Fred from the Subarctic Alaska Sasquatch YouTube Channel returns to the show with two chilling reported encounters from the Alaskan wilderness, each involving a large, aggressive, humanlike creature and witnesses forced to flee under terrifying circumstances. In the first account, Timothy, an aspiring bush pilot, flies from Anchorage to Big Lake in June before continuing by floatplane to a remote pond near a friend's cabin. While hiking a ridge late in the evening — despite the lingering daylight near 11 p.m. — Timothy is overcome by an intense feeling of unease. Moments later, he sees trees violently shaking, hears guttural clicks and eerie cackling sounds, and spots a massive dark figure he estimates to be 13 to 14 feet tall. The encounter escalates when the creature appears to throw the top half of a spruce tree in his direction. Timothy fires his shotgun, then empties his .44 Magnum at what he describes as a crouched, spider-crawling mass. The figure suddenly rises to its full height, lets out a horrifying scream, and Timothy makes a desperate escape back to his floatplane. The second account comes from brothers Derek and James, who describe a frightening 1979 trip along Alaska's Snake River. While traveling through dense fog, they hear a powerful whoop and soon see a dark shape rise up into a massive bipedal form. The encounter intensifies as rocks are thrown and the creature begins making strange, motor-like imitation sounds, forcing the brothers to flee. Family members later refer to the being as a “hairy man.”.Be sure to check out Fred's incredible work on the Subarctic Alaska Sasquatch YouTube Channel by clicking the link below and exploring more of his videos.Subarctic Alaska Sasquatch YouTubeEmail BrianGet Our FREE NewsletterGet Brian's Books Leave Us A VoicemailVisit Our WebsiteBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/sasquatch-odyssey--4839697/support.Have you had a Bigfoot encounter, Sasquatch sighting, Dogman experience, or other cryptid or paranormal encounter? In the early decades of the 20th century, unions are on the rise in coal country. Those who toil beneath the dark earth balk under the yoke of the Barrow family's rule, and something must be done... It's our pleasure to introduce you to Old Gods of Appalachia! Old Gods of Appalachia is an eldritch horror fiction podcast set in an Alternate Appalachia, a world where these mountains were never meant to be inhabited. This Appalachia feels eerily similar to the hills and hollers folks remember from childhood, but there are some tell-tale differences. Towns and counties may be known by other names, or simply not exist. Historical events slide forward or backward in time. And then, of course, there are the monsters.  This is part one of our three episode introduction to Old Gods of Appalachia. This episode contains references to occult phenomena, unnatural means of reproduction, human sacrifice, ghosts, mutilation, beheading and maiming human beings, monster sounds. Sensitive listeners please be advised. Today's episode encompassed episodes 32 and 33 from season three of Old Gods. If you like what you heard, you can listen to the complete podcast — currently in its sixth season here in 2026 — on your favorite podcast app. Old Gods of Appalachia is a production of DeepNerd Media, written and produced by Cam Collins and Steve Shell and narrated by Steve Shell. Most people get their hormone levels tested once a year — if they think about it at all. Marina Pavlovic Rivas, Co-Founder & CEO of Eli Health, is on a mission to change that.  Ramon Vela sits down with Marina for a fascinating conversation about the technology she spent nearly seven years building: a saliva-based, at-home hormone monitoring platform that delivers cortisol, testosterone, and progesterone results to your phone in minutes, giving people real-time visibility into one of the most overlooked dimensions of their health. * The gap nobody was solving. After searching online for a way to track her own hormonal data, Marina realized the product didn't exist. So she built it, spending more than six years on R&D, regulatory approval, and venture capital before bringing it to market. * Hormones affect everything, not just fertility. From energy and mood to sleep, libido, bone health, cardiac health, and cognitive performance, Marina breaks down why hormonal data is one of the most important and most underused signals in personal wellness. * The wearable parallel that puts it all in context. Checking your hormones once