Greg and Ed discuss a few of the many ‘cringe' moments they have experienced over the years in failing to fit into Thai culture or  ‘do the right thing' according to Thai society.  Ed begins with the ‘classics,' mistakes that probably most expats make, such as wai-ing a person younger than you are, accidentally pointing the bottom of your feet towards a statue of the Buddha, and improperly touching a Thai person's head.  Greg follows with a more specific (and hilarious) story of buying a large cereal bowl only to have his Thai girlfriend reveal it to be a bowl intended to hold toilet water. Yuk!  Ed then mentions a case of Thai language stubbornness where he insisted he like to eat ‘fireflies' (‘hing-hoy' in Thai) because of its similarity to the Thai word for clams (‘hoy' but a different tone). Rule #1: Never argue with a Thai person about Thai language! Next, Greg recounts an embarrassing moment from a play he participated in during his brief career as a school teacher, where he kissed a fellow teacher (a Thai woman) on the cheek.  Rule #2: Don't surprise a Thai woman who is not your wife or girlfriend with a kiss in public!  Ed's last story is more of a confession: for many years, he had a very difficult time telling his students apart and remembering their names, leading to some epic faux-pas. Greg concludes with a story about a confusing interaction with a homeless guy who Greg blew off even though he was trying to direct Greg to stand up because the Royal Motorcade was passing. Ouch!  Don't forget that Patrons get the ad-free version of the show as well as swag and other perks. How to Develop the Unparalleled Levels of Love & Compassion of the Bodhisattva (Part 1 of 3 teaching)

    Become Your Own Therapist

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 15, 2025 81:03

All sentient beings are caught in the trap of suffering in the realms of existence. Bodhichitta is a mind that wishes to free beings from suffering and bring them to the state of enlightenment. A bodhisattva is a person who has that bodhichitta mind, is a practitioner of the enlightenment thought which is the aspiration to achieve complete enlightenment as a perfect Buddha for the benefit of oneself and all other sentient beings. Love and compassion are the forces that motivate all activities of Bodhisattvas. Love is a strong wish that aspires to attain happiness for all sentient beings and compassion is the state of mind that wishes each being to be freed from all sufferings or sorrows, great compassion is the root wisdom. These next three weeks we're going to be talking about compassion. We've got the wisdom wing and the compassion wing. It's a wonderful analogy, it works brilliantly, it covers all the Buddha's teachings, and it's also very personal. The point of the entire path is to become this Buddha. So what is a Buddha? Buddha is a person who has completely rid their mind of all the rubbish, all the fears, all the dramas, all the suffering, which we all have got so much of. And they've only got what's left, which is this incredible wisdom, clarity, power, confidence, compassion and empathy. The Buddha's whole point, from the big picture point of view, is that's the nature, the potential of every one of us. It's quite an outrageous idea really! It sounds mystical. But this is one of the things that can really help us when we're having problems and dramas, when we're overwhelmed by the negativity, just to try and remember that we've got this marvellous potential. This negativity is true, it's right now, but it's not intrinsic to us. This is something that can be very powerful for our mind. The compassion wing, of this bird that needs two wings, is this enormous empathy with others, this connection with others, the seeing of others suffering, and this wish that they be happy which is love, and the wish they don't suffer and that's compassion. But that's contingent upon the wisdom wing. If you're overwhelmed by your own pain and suffering, you can't think of anybody else. It's not possible, your own suffering is so enormous. This is why we should have compassion for ourselves for a start. But certainly have compassion for others. It's obvious that to prepare yourself to be able to benefit others, you've got to know how to benefit yourself. It's really logical. We have enormously big hearts, we think what can I do to help, but we don't actually have methods to know that first I've got to put myself together. If you want to help other people with their problems, you can have incredible compassion for them, but what good is that compassion if you don't know how to help them. That's the wisdom wing. If you want to help other people with their problems, you've got to know your own. You've got to