Welcome back to Fright School! This week, we predict how the horror genre will respond to the Trump Era. We reflect on the subject of fatness in horror after reading Dread Central's recent article on CARRIE. Joe's takeover continues with IDLE HANDS (1999). We remind our listeners that cannabis is legal for recreational use in California. We discuss the Columbine Massacre's affect on the film, overcomplicate the film with a discussion of our bodies in revolt, and pick some of our favorite teen horror films that climax at a dance! On this week's Labor History Today:  While historians have written prolifically about the 1914 Ludlow Massacre, there has been a lack of attention to the Columbine Massacre in which police shot and killed six striking coal miners and wounded sixty more protestors during the 1927–1928 Colorado Coal Strike, even though its aftermath exerted far more influence on subsequent national labor policies. In her 2023 book Remembering Ludlow but Forgetting the Columbine: The 1927–1928 Colorado Coal Strike, Leigh Campbell-Hale reorients understandings of labor history from the 1920s through the 1960s and the construction of public memory—and forgetting—surrounding those events. Our colleague Robert Lindgren, who hosts the Labor Exchange radio show on KGNU, Boulder, Denver, and Fort Collins, recently released a 3-part interview with Campbell-Hale; on today's show, Part 1. What ignites such darkness in the human soul? This episode untangles the grim threads of the Columbine High School massacre, shedding light on the calculated actions of Dylan Klebold and Eric Harris. This episode captures the raw fear, the instinctive bravery, and the critical moments that defined a day of unspeakable tragedy. As the dust settles, the response effort by law enforcement and first responders takes center stage. From the tense actions of Deputy Gardner and Deputy Smoker to the strategic yet chaotic SWAT maneuvers, we examine the complex reality of managing a crisis of this magnitude. #483: The Real Story Of The Columbine Massacre | Chris Graves

After a quarter of a century, there are still many important questions about what actually happened during the most well-known school shooting in American history, the Columbine massacre, which left 13 dead and 24 injured. Researcher Chris Graves has a different timeline of events, and his version of what happened varies drastically from the official narrative of two loner kids with trench coats and a vendetta. There are important questions about how many shooters were really there on that day in 1999, and why the media was so disinterested in getting to the bottom of what actually happened. With what we know about the school shootings of the recent past, a dive into the original event is an eye-opening experience and creates far more questions than answers. When the news hit about planes hitting the Twin Towers in New York (September 11, 2001)? Where were you when the news hit about the Columbine school shooting in Littleton, Colorado (April 20, 1999)? I remember it clearly. I was teaching at Garrett Middle School. It's hard to believe the deadliest school shooting occurred twenty-five years ago. The lives of twelve students and one teacher were taken that day. Twenty-one others were wounded, including Kacey Ruegsegger Johnson.  In this interview, Kacey shares her story of being shot in the library, her recovery, and how those challenges prepared her for the challenges she would face in the following years.  Kacey's daughter, Logan, was diagnosed with aniridia, or the absence of irises in her eyes. She knew what she'd learned would help her parent a child with disabilities. She said, “Only God could have known that the injuries I sustained at Columbine would turn into a huge blessing with regard to my parenting journey.”Kacey is on the Board of Directors for the Limb Preservation Society. Notable quotes from this episode with Kacey Johnson:  ·         "In that most horrific moment of my life also came the proof that I love a living God and that He's bigger than the absolute worst kind of evil that was right in my face. He's bigger than that. It gives me so much to live for."·         “I'd become comfortable in the trauma I knew and how I was just surviving it. I didn't know how to get out of the surviving and into the thriving. And I wanted to be thriving as a parent and not just surviving.”·         “God has ultimately transformed the shotgun slug that tore through me into seeds that have grown to produce very good fruit in my life. The fiery missile of hate that burned through my body has not had the pleasure of destroying me, and what was ultimately meant for evil will continue to be choked out by all the beautiful good that is still to come.”Bible verses: ·         Romans 8:2 “For the law of the Spirit of life has set you free from the law of sin and death.”·         Romans 8:28 “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him.” Connect with Kacey Ruegsegger Johnson:Her website: https://www.kaceyjohnsonspeaker.comOn Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/KaceyRuegseggerJohnsonOn Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/kaceyjohnsonspeaker

