This is part two of our interview with the seminal film scholar, critic, and composer Michel Chion. From the late 70s onwards Chion has been one of the leading voices at the intersection of film scholarship and cinephilic criticism. His work spans a huge roster of filmmakers and subjects, but it's his work on film sound with which he is arguably most identified. Books such as The Voice in Cinema (1982), Audio/Vision (1993), Music in Cinema (1995) & Film, A Sound Art in many ways defined the sub-field of film sound criticism. Chion also wrote for Cahiers du Cinéma in the 1980s and has written books on the work of Jacques Tati, Andrei Tarkovsky, Stanley Kubrick and David Lynch. Before turning to cinema, Chion was part of the experimental school of Music Concrete under the mentorship of Pierre Schaeffer, the "godfather" of avant-garde electronic music in France. He continues to compose to this day. Chion asked that he give his answers in French so I enlisted the help of a colleague from the University of Brighton, the sound artist, composer, and performer Johanna Bramli (check out her work here), to help with the translation. Dabei werden, den Annäherungen an andere digitale Medien nicht unähnlich, vor allem Podcasts als Instrument der "public science" verstanden und genutzt. Erzählende Formate, Interviews aber auch gebaute Features können dabei als bevorzugte Formate erwähnt werden. Podcasts dienen so vor allem als Medium der Wissensvermittlung. Aber was sind die Potenziale von Podcasts in der Wissensgenese, in der erkenntnistheoretischen Reflexion methodisch-theoretischer Produktion wissenschaftlicher Erkenntnis selbst? Welche Formen der Konstitution von Wissen sind in auditiven Medien möglich, die in anderen, etwa schriftlichen Texten, nicht möglich sind? Sind Sinn und Sinnlichkeit vermittelt? Werden hierüber neue Zugänge zur Gesellschaft wie auch zur Soziologie möglich? Wie kann etwa mit gesprochener Sprache anders als mit schriftlicher Sprache gedacht werden - sowohl sprechend als auch hörend? Mit welchen Mitteln und unter welchen Bedingungen können auditive Darstellungen als strenge wissenschaftliche Textformate akzeptiert werden? Und welche Bedeutung hat schliesslich die spezifische Form auditiver Medien: Podcast? Der Vortrag beschäftigt sich mit den Eigenheiten der Darstellung und Durchführung der Wissensgenese im Medium der Stimme, des Sprechens und des Hörens. Die Stimme als ‘reflexives Medium‘ ermöglicht über das Mehr, über den unauslöschbaren Überschuss ihrer "Rauheit" und Körperlichkeit, ein Aufbrechen des diskursiv Verfestigten und eine reflexive Beobachtung der Medialität aller Erkenntnispraxis selbst und das vermeintlich bloss Subjektive neu denken lässt. Darüber hinaus geht es um ein Denken im Gespräch, das über den bloss argumentativen Streit des Diskurses hinausgeht. If you live in Connecticut, chances are pretty high that you know Chion Wolf’s voice. In addition to being the sound engineer and daytime announcer for Connecticut Public Radio, she hosts two podcasts of her own- a storytelling show called The Mouth Off, and an advice show called What’s Your Problem, both recorded live in Hartford, CT. She has a million other projects that I could mention, but it would probably take up the entirety of the podcast to describe all of them. By far my favorite thing she does, though, is a weekly live stream on facebook and instagram every sunday afternoon called “it’s chopped salad time!” in which she makes salads for the week and talks about life and is her charming self. It’s delightful. When Chion was 25, long before she was a familiar voice in CT, Chion was working at T-Mobile at Westfarms Mall in Farmington, CT. The voice in cinema is a phenomenon that is in many ways taken for granted. Since the advent of the talkies, the speaking voice synchronised to the human body on-screen is the ingrained process for narrative exposition and character development. However, this accepted synchronisation is one of sound cinema’s fundamental illusions. This major production for The Cinematologists features the analysis from leading film scholars and critics, each focusing on uses and interpretations of cinematic voice, using a plethora of filmic examples. Many aspects of the cinematic voice are explored including star voices, script and performance, sonic aesthetics of the voice, voice-overs, the singing voice, voices in animation, the disembodied voice, and politics of who has a voice and who listens. We draw upon many of the key thinkers on film sound including the seminal work of Michel Chion. Chion developed concepts like Audio-Vision, to explore how sound shapes how the screened image can be understood, and acousmetré, meaning the cinema’s use of disembodied off-screen voice. Using these ideas he forwards the argument that sound is not a secondary addendum to image in the cinematic experience, but fundamentally structures how we see and understand film. Unlike our usual conversational format, this episode is an audio-essay; recorded interviews cut together with indicative clips in a sonic collage which is hopefully an immersive experience transversing the boundaries between creativity and criticism. When Lara Pullen’s son was diagnosed with Prader-Willi syndrome, she began to dive into the scientific literature about the rare condition. Pullen, a scientist and co-founder of the Chion Foundation, discovered that pitolisant, a recently approved drug for narcolepsy, might benefit patients with Prader-Willi. Working with her Chion co-founder Maria Picone, who developed an online data-gathering platform for patient-reported outcomes, they tracked the effects of the drug in three patients. In a clinical vignette published in the Journal of Pediatric Pharmacology and Therapeutics in April, they reported their findings. We spoke to Pullen about her efforts, the value of patient-reported outcomes, and why the work she’s done suggests the need for a more neurologically-based approach to treating Prader-Willi.

On episode #34 of the Speak Up Storytelling podcast, Matthew and Elysha Dicks talk storytelling! In our followup segment, we hear from a listener who hosted an evening of stories at this home with great success.