a year is like measuring your heartbeat once a year: technically useful, but dangerously incomplete. Eli Health gives users the same continuous feedback loop that smartwatches brought to sleep and heart rate. * A six-second saliva test. Results in 20 minutes. Users collect saliva, wait 20 minutes, then photograph the test to receive results directly in the app. Repeat over time and you build a hormonal picture that no annual blood draw could ever provide. * Cortisol first, for good reason. Eli launched with cortisol because it sits at the top of the hormonal cascade. When cortisol is off, everything else follows. Testosterone and progesterone, including their interactions, are coming next. Join us in listening to this episode for a genuinely eye-opening conversation about hormonal health, the future of at-home diagnostics, and what it means to build a category that didn't exist before you created it.  Whether you're a health-conscious consumer, a founder, or someone who just wants to understand what their body is actually telling them, this one is for you.  Visit: https://eli.health/ Try their Instant Cortisol Test: https://eli.health/products/cortisol?view=sl-44128C61 If you enjoyed this episode, please leave The Story of a Brand Show a rating and review.  Plus, don't forget to follow us on Apple and Spotify.  Your support helps us bring you more content like this! * Today's Sponsors: Saral - The Influencer OS: https://www.getsaral.com/demo SARAL is the all-in-one influencer platform that finds brand-aligned creators, automates outreach, and manages everything in one place. What if the reason your coaching business feels exhausting… is because it's built the wrong way? In this episode of the Story Engine Podcast, I sit down with Christie Ruffino to unpack how coaches, speakers, and authors can escape the chaos of low-ticket offers, endless content creation, and "shiny object syndrome" — and instead build scalable, high-ticket programs that deliver real results. Christie shares her proven framework for turning your expertise into a profitable, freedom-based business using strategic offers, risk-reversal guarantees, and books as powerful lead-generation tools (not just credibility pieces). You'll also hear her raw journey from overworked single mom grinding through 10+ hour days… to creating a business that supports her lifestyle, her family, and her freedom. If you're ready to stop spinning your wheels and start building something sustainable, this episode will show you how. In This Episode 01:27 – Christie's Background & Mission From publishing expert to helping coaches leverage books for impact and income. 02:21 – Why Most Books Don't Make Money The myth of "build it and they will come" — and why a book alone won't grow your business. 03:45 – The Right Way to Use a Book as a Lead Generator How to position your book as a funnel that attracts ideal high-ticket clients. 05:06 – What High-Ticket Clients Actually Want Why they don't care about reading your book — and what they do want instead. 06:40 – Building a Real High-Ticket Offer The biggest mistake coaches make (starting too small) and how to position yourself as an expert faster. 08:36 – The Power of Guarantees in Coaching Programs How risk-reversal builds trust, improves conversions, and ensures real client results. 10:02 – Screening vs Selling Why the best high-ticket models focus on qualifying clients instead of convincing them. 11:28 – The "Busy & Broke" Entrepreneur Trap Content overload, shiny objects, and why the ascension model leads to burnout. 13:27 – Christie's Unique Framework Risk-reversal offers, done-for-you components, and structured group coaching systems. 16:19 – Done-For-You vs Done-With-You Support How to design offers that maximize results without draining your time. 17:26 – Christie's Breaking Point Working 10–12 hour days as a single mom, overwhelmed and stuck in the hustle cycle. 20:08 – The Emotional Cost of Busyness The hidden guilt and pressure of trying to provide while feeling absent at home. 22:17 – The Turning Point: High-Ticket Transformation Moving from chaos to clarity — and finally building a business that works. 24:32 – Freedom, Travel, and Lifestyle by Design Choosing how to work, where to work, and creating space for life again. 25:15 – Christie's Story, Reframed A powerful narrative transformation illustrating her full journey and impact. 30:19 – Where to Learn More & Final Thoughts Christie shares resources and reflects on the power of storytelling in business.