help yourself first, and that qualifies you to then help others. That's the logic of the whole path. So what's this wisdom? Learning about your own mind, and the way your mind works, the way the delusions work, the way we create karma. This qualifies us to help put ourselves together, then it qualifies us to go - oh my god, look at all this, everybody is in the same boat. We're all suffering. Questions include - how can we know that everybody wants to be happy, understanding that others want to be happy but some people don't deserve to be happy, is pity a low form of compassion or is it a sophisticated way of self cherishing, how to deal with bullying, how to transform aggression towards ourself and others into compassion, how can we overcome feeling overwhelmed by seeing all the suffering around, and only with shamatha and vipasana meditation can we find answers to all the questions? This episode is a gentle return to something simple, sacred, and too often forgotten: the present moment. The only moment we ever truly have.  We explore what it means to really be present. True calm arises when we're not lost in yesterday's story or tomorrow's worries but rest in the stillness of the now. JoAnn Fox, a Buddhist teacher of over twenty years, will talk about why presence is the ground of peace, the birthplace of connection, and the secret doorway to joy. Let's take a breath and be here now. They do not grieve over the past, Nor do they yearn for the future; They live only in the present — That is why their face is so calm.   It's from yearning for the future, And from grieving over the past; This is how fools become withered Like a fresh reed that's been hacked down. –Buddha, from the Arañña Sutta (A Face So Calm)   Resources Buddha, translated by Andrew Olendzki, 2006. AN 9.36 The ending of defilements happens due to the practice of absorption meditation. AN 9.37 Ānanda exclaims how amazing it is that the Buddha has found a way to freedom while still experiencing the world. Questioned by the monk Udāyī, Ānanda recounts a discussion on advanced meditation with the nun Jaṭilagāhiyā. AN 9.38 Two brahmin cosmologists ask the Buddha to decide between competing claims as to whether the cosmos is infinite. Rejecting metaphysical claims, the Buddha says that there is no end of the world that can be reached by traveling; but without reaching the end of the world you can't be free of suffering. Lama Zopa Rinpoche explains how the tea offering to the eight groups of worldly devas can help stop natural disasters, such as extreme weather events. He recalls a time when he was at the Taipei Center in Taiwan during a typhoon. As the wind was pummeling the windows, he asked a geshe to do the tea offering. As soon as the offering was done, the wind stopped. Rinpoche adds that if the person is living in more pure morality, it has more power. Rinpoche advises to do the tea offering before building a house, starting a project, or travelling.Rinpoche continues bestowing the oral transmission of The Confession of Downfalls to the Thirty-Five Buddhas, beginning with Infinite Splendor. He outlines how each Buddha purifies negative karma.Rinpoche says that reciting the names of the thirty-five Buddhas purifies negative karma because in the past, when they were bodhisattvas, they made strong prayers to benefit us. In the same way, Rinpoche advises that we should pray that we will be able to help sentient beings in the future when we become enlightened. He says we should follow the example of the Medicine Buddha and the thirty-five Buddhas. From April 10 to May 10, 2004, Lama Zopa Rinpoche gave extensive teachings during the Mahamudra Retreat at Buddha House in Australia. While the retreat focused on Mahamudra, Rinpoche also taught on a wide range of Lamrim topics. This retreat marked the beginning of a series of month-long retreats in Australia. Subsequent retreats were held in 2011, 2014, and 2018, hosted by the Great Stupa of Universal Compassion in Bendigo.Find out more about Lama Zopa Rinpoche, his teachings and projects at https://fpmt.org/

Bhante Sathi explores the Buddha's teachings on the shadow self, explaining that rather than labeling parts of ourselves as “dark” or separate, we should mindfully recognize and transform unwholesome qualities like greed, anger, and self-centeredness through wisdom and compassion. He discusses Mara, the internal force of delusion and self-attachment, illustrating how enlightenment arises from overcoming these inner obstacles with mindful awareness. Ultimately, Bhante emphasizes that true growth comes from shining the light of wisdom on our imperfections, cultivating wholesome qualities such as generosity, patience, and loving-kindness to dissolve the shadows within.

