What if the most important thing you teach your child has nothing to do with curriculum? The Artifacts: Resting over their eyes were crude, hand-cut lead masks designed to block intense radiation. The Instructions: In their pocket, a cryptic notebook read: "18:30 swallow capsules, after effect protect metals wait for mask signal." The Anomaly: At the exact time they were scheduled to wait for their "signal," local residents reported a fiercely glowing, orange object hovering silently over the hill. Did they make contact, or was it a fatal miscalculation? Case File 2: The Winter Tomb of Yuba County (California, 1978)Often called the "American Dyatlov Pass," five young men with mild intellectual disabilities vanish on a simple drive home from a college basketball game. The Illogical Escape: They abandoned a perfectly functioning, heated car with plenty of gas to walk 19 miles uphill into a freezing, waist-deep blizzard. The Paradox: Months later, one of the men was discovered starved to death inside a Forest Service trailer. He was wrapped in eight heavy blankets, completely surrounded by a year's worth of military rations and a working propane heater that he refused to use. The Ghost: While four bodies were eventually recovered, Gary Mathias vanished into the High Sierra without a trace. Did an unseen terror chase them into the ice, or were they victims of their own shared paranoia? The Thread That Binds Them: One group died because they believed the universe had something greater waiting for them. The other group died because they were consumed by absolute, blinding terror. Malicious streetlights are an evil trick from Dark Data Journalism. Some annoying enemy has a valid complaint. So you use FACTS and LOGIC to prove that something similar-sounding-but-slightly-different is definitely false. Then you act like you've debunked the complaint. My "favorite" example, spotted during the 2016 election, was a response to some #BuildTheWall types saying that illegal immigration through the southern border was near record highs. Some data journalist got good statistics and proved that the number of Mexicans illegally entering the country was actually quite low. When I looked into it further, I found that this was true - illegal immigration had shifted from Mexicans to Hondurans/Guatemalans/Salvadoreans etc entering through Mexico. If you counted those, illegal immigration through the southern border was near record highs. But the inverse evil trick is saying something "directionally correct", ie slightly stronger than the truth can support. If your enemy committed assault, say he committed murder. If he committed sexual harassment, say he committed rape. If your drug increases cancer survival by 5% in rats, say that it "cures cancer". Then, if someone calls you on it, accuse them of "literally well ackshually-ing" you, because you were "directionally correct" and it's offensive to the victims to try to defend assault-committed sexual harassers. This is the sort of pathetic defense I called out in If It's Worth Your Time To Lie, It's Worth My Time To Correct It. But trying to call out one of these failure modes looks like falling into the other. I ran into this on my series of posts on crime last week. Stephen Hawkins has been trying to answer that question with data for nearly a decade. The Beyond MAGA study surveyed nearly 11,000 Trump voters and found four distinct segments: MAGA Hard-liners (29%), Anti-Woke Conservatives (21%), Mainline Republicans (30%), and the Reluctant Right (20%). Three out of five Trump voters say being MAGA is not a central part of their identity. The Exhausted Majority Under Pressure. Stephen expects Hidden Tribes 2.0 to show the wings have grown, not shrunk. The exhausted majority may be moving from exhaustion toward something closer to despair. New Traditionalism and the Logic of Transgression. Among younger Trump voters, traditional or religious identity functions as a form of rebellion in a secular culture. For some Gen Z voters, Christianity is more countercultural than secularism. Supporting Trump taps the same energy as defying the teacher everyone dislikes. The Respect Gap. 84% of Trump voters feel respected by Trump. Only 21% feel respected by Democratic politicians. That 63-point gap is why even reluctant Trump voters are unlikely to migrate to the other party, regardless of policy grievances. No Inflection Points. The Epstein files, Greenland threats, Medicare subsidy rollbacks, military actions in Venezuela and Iran: none of them meaningfully moved Trump voter support. Reconsideration is happening among those who were already hesitant, not among convinced supporters. Stories, Values, Listen. Corey and Stephen both land on the same framework for better cross-divide conversation: surface the other person's story, understand their underlying value system (not just their policy positions), and listen with genuine curiosity rather than loading up your rebuttal. The Case for Clarity. More in Common is nonpartisan and does not have electoral ambitions, but Stephen does not mince words: the country feels pre-hot-conflict, and what it needs is not more outrage but more precision about who is actually out there and what they believe. In this episode of the Data Center Frontier Show, DCF Editor-in-Chief Matt Vincent speaks with Michael Siteman, President of Prodigious Proclivities and a long-time leader and board member within 7x24 Exchange International, about how data center development is being reshaped by AI, power scarcity, network strategy, and community resistance. Siteman explains how site selection has evolved from a traditional real estate exercise into a far more complex infrastructure challenge. “The business used to be a pure real estate play,” Siteman says. “Now it's a systems engineering problem. It's power, network topology, the real estate itself, and political risk.” The conversation explores the growing dominance of power in development strategy, including the rapid rise of behind-the-meter generation as utilities struggle to keep pace with demand. Siteman notes that attitudes toward onsite generation have shifted dramatically in just the past few months. “Six months ago, people would say, ‘If you don't have grid interconnection, we're not interested,'” he says. “In the last 30 days, it's completely different.” Vincent and Siteman also discuss the balance between network access and power access, the risks of pre-leasing capacity before buildings are completed, and the growing importance of local politics and government relations in getting projects approved. The episode closes with a look at the widening gap between traditional hyperscale facilities and AI factories, the question of whether AI infrastructure is heading toward a bubble, and the industry's urgent workforce shortage. “Data centers don't run themselves,” Siteman says. “We simply don't have enough people to build and operate the infrastructure that's coming.” This is a grounded, field-level conversation about what is really driving data center development in the AI era, and what the industry will need to solve next.