"This is a cautionary tale about how extremism and fascism can creep up on us. It always begins with hate speech and dehumanization... from verbal violence, it's a very short leap to physical violence." — Dr. Georgette Bennett ABOUT THIS EPISODE Dr. Georgette Bennett is an award-winning sociologist, widely published author, former NBC News correspondent, and founder of both the Tanenbaum Center for Inter-Religious Understanding and the Multifaith Alliance for Syrian Refugees — which has mobilized more than $660 million in humanitarian aid. Her latest book, Half Jew, Full Life, tells the extraordinary story of Holocaust survivor Gary "Pips" Phillips, a distant relative who became a surrogate father to Georgette after her own father's death. Pips was classified by the Nazis as a Mischling — half-Jewish — yet voluntarily embraced his Jewish identity at the very moment it could be fatal. Mike and Georgette discuss Pips's four arrests and three escapes, the Nazis who unexpectedly saved his life, the challenge of writing a third-person memoir from psychiatric recordings, and why this story carries urgent lessons about identity, denial, and the creep of extremism. KEY TAKEAWAYS 1. A Holocaust story unlike any other. Pips was a Mischling first degree — an Aryan mother, a Jewish father — who voluntarily chose to be Jewish by becoming a bar mitzvah the very week the Nuremberg Laws were enacted. Almost nothing has been written about people in this category. 2. Nazis both persecuted and saved him. Pips was arrested four times and escaped three times. In key moments, individual Nazis — motivated by love, lust, or personal connection — intervened to save his life, complicating the black-and-white narrative of the Holocaust. 3. Survival was his career. Living underground in Berlin among 6,500 Jews who went into hiding, Pips navigated a world where you couldn't buy food or rent a room without papers stamped with a "J." Every day was a question of where to eat and where to sleep. 4. Psychiatric tapes became the primary source. Pips recorded his life story across dozens of sessions with his psychiatrist. Georgette had them transcribed while he was still alive, giving the book an authentic first-person voice despite being written in third person. 5. Trauma never fully heals. Pips's wife Olga, an Auschwitz survivor, processed her experience through silence and ultimately took her own life in 2005. Pips's own trauma surfaced decades later as severe palpitations with no physical cause. 6. Identity is a lifelong negotiation. Pips spent his entire life seeking acceptance as a Jew despite never formally converting. The title Half Jew, Full Life comes from his own declaration: "I don't want to be a half Jew. I want to be a full Jew." 7. A cautionary tale for today. The book traces how extremism begins with hate speech and dehumanization, and how denial during that phase allows violence to escalate — a pattern Georgette sees playing out in the present day. 8. The American Dream, chapter two. After the war, Pips arrived in America as a waiter and bicycle messenger and ended up co-owning the largest photo agency in the world, hobnobbing with celebrities like Natalie Wood and Raquel Welch — never having owned a camera. When a teen is in crisis, the behavior is not the whole message. In this conversation, I talk with Katie May about what she calls "fire feelers," kids and teens who are biologically sensitive, highly reactive, and slow to return to baseline once emotions get big. Katie explains how these kids often grow up hearing some version of "you're fine" when they are very much not fine, and how that repeated mismatch can teach them to distrust their own internal experience. We talk about why self-destructive behavior is often an attempt to make overwhelming emotion stop, and why behavior has to be understood as communication before it can really change. We also get into one of the most important parts of the episode for me: what happens to parents when things escalate. Katie talks about the shame and blame cycle, the grief that sits underneath so much of that, and why parents need their own support if they are going to stay steady in the middle of a crisis. We unpack the revolving door of hospitalization, what keeps families stuck there, and why healing is not about making all the stress disappear. It is about learning how to live inside a life that is hard and still build something meaningful, connected, and hopeful. Key Takeaways Some kids are biologically more sensitive. They feel emotions intensely, react quickly, and take longer to calm back down. Katie calls these kids "fire feelers." Repeated dismissal teaches kids to doubt themselves. When a child keeps hearing "you're