ASB is reporting a 10 percent increase in half year profits for the six months to December 2022. The latest half-year financial report states that the bank has made an $840 million net profit. CEO Vittoria Shortt acknowledged that ASB's increase in earnings came at a challenging time for Kiwi households, thanks to rising interest rates and the increased cost of living. Vittoria Shortt says this recent profit increase was driven by an increase in lending across both their business and personal customers, and that they've proceeded more deposits this period.

BARRY FORSHAW chats to Paul Burke about SIMENON: THE MAN, THE BOOKS, THE FILMS. A 21st Century re-examination of SIMENON, Maigret and the Romans Durs novels, a wide ranging discussion of everything from Simenon's place in French literature to Robert Newton and Spartacus. SIMENON: THE MAN, THE BOOKS, THE FILMS The legendary Georges Simenon was the most successful and influential writer of crime fiction in a language other than English; Andre Gide called him 'the greatest French novelist of our times'. Celebrated crime fiction expert Barry Forshaw's informed and lively study draws together Simenon's extraordinary life and his work on both page and screen. By the time of Simenon's death in 1989, his French detective Maigret had become an institution, rivalled only by Sherlock Holmes. The pipe-smoking Inspector of Police is a quietly spoken observer of human nature who uses the techniques of psychology on those he encounters (both the guilty and the innocent) - with no rush to moral condemnation. Simenon's non-Maigret standalone books are among the most commanding in the genre, and, as a trenchant picture of French society, his concise novels collectively offer up a fascinating analysis. And his influence on an army of later crime writers is incalculable. Alongside his own considerable insights, Barry Forshaw has interviewed people who worked either with Simenon or on his books: publishers, editors, translators, and other specialist writers. He has created a literary prism through which to appreciate one of the most distinctive achievements in the whole of crime fiction.Barry Forshaw is one of the UK's leading experts on crime fiction and film. Books include Crime Fiction: A Reader's Guide, Nordic Noir, Italian Cinema, American Noir and British Crime Film. Other work: Sex and Film, British Gothic Cinema, Euro Noir, Historical Noir, BFI War of the Worlds and the Keating Award-winners British Crime Writing Encyclopedia and Brit Noir. But James was financially free even before selling his company. How? Practicing what most investing books preach — investing regularly in the stock market (ETFs), consistently for many years. In this episode, we talk about freedom, investing, how to start a business, and how to sell it to a multi-billion, public company.

My guest this week is a specialist on the world's largest and most secret asset segment – public asset. The hidden goldmine owned by you and me and seen all around us but yet kept in the dark by outdated public systems. He led the first effort by a European government to systematically address the ownership and management of government enterprises and real estate. He is the author of ‘The Public Wealth of Nations' – The Economist and Financial Time's best book of the year, as well as ‘The Public Wealth of Cities'. Please welcome my guest, Dag Detter. Bio Dag Detter offers us a unique idea which will revolutionise they way we think of public finance, be it for a national government or a city. He has unrivalled hands-on experience, backed up by academic data and research, to demonstrate that this is an invaluable tool to boost the economy and fight corruption. The idea of the public wealth of nations identifies a problem that few people had realised exists. It shatters the tired categories of left and right. And it suggests a relatively pain-free way of boosting economic growth. As President of Stattum, the Swedish government holding company, and a Director at the Ministry of Industry, Dag Detter led the restructuring of the Swedish government's portfolio of state owned enterprises, representing some 25 per cent of the domestic economy. The first attempt by a government to systematically address the ownership and management of government enterprises, quickly yielded high returns and the portfolio ultimately outperformed the local stock market. Detter has worked extensively as an investment banker and an advisor in Asia and Europe and served as Non-Executive Director on a range of boards of private and public companies. He now specialises in advising on the restructuring of public sector balance sheets and the management of under-performing public assets. He assists governments and public institutions in designing and implementing strategies for restoring balance sheet strength. Dag Detter is the co-author of The Public Wealth of Nations, selected as; The Economist's Book of the Year 2015 and The FT's best book of the year 2015, as well as the forthcoming book The Public Wealth of Cities. Should I just stop taking that and allow the fund to grow and take my tax-free lump sum at a later date? 28:58 Does the growth rate I see in my account include the regular contributions I am making? 30:16 A recent article dated 14 April 2021 in the Financial Time bore the headline: Investors brace for a shift‚ as momentum and value collide. I wanted Murat on to discuss two survey papers he and his colleagues wrote on the use of deep learning in finance.I've long been fascinated with finance and trading. My first job after I left academia was as the lead quant in a hedge fund, and ever since, I've tried to stay abreast of what tools and techniques quants and data scientists in finance are using. Forecasting in this setting usually means price prediction or price movement (trend) prediction. Output of forecasting models are used to inform investment decisions. What makes finance particularly challenging is that many people are using the same underlying data (time series of prices/values), and thus as Murat notes, many firms use alternative data sources (such as text) as potential sources of additional signal.Download the 2020 NLP Survey Report and learn how companies are using and implementing natural language technologies.Detailed show notes can be found on The Data Exchange web site.Subscribe to The Gradient Flow Newsletter.

