Turning Food Waste Into Energy On the Farm

American Family Farmer

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 12, 2025 36:29

Wednesday, March 12 -  Host and American Family Farmer, Doug Stephan www.eastleighfarm.com shares the news affecting small farmers in America, including a focus on the new administration, including Brooke Rollins, the diversity in new farmers and why it's difficult to become a 1st generation farmer in today's society, discussions in Congress of a new Farm Bill, the continuously rising cost of eggs, and the new news on cattle markets with prices going up. Next, Doug introduces us to Brett Reinford of Reinford Farms, located in the rolling hills of central Pennsylvania (ReinfordFarms.com). Dairy farming has been the livelihood of Reinford Farms for several generations, but then they stumbled upon the idea of recycling food waste in an effort to be more sustainable and turn it into energy. It started with turning the cow manure on the farm into energy, and then they made an investment in an anaerobic digester where they provide a sustainable solution to the massive food waste problem in our country. Lastly, Farmer Doug opines what farmers could be doing on their own farms (and what he could be doing on his own farm) to make the farm more viable, more accessible and top-of-mind for members of the community. What added value can you incorporate into your business model on your farm? Website: AmericanFamilyFarmerShow.com Social Media: @GoodDayNetworks

Today's episode is the latest in a series of podcasts that are all about highlighting the technology companies that are part of AdvantageGo's ecosystem. And this one is really special because it involves the boss of one of the ecosystem's most essential core partners. Aidan O'Neill is the CEO of DOCOsoft, which is the firm on whose systems around half of the London Market's claims are handled. Aidan has been involved with the London Market for around 25 years and since the advent of the electronic claims file in 2008 DOCOsoft has built a leading market position around claims software. Aidan and Ian are both people who anyone who has been part of the London Market community is likely to know or have met at least once. And because of that in many ways this podcast is a personal embodiment of the ecosystem that Ian and AdvantageGo are trying to build – and this itself is a reflection of the wider ecosystem of collaborating and competing entities that make up the broader London Market that it serves. Ian and Aidan have been collaborating for many years and get on extremely well. So in this fun episode we get an overview of DOCOsoft and all the latest news on the ecosystem, but we also get the benefit of all of Ian and Aidan's collective wisdom looking beyond the upcoming reforms of Blueprint 2 and into a world of straight-through processing and a market where the true benefits of new technologies such as AI are going to be reaped. Greater productivity, better client service and outcomes and a much stronger flow of business into London are some of the prizes that Ian and Aidan can see just over the horizon. It's inspiring stuff and the next half an hour is going to rattle by. LINKS  https://www.advantagego.com https://docosoft.com/

