In this episode, we chat with Spencer Cole, CDO and CFO of Xanadu Mines, a copper exploration company with projects in the South Gobi and Western Mongolia. They aim to develop porphyry and intrusion-related deposits and are committed to Mongolia and its potential as one of the last great copper frontiers. Spencer has qualification in Mech and Material Eng (BS), Business & Finance (MBA), Finance (CPA) and has worked in various industries including mining, aerospace, Oil & Gas across the Americas, Australia, and SE Asia. He’s been with Xanadu for coming up to 5 years now and gives us an overview of the company, their flagship project Kharmagtai and will educate us more on the Lassonde Curve and how that has an impact on the company plus much more. KEY TAKEAWAYS Xanadu Mines is an ASX and TSX-listed exploration company focused on copper and gold in Mongolia, with its flagship project, Kharmagtai, currently at the Pre-Feasibility Study (PFS) stage. The company has transitioned from coal exploration to copper and gold since 2013-2014. The Lassonde curve illustrates the typical life cycle of a junior mining company, showing how market capitalisation fluctuates through different stages of project development. Xanadu's journey reflects this curve, having experienced peaks and troughs as it moved from exploration to commercialisation. Hermagti faces challenges such as funding, permitting, and the need to identify high-grade zones to minimise negative cash flow. However, opportunities exist in the form of potential sequential heap leaching of weathered deposits and the possibility of expanding the resource through further drilling. Zijin Mining, a top global copper and gold miner, has partnered with Xanadu to advance the Kharmagtai project. This partnership is seen as beneficial due to Zijin's experience in advanced metallurgy and their aggressive growth model, which aligns with Xanadu's goals. Over the next 6 to 12 months, Xanadu aims to complete a bankable feasibility study for Kharmagtai and navigate the Mongolian permitting process. The company is also exploring funding options and planning further exploration activities for its other projects, Sant. Tolgoi and Red Mountain. BEST MOMENTS "Xanadu is an ASX and TSX, so dual listed exploration company... focused on copper and gold in Mongolia." "The Lassonde curve illustrates the typical life cycle of a junior mining company, showing its market capitalisation over the different stages of development." "Kharmagtai is a big, low-grade copper-gold porphyry. Its economics work on scale, low strip ratio, and byproduct credits." "Zijin is a top five copper miner... they have a very aggressive growth model and are really experienced at building value through advanced metallurgy." Investor David Erfle offers pro buying tips for junior mining tax-loss selling season in this MSE episode. He also discusses where he expects the gold price to go under Trump. Furthermore, David shares how he is positioning his junior mining portfolio and reveals what he considers when selling a junior mining stock. David Erfle is a self-taught mining sector investor. He stumbled upon the mining space in 2003 as he was looking to invest into a growing sector of the market. After researching the gains made from the 2001 bottom in the tiny gold and silver complex, he became fascinated with this niche market. So much so that in 2005 he decided to sell his home and invest the entire proceeds from the sale into junior mining companies. When his account had tripled by September, 2007, he decided to quit his job as the Telecommunications Equipment Buyer at UCLA and make investing in this sector his full-time job. David founded the Junior Miner Junky subscription-based newsletter in April, 2017 and writes a weekly column for precious metals news service Kitco.com, whose website attracts nearly a million visits every day. 0:00 Introduction 0:57 Gold price under Trump 5:12 Miners' performance relative to gold price 6:55 When to buy during tax loss selling season 9:51 Wanting to sell, but waiting to sell a junior 12:18 Lassonde curve development trough too long 14:22 Current opportunities 16:39 Fully financed pre-production companies 18:43 Unknown risks in junior mining 21:20 “Put yourself in the position to be lucky” 24:36 How Dave consumed mining newsletter content 26:03 Miners and silver will tell you when gold will bottom David's website: https://juniorminerjunky.com/ Sign up for our free newsletter and receive interview transcripts, stock profiles and investment ideas: http://eepurl.com/cHxJ39 Mining Stock Education (MSE) offers informational content based on available data but it does not constitute investment, tax, or legal advice. Brian Leni of JuniorStockReview.com shares five pro tips for successful 2024 resource investing in this monologue. He also reveals three mistakes he made and two successes he achieved in 2023. Brian Leni is the founder of JuniorStockReview.com which exists to offer information, ideas, and strategies for managing speculation in the junior resource sector. Brian first discovered mining stocks about 18 years ago and was immediately intrigued. In 2014/2015, Brian anticipated that the resource sector was closing in on a bottom, and he wanted to access more capital for the expected up-cycle. So he sold his home and then invested 2/3 of the home sale proceeds into resource stocks. By August 2016, he saw his invested funds triple in value. Due to his large gains, Brian quit his professional job as an engineer and now devotes his time to researching and investing in mining stocks. 