fine" while feeling overwhelmed, they may start to believe their own internal signals are wrong. Self-destructive behavior is often a solution, not just a problem. It may be an impulsive attempt to make unbearable emotion go away fast. Behavior is communication. If the outside looks chaotic, there is usually something painful and dysregulated happening on the inside. Validation is not approval. It is a way of saying, "I see how hard this is for you," without reinforcing harmful behavior. Parents do not need a perfect script. Sometimes the right response is words, and sometimes it is simply staying present without minimizing what the teen is feeling. Beneath blame and shame, there is often grief. Parents are grieving the gap between the life they imagined and the life they are actually living. You cannot just remove a coping strategy without building something else. If a behavior is serving a survival function, there has to be a different way for that person to get through the day. The hospitalization cycle can become its own trap. Parents and clinicians feel temporary relief, but the teen often comes back to the same triggers without enough targeted support. Parents need real support too. This is heavy, isolating work, and families need spaces where they can talk honestly without being judged or panicked at. About Katie May Katie K. May is a licensed therapist, author, speaker, and group practice owner. She founded Creative Healing, a multi-location teen support center in the Philadelphia area, and wrote the #1 Amazon best-seller You're On Fire, It's Fine. With lived experience as a teen who turned to self-harm, Katie is one of only 11 Linehan Board Certified DBT Clinicians in Pennsylvania, the gold standard treatment for self-harm and suicidal behaviors. In 1956, Italy's most opulent ocean liner went down off Nantucket after a head-on collision in the fog, taking 46 lives and earning a place among the worst maritime disasters in history. But the dying didn't stop there — in the seven decades since, the wreck dubbed the "Mt. Everest of Wreck Diving" has claimed roughly 18 more souls, swallowing the divers drawn to its depths and feeding whispers that something down there is cursed.EPISODE BLOG PAGE (includes sources and full transcript): https://weirddarkness.com/andreadoriaFEATURED STORIES IN THIS EPISODE: Movies like Shaun of the Dead, Night of the Living Dead, World War Z, and TV shows like The Walking Dead, have made the subject of zombies a fairly popular topic over recent years. And while we all know these undead creatures are purely make-believe, the idea of the zombie has been around for thousands of years… and in the Voodoo culture, they've found a way to make zombies a real, horrifying thing. (The Disturbing Truth Behind Voodoo Zombies) *** In July of 1956, the SS Andrea Doria collided with another ship and quickly sank to the bottom of the ocean. Today it is a tourist destination for brave divers who not only want to see something hauntingly beautiful, but who also dare to investigate a wreck that has been deemed by many to be cursed – and for good reason. (The Cursed Remains of the SS Andrea Doria) *** Paranormal author and researcher G. Michael Vasey tells of a personal incident that took place recently where he saw what could be described as a “peripheral person”. (Peripheral People) *** Sir Clive Sinclair might have been a man ahead of his time. The late inventor created all manner of strange and wonderful gadgets – most of which you've likely never heard of. But that doesn't mean you can say they were failures. (The Inventor of Weird Contraptions) *** If the legends are to believed, you'll want to avoid driving down Nan Tucks Lane in East Sussex - unless you don't mind coming into contact with a vengeful ghost. (The Witch of Nan Tucks Lane) *** Where in the bible do we see the story of fallen angels sleeping with women to produce a breed of giants? Most would point to the book of Genesis – but in the unincluded book of Enoch, it tells a more-detailed account, worthy of a horror movie. (The Story of Giants and Fallen Angels) *** Some people collect baseball cards, others coins, and others Pokemon. There's no telling what someone might find enough of an interest in to begin collecting. And collecting books is one of the most common – but when your collecting becomes a compulsion and you can't stop yourself, it can get out of hand. Just ask Thomas Phillipps… the man who was addicted to books… to an extreme level. What makes a story feel truly mythic? Many writers assume mythic fiction comes from borrowing archetypes, retelling old myths, or layering symbolic imagery into a story. While there is immense value in studying mythology, fairy