Ajahn Dhammasiha recently spent at few days in Bodh Gaya, India, to visit and mediate at the Mahabodhi Temple. This is the very spot where the Buddha attained supreme awakening. In fact, it is said that the 3 previous Buddha's in our aeon, also realized Sambodhi in this same spot. Ajahn Dhammasiha talks about the amazing strength of the spiritual energy one can experience at the 'Vajirāsana' ('Diamond Throne'), the seat under the Bodhi tree where the Buddha defeated Māra and the defilements and released his heart from all attachment, craving and ignorance. He explains that he can not recommend too highly the value of going on pilgrimage to this sacred site; the impact on one's Dhamma practice is often profound.Ajahn also talks about the fetter of Sīlabbataparāmāsa ('clinging to rites and rituals' / 'believing in purification through external actions of body and speech'). Whether on pilgrimage, or in our regular meditation practice, it's not about the body and the movements, rituals and activities the body performs; instead it's about the impact these external activities have on our mind.If we sit meditation, or perform puja at a sacred site, but the mind is actually developing unwholesome states of desire or aversion, we're wasting our time. We always have to observe carefully what is the effect of any activity on our mind, does it really lead to a diminishing of unwholesome states, and an increase in wholesome states. Dhammagiri WebsiteOur Spotify PlaylistsNewsletterDhammagiri Youtube ChannelPics#bodhgaya #vajirasana #buddha #enlightenment #mahabodhitemple #silabbataparamasa

Send us a textWhen Ellen, a music therapist and spiritual coach, encountered a near-death experience involving Jesus and Buddha on a pink cloud raft, her life transformed in unexpected ways. During our conversation, she reveals how this mystical event ignited her spiritual mission and influenced her book, "Waking Up in Heaven." Ellen's journey emphasizes the remarkable impact of sound and music therapy in healing, with insights that blend both spirituality and science to promote physical and cellular rejuvenation.Another fascinating story comes from a practitioner trained at Naropa University, who shares their own profound near-death encounter that reinforced their sense of purpose. This experience became a catalyst for their involvement in a spiritual documentary and highlighted the power of music in healing. Through the Bonnie Method and transpersonal psychology, they create transformative journeys for clients, using classical music to unlock altered states of consciousness, akin to the effects of LSD, leading to groundbreaking shifts in perception during intensive sessions. In our exploration of energy and spirituality, Ellen discusses a variety of techniques, including visualization, color, and sound, to help individuals connect with their higher selves. She highlights profound findings from Dr. Emoto and Veda Austin, illustrating the intricate relationship between water, light, and the body's electromagnetic field. Her teachings encourage embracing life's challenges as opportunities to connect with a higher presence, with music and sound serving as a powerful pathway to spiritual healing and discovery. Through these conversations, we uncover how aligning with source energy allows for co-creation of reality and the experience of miracles, offering listeners a roadmap to rediscovering their spiritual journey through the transformative power of music. But that's okay. Sharing our stories is not about nailing down the facts of an event or the exact recall of circumstances. Rather, the point of stories is to take the splintered, fractioned, mismatched pieces of our lives and, by telling the stories we need to tell stitch together moments of wholeness.Over my storytelling decades I have to come to realize that I don't need to translate or provide meaning for life events. When I speak my stories from the heart I begin to shift away from painful episodes to heal the suffering I've attached to what those episodes mean or meant. What happens next? By sharing my story maybe I help someone else heal. How do I know? I hear someone say: “What! You, too! I thought I was the only one.” [C.S. Lewis]Like the Badger in Crow and Weasel by Barry Lopez reminds us: “The stories people tell have a way of taking care of them. If stories come to you, care for them. And learn to give them away where they are needed. Sometimes a person needs a story more than food to stay alive. That is why we put these stories in each