There are no two ways around this fact: today's conversation is tough. It's really, really tough. Today, April 20, 2024, marks 25 years since the Columbine High School massacre in Littleton, Colorado. I woke up this morning and read an article in People magazine about Frank DeAngelis, who was the principal at Columbine at the time of the shooting. In the article, DeAngelis said that every single morning, he wakes up and says the names of those killed in that day's horrible events. He said he almost died twice that day, and, in his words, “For whatever reason God spared me that day. So I need to try to help others.” I will take a page from Principal DeAngelis and begin this episode by saying the names of the 12 students and one teacher killed that day: Cassie Bernall, Steven Curnow, Corey DePooter, Kelly Fleming, Matt Kechter, Daniel Mauser, Danny Rohrbough, Dave Sanders, Rachel Scott, Isaiah Shoels, John Tomlin, Lauren Townsend, and Kyle Velasquez. Thirteen people who woke up on this morning 25 years ago and headed into school for what they probably imagined would be a typical Tuesday—and they never came home. Today on the show I have Dave Cullen, who wrote the definitive book on the Columbine massacre, simply titled Columbine, in 2009, 10 years after the attack happened. It took Dave a full decade to write this masterpiece, and he followed it up with a book about the Parkland school shooting, simply titled Parkland, in 2019. Dave's Columbine book has a new edition and we talk about that in today's episode. You can feel Dave's passion for a topic he spent a full decade writing about oozing throughout this conversation. I was 12 years old and in the sixth grade on April 20, 1999, when perpetrators Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold shot and killed 12 fellow classmates and a teacher at the school. The massacre was also an attempted bombing that failed, and 10 of the 12 students killed were in the school library, the epicenter of the attack, where Harris and Klebold also killed themselves at the massacre's end. When it happened, Columbine was the deadliest mass school shooting at a K-12 school in U.S. history; Harris and Klebold had been planning their attack for at least a year and planned for it to be primarily a bombing attack, and secondarily a shooting attack. When the bombs they'd built failed to detonate, they began shooting. Their motive remains inconclusive, but Dave and I get into the “why” of it all in our conversation today. Its aftermath has unfortunately spawned dozens of copycat killings, called “the Columbine effect,” and the word “Columbine” itself has become a word symbolizing school shootings. The attack took place from 11:19 a.m. to 12:08 p.m., culminating in the suicides of Harris and Klebold. In 2007, the Columbine Memorial opened to the public, and two years later, in 2009, Dave's book came out. Dave is considered the nation's foremost authority on Columbine, and his book covers two major storylines: the killers' evolution leading up to the attack, and the survivors' struggles with its aftermath after it happened. Chapters alternate between those two stories, and the book spent eight weeks on The New York Times bestseller list and won numerous awards, drawing comparisons to Truman Capote's classic In Cold Blood and Ann Rule's The Stranger Beside Me. This conversation is a difficult one, but necessary.   Columbine by Dave Cullen The audiobook is also available “Confronting: Columbine” podcast

The Context of White Supremacy welcomes the return of Dr. Angelyn Spaulding Flowers. A professor and coordinator of the Crime, Justice, and Security Studies Program at the University of the District of Columbia, Dr. Fowler is classified as a black female. She's one of the few black researchers who's written about the US scourge of mass school shootings. Dr. Flowers helped Gus and C.O.W.S. listeners establish a superb foundation for understanding school shootings in the US (and the world?). We discussed the book that she co-authored, 20 Years of School Based Mass Shootings in the United States, Columbine to Santa Fe, just as we began our discussion of the 1999 Columbine High School Massacre. We've done so much research since then and, tragically, there have been many more school shootings since our spring 2023 chat. We're eager to hear Dr. Spaulding's views on the conviction of black mother Deja Taylor, who'll serve several years in prison/greater confinement after her 6-year-old son took her gun to school and shot his White female teacher. We'll also discuss the Department of Justice report that suggests officers who responded to the 2022 Uvalde school shooting failed to respond in accordance with current policy related to school shootings. Some may call this cowardice. Some of the families of the 21 victims allege that Uvalde officers have harassed them over the months since the shooting. #PumpedUpKicks #TheGreatEqualizer #TheCOWS15Years INVEST in The COWS – http://paypal.me/TheCOWS Cash App: https://cash.app/$TheCOWS CALL IN NUMBER: 605.313.5164 CODE: 564943#