0:00 Introduction 0:40 2023 Mistake #1: Sell more in bull market frenzies 3:05 2023 Mistake #2: Better align the market cycle with company's Lassonde curve 4:55 2023 Mistake #3: Differentiate between the inevitable and imminent 7:25 2023 Success #1: Good picks & successful profit-taking 9:03 2023 Success #2: Patience sitting on the sideline 10:46 2024 Success Tip #1: Use level two data 12:24 2024 Success Tip #2: Open an Interactive Brokers account 14:00 2024 Success Tip #3: Write out your investment theses & price targets 16:05 2024 Success Tip #4: Read these two book recommendations 17:23 2024 Success Tip #5: Create a list of ten rules you'll abide by in 2024 Brian Leni's website: http://www.juniorstockreview.com/ Brian's Twitter: https://twitter.com/Junior_Stock YouTube Playlist for New Mining Investors: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7SW96tD9Kdg&list=PLEk-3nAisq6z3BTO_g_M_tg7JoC-dAsP8 Sign up for our free newsletter and receive interview transcripts, stock profiles and investment ideas: http://eepurl.com/cHxJ39 The content found on MiningStockEducation.com is for informational purposes only and is not to be considered personal legal or investment advice or a recommendation to buy or sell securities or any other product.
Canada's labour force isn't growing fast enough to keep up with the aging population. On one hand we have a labour supply challenge. But, on the other hand the workers we do have don't always have the skill sets that we need today, but particularly into the future. My guests this episode are both actively working to reshape our skills development and labour market preparedness for students today so that they can fill the labour market demands of tomorrow. We explore how educational institutions are evolving to better equip students for workplaces and how better relationships between employers, educators and the K-12 system are starting to reshape how skills are taught and how people can gain a better understanding of the career options that are available to them.About our guests:Dr. Jane Goodyer is Dean of the Lassonde School of Engineering at York University in Toronto. Earlier in the day I was able to help transfer Florence into the guest room bed while Dan and some of the guys disassembled her bed to ready her room for a hospital bed. Then we took turns visiting with her, saying our goodbyes, eating dinner and being together. very time the door to her bedroom opened she smiled and said “I love that sound!” and then “I want you to keep doing that. Even after.” I reminded her its not like we could stop it. It was a hard day but made easier being all together. She passed on Wednesday. This season, join host Frances Johnson as she explores the topic of continuous curiosity, asking: What is curiosity? Why is it important? And what roadblocks prevent us from being curious in our work, homes, and communities? Throughout this season, we'll also hear from guests who have used curiosity to pursue something new – a degree, a profession, or a passion. In this episode, Frances is joined by husband and wife team and U of U alums, Josh and Becca Hadley. After graduation, Josh and Becca started a custom wedding invitation business, which has pivoted and grown into a stationary empire with over 1300 products, called Hadley Designs. This dynamic duo share with us how using curiosity got them through the challenges of owning a business, how COVID “awakened” a new part of their work, how they balance work, life, raising a family and growing a business, and we'll hear about what Josh calls a pivotal life experience at Lassonde. Episode Quotes:Taking on problems with curiosity20:10: [Becca] Every problem is a learning experience. You have to look at it from that positivity, curiosity standpoint to overcome those problems, or they can overwhelm you. But I also think I always look at it as, you know, "When the going gets tough, that's when people quit." And that's always been a motivator for me because I know we're the ones who will never give up when problems seem overwhelming. The pursuit of continuous improvement and learning04: 14 [Josh] I think continuous education is one of the most important things, even as we've hired our team for the business now. One of the main core values that we have for the business is that we're never satisfied with the status quo. We are always seeking to learn and improve all of our processes. On experiences and support that help fuel creativity 08:48: [Becca] I had some really great professors who just supported creativity in general. What drew me toward early childhood education was the opportunity to create activities and lesson plans. That's what I loved about it—the creation process. And I think the head of the department there and the various professors there were so supportive of trying new ideas and exploring different opportunities and providing you with the resources to do so and to thrive in the creativity aspect of everything. On how the Eccles Community helped spark curiosity and creativity 07:38: [Josh] Whatever you dream up, if you find the market for it, you can go and make your dreams come true. And so, for me, it did give me that inspiration to pursue my dreams and passions. And it opened my mind to the world of possibilities with entrepreneurship.Show Links:Hadley DesignsBeca Hadley on LinkedInJosh Hadley on LinkedInInstagram

