“We are now competing in conversation with someone's feed.”Connecting with others requires more than knowing what to say. The signals we send through our body language, the questions we ask, and even where we position ourselves can shape how others experience a conversation. In this Quick Thinks episode of Think Fast, Talk Smart, behavioral researcher and author of Cues and Captivate, Vanessa Van Edwards joins Matt Abrahams to explore the subtle cues that make communication more engaging. She shares strategies for navigating networking events, sparking more meaningful conversations, and signaling the warmth and competence that shape charisma and connection.Takeaways:Connection starts before you speak. Visible palms, eye contact, positioning, and other nonverbal cues can signal warmth and openness, shaping how others experience an interaction from the start.Better conversations spark curiosity. Moving beyond routine small talk with engaging questions, surprising stories, and genuine enthusiasm can make interactions more memorable and meaningful.Activity:Create a conversational feed. Start a note on your phone and collect three things from your week—a surprising moment, an interesting observation, or a small win. Bring one into your next networking event or meeting as “conversational confetti” instead of defaulting to routine small talk.Printable Expanded Takeaways & ActivitiesEpisode Reference Links:Vanessa Van EdwardsVanessa's Books: Cues / CaptivateEp.301 Trust at First Sight: Create More Meaningful Connections Connect:Premium Signup >>>> Think Fast Talk Smart PremiumEmail Questions & Feedback >>> hello@fastersmarter.ioEpisode Transcripts >>> Think Fast Talk Smart WebsiteNewsletter Signup + English Language Learning >>> FasterSmarter.ioThink Fast Talk Smart >>> LinkedIn, Instagram, YouTubeMatt Abrahams >>> LinkedIn Chapters:(00:00) - Introduction (00:37) - Why Your Hands Matter (02:20) - Networking With Confidence (05:34) - Make Small Talk More Engaging (09:03) - The Science of Charisma (13:11) - Conclusion ********Thank you to our sponsors. In this episode, I'm joined by Lurch and we talk about the 2026 Indian Roadmaster that was just added to the Law Abiding Biker stable. This isn't my first time in the saddle of an Indian. Long-time viewers of my YouTube Channel will remember I ran a Pursuit PowerPlus for about a year, followed by a loaned 2025 Indian Roadmaster PowerPlus last fall, a bike I still have on hand. Both of those were loaner relationships, which is exactly why this 2026 Roadmaster means something different: it's the first Indian Motorcycle that's actually mine. I've also attended multiple Indian Motorcycle press events to test ride and review other motorcycles and those are also on my YouTube Channel. SUPPORT US AND SHOP IN THE OFFICIAL LAW ABIDING BIKER STORE I want to remind newer viewers what's always set Law Abiding Biker apart: I'm independent. I don't work for any motorcycle manufacturer — I work for myself and for you, the riding community. That means every video, including this one, comes with the same honest treatment: what I like right out of the box, and just as importantly, the small things that could be improved as I rack up miles. Owning this bike now, rather than borrowing it, means I can go further than ever — full customization, long-term testing, and an ongoing series of ride and review videos as the PowerPlus Dark Horse gets broken in. CHECK OUT OUR HUNDREDS OF FREE HELPFUL VIDEOS ON OUR YOUTUBE CHANNEL AND SUBSCRIBE! True to form, I wasted no time getting the rider triangle set up before the bike's even been started. First up was pulling the reflectors — step one on basically every bike that rolls into my shop. From there: Ciro drink holder — available in black or chrome, installed here using the perch mount (swapping the factory half-clamp for hardware and a ball head), with a universal bar mount option also available for those who don't want to swap the factory clamp bolts. Biker Gripper phone mount — my own cell phone mount, made in the USA and sold exclusively through the Law Abiding Biker Store. It's rated for 18 lbs of grip strength, needs no proprietary case, fits the largest of smartphones out there, has built-in vibration dampening, and switches between vertical and horizontal on the fly. I'm running the perch-mount version on this bike, with universal bar mount options also available. Figurati magnetic engine oil dipstick — going on right away. The Law Abiding Biker Store is the top reseller of these in North America, and for good reason: a 2,000-gauss magnet on the tip pulls ferrous metal and debris out of the oil that a filter alone won't catch, so I can pull it anytime and check what's happening inside the motor. Available in stainless steel, black, knurled, and curved styles. Exhaust — multiple options are already on the way for me to test on the PowerPlus 112, with reviews to follow. In this episode, Jason explains why onboarding and orientation can shape the entire relationship between the workforce and the project. A poor first experience creates confusion and frustration before