other's memory. This is how people care for themselves.”Question: What happens when you open the door to retelling a story that you've forgotten but now you remember? You're always invited: “Come for the stories - stay for the magic!” Speaking of magic, would you subscribe and spread the word with a generous 5-star review and comment - it helps us all - and join us next time!Meanwhile, stop by my Quarter Moon Story Arts website to:✓ Check out Services I Offer,✓ For a no-obligation conversation about your story questions, don't delay - get in touch today,✓ Stay current with Diane as "Wyzga on Words" on Substack.Stories From Women Who Walk Production TeamPodcaster: Diane F Wyzga & Quarter Moon Story ArtsMusic: Mer's Waltz from Crossing the Waters by Steve Schuch & Night Heron MusicAll content and image © 2019 to Present Quarter Moon Story Arts. What if there's a way to meet frustration, loneliness, or even a difficult person—with something softer and something stronger at the same time? In today's episode, we explore the transformative practice of Loving-Kindness, also known as Metta—a simple but radical form of meditation that teaches us how to see others, and ourselves, through the eyes of compassion. You'll hear a story about a yoga class in Seattle, a rattlesnake on a trail run, and what happens when you decide to look people in the eye—even when they look away. Drawing on the timeless wisdom of Sharon Salzberg, the words of Jesus Christ, and the teachings of the Buddha, Danielle guides you through a practice that's more than a moment of peace—it's a blueprint for becoming who you were always meant to be. This is the practice for when your heart feels guarded. For when you don't know what to pray or how to cultivate charity. For when you want to lead with light, but the world feels heavy. You'll learn: What Metta really means (and how to use it) The spiritual practice hidden in Matthew 5:44 to love your enemies Why the hardest person to love is often… you How to offer compassion without feeling fake A 7-minute guided Loving-Kindness meditation you can return to again and again Plus, Danielle shares how practicing Metta helped her form a soul-friendship in a new city, and how even a rattlesnake can become a teacher. Venerable Robina gives a teaching on Attachment & Emptiness during the Lawudo Trek in Nepal. One way of presenting these levels of practice which are expressed in this packaging of Tsongkhapa's called the Lamrim, this gradual path, this course, that you graduate from as a Buddha, is in terms of understanding attachment. This is massive for the Buddha, way bigger than we can think because it's assuming even the way the world is, how we're born, the kind of bodies we have, it's got a much bigger framework than we can think of. So effectively the actual delusion that's the source of all suffering is this thing called ego grasping that the realisation of emptiness cuts, and all the teachings lead to that. But effectively in daily life we can say attachment is the main problem. This bottomless pit of dissatisfaction, the neediness, that causes the anger and aversion then causes all the other things, which cause us to harm others, which causes suffering rebirths, and so on. When we understand attachment is the main problem, then junior school is learning to control the servants of the attachment, which is the body and speech obviously. We're so caught up in our own world, in the modern world I'm this body, we so utterly identify with the body, “we make the body the boss” as Lama Yeshe says, totally completely absorbed in the body. This is me! If we do say words about my mind, we point to the brain. We learned that, we haven't experienced the truth of it, we've never studied the brain, most of us, we just believe what we're told. We think we're so intelligent, that we're scientific, it's just nonsense. Most of us haven't really studied math, science, botany, all the things some people have, we just say it's true because we believe it. We think we're scientific, no we haven't studied it. We totally identify with this body, the body is massive, the senses run the show and they're the servants of attachment, that's it. So obviously the first job, because attachment is so primordial, you've got to start controlling the servants of the attachment, which is the body and speech, which is our behaviour. Do what your grandma says - behave nicely, don't harm others. This is fundamental. By controlling the body and speech, the servants of attachment, you're naturally subduing