Meskipun data ekonomi AS yang mengecewakan.
Alex Soojung-Kim Pang (@askpang) is author to three titles including ‘Rest: Why You Get More Done When You Work Less’ and ‘The Distraction Addiction’. ‘Shorter: How working less will revolutionise the way your company gets things done’ is his latest book released in the UK early March 2019. All three have been translated into more than a dozen languages, and Alex Pang’s work has been reviewed by New York time, New Yorker, Financial Time and Guardian. As well as writing, Alex Pang runs his consultation company ‘Strategy & Rest’ (www.strategy.rest) in California. I went to hear Alex talk at the Sunday Times ‘Life Lessons’ event in the Barbican in Feb. My mind was captivated by hearing about Alex’s research and the exciting concept of working a 4-day week. Oh and before you ask … WITHOUT working longer days or extra hours.Following some social media banter with Alex I struck gold! Alex was fantastic and volunteered to be a guest on Hope & Patience. A chance for us to have our very own Q&A with the guy. My challenge was to read the, at that time, unpublished 310-page book over an evening and early morning before the interview that day. I did it … I can honestly say it was an easy read and full of absolute gems. Alex and I chat about how the shorter week can work, early global adopters of it and the benefits employers and employees have noticed. These include Michelin starred restaurants and care homes … as well as software, advertising and design companies. Many of which now use it as their USP. We also discuss the challenges of its roll out too.Alex share’s his tips of what to tell you clients, how to do the initial roll out and a heap more too. I make sure that those of us who are sole operators/solopreneurs get some advice too. It really is a jam-packed episode where you will learn a lot. I promise! My book recommendation for this episode had to be Alex’s latest book: Shorter, Work Better, SmarterChocolate: Posh pick n mix from Fortnum & Mason!Quote: ‘Let’s get started’ Alex PangI would love your feedback on the show, what you would like to hear more of, less of, and importantly, none of. Þátturinn hófst á rabbi um veður, færð og fréttir dagsins. Þá var litið í Tímann og Alþýðublaðið frá því fyrir fimmtíu árum en á forsíðum var m.a. fjallað um eldsvoðann í SÍS verksmiðjunum á Gleráreyrum á Akureyri nokkrum dögum fyrr og sagt frá því að athugunum á brúargerð yfir Hvalfjörð hefði verið slegið á frest. Kaupsýslumaðurinn George Soros er maður ársins 2018 að mati breska viðskiptadagblaðsins Financial Time. How do you figure out the right time to have kids? After leaving his job at the age of 34 (with a very sweet severance package), Sam from Financial Samurai didn't feel ready for kids. Quite a few years later, he wishes he had had them sooner. Where do kids fit in your FI plan? Sam has a very interesting story and you will love hearing his advice and family planning tips. We also chat about... The quick path to FI The middle-class families with $300,000 incomes His biggest mistakes when family planning Why you want a severance package How to engineer your layoff Enjoy this chat with Sam, and please subscribe to us in iTunes if you enjoyed it! Show notes and links from today's episode The Financial Samurai Podcast Sam's blog: The Financial Samurai Sam's book: How to Make Money Quitting Your Job ($35 off using the code 'Firedrill') The $300,000 per year Middle Class Income Sam on Twitter Key takeaways from our chat with Sam 1 - Family timing is hard Sam's biggest mistake was thinking he needed too much money and time before having kids. Now he wishes he started sooner. The truth is that having kids screw up your FI plans. You could end up trying for ages and delaying your FI plans, or you may have to try other methods such as IVF or surrogacy, costing you more. Kids take energy and time, so the sooner you start the better. 2 - You have more power as an employee than you think Sam explains how he engineered his layoff through a pretty sweet severance package. The trick: understanding that you have more power than you think. Your company wants to be on good terms with you: losing you on bad terms could cost them a lot of money and stress. Not only do they need to find and re-train someone, but leaving an angry message on social media can cost them their reputation. Sam explains that once you realise this, you can negotiate a good severance package with your company and stay on good terms. 3 - How to accelerate your path to FI Sam lives in the Bay area and explains that middle-class families living there have an income of $300,000 (wow!). Why? Because they work in tech companies and have huge starting salaries. If you want to make good money and reach FI quickly, the key is having a job in an industry that pays well (yes, Bay area). Study a degree that will pay you the most, and then work, save and invest till your FI number. It's not for everyone, but you'll end up retiring at 34 just like Sam! Questions? Like or dislike?