the work even begins. Jason walks through what happens when workers arrive without clear parking, signage, restrooms, directions, communication, or a meaningful orientation. He explains how a respectful onboarding system can establish safety expectations, build trust, create connection, and help workers feel like valued members of the project instead of outsiders simply being told where to go. What you'll learn in this episode: Why a worker's first experience on the project can influence their attitude and performance. How clear signage, parking, restrooms, directions, and communication improve onboarding. Why orientation must clearly communicate safety expectations in a way workers can understand. How respectful onboarding helps build trust, participation, quality, safety, and stronger project culture. What kind of first impression is your onboarding process creating for every worker who arrives on your project? Acton University is one of the most respected gatherings in the faith-and-markets world. This year four hosts from the Christians for Liberty Network were able to find out what it was like to attend. Through a scholarship from the Foundation for Harmony and Prosperity, they spent four days at Acton University among Catholics, Calvinists, Eastern Orthodox, Jews, Muslims, and free-market thinkers from more than sixty countries, and came away deeply impressed.Doug Stuart is joined by Alex Bernardo, Cody Cook, and Kerry Baldwin to recap the experience: the core sessions, the standout speakers, the dinner-table conversations, and what it felt like to show up openly as Christian libertarians in a room that leads with virtue, stewardship, and dignity before it ever reaches policy. The short version is that it felt like being among kin. This recap walks through what Acton University gets right, where Christian libertarians found common ground, and the friendly, sharpening conversations that made the week worth every minute.Chapters:0:00 Intro0:22 Acton University Overview2:36 First Impressions of Acton5:08 Ecumenical and Marketed Faith9:16 Libertarianism Versus Libertinism15:24 Moral Language and Shared Values23:58 The Four Core Sessions30:59 Questions That Challenged43:03 Best Sessions and Standouts48:37 Receptivity to Libertarians52:51 Closing Reflections and ThanksAudio Production by Podsworth Media - https://podsworth.com Come meet fellow Christian libertarians, sharpen your thinking, and be part of a growing movement rooted in faith and freedom at the Christians for Liberty Conference.Lunch is included in the price of the ticket. Strong leaders know that facts alone rarely change minds. In this episode, Dean Newlund and Danny Bobrow explore why authentic connection comes before persuasion and how leaders can communicate in ways that earn trust, strengthen relationships, and inspire action. In this episode, Dean Newlund and Danny Bobrow discuss: Lessons from endurance sports and teamwork The Persuasion Blueprint framework Persuasion in digital and AI-assisted communication Building stronger relationships through emotional awareness Leadership communication during difficult conversations Key Takeaways: Begin difficult conversations by helping people feel understood before trying to convince them. Care and emotional attunement create the foundation for collaboration. Let enthusiasm grow by discovering what already motivates the other person instead of overwhelming them with your own excitement. In digital communication, take time to write thoughtful, respectful messages that provide context and show consideration. Before debating emotional issues, understand where someone is coming from instead of leading with facts alone. Use AI to support your thinking, but preserve authentic judgment and relationships where trust depends on your own words. "What people are really craving is to be understood, not to be impressed.” — Danny Bobrow About Danny Bobrow: Daniel A. “Danny” Bobrow is the creator of The Art of First Impressions™ and The Persuasion Blueprint™, communication mastery programs that help businesses build trust and drive ethical conversion. Michigan's Growing Pains bred and grew the Banana Taffy, entered it last minute, and beat every California grower in the Proper Smoke League.Tom and Seth of Growing Pains came up through Michigan basements, illegal caregiver traps, and the gray market years before a single license existed in the state. They built a 300-light indoor operation, bred their own genetics, and then flew to California and won. This is the full story. In this episode, JP sits down with the Proper Smoke League champions to unpack what it actually took to get here. They break down why the Banana Taffy nearly did not get entered, how harvest timing and their in-house dueling process shaped a Michigan craft cannabis operation that now competes with the best growers in the country, and what separates a craft cultivator from a production farmer in the current market. If you have ever wondered how Michigan cannabis growers stack up against California, you will have your answer by the end of the first hour.Tom tells the real