The Goldboro project of the company is a 592-hectare land package located 175 km northeast of the city of Halifax. The company published a feasibility study of the Goldboro gold project in 2021, which includes highlights such as an 11-year life of mine with an average gold production of 100,000 ounces annually. Today we collaborate with the National Mining Museum and Hall of Fame. The organization is inducting a new group of mining individuals, including Franco-Nevada's Pierre Lassonde. We were able to connect with Pierre to discuss his upbringing, education, and the entrepreneurial spirit which lead to the founding and success of Franco-Nevada. Not only has Mr. Lassonde obviously found success in business, he has also found success through philanthropic outreach. We chat a little about that as well. Finally, Mr. Lassonde gives a quick synopsis of today's mining, exploration and royalty models. What is working and what may not work. In our second segment, we stick with the royalty model and welcome in Fred Bell, CEO of Elemental Altus Royalties. A lot has changed since the merger. Mr. Bell expresses those changes and reminisces of the rollercoaster which was 2022 for the company. We'd like to thank our sponsors: Integra Resources is advancing the past-producing DeLamar Project in southwestern Idaho. The Company has continued to demonstrate resource growth and conversion through greenfield and brownfield exploration. Integra Resources trades on the TSX-V under ITR and the NYSE American under ITRG. Western Copper and Gold is focused on developing the world-class Casino project in Canada's Yukon Territory. Although some venture capital firms snapped their wallets shut during the first few months of the pandemic, it quickly became apparent that the startups who were able to pivot their business model and go fully digital would not just survive this time period, but thrive. In this episode, Michael sits down with Christian Lassonde, the Founder and Managing Partner of Impression Ventures, to discuss lessons learned from the pandemic and why there's hope for the future yet. As an entrepreneur himself, Christian applied the knowledge he gained from past experiences working in the video game and tech industry to his role as a venture capitalist today. He shares how the lessons he's learned throughout his career have informed his work as a venture capitalist, why he's not interested in a high profile, the importance of playing the long game in business, and much more. All problems are created equalDuring his time as a video game programmer, Christian developed valuable problem-solving skills that he would later take with him into future roles. He learned that regardless of the subject matter or the industry you find yourself in, all problems are created somewhat equal, and finding the answers comes down to your passion, determination, and willingness to solve for X. Ultimately, Christian recognized that while there's an infinite number of paths you can take while running a business, it's all about finding the one magic formula that works for you. Fail fastWhile building Claystone, an Android software development firm, Christian and his team were constantly inundated with the unofficial Silicon Valley mantra: “fail fast.” Taking this maxim to heart, they launched themselves into a continuous, fast-moving loop of test, launch, learn, iterate, and repeat. Christian says the lessons he learned from this experience ultimately made an indelible impression on his overall outlook, arming him with the tools and the repertoire he needed to launch Impression Ventures.Equal parts optimism and cynicism Christian believes that a great venture capitalist should be equal parts optimist and cynic. He noted that without the fundamental belief that what lies ahead is greater than anything humanity has collectively experienced in the past, you likely won't make it very far in the business. Overall, Christian is optimistic about the future, which fuels him to keep moving forward despite any challenges he may encounter along the way. Tom welcomes mining legend Pierre Lassonde to the show. Pierre is the Co-Founder of Franco Nevada and Formerly President of Newmont Mining. Pierre discusses how the dollar and a low-interest-rate environment are good for gold. Real interest rates have to remain low or the debt can't be repaid. Effectively today, we have negative interest rates, and that is always good for gold. When a reserve currency is strong, you don't need gold, but when it is weak, gold becomes the anti-dollar. The U.S. is doing everything it can to devalue the currency, particularly against the Yen and Yuan. Pierre expects the Dow to Gold ratio to once again reach parity. He compares the 1976 to 1980 cycle where gold went from 90 to 800, and we saw rampant inflation. Today's situation is very similar, and that is why he expects gold to ramp up over the next three to five years. He explains his metric called the Lassonde Curve and how it defines the lifecycle of a mine on a time-value basis. The curve highlights the relative risk-reward over time and where the opportunities occur for investors with patience. The gold market has changed greatly over his career. Demand for gold as an investment is steadily increasing, while jewelry demand is relatively flat. Gold behaves as insurance, and often, price doesn't matter when people think