When making a decision, do you take ALL facts into account – including your “future self?” When most people make a decision it’s hard for them to see the impact of their decision on their “future self” – but this is a critical piece of information to take into account. Professor Hal Hershfield, Associate Professor Marketing and Behavioral Decision Making at UCLA Anderson School of Management, breaks down the reasons why people make poor financial decisions. As a behavioral decision making specialist, his research covers if, and how, better decision making skills can be taught. He cites his findings that people can make better financial choices if they keep in mind their “future self” - the person you will be later on in life. Unfortunately, when the majority of investors are planning their portfolios, they very seldom consider their future self’s needs. Professor Hershfield has some insight on why it is difficult to think about the future. He also has some advice on how to make better financial decisions. Understand why your brokerage firm sent you a “Dear John” letter If you moved out of America, but still keep your assets in an American brokerage firm, there’s a good chance that your brokerage firm will send you a letter asking you to close your account. Doug explains why many U.S. brokerage firms are reluctant to keep accounts with international addresses. He gives action steps you can take if receive a “Dear John” letter. The Congressional Budget Office this week concluded that 24 million Americans stand to lose their health insurance by 2026 if the Republican plan to revise Obamacare is approved. Many of the plan's supporters didn’t like what they heard, so they criticized the CBO and its numbers. White House spokesman Sean Spicer said "If you’re looking at the CBO for accuracy, you’re looking in the wrong place." Former Speaker of the House and Trump administration supporter Newt Gingrich said "They should abolish the Congressional Budget Office. It is corrupt. It is dishonest." It's not the first time the Trump administration has responded to inconvenient news by attacking government statistics. When asked about the most recent jobs report last week, Spicer said the numbers "may have been phony in the past" but were "very real" this time. This week on Money Talking, Cardiff Garcia, U.S. Editor with the Financial Time’s Alphaville blog, and Stan Collender, a federal budget expert with Qorvis MSLGROUP, take a look at what happens when officials openly dismiss numbers from independent government agencies.

This thesis presents several non-parametric and parametric models for estimating dynamic dependence between financial time series and evaluates their ability to precisely estimate risk measures. Furthermore, the different dependence models are used to analyze the integration of emerging markets into the world economy. In order to analyze numerous dependence structures and to discover possible asymmetries, two distinct model classes are investigated: the multivariate GARCH and Copula models. On the theoretical side a new dynamic dependence structure for multivariate Archimedean Copulas is introduced which lifts the prevailing restriction to two dimensions and extends the multivariate dynamic Archimedean Copulas to more than two dimensions. On this basis a new mixture copula is presented using the newly invented multivariate dynamic dependence structure for the Archimedean Copulas and mixing it with multivariate elliptical copulas. Simultaneously a new process for modeling the time-varying weights of the mixture copula is introduced: this specification makes it possible to estimate various dependence structures within a single model. The empirical analysis of different portfolios shows that all equity portfolios and the bond portfolios of the emerging markets exhibit negative asymmetries, i.e. increasing dependence during market downturns. However, the portfolio consisting of the developed market bonds does not show any negative asymmetries. Overall, the analysis of the risk measures reveals that parametric models display portfolio risk more precisely than non-parametric models. However, no single parametric model dominates all other models for all portfolios and risk measures. The investigation of dependence between equity and bond portfolios of developed countries, proprietary, and secondary emerging markets reveals that secondary emerging markets are less integrated into the world economy than proprietary. Thus, secondary emerging markets are more suitable to diversify a portfolio consisting of developed equity or bond indices than proprietary

In this thesis, we analyze nonparametric estimation of Lévy-based models using wavelets methods. As the considered class is restricted to pure-jump Lévy processes, it is sufficient to estimate their Lévy densities. For implementing a wavelet density estimator, it is necessary to setup a preliminary histogram estimator. Simulation studies show that there is an improvement of the wavelet estimator by invoking an optimally selected histogram. The wavelet estimator is based on block-thresholding of empirical coefficients. We conclude with two empirical applications which show that there is a very high arrival rate of small jumps in financial data sets.