tales, folklore, and archetypal storytelling traditions, something important has been lost in many modern conversations about mythic fiction. The old myths aren't powerful merely because of their plot structure or symbolism. They are powerful because they emerged from their creator's living relationship with symbol, transformation, mystery, dream, and the deeper psyche. In this episode, I explore: •    Why so much modern "mythic storytelling" can feel strangely hollow  •    The difference between inherited myth and living myth  •    Why writers often approach archetypes from the outside in  •    How mythic resonance actually emerges in story  •    Why mythic storytelling matters during times of cultural transformation  •    How writers can reconnect to the symbolic imagination itself  What if the role of the writer is not simply to preserve mythology, but to participate in it? If you've ever wanted to write stories that feel more resonant, symbolic, emotionally alive, or spiritually meaningful, this episode explores the deeper source from which mythic fiction arises. 02:45 How Modern Writers Understand Mythic Fiction and Archetypal Storytelling 03:58 The Mythological and Folk Tale Lens for Mythic Fiction 04:32 The Anthropological & Psychological Lens for Mythic Fiction 05:10 Pop Culture & the Mythic Retelling 06:27 Studying Myth vs. Writing Mythic Fiction 09:03 Borrowing vs. Accessing Symbols 11:17 Inherited Myth vs. Living Myth 12:16 Mythic Fiction in Cultural Times of Transformation 13:43 Our Relationship to the Old Stories Grows Thin 14:55 Mythic Fiction Requires the Partnership of Intuition and Intellect 16:11 Mythic Fiction Reconnects Writers to the Deep Source of Story 18:38 The Need for New Myths in a Changing World 20:15 New Myths, Ancient Roots 21:15 Participating in Myth as Much as Preserving It 21:59 Reconnecting to Myth in Your Own Writing Process Read the transcript: https://helpingwritersbecomeauthors.com/how-to-write-mythic-fiction LINKS & RESOURCES Want More? This conversation connects deeply to my class Alchemizing Plot, Character, & Theme: https://kmweilandstore.com/b/plot-character-theme-class In this masterclass, I explore how plot, character, and theme act as one cohesive symbolic structure capable of creating stories with emotional resonance, narrative momentum, and deeper thematic meaning. We'll talk about: •    Aligning inner and outer arcs  •    Creating stories that feel alive from the inside out  •    Integrating plot, character, and theme organically  •    Writing stories with greater depth and cohesion

Dr. Laura Sicola reveals why expertise alone won't get you heard — and the 3 Cs that turn knowledge into leadership influence. You've mastered your subject. You know your material cold. So why does the room glaze over when the stakes are highest? Cognitive linguist, executive coach, and author Dr. Laura Sicola says the gap isn't your expertise — it's the three inches between your brain and your mouth. In this episode of the Business of Story, she shares the framework that's helped Fortune 500 executives at Amazon and Kaiser Permanente stop sounding like spreadsheets and start commanding every room they walk into. Her TEDx Talk, "Want to Sound Like a Leader? Start by Saying Your Name Right," has nearly 7 million views — because the problem is universal and the fix is counterintuitive. WHAT YOU'LL DISCOVER IN THIS EPISODE The 3 Cs of Executive Presence: Command the Room, Connect with Your Audience, and Close the Deal — and why each requires a completely different skill  Why the movie playing in your head is never the movie your audience is watching — and how to close that gap before it costs you the deal  The neuroscience of humor: why a well-placed laugh creates dopamine, builds trust, and makes you more persuasive without sacrificing credibility  How to use Chris Voss's "labeling" technique to stay curious when conversations get triggered and defensive  The one counterintuitive move that makes you sound smarter, more likable, and more relatable — all at the same time ABOUT DR. What if the stories you've dismissed as “not important enough” are actually the ones your audience needs most?Erin Mark and I explore why storytelling is the bridge between expertise and transformation and why audiences connect far more deeply with emotion, struggle, and humanity than with information alone. Erin shares how she took her deeply personal experience living with cystic fibrosis and transformed it into a keynote message about resilience, uncertainty, identity, and moving forward through change. We also talk about the surprising challenge many women face: not recognizing the power of their own stories because they've lived with them for