal history with) care of the complex patient, especially in the family setting. She is a life coach, neurolinguistic programming trainer, and clinical Ericksonian hypnotist, and she works with parents of children and youth with special health care needs to build their resilience and mental health. Sean Lake grew up in Winchester, Massachusetts, before moving to Utah to become a professional snowboarder and general ski bum. Once he got that out of his system, he graduated from the University of Utah, using that degree to join Burton Snowboards, work as Shaun White's Team Manager, and land a spot as the Director of Sports Marketing at DC Shoes. After decades in action sports marketing, Sean co-founded BUBS Naturals, a line of collagen peptides and other all-natural supplements that help athletes at all levels perform and feel their best. Sean named BUBS Naturals after his childhood best friend Glen “BUB” Doherty, a Navy SEAL who was killed in Benghazi, Libya on 9/11 in 2012. In addition to remembering Glen for the patriot he is, the BUBS ethos centers around the passionate and adventure-seeking life that Glen lived. Sean and the BUBS Naturals family further honor “Bub” by donating 10% of all profits to charities that support veterans. A devoted husband, father, and fitness fanatic, Sean now lives in Encinitas, California, where he can ride his bike to work and still do a quick surf check from the office. You can find him at www.bubsnaturals.com, @bubsnaturals and @slakeo. He thinks mushrooms have been overlooked in the United States. He shares information about how supplementing mushrooms into our diets will stimulate our immune system. He hopes that by further educating people about the health benefits, it will inspire people to incorporate all of the various mushrooms into our diets. Jeff Chilton studied Ethno-mycology at the University of Washington in the late sixties and in 1973 began a 10 year career as a large scale commercial mushroom grower. Jeff is the co-author of The Mushroom Cultivator, published in 1983. In 1989 Jeff established Nammex, the first company to supply medicinal mushroom extracts to the Nutritional Supplement industry. In 1997 he organized the first organic certification workshop for mushroom production in China. Jeff is a founding member of the World Society for Mushroom Biology and Mushroom Products in 1994 and a Member of the International Society for Mushroom Science. Rachel Freiman is here today to discuss how to become MindStrong. Her aim is to educate women and to cut through all the conflicting information. She talks about stepping back, wiping the slate clean and starting to approach health and fitness as a life skill. It is important to understand what diets you tried, why it didn't work, be able to release the past, and start with a new skill base. It is basic human nature for our brain to fight back against change. It is all about baby steps and momentum. We are pleasure seekers, however, when we take baby steps and mentally celebrate it, all the feel good chemicals will be released and our brain will say that it feels good. This will begin to snowball and our brain will say let's do that again and what else can I do? Weight loss journey is full of ups and downs, when we can focus on the steps along the way, we don't have to worry about the end point. There is a three step process to building habits. Accountability is the first step which should not be seen as a weakness, it is what you need. Next, you form a habit through consistency. And finally there is a neuro connection as you repeat actions, this will become a habit. Rachel Freiman is the CEO of MindStrong Fitness, www.MindStrongFitness.com, a lover of lifting heavy things up and down, and a coach passionate about helping others unleash their strongest, most empowered selves through education and mindset training. Rachel has more than fifteen years of classroom instruction and certifications in personal training, sports nutrition, and behavior modification. She is the author of the bestselling book Becoming MindStrong: The Truth About Health, Fitness, and the Bullsh*t That's Holding You Back. Available on Amazon or Audible Rachel developed MindStrong Fitness with an inside-out approach, to focus on both physical and mental attributes in building healthy, sustainable habits. When she's not in the gym, Rachel enjoys exploring the world, snuggling with her puppy, Charlie, eating, and thinking about the next time she'll be eating.