GMO origin story on record for the first time: three Chem Cookies seeds popped by his buddy Billy in a Michigan basement, the corn-stalk structure that gave it the name, and why Ann Arbor dispensaries refused to sell anything called GMO and renamed it Garlic Cookies. They also get into the Motorbreath 15 history, the genetics game-changer moment that shifted Seth's entire growing approach, and what the cannabis industry loses when people consume the product wrong. This episode covers the craft, the business, and the culture that built Growing Pains from the ground up.Good PizzZa documents real cannabis culture, the growers, the breeders, the legacy operators, and the stories that do not get told anywhere else. In this episode of Evening with a Legend, we interview American endurance racer Charles Mendez about his two 24 Hours of Le Mans starts—1980 with Racing Associates in a Porsche 935 and 1981 with WM in a Peugeot P79/80—set against his broader Sebring 12 Hours legacy. Mendez recounts how promoting Sebring led to opportunities in a 935, meeting Le Mans organizers, and bringing cars overseas with little European experience. He shares first impressions of Le Mans, the realities of privateer racing, lessons from a rain-soaked 1980 retirement, and how friends helped connect him with WM for 1981 testing at Paul Ricard. Mendez details the Peugeot's quirks, high-speed Mulsanne challenges, mechanical issues during the race, why he stopped owning race cars, and his advice to young drivers: never give up and don't get cocky. Ethan Zohn Rewatches Survivor’s First Swap | Survivor Time Trip Watch the podcast on YouTube! Survivor Time Trip is back as Rob Cesternino and Mike Bloom team up with Survivor Africa winner Ethan Zohn to revisit the dramatic first-ever tribe swap in Survivor history. This episode dives headfirst into Survivor Africa (season 3), a pivotal season where alliances are shattered and the game as we know it is turned upside down. Rob and Mike press Ethan for the inside scoop on what it was really like to experience Survivor's earliest—and wildest—twist, while also catching up with Ethan's new soccer and cannabis adventure, Kicking Back. And be sure to check out the first episode of Kicking Back here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Lw9ddOYCsM The spotlight falls on the infamous tribe swap, where Ethan describes the genuine confusion and scramble to predict what the cryptic clue would mean. He relives the mid-game shock that ripped apart safe alliances, explains how his group decided who to send on the mysterious “quest,” and details the fallout for outsider Clarence. The trio also unpacks Survivor's first open discussion about throwing a challenge—how it felt for Ethan as a competitor, and why it was the key to taking out a threat like Silas. They share memories about rough camp life, staggering survival elements in Kenya, and the shift in Survivor culture from hard-working tribe dynamics to today's strategy-focused game. In this episode, Rob, Mike, and Ethan discuss: – How Survivor's original swap changed the game and surprised everyone – Ethan's conflict over throwing challenges and why it was necessary – Extreme survival: close encounters with wildlife, scarce water, and brutal elements – The importance of loyalty and ethics in old-school Survivor – Behind-the-scenes info on challenges, tiebreakers, and memorable moments from camp As season 3's game-changing twist gets its due, the group debates what lessons from Survivor Africa still echo in modern seasons. Can loyalty overcome the chaos of new twists? And would old-school survival skills make a difference in today's gameplay? Tune in to Survivor Time Trip for Ethan's untold stories, Rob and Mike's pointed questions, and an epic re-exploration of Survivor's first and most unforgettable tribe swap! Welcome to Better Merch... Better Marketing, the podcast where Kirby Hasseman and Jade Crider explore how branded merchandise and smart marketing work together to help businesses stand out, build stronger relationships, and grow. This week, Kirby kicks things off with the story behind The Bad Review Shirt—a fun reminder that sometimes the best ideas come from unexpected places. From there, the conversation turns to HYBRID Marketing, exploring why businesses see better results when they intentionally combine digital marketing with physical marketing instead of relying on just one approach. Kirby and Jade also share a quick update with listeners about taking a short break after next week's episode before diving into the main conversation. The featured discussion asks a question most businesses never consider: What happens after the first impression? Whether it's after a purchase, an interview, employee onboarding, or a trade show, those "second impression" moments often have a greater impact on customer loyalty, retention, and long-term relationships than the first interaction ever could. If you're looking for practical marketing ideas that help your business create memorable experiences long after the first handshake, this is an episode you won't want to miss.