they need it. Pierre details the enormous power of the royalty business model and why it creates a lot of optionality. There are advantages to having multiple metals in a deposit particularly of interest is copper-gold deposits. Copper is essential in the modern world, and demand for it will continue to increase due to electrification. Pierre agrees that we are being deluged by information, and much of it may be wrong. He recommends going back to the source and conduct your own research. Then compare your results with others that you value. If the numbers are similar, you can likely trust their opinion. He expects the next three to five years will be unbelievable but make sure that you have real value in your portfolio to outperform. The Lassonde Institute of Mining, the Lassonde Mineral Engineering Program, and the Lassonde Mining Building bear his name. In 2001, Pierre was granted an honorary degree by the University of Toronto. Lassonde has received many other awards, including the Order of Canada, Mining Man of the Year, and Developer of the Year. Historically, the gold miners have led the bullion market in price direction, and right now, the equities are suggesting a rebound in price is underway, said Pierre Lassonde, chairman emeritus of Franco-Nevada. "Right now, there is a bit of a discrepancy and it started about last week where in fact the gold equities are up when the gold bullion is down, so I'm kind of wondering whether or not we're right at this particular point in the cycle where the equities are telling the bullion market that maybe there's a turn coming," Lassonde said.

Items for auction range from produce baskets to artwork, kids play kits to jewelry...even an electric guitar. Auction ends June 24th, so bid high and often. More auctions for needing families are being planned through the Lend-a-hand up website. Contact Jeana and get more info on possibly getting an event on their calendar. Check out all the information and a complete list of the Lassonde auction items at: www.lendahandup.org
This week features Pierre Lassonde's final shareholder meeting as chair of Franco-Nevada. Lassonde discusses the founding of the company, the dramatic appreciation of the stock price over the years, and takes questions from shareholders. He remains chair emeritus at the company. All this and more with online editor Adrian Pocobelli. This week's Mining Minute features Gary Poxleitner, Principal Mining Engineer at SRK Consulting. About 1,500 applicants for just 400 spaces. From 100 entrepreneurial teams to 500 in the short lifetime of the program. What’s so amazing about the Lassonde Entrepreneur Institute that everyone’s clamoring to be a part? The maker space, of course. On a recent episode of Enrollment Growth University, I got to talk to Troy D'Ambrosio, Assistant Dean of the David Eccles School of Business and Executive Director of the Lassonde Entrepreneur Institute at the University of Utah, about how Lassonde grew to support student entrepreneurs. “We've exceeded every expectation we have for the building, for both the residential experience in how students engage with each other and the variety of people we've been able to attract,” Troy said.
This mini-podcast features a clash of visions between Franco-Nevada chairman Pierre Lassonde and new Barrick Gold president and CEO Mark Bristow on the value of keeping Barrick's Canadian identity and robust head office presence in Toronto. With Bristow becoming Barrick's operating head on Jan. 1 with the finalization of the merger between Barrick and Bristow's Randgold Resources, Lassonde had a few choice words to say about the matter in the media and at the Canadian Mining Hall of Fame induction ceremony in January. During Bristow's first conference call with Barrick shareholders on Feb. 13, he gave a fuller explanation of the company's corporate restructuring, and rebutted what he called "those short little hysterical cries about us closing down stuff." Mark Bristow will be one of five keynote speakers at The Northern Miner's third annual Canadian Mining Symposium at Canada House in London on May 22. We were inspired by the creative mojo we felt during our recent visit with Troy D’Ambrosio and Garrett Holm of the Lassonde Studios. Troy is the inspired Executive Director who worked with one of the University of Utah’s biggest benefactors, Pierre Lassonde, to create a special place where students, researchers, engineers and professors could come together to create new companies. Garrett is the young, determined undergrad that serves as Lassonde’s Company Launch Director. Pierre Lassonde graduated with an MBA from the University of Utah in the early 70’s and became one of the most successful entrepreneurial leaders in the history of mining. He wanted to create an ecosystem for creative thinkers, a place where calculated risks would be celebrated and students pushed themselves to go beyond the obligation of earning great grades and degrees. Troy D’Ambrosio and the students at the U answered the call! This interview with Troy and Garrett is inspiring on multiple levels. It’s obvious that Troy D’Ambrosio loves what he does and has built a place and a culture to do it well! As we listened to Troy, a successful entrepreneur, and Garrett, a spirited up and comer, it was obvious that everyone is respected and equal. There is no hierarchy at Lassonde, and everyone feels they can achieve anything if they want it bad enough!
