How long can the current sports card market keep going up, and what could finally bring it back down? In Part 5 of our Sports Cards Live conversation, we look ahead at the next six months and ask whether the hobby's current momentum is sustainable, whether a correction is inevitable, and what could potentially trigger it. Could an MLB work stoppage ripple through the hobby? Could a broader recession force collectors to sell? What happens when the biggest buyers finally reach the limits of their budgets? And could a major grading scandal create an entirely different kind of disruption? Chris McGill breaks down the hobby's "capital ecosystem" and explains why he's watching where new money is coming from, who's spending it, and what happens when that capital stops expanding and begins rotating instead. Then, during the show, breaking news: the controversial restored and reconstructed T206 Honus Wagner closes at Love of the Game for approximately $1.336 million including buyer's premium. Was that a strong result for a dramatically restored Wagner, or an underwhelming one given the attention surrounding the card? From there, the conversation gets heated. Gary Vaynerchuk's recent comments about vintage fictional and non-sports cards bring us into a much larger debate about influence, pumping and market manipulation. If someone with a massive audience talks publicly about a card they believe is undervalued and demand suddenly explodes, is that unhealthy? Josh Adams argues that artificially accelerated price increases can eventually hurt the collectors buying at the top and drive people out of the hobby when prices inevitably fall. Jeremy pushes back. What if the card really WAS overlooked? What if increased exposure simply introduces thousands of collectors to something they didn't previously know existed? And what if those new collectors genuinely fall in love with it? Is that pumping, or is it price discovery? We also discuss collectors owning dozens of copies of the same card, when collecting becomes investing, why some collectors actually WANT prices to come down, and whether there's such a thing as a "natural" increase in a card's value anymore.