so long.In this episode, we discuss:How to “universalize” your personal story so others see themselves in itWhy many women struggle to identify their most impactful storiesErin's “Story, Struggle, Solution” frameworkHow coaches can help uncover stories and themes you can't always see yourselfWhy you do not need a dramatic life story to become a compelling speakerHow storytelling can improve podcast interviews, presentations, and thought leadershipThe importance of becoming the messenger your audience needs at exactly the right momentWe also share details about our new Story Scoping coaching package and our upcoming in-person workshop in Orlando!About My Guest: At 35, Erin's life was coming to an end. She had entered end life stage cystic fibrosis: her lungs were failing, she was dying, and time was running out. While most people were training for their next promotion or milestone, she was training to die. And then, at the very last moment, everything changed – a breakthrough medication saved her life. That moment forced Erin into her most important pivot yet: learning how to live again. Her identity had been built around survival. Now, she had to rebuild her purpose, reshape her career, and discover what it meant to truly live. What she discovered is this: pivoting isn't a one-time act, it's a repeatable skill. Whether it's a reorg, a layoff, a leadership shift, or a personal loss, every “before and after” moment is a pivot point and it requires a new kind of leadership. Perfect for corporate teams, associations, and leadership conferences, Erin's keynotes are more than inspiration. They're a mindset reset and a tactical playbook for anyone navigating change or facing an uncertain next chapter.About Us: The Speaking Your Brand podcast is hosted by Carol Cox. Yesterday I was sitting with an intern — three businesses, three sets of financials, three different industries spread out in front of us. Restaurants. Retail. Travel. Profit & Loss statements, balance sheets. And we're just digging in.   I asked her if any of this was the same as what she's learning in school. She looked at me and said, "God, no."   That answer stayed with me.   Because here's what we were really doing — we weren't just running numbers. We were reading a story. Food sales were up, but food cost shot up even more. Dairy up. Produce up. Meat down. Weather impacts. Fuel. All of it showing up in the space between the notes. Which is exactly what someone told me years ago when I was studying piano — the music lives in the space between the notes, not just the notes themselves.   Your business is the same way. The numbers, the foot traffic, the team dynamics, the cashflow rhythm — it's all telling you something. The question is whether you're willing to open your eyes, your ears, and your heart enough to hear it.   This episode is built around three things I walked that intern through — the same three things I come back to every time I'm in the weeds with a business. Story. Rhythm. Consistency. Not a cookie-cutter method someone handed you. A framework you build on your own terms, from the inside out.   If your business feels like it's whispering and you keep talking over it — this one's for you.   Key Takeaways: • Your numbers aren't just data — they're a story. Dairy up, produce up, meat down, weather impacts: every detail is a sentence in the chapter your business is trying to hand you. • The space between the notes is where the real information lives. Don't just read the headline metrics. Read what's in between them. • AI is most powerful when you already know what story you're trying to understand. Use it to interpret, not just to process. • Finding your rhythm with your team builds the bridge between the people running the business and the people making the results happen. Rhythm first. Flow follows. • Consistency is what creates congruency. When everyone's plating the dish the same way, running lineup notes the same way, showing up to meetings the same way — that's how alignment actually gets built. • Flow isn't something you chase. It's something you fall into when the story, the rhythm, and the consistency are all working together. • You're not following a cookie-cutter path. You're carving your own — and that only happens when you listen to what your business is actually trying to tell you.   Timestamps / Chapter Markers: 00:02   A mentoring session and three sets of financials on the table 00:45   What they were actually looking at — P&Ls and balance sheets 01:20   The real question: what do these numbers mean for how we run the business? 