In this video, I explore the power of reconnecting with our roots—honoring the land, the traditions, and the sacred images that shaped those who came before us.I'll share three key ways to start unlocking the healing wisdom of your lineage:1. Inquiry – Asking questions, seeking out family stories, and researching your heritage.2. Iconography – Discovering the symbols, plants, and figures that held meaning for your ancestors.3. Rituals – Embracing ancestral foods, seasonal practices, and creative handiwork.I'll also share my own journey of diving into my Sicilian and Lithuanian roots and how this process has brought me deeper peace and meaning. Psychoanalysis On and Off the Couch
An Analyst's Hindu-Indian Imagination with Sudhir Kakar (Goa, India)

My conversation with Sudhir Kakar took place five weeks before his untimely death on April 22nd.  “Freud obviously is very brave and courageous to accept that the world is inadequate and that my desires will never be sufficiently fulfilled. My question - is this in fact the case? I think that everyone has had some kind of spiritual experience, some more than others and in many different contexts, not just religious ones. Spiritual experiences contradict Freud's notion of common unhappiness and the idea of the world as inadequate. What reason do we have to assume that all such common experiences are simply false, that they are based on some kind of false consciousness? Rather, I believe that the inadequacy lies in our own awareness rather than with the world. The world allows for many experiences that would be highly adequate yet we block them - what we call the mundane world is much more enchanted than we think it is."    Episode Description: We begin by considering the embodiment of one's cultural imagination - "one's mental representation of culture" - into one's unconscious mind. Sudhir describes different early child-rearing practices and invites the question about their influence on our later inner lives. He shares with us his early idealization of Freudian/Western ways of thinking and his later development, which returned to the enchanting aspects of his Hindu youth. We discuss the similarities and differences between a Judeo-Christian-based psychoanalysis and one founded on a Hindu imagination. We consider the different notions of God, ritual, and illusion. He distinguishes an 'autonomous person' from a 'communitarian person' and describes the pleasures and burdens of each. We close with his sharing his lovely psychoanalytic origin story connected to his meeting Erik Erikson and discovering "I want to be like him."   Our Guest: Sudhir Kakar was a psychoanalyst, scholar, and writer. He had been a Lecturer and Visiting Professor at Harvard University, Visiting Professor at the Universities of Chicago, McGill, Melbourne, Hawaii, and Vienna, Fellow at the Institutes of Advanced Study, Princeton, Berlin, and Cologne, and was on the board of Freud Archives. He had received the Kardiner Award of Columbia University, Boyer Prize for Psychological Anthropology of the American Anthropological Association, Germany's Goethe Medal, Tagore-Merck Award, McArthur Research Fellowship, and Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany. `As ‘the psychoanalyst of civilizations', the French weekly Le Nouvel Observateur listed Kakar in 2005 as one of the world's 25 major thinkers. Sudhir was the author/editor of 20 books of non-fiction and six novels. His books have been translated into 22 languages.   Recommended Readings: Kakar, Sudhir - The Indian Jungle: Psychoanalysis and Non-Western Civilizations, Karnac. For more than three months, residents in south Plaquemines Parish didn't have safe drinking water. The cause? Intruding salt water from the Gulf of Mexico caused by two years of back-to-back drought. When news broke of approaching salt water in more populous areas further up the river, state and local officials took immediate action. Today, the Coastal Desk's Halle Parker reports on the residents in Plaquemines who felt forgotten.  The Louisiana Book Festival is returning to Baton Rouge at the end of the month. Two of this year's featured authors are Mary Perrin and Beverly Fuselier, the authors of, “Healing Traditions of South Louisiana, prayers, plants, and poultices.”  Perrin and Fuselier released the book one year ago this month. They dig into health and wellness traditions of Louisiana's Cajun, Creole and Native American communities. Today, they join us for more on the history of community healers — known as “traiteurs” — and the modern influence of ancient healing techniques.  Internationally renowned Complexions Contemporary Ballet co-founder and choreographer Dwight Rhoden and six-time Grammy-nominated Jazz trumpeter and composer Chief Adjuah, formerly Christian Scott, are joining forces for a special season-opening performance with the New Orleans Ballet Association. Dwight Rhoden joins us for more on this upcoming performance, which features contemporary movement and the music of Lenny Kravitz. Today's episode of Louisiana Considered was hosted by Diane Mack. It's time to expand the definition of “medicine”. Healed people, heal people.Welcome back, dear HMA listeners!Join us as we immerse ourselves in the captivating world of curanderismo.Curanderismo is a form of traditional medicine that has its roots in the indigenous cultures of Latin America and has been passed down from generation to generation. It combines elements of herbal medicine, spirituality and energy healing to treat a variety of physical and emotional ailments. One of the most interesting aspects of curanderismo is its holistic approach. Healers believe that body, mind, and spirit are intrinsically connected, and that illness or imbalance in one of these aspects can affect the others. Panquetzani honors the over 4,000-year-old traditions of her foremothers and integrates her 16 years of study into her practice. She comes from a matriarchal family of folk healers, growing up with bedtime stories of magic, miracles, and deep transformation. These impactful narratives have led Panquetzani to believe that all people have innate wisdom that can revolutionize their well-being and that of their families. As a holistic womb counselor, complete wellness coach, traditional birth attendant, and foundress of Indigemama: Ancestral Healing, her goal is to support, educate, inspire, and gently guide her clients and students. In this conversation, Panquetzani and I explore the profound impact of traditional Mexican healing stories on her work, how colonialism tragically disrupted and eroded ancestral healing practices and wisdom across cultures, the current resurgence of traditional medicine, and the stark differences between mainstream health and Panquetzani's unique approach, which is grounded in ancestral wisdom and guided by a holistic perspective. To learn more, visit https://nicolejardim.com/podcasts/honoring-and-preserving-ancestral-wisdom-healing-traditions-panquetzani-of-indigemama/.Podcast Production Support: Amazing Gains | https://listenerstoclients.com

