Nobody Asked Us with Des & Kara
2.9. The Never Underestimate Women Episode

Nobody Asked Us with Des & Kara

"This race is too hard for women. They are simply not tough enough to do it, and I get to say that for as long as it takes until someone proves me wrong." - Lazarus Lake, Race Director for the Barkley Marathons. Enter Jasmin Paris. Sorry Lazarus. But first, Des and Kara kick things off with their usual banter talking about solving the world's problems on a run, and perhaps relatedly or unrelatedly, Des's final prep for Boston, including her typical taper routine. Is Des a barely-taper or extreme-taper type of athlete, and has she ever gotten lost on a Boston Marathon course preview run? They also discuss their routines for picking running routes. Which of Des or Kara is the psycho who runs the same route every day?!? A serial killer trait to be sure... Then digging into recent events, you get their hottest takes on the results from World XC, the Barkley Marathons, and the NCAA Women's Basketball tournament, where the women are setting viewing records left and right. As a bonus, you learn the backstory of how Kara just missed her chance to be a late '90s version of Caitlin Clark. So, so close. Finally, the episode ends with a new segment sponsored by Oiselle where Des and Kara each give their "Underbird" underdog of the week performance. And if you are still underestimating women after this episode, then you can go for a cold, cold swim in a Lake. Don't forget to check out these three opportunities mentioned in the episode: Use code NOBODY10 for 10% off at oiselle.com for some amazing running apparel from Kara's sponsor! 200th Episode Celebration! 5 Ways Our Approach Has Changed, Strength Work Evolution, Post-Race Recovery, and World XC!

It's the 200th episode, and we brought so much gratitude to the party! The main topic was reflecting on 5 ways our approach to endurance training/coaching has changed, based on new research and real-world experience. The topics buffet is packed with goodness: extreme-carb fueling during hard efforts, heavier strength work (in moderation), less need for high mileage (but more cross-training), increased steady running, and more double workouts/big threshold sessions. Even more important than the exact changes is the "why" that motivates them, combining research and theory, mixed with a heaping helping of feedback from listeners. It's so much fun to learn from some of the smartest people in endurance sports! And this episode wouldn't be a true celebration unless we filled it up with tons of topics. Other topics: how to improve post-race recovery, why the time after big efforts is a major opportunity for growth (or regression), Allie Ostrander's inspiring journey, the World Cross-Country Championships, giving notice to the achievements of others, how 200 episodes of the podcast has given us more courage, road shoes in trail races, the return of Adam Peterman, a new review study on caffeine, why character matters, why progressive overload is overrated, a listener question on leaving your job, and hot takes. Thank you for your love and support over the 200 episodes. Let's do 200 more! HUZZAH! We are excited to kick off the podcast in 2021 with one of the greatest American distance runners of all time - Shalane Flanagan. From the roads to the track to the grass and mud of a cross-country course, her resumé of accomplishments pretty much has it all: 3-time NCAA champion, 4-time Olympian, Olympic silver medalist, 18-time US champion, World XC bronze, NYC Marathon champion, and former American record holder for all distances from 3K, 5K, 10K and 15K.  Even with this amazing list of accolades, we may never know Shalane's true accomplishments because many of her major races were affected in some way by drug cheats.  In this episode, Kara and Chris ask Shalane about it all. We discuss her childhood growing up as the daughter of two elite distance runners, living in Colorado and then Massachusetts, where her parents emphasized surrounding yourself with the right people.  She shares when her Olympic aspirations began and the gory details of getting food poisoning in China before bouncing back to earn Olympic bronze (which was later upgraded to silver). She talks about that medal upgrade and the impact of drug cheats on many of her major races including the Boston Marathon in 2014. Finally, she tells us about the true meaning behind the "f-yeah" moment at the finish line of her NYC Marathon victory and then how she now approaches clean sport as a coach with her athletes at the Bowerman Track Club. Shalane is an amazing ambassador for #cleansport, and we can't think of a better way to kick off our podcasts as we head into this Olympic year!

New Brunswick native Geneviève Lalonde threw her arms up in triumph as she crossed the finish line at the Canadian Cross-Country Championships last weekend. Better known for her exploits on the track--she is an Olympic finalist and has lowered her own Canadian 3000m steeplechase record 3 times--Gen entered the race as somewhat of an underdog. After a 5 year hiatus from cross-country racing and an "emotional breakdown" following her 2018 track season, Gen wasn't a likely favourite for the win. But that didn't stop her from dominating the senior women's 10km and securing her spot on the 2019 World XC team. In this episode we chat with Gen about balancing a professional athletic career with non-running passions. We dissect her National Championship win, discuss the importance of mental training, and relive getting gritty in the Arctic circle.