02:24   Three businesses, three industries: restaurants, retail, travel — and the nuances between them 03:00   Prime cost, table turns, GMROI — the metrics that are different by industry 03:45   The intern's answer: "God, no" — she's learning way more here than in school 04:10   The story starts to surface: food sales up, food cost up even more — what happened? 04:37   Dairy up, produce up, meat down — the nitty-gritty details that add up to a chapter 05:10   The piano lesson: the music lives in the space between the notes 05:45   Reading between the lines — how to hear what the numbers are actually communicating 06:15   The 360-degree view: why the story matters as much as the spreadsheet 07:02   Point One — your whole business is telling you a story 07:30   Broken processes, wrong people, ordering waste — the story reveals it all if you're willing to look 08:00   AI as a creative partner — using it to interpret the story, not just process tasks 08:30   What opens up when you stop checking boxes and start listening 09:00   Story leads to creative solutions — the customer experience, the business moving forward 09:24   Point Two — finding your rhythm 09:50   Rhythm with your team builds the bridge between leaders and the people creating results 10:15   Rhythm in cashflow — what does the weekly pattern actually look like? 10:40   Rhythm in numbers, processes, foot traffic, marketing, projects — it's all connected 11:05   Rhythm leads to flow. Flow is alignment. Flow is elevated thinking and elevated creativity. 11:20   Point Three — consistency 11:35   Consistency → congruency → alignment: plating food, running lineup notes, showing up the same way every time 11:49   The close: your business, your numbers, your heart — all telling you a story. Are you listening? 12:10   Carving your own path — on your own terms, not someone else's cookie-cutter method   If this episode hit — if you've been running your business and you know, somewhere underneath it all, that you haven't really been listening to the story it's trying to tell you — share this one. Send it to the founder who's buried in spreadsheets but can't figure out why nothing is moving. Send it to the leader who's grinding through a checklist but feels like something's off.   Hit follow so you don't miss the next one. And if you've been listening for a while and this show has been valuable to you, a review means more than you know — it helps more founders like you find their way here.   READY TO UNCOVER THE BLIND SPOT HURTING YOUR SMALL BUSINESS?

When the Nervous System Rewrites Reality: Emotional Flashbacks and CPTSD

    Illuminated with Jennifer Wallace

You are not overreacting. Your nervous system is not broken. It is doing exactly what it learned to do in environments where threat was the norm. In this episode, Jennifer Wallace and Elisabeth Kristof close out Season Five with one of the most important and least understood concepts in complex trauma: emotional flashbacks. Not the cinematic kind, not a sudden memory of a specific event, but the quiet, whole-system state shift that can color an entire day, week, or month in dread, loneliness, shame, and the bone-deep certainty that nothing will ever be okay. The episode opens with a reframe that changes everything: an emotional flashback is not a regression to the past. It is a real-time nervous system state that reorganizes how the brain filters reality. Perception shifts. Interpretation shifts. What feels possible shifts. And because it happens at the level of the whole predictive network, not just a single memory, it does not feel like the past. It feels like now. It feels like truth. Elisabeth and Jennifer trace exactly how this works through the lens of neuro somatic intelligence, constructed emotion theory, and the science of predictive processing. They explain what neuro tags are and how they get activated, why the amygdala hijack model is outdated and what a more accurate understanding of emotional flashbacks actually looks like, and why calling these states irrational or disordered misses the point entirely. The nervous system is not malfunctioning. It is preparing for threat based on what it has reliably learned to expect. Both hosts share vivid and honest personal examples. Elisabeth describes a recent subtle flashback triggered by being sick, underresourced, and feeling unsupported by her partner, and how quickly the narrative spread to her business, her relationships, and her sense of being completely alone. Jennifer shares the story of a red hummingbird feeder in her backyard that unlocked an entire somatic memory of loneliness and isolation she had not yet consciously connected to childhood. The episode also addresses something practitioners often ask about: how to tell the difference between emotional dysregulation that needs regulating, and an emotion that needs