attachment, it's very evident. Now you're really qualified to go to high school and get to the root of the problem, and begin to understand and unpack all the delusions, in particular attachment. You become your own therapist, this genius person, who can unpack and unravel the mind to this unbelievable degree, including getting this incredible concentration, inconceivable, unheard of in our modern psychology. It's just seen as religion, we throw it away as some kind of rubbish. We have no idea how astonishing it is, how sophisticated, how brilliant, and anyone if they worked hard could do it. It's all there, coming from these amazing Hindus thousands of years ago before the Buddha, these geniuses who mapped the mind internally. It's so mind-blowing. By this point you've got renunciation, you're incredible, which means two parts - one you know what suffering is and you're sick of it, and two bullseye you know the causes, karma and delusions, as Lama Zopa says “you've got renunciation when just the thought of another moment of attachment is so disgusting, it's like being in a septic tank”. That's way to go, that's pretty profound. How would you be so far - radiant, joyful, content, fulfilled, happy, you'd be an incredible human being by now. Lawudo Trek, Nepal, 31st March 2019. (Spirit Rock Meditation Center) For the Buddha, practice was understood as involving three trainings, in wisdom, meditation, and ethics (sila). Ethics, typically under-emphasized in later Buddhism, including Western Buddhism, with sometimes clear negative consequences, had as its horizon helping others. The Buddha said: “Wander forth . . . for the welfare of the multitude, for the happiness of the multitude, out of compassion for the world.” The later emphasis on the bodhisattva develops this emphasis further. In this talk, we suggest a contemporary “Eightfold Path” for understanding and responding to the current difficult times in the society and world. It's outlined in terms of three wisdom guidelines, two meditation guidelines, and three ethics guidelines. The talk is followed by discussion.

NL TeamThis week, host Sumedha Mittal is joined by The Caravan's Sunil Kashyap, and Jatinder Kaur Tur. Jatinder reports from Kashmir, where three bodies of locals who were in police detention surfaced in the Veshaw River. Following the Pahalgam terror attack, Kashmiris felt being suspected and criminalised. Amid rampant arrests and deaths, families like that of Nazir Ahmad Magray – whose 20-year-old son was taken in a night raid by the Jammu and Kashmir Police's Special Operations Group – have been left shattered.“We are talking about three brothers [and one man] who went missing and there was no believable story from the police. It is said that they drowned in Veshaw river or naala, which was completely dry and no one could have drowned there,” says Jatinder. Meanwhile, Sunil's report uncovers an unseen, unheard truth from Bihar. At Bodh Gaya's Mahabodhi Mahavihara – a sacred Buddhist site – Buddhist monks and Dalit-Bahujan groups are protesting the Bodh Gaya Temple Act of 1949, which mandates Hindu involvement in managing the temple. This stems from centuries of Hindu appropriation of the site, despite its centrality to Buddhism. “The Hindu Sangh sees Buddhism, not Islam, as its biggest ideological challenge,” says Sunil. Dharma is the experience of reality, and also the expression of that experience in the form of the Buddha's teaching, especially the law of conditionality. It is the raft that carries you to Enlightenment, the further shore; it is whatever helps you to develop spiritually. This classic talk by Sangharakshita was given in 1968 as part of the series Introducing the Three Jewels of Buddhism. *** Help us keep FBA Podcasts free for everyone! In this episode of "Decoding Academia: Required Readings", Chris and Matt take a joint stroll through the history of Buddhism through Donald S. Lopez Jr.'s latest book, 'Buddhism: A Journey Through History.' We discuss the unexpected historical and cultural facets of Buddhism, how modern interpretations can often romanticise ancient practices, and whether Matt's mind has been blown. We also consider important issues like the Buddha's retractable penis, incredibly long tongue, and just how strongly we should condemn monks scribbling pictures of their would-be brides. So join us in the cycle of samsara as we strive to earn some merit and at least crawl a little closer to enlightenment.Book ReviewedLopez, D. S. (2025). Buddhism: A Journey through History.