Our guests are Mary Broussard Perrin and Beverly Constantine Fuselier, authors of Healing Traditions of South Louisiana. Their book provides a fascinating history of South Louisiana's traditional healing arts from the dawn of civilization to today. Part One is about traiteurs (male) and traiteuses (female), their prayers, and rituals. Part Two presents the native medicinal plants that grow wild in South Louisiana, their properties and their traditional uses. Mary and Beverly are traiteurs who treat whatever is ailing you, such as back pain, wounds, warts, anxiety, sunstroke, etc. Traiteurs work with healing plants, occasionally “making medicine” when needed. And Mary and Beverly are dedicated….right before we began taping, they worked all morning at the Healing Garden at Vermilionville! Pictured is La Maison du Traiteur ("The Healer's House) at Vermilionville, surrounded by Le Jardin du Traiteur (The Healer's Garden), sponsored by the Lafayette Parish Master Gardeners Association (LPMGA). The site is open for tourists to visit all year. Mary Perrin recommends the best time to visit is on one of the Culture Days held during the summertime where you will enjoy a guided tour. To view the complete garden guide, visit here. Healing Traditions is a beautiful testament to our Acadian culture and the traditions that have been carried down by one generation after another. It is also a beautiful testament to the Native Americans who first arrived in South Louisiana more than a thousand years before European settlers, who had discovered "a rich diversity of plant and animal life in its bayous, prairies, and marshes....they uncovered a multitude of powerful natural curatives, plants that could stop bleeding, cure infections, relieve pain, reduce fever, stop swelling, soothe troubled minds, and more. In short, Mother Nature's medicine cabinet was well stocked." These generous Native Americans shared their plant curative knowledge with the Acadians' traiteurs as they settled into their new home in South Louisiana. According to Healing Traditions of South Louisiana, Elderberry was "revered for its medical and reputed magical qualities" and the Acadians and Native Americans considered it vital to their medical needs. It is considered to be the "queen of the Healer's Garden." The book is a beautifully written account of local healing herbs and the healing touch and prayer of traiteurs. A beautiful gift to give, Discover Lafayette thanks Mary Perrin and Beverly Fuselier for the time and talent they invested to make Healing Traditions a reality! Healing Traditions of South Louisiana is available for purchase at Beausoleil Books, Vermilionville, the Acadian Museum of Erath, Books Along the Teche, and Longfellow State Historic Site.

I guess you might call them faith healers, but they are more than that description because they often rely on certain herbs and plants, as well as handed-down prayer and sometimes even a gentle touch to heal certain maladies. They have long been a part of Cajun culture especially in rural areas away from standard medical treatment. Mary Perrin and Bev Fusel, two traiteuses (the female equivalent of “traiteurs”) from the Lafayette area, and the authors of a newly published book "Healing Traditions of South Louisiana, prayers, plants and poultices" join Louisiana Life Executive Editor Errol Laborde, along with podcast producer Kelly Massicot to talk about what maladies are best treated by traiteurs and why. Oh yes, we will also hear about the power of elderberries.

Native Americans in professional healing professions may creatively incorporate Native ways in their work, but the path is not easy.  The same is true for those coming from a Western background that realize there is something lacking in modern medicine and are attracted to Native ways of healing. Western and Native approaches to healing may seem incompatible—linear-mechanical, biological or genetic causes versus interdependent, community and natural world imbalances—but there is a way to integrate them, to see and walk in two worlds. Not easily and not without pushback perhaps, but there is a way. Our two guests, one Native, one non-Native, have both been powerfully influenced and transformed by Indigenous wisdom and also other ways of knowing and have done the work to integrate and implement a more holistic vision of medicine. Many dismiss traditional healing as being unscientific or superstitious, while others overly romanticize these healing modalities dismissing much that modern medicine has to offer. However, according to Phil Borges, Documentary Photographer/Filmmaker of: Enduring Spirit, Tibet: Culture On The Edge and CRAZYWISE, the value of my guest today, Marie-Rose Phan-Lê’s perspective is that her feet are planted in both the modern and traditional worldviews. He continued to state: Talking Story is a wonderful Bridge that spans across many cultures presenting an expanded view of healing and wellbeing. Marie-Rose Phan-Lê has more than twenty years’ experience in film and television production (Northern Exposure, Prefontaine, Ace’s High). She is the founder and president of Healing Planet Project, a nonprofit organization dedicated to the preservation and presentation of ancient healing and spiritual traditions. Marie-Rose has traveled extensively for various projects, including her award-winning documentary film, Talking Story, a companion to her book Talking Story. She has transitioned her flourishing healing practice working one-to-one with individuals to focusing on the one-to-many, consulting with organizations, businesses, and other groups. She is currently the chief operating officer and creative director at High Impact Inc.