to be felt and moved through. The answer is not a clean line but a question of capacity, flexibility, and what the nervous system can hold in that moment. This is the final episode of Season Five and a natural bridge into Season Six, where Jennifer and Elisabeth will be expanding the lens from individual healing to collective nervous system dynamics, cultural structures, and what becomes possible when this work moves beyond the personal. Enhanced Games Debut in Las Vegas as the First Openly Drug-Enabled "Biohacker Olympics" The inaugural Enhanced Games took place in Las Vegas with more than 40 elite athletes competing openly while using performance-enhancing drugs, a $25 million prize pool, and a $1 million world record bonus on the table. Host Dave Asprey, who serves on the advisory board of the Enhanced Games, breaks down why this event is less a sports story than a cultural signal: enhancement has moved from underground to prime time, and the institutions that spent decades controlling that conversation through drug testing and bans watched it happen on a stage in Las Vegas. Dave explains why WADA has always existed to protect institutions rather than athletes, why bodily sovereignty is the real issue at the center of this debate, and what it means that even with full transparency about what every athlete was taking, the records didn't fall quite the way you'd expect. The Enhanced Games are the closest thing yet to a public beta test for extreme human enhancement, and the data it generates will matter far beyond sport. Host Dave Asprey breaks down the biology of what happens when the immune system stops containing an infection and starts attacking the body systemwide, why sepsis can escalate from manageable symptoms to a life-threatening emergency faster than most people expect, and why even someone with great biomarkers and a dialed-in health stack can be blindsided by an acute inflammatory crisis. The warning signs matter: worsening breathing, confusion, rapid decline, and a sense that something is badly wrong are emergency symptoms, not signals to wait and see. Longevity is not only about optimization rituals. It includes knowing when your biology is in crisis and acting before the window closes. When Menin declined, aging accelerated. When researchers restored it in older mice, memory improved and lifespan increased. Host Dave Asprey explains why this finding challenges the dominant wear-and-tear model of aging, what it means that the hypothalamus may be running a coordinated aging program rather than simply accumulating damage over time, and why a control-room model of aging points toward fundamentally different intervention strategies than chasing downstream symptoms like fatigue and memory loss. The research connects aging to neuroinflammation, which has direct implications for how biohackers think about hypothalamic health right now. It is still animal research, but the mechanistic case is strong and the implications for longevity science are significant. Host Dave Asprey breaks down why this result reframes depression as an immune biology problem for a meaningful subset of patients rather than a purely neurochemical one, and why the same inflammatory pathway that drives joint destruction in rheumatoid arthritis is showing up in the brains of people who don't respond to antidepressants. The practical implication is not to seek out a biologic drug off-label. It is to recognize that persistent low mood, fatigue, and low resilience may warrant a deeper biological workup than standard screening provides, starting with IL-6, CRP, and a full inflammatory panel. The brain is downstream of the immune system more than most psychiatry has been willing to admit, and this trial is the clearest evidence yet of why that matters. Host Dave Asprey explains why this finding is liberating rather than deterministic, what it means that genetics loads the dice on lifespan more than the mainstream has been willing to admit, and why personalized longevity strategy matters far more than generic population-level advice. Your genes load the dice but you still roll them. The study pushes the field toward genetic stratification and biomarker-based personalization, and it validates the core premise that the same intervention will not produce the same outcome in every person. Get your genetics tested and build your strategy from your own baseline, not from what worked for the average person in a study. Host Dave Asprey connects emerging clinical research, real-world performance culture, and actionable optimization frameworks into a clear picture of where biology actually drives outcomes and where most people are still managing symptoms instead of finding the mechanism.