On April 20th, 1999, in Littleton, Colorado, two bullied goths took righteous vengeance on the popular kids that made their lives a living hell; they entered Columbine High School that morning, armed with AR-15s and went on a “jock hunting spree”, targeting bullies, Christians, and the pretty girls who rejected their romantic advances. By the end of that school day, 15 people were dead. Except almost none of that was true on April 20th, 1999. But it remains the way the public remembers the Columbine Massacre. And this proliferation of mistruths, this sensationalized version of the tragedy, would become the genesis of Columbine's ultimate legacy: the Era of the School Shooter.  Show Notes: https://www.tiktok.com/t/ZPRvvuhaU/ https://www.tiktok.com/t/ZPRvvmRkH/ https://www.tiktok.com/t/ZPRvvBS9w/

The Context of White Supremacy welcomes Jeff Kass. A reporter for the now-defunct Rocky Mountain News, Kass is a renowned journalist who was on the scene April 20th, 1999 for the Columbine Massacre. He investigated and reported on this massacre for a decade and compiled his research into the 2009 publication: Columbine: A True Crime Story. Mr. Kass missed out on viewing the Basement Tapes, but did file a number of Freedom of Information requests to get a better understanding of why 13 people were killed by two White teens. We'll discuss how this failed bombing is connected to the other White bombers of the decade and the pattern of “White Victimhood” connecting the killers. We'll also discuss the infamous Sue Klebold - mother of one of the killers, and the corruption of the Jefferson County Sheriffs's Office before and after April 20, 1999. We also detail the Racist abuse that Shoels family faced after their son Isaiah was killed. Mr. Kass spent time with the family and documented their response to the massacre. The Context of White Supremacy welcomes Dr. Judith Fathallah. Since we began discussing the Columbine High School Massacre of 1999, Gus has learned so much. Specifically, two new terms I learned because of this subject are: Columbiners & Hybristophilia. The former refers to individuals, most of whom classify as White, with a tremendous interest (obsession) with the people and events associated with the school slaughter. The other term refers to people, again, mostly Whitefolks, with an attraction (often sexual) “toward real or fictional criminals or gangsters. It is a romantic vision of criminality and of the violation of social rules and moral codes.” The cowardly White Columbine tandem has legions of White males and females who “worship” these two as gods, or at minimum, two tragic White dudes who're cute and in need of a hug. We'll speak with Dr. Judith Fathallah about her research on this subject and the White worship of White mass shooters, serial killers, and child murders. An Outreach and Research Associate at Lancaster University and a Research Fellow at Coventry. Dr. Fathallah's interests are new and digital media, fan and subcultures, popular music, and digital literacies. She is currently a member of the COPIM project (Community-Led Infrastructures for Open Access Books), which seeks to research and and develop community-owned infrastructures for the publication of open access books. We'll discuss her 2022 report: “Being a Fangirl of a Serial Killer Is Not Okay.” Although much of Dr. Fathallah's scholarship examines the “sexist” criticisms of White gore consumers, Gus is far more struck by the overwhelmingly White aspect of the Columbiners and True Crime fans in general. #FanBoy #TheCOWS14Years INVEST in The COWS – http://paypal.me/TheCOWS Cash App: https://cash.app/$TheCOWS CALL IN NUMBER: 605.313.5164 CODE: 564943#

While historians have written prolifically about the 1914 Ludlow Massacre, there has been a lack of attention to the violent event remembered now as the Columbine Massacre in which police shot and killed six striking coal miners and wounded sixty more protestors during the 1927–1928 Colorado Coal Strike, even though its aftermath exerted far more influence upon subsequent national labor policies. This volume is a comparative biography of three key participants before, during, and after the strike: A. S. Embree, the IWW strike leader; Josephine Roche, the owner of the coal mine property where the Columbine Massacre took place; and Powers Hapgood, who came to work for Roche four months after she signed the 1928 United Mine Worker's contract. The author demonstrates the significance of this event to national debates about labor during the period, as well as changes and continuities in labor history starting in the progressive era and continuing with 1930s New Deal labor policies and through the 1980s. This examination of the 1927–1928 Colorado Coal Strike reorients understandings of labor history from the 1920s through the 1960s and the construction of public memory—and forgetting—surrounding those events. Remembering Ludlow but Forgetting the Columbine appeals to academic and general readers interested in Colorado history, labor history, mining history, gender studies, memory, and historiography.
