Female engineers represent just 12% of the profession in Ireland. To coincide with International Women In Engineering Day 2023 we ask how we can encourage more young women to join the industry? What would a workforce with a better gender balance look like? How could the industry benefit from the unique skills and attributes of women that can often be missed in male dominated spaces? To answer these questions, we're speaking to two female professionals who excel in the space of safety and sustainability, and are passionate about highlighting the variety and creativity available in an Engineering career. They are chartered civil engineer and artist Regina Clery, and safety specialist and experienced auditor Mary Foley. THINGS WE SPOKE ABOUT01:53 How to recruit young women into engineering 08:39 Better representation of female engineers 10:45 Safety measures in action 15:17 Why prevention is better than a cure 19:10 Staying on top of changing environments 23:40 Sustainable development goals 26:56 Applying safety to other industries 31:56 Everyone is responsible for safety GUEST DETAILSRegina Clery Having first started out as an Art & Design student, and now an Engineer, Regina Clery  is interested in projects that involve a range of technologies, culture & art to deliver STEM data across multi-disciplinary audiences. I also know that their attention to detail, in my experience, has been much, much better. And I think in my industry specifically, that's so important. - Mary Foley I started off in art college and in fashion design, and now I'm an engineer. Nobody could have told me at that stage of my life that I was going to be an engineer, I wouldn't have believed it. The link is how to create and fix problems. You have to get into the schools and get them at an early age to attract women into these industries and show them that they can do this, that women are already doing it. - Regina Clery Engineers Ireland has been incredible in terms of providing us with continuing professional development, new stuff coming down the track, new information. We absolutely have to stay on top of it all time, because it's ever moving, ever changing and thankfully ever improving. - Mary Foley Prevention is always better than a cure, but unfortunately, people have this image that safety is expensive. It's not as expensive as a claim, but a claim isn't the be all and end all. It's the personal injury, the pain, the loss, the suffering, the everything else. You should be looking after your people. - Mary Foley There's a huge drive at the moment, particularly with the sustainable development goals. A lot of companies know they should work towards becoming an SDG champion, which is rare nowadays. Maintaining safety in the workplace, the well being of employees, having wellbeing programs, and even gender equality, all those things make your workplace safer. - Regina Clery When we're talking about longevity, changes need to be made to acknowledge that the female body needs particular sizing to comfortably wear PPE. There's no such thing really as unisex PPE, especially when it comes to protective equipment.  - Regina Clery KEYWORDS#safety #engineering #women #IWED #InternationalWomenInEngineeringDay #train

IT audits are critical for analyzing the success of processes, products, and systems, whether existing or newly implemented, and are an essential aspect of compliance and regulatory obligations. It is essentially an evaluation of the controls that are integrated with and around IT systems, and their efficacy is assessed. Are they assessed to see if they are functioning correctly? Is it addressing the risk it was created to address, or is it just meeting the bare minimum of compliance requirements?

In this episode of The Shape of Work, Springworks' HR intern, Rohan Mankad talks to Debjit Basu, Senior Lead HR at Infosys.Debjit is an eternal optimist and likes understanding the WHYs . Curious about life, business and passionate about football, and quizzing!Prior to working in Infosys, he has worked with Cognizant Technologies Solutions. Debjit has a degree in Human Resources from the Indian Institute of Social Welfare and Business Management. A certified Lead Auditor from DNV, he also has a certificate in Positive Psychology and has gone on to become one of the ET Young HR leaders in the recent past. He introduces us to the concept of positive psychology. He talks about how important is its application in an organisational ecosystem and sheds some light on the implications of positive psychology in the HR field. What exactly is Positive Psychology?Apart from having ten years of experience in this field, he is also a Positive Psychology Practitioner certified by the CPD Accreditation Group.Debjit passionately talks about Positive Psychology describing it as ‘the science of mind.' It covers a significant part of the vast field of Psychology and focuses on the equation of happiness in an individual's life. Unlike the other segments of psychology that revolve around depression, anxiety, frustration, etc., this field researches what makes an individual happy. It is the scientific study of strengths to enable humans and organizations to progress.Implementation of Positive Psychology by HR professionals:Debjit explains HR as one of the most strategic departments of any organization. He mentions how employee mental well-being is an integral part of all these organizations. Thus HRs should ensure effective implementation of Positive Psychology within their workspace. Debjit goes on to describe the mental state of people in this current situation. He says, “Everyone wants to care and mutually be taken care of”. And in a workspace, the HR manager is the one to whom employees approach in order to talk and discuss. Thus they should be observant about the areas of their interests. They need to come up with creative ideas and be fluent while applying them.Debjit identifies Positive Psychology as the ‘backbone' of an organization's well-being. He further throws light on the fact that HR professionals need to understand where their employees are coming from. They should understand their concerns and cater to them in a way that the employees feel welcomed to speak about them.“How to make yourself happy?”To keep oneself happy/happier, our guest introduces us to some beautiful ways. He talks about appreciating the benefits that we receive. One of the most significant aspects of this area is the combination of gratitude and mindfulness. These two are evolving words and one of the best ways to raise happiness from within. You need to linger them in the present and you will realize it transforming into a mood-booster later. However, it is important to know that these ways generally vary from person to person. A few ideas effective for one individual might not work for another.Finding meaning in life:For this subject, Debjit gives solutions from his own experiences. He simply asks people to develop a purpose and follow it till they achieve it. He talks about the significance of appreciating one's own strengths as well. People should align things that match with their values and matter to them. If they find themselves being able to do those things, they should be grateful and appreciate it.Follow Debjit Basu on LinkedInProduced by: Priya BhattPodcast host: Rohan Mankad

In this episode of the Global Medical Device Podcast, Jon Speer talks to Taylor Brown, a medical device guru for Greenlight Guru's Customer Success team with 7+ years of industry experience. Taylor shares her valuable insights and learnings from auditing quality management systems as a certified Lead Auditor for ISO 13485. Some highlights of this episode include: • Taylor equates auditing to what needs to be done, just follow the rules, perform everything correctly, and understand how processes/people meet regulations. • Ins and Outs of ISO 13485: Understand the importance of following rules and regulations to be in compliance and not dread an audit. • Greenlight Guru: Taylor lives for meaningful lightbulb moments, such as when procedures, training, and guidelines make sense to bring devices to market. • Equalizer Experience: There's no delay or stalker culture at Greenlight Guru to be efficient and get what you need completed. • Love/Hate Relationship: Audits with customers that implement Greenlight leads to losing fewer documents, a smoother process, and getting done sooner. • Celebrate successful customer stories, such as collaboration, continuous growth, and improvement. You don't need to accomplish/implement everything on Day 1. • Every good idea starts with a plan. A phased approach sets clear expectations. If you don't document something, you didn't do it, according to the FDA. • Sometimes, it's just not that deep. Due to the nature of the industry and pressure to comply quickly, people tend to over-complicate things and strive for perfection.