Hey everybody! In a special episode that I've been teasing for a bit, Jon and I unpack the art and science of pricing for agencies and recruiters. Even if you're not from an agency, you'll want to hear this. We cover how to show your worth, focus on what really matters, and get recognized by your clients/hiring managers. This is gold whether you're on the inside or with an agency. So, why Jon specifically? Well, he's probably the best expert on the topic of pricing + recruiting. After 8 years at REED (a top UK agency pulling in £1.2 billion a year), and setting up pricing strategies, he started his own company, The Value Advantage, to help recruiting firms nail their pricing. He's also behind the great Substack newsletter Added Value where he shares tips, landing page analysis etc. - I would recommend everyone to subscribe now. By the way - I said in the episode that it was paid, but there's also a free tier. So subscribe :) Honestly, this is one of my top episodes ever. I'll keep recommending it for many years! Here's what we discussed: 1/ Why we struggle with pricing innovation and a few models we can useWe went far beyond the typical dialogue around percentages and guarantee periods (though we talked about them). Jon shared the "Good, Better, Best" way to think about pricing. This means giving clients choices that fit what they need. It makes clients happier and makes sure you get paid right for what you do. Easier said than done, so we then discussed very practical way to implement this strategy. 2/ How we should think about Value Beyond Fees Our chat went beyond just how much to charge, and tried to answer the billion dollar questions: how to communicate the value recruiters bring to the table? Jon shared a few quotes for famous entrepreneurs, and techniques to better show the value created. 3/ Practical TakeawaysFrom understanding what clients truly value to adjusting service offerings accordingly, Jon shared a lot of actionable insights on how recruiters can differentiate their services and justify their fees & salaries. What do you think? Been thinking about how to show your value or set the right prices? I'd love to hear how you're applying these ideas. Just hit reply and let's talk!Wishing you a very valuable week,Robin Choy This is a public episode. Her insights are not only profound but also showcase the transformative power of DL in modern education. The episode is not just an interview but a treasure trove of information and inspiration for educators and content providers engaged in live virtual learning. Mary's story is a testament to the potential of DL in addressing current educational challenges, such as the teacher shortage, through innovative solutions like the hybrid logistics project. This project exemplifies a new, hybrid model of education where active learning and great teaching converge. Moreover, Mary's emphasis on teaching students how to find and discern information, rather than just imparting knowledge, highlights a significant shift in educational paradigms. ---Guest Bio:Mary Schlegelmilch joined Cisco's Education team in 2011.  With her extensive knowledge in distance, blended and online learning, Mary is dedicated to education and implementing technology in today's education environments.  Hybrid teaching and learning and enabling the student experience is a main focus as we re-imagine education campuses and learning models. She has worked in both rural and urban schools as an early childhood educator, and elementary teacher and a middle school science teacher. After a few jobs and a few different industries, her love of personal finance brought her to her first job in financial planning. She worked for a couple of different firms, including an online startup RIA, and learned as much as she could about doing financial planning and the types of clients she wanted to work with before ultimately launching her own firm in September of 2021. Jessica has two niches listed on her website's home page: tech workers and online sex workers. We talked about the decision to have two niches, which she admits can be difficult at times, but also wouldn't go back and change it if she could. We dove into the service model and fee structure of both niche markets and how she's ultimately bringing value to her clients, including how she has incorporated tax preparation and tax planning into her business just over a year in, and she's doing amazingly well. How can you create added value to your farm using your skills and interests? Today on the show we're hosting John Barker, Director of Agriculture and co-owner of Forts Ferry Farm, located in Latham, New York. Forts Ferry Farm is a collective of innovators, farmers, and food lovers. Their farm is a year-round hive of activity that is continuously expanding and evolving—a living component of the region's unique climate and rich soils. Their seasonally-focused, hyper farm-to-table kitchen crafts flavor from the ground up.  John has been running the farm operations here ever since their very humble beginning in 2015. Join us to hear about the operations behind Forts Ferry and what it's like to farm in New York!   You'll hear: What Forts Ferry Farm produces 2:14 The climate/growing conditions in Latham, NY 3:14 How Forts Ferry goes about marketing 6:53 What the soil is like on the farm 16:46 John's favorite peppers to grow 19:58 How Forts Ferry uses photography for marketing 26:55 How Forts Ferry offers their prepared foods 30:26 How they built a great team 32:31 What it was like to start the farm 38:37 Types of fertilizer they use on the farm 45:57   About the Guest:  At Forts Ferry Farm, John spearheads the leadership and strategic planning of the agriculture department. During the week, you can find him helping the field team with planting, weeding, and harvests, selling fresh produce at the local farmers' market or coordinating and facilitating educational opportunities for youths in the community through tours, demonstrations, and workshops. John has been working on his family's farm from a young age and also as a professional chef for much of his adult life, which gives him a unique perspective on how to grow and prepare food. Having worked on his family's 1,500-plus-acre commodity crop farm, John brought his technical know-how to the business since its inception, and has since been in charge of administering all tractor-related tasks and maintaining all of the farm tools and equipment. His daily responsibilities also include livestock care, from feeding and caring for the cattle, to collecting and washing eggs laid by their heritage hens. As a Culinary Institute of America alumnus with 15 years of experience working as a professional chef prior to starting the farm, John believes that patience and simple techniques are key when preparing food with fresh, quality ingredients.   Resources: Website: https://www.fortsferryfarm.com/  Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/fortsferryfarm/  Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/fortsferryfarm/    The Thriving Farmer Podcast Team would like to thank our amazing sponsor! My initial plan was to release three episodes per week, for twelve weeks, and then reflect on my experience to reevaluate whether or not I want to continue beyond the 36th episode. So far, I can't see myself stopping after 36. But I do see myself pausing after 12. Here's why.***Join the Thanks For Thinking Podcast Community on DiscordIntro music: “Gingerly” (instrumental) by Surname.