This year, we distill the best moments from 76 holiday greeting videos that were published by colleges and universities across Canada in December 2015, and select a few as “Best in Class” for their categories. Please “take twenty” with us, and enjoy! If you’re creating your own holiday greeting video, be sure to animate your logo with snowflakes and sleighbells. Your task is to convey best wishes on behalf of the campus community, most often featuring the president as spokesperson. A snowy Canadian winter is a natural, non-denominational symbol of winter break, and so many holiday greeting videos feature footage of campus wrapped in a blanket of snow. Perhaps last year was particularly green, since quite a few videos faked the snow – from Royal Roads to Western (which got Best in Class for this category.) The simplest way to incorporate the many voices on campus is to feature a collage of photographs, either taken throughout the year, or staged using holiday props. More popular is the “Holiday Shout-Out”, a compilation of many staff and students sharing their holiday wishes, often in a range of languages and reflecting a variety of traditions. (Humber College gets Best in Class for this category, although there are plenty of other great examples. VIU deserves honorable mention for involving their “Extreme Science” team. uWindsor produced a very slick multilingual video, but Queen’s ultimately got Best in Class for the sheer range of voices and their enthusiasm.) A variation on the “shout-out” is the “on-the-street Q&A”, and again there are plenty of great examples. Many ask students and staff what the holidays mean to them, or what they are looking forward to about the holidays. (SFU gets Best in Class for this category, for a polished and energetic video asking staff and students about their gift to the world.) Many institutions showcase the skills and talents of their students and alumni in their holiday greetings. Sheridan has a tradition of animated videos, and Mohawk of very polished musical greetings. Last year we saw alumni talents featured by NSCC, ECUAD, Ryerson, and Georgian as well. (We awarded Mohawk Best in Class for their musical videos, and even behind-the-scenes video.) Special mention goes to MSVU's recruiters, who clowned around while demonstrating their gift-wrapping skills. We saw tree-trimming parties at King’s and CBU, among others, but uVic took it to a new level with their best-in-class approach to symbolic ornaments and student sound bytes. A close runner-up was George Brown, which created a strong example as well. Santa Claus made an appearance at Douglas, posing for photos with all the good little girls and boys. At Niagara, gifts were delivered by Basil, the greenhouse cat. Brock staged a "parking miracle". A staffer named Lori played Secret Santa at Durham, while Lassonde tackled intergenerational peace and understanding with a defense of Millennials. UNB created an emotional thank-you from scholarship recipients to donors. But our favourite in this category was a wordless music video from uLeth, featuring gorgeous cinematography and Tyrone Wells’ song “Christmas at Home.” (Unfortunately UofL has just recently deleted their upload.) Some institutions promote professional, accomplished singers of Christmas Carols, while many publish videos of enthusiastic amateurs. Some try to stay in key, while others focus on having fun. NSCC shared a sign language caroling performance. Waterloo's Faculty of Environment rewrote “Winter Wonderland” with a “green” focus. Algoma staff participated in a collective reading of “The Grinch”. Bow Valley “put a bow on it.” Fleming produced their own version of Jimmy Fallon’s “Thank You Notes.” RDC parodied “The Night Before Christmas.” Definitely Best in Class for the parody category, however, was a version of the “12 Days of Christmas” by the Film & Video students at CNA. (Of course I can’t resist including uMich Engineering's Star Wars parody, “The Holiday Jedi Rap.”) You can watch the original, unedited versions of these holiday videos in our 2015 Holiday Videos playlist - https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLodJ8ParJmYULq5f-_JsusgbW1V8BNfSd On behalf of everyone here at Eduvation, and from my family to yours, I want to wish you a truly peaceful holiday season, and a happy and prosperous 2017! We’re already assembling a YouTube playlist of 2016 holiday videos, so please add yours here: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLodJ8ParJmYW50HvU2lrHm_DURpmz8jqk&jct=HCQjNaZ4OsE7aqyhuMM-_4ox4oMGcg (We’ll summarize them for next year’s holiday special.)
