In the episode, "Spotlight on Psychotherapy Beyond Traditional Boundaries with Al Galves: Finding Well-being by Targeting the Underlying Causes of Mental Distress, (S6, E6)" psychoanalyst Galves joins the show to share his own personal lived experience and his insight on the problems with the traditional treatment model in psychiatry. Author of "Harness Your Dark Side: Mastering Jealousy, Rage, Frustration and Other Negative Emotions," Al shares compelling stories that reveal the importance of addressing unmet emotional needs to combat depression and dissatisfaction.Galves challenges the medical model of mental illness arguing that mental health issues are not just biological disorders to be masked with medication but are tied to our emotions and life experiences. He emphasizes taking personal responsibility and explores the profound benefits of psychotherapy and other alternative approaches like support groups and exercise. Discover why confronting your emotions—even the negative ones—can lead to authentic personal growth as Al underscores the significance of connection, self-expression, and capability in fostering mental health and happiness.  Al dives into the complex nature of diagnoses like psychosis, highlighting the importance of understanding these conditions as responses to overwhelming experiences rather than mere pathologies. Through therapeutic approaches like the Soteria House model and the work of psychologist John Weir Perry, we explore how psychosis and other mental health issues can be seen as survival strategies. Al's compassionate insights challenge the limitations of the medical model, offering listeners a glimpse into a more humanistic and empowering approach to mental well-being. Don't miss Al's generous offer of his book and insights for those eager to explore these ideas further. There should be no shame in being who you are. Musician and actor Olly Alexander has felt first hand how grappling with your identity can lead to poor mental health. In this chat with Fearne, Olly explains why he feels there's such a high level of mental distress in the queer community, and how acting in It's A Sin helped him unpack his own lived experience. Both Fearne and Olly share their experiences of poor body image, wondering if bulimia felt like a helpful tool to regain control in an intimidating world. How can you go from disliking your body to recognising the brilliant things it can do for you? Plus, how to let yourself off the hook when you've messed up at work or in a social situation, and what to do when you don't feel you've ‘achieved' enough to be of value... Olly's solo album, Polari, is out in February. CONTENT WARNING: This episode contains frank chat about suicide, self-harm, and bulimia, so take care while listening. Daily Emunah Podcast - Daily Emunah By Rabbi David Ashear

Everything that happens in a person's life is calculated by Hashem down to every last detail. Sometimes there are problems and then Hashem saves us from the problems. Sometimes we think there is a problem, but in the end it turns out to be nothing. And sometimes there is a problem, but Hashem saves us before we even find out about it. Included in every problem, or what appears to be a problem is the mental distress that comes along with it. If a person is not meant to go through even a moment of mental hardship, then Hashem will ensure that he doesn't. Even the timing of when we hear about certain events is also min haShamayim . A man from Israel related that on a trip to America to raise money for an institution, he met a philanthropist who was willing to give him a significant sum on condition he gets hold of a chavruta he once learned with when he was younger so that he could arrange a Yissachar-Zevulun partnership with him. It seemed like an easy request, especially considering the hefty sum this philanthropist was willing to donate, so the man agreed. The philanthropist then gave him the check and told him to make sure he keeps his word. When the man returned back home, the condition slipped his mind and, two weeks later, the philanthropist called him, asking about what happened. The man apologized profusely and set out immediately to track him down. He discovered he was living in a city in the South. He then called a friend from that city who said he never heard of him. Right before that friend was about to hang up the phone with him, he said, “Wait a second. There is someone here who might know him.” He turned to the passer-by and said, “Perhaps you know so-and-so?” “Sure I know him,” the man answered. “What is this about?” “I am speaking with someone who is on a mission for a philanthropist from America who wants to make a Yissachar-Zevulun partnership with him.” The man was in awe when he heard this. He said, “This talmid chacham that you are looking for had a Yissachar-Zevulun partnership with someone else and the benefactor notified me that he can't afford to do it any longer. I pushed off telling him because he truly sits and learns day and night and I couldn't bear to cause him this distress. I didn't know how I was going to tell him, but I couldn't push it off anymore and now I was on my way to speak to him.” Immediately, they called the philanthropist and told him this news. He became very excited and asked how much the talmid chacham was getting from the other benefactor. When he heard the number 5000 shekels per month, he said, “From now on, I'm going to give him 8000, plus if he has any other needs, he can call me at any time and I will provide for them. I truly want him to be able to delve in Torah and avodat Hashem without any disturbances.” Here, Hashem not only saved this talmid chacham from the problem that was coming, He even saved him from having to think about the problem. Everything is calculated with such precision. If a person does have to hear about a problem, that's also calculated and was necessary for his good. And if it does happen, the best reaction would be to say, “I know I needed this and I accept it. Please let whatever happened until now be considered the full kapara that I need, and it shouldn't continue anymore.” May Hashem save us from all types of stress.

In the episode, "A Discussion on Mental Distress in the Family: Life and Fitness Model David Pumo Opens Up (S4, E7)," David, who is also a lawyer and writer, shares his personal family background and reveals a history of mental distress, or what the psychiatric establishment calls "mental illness." In opening up about his lineage as far back as his great uncle's suicide and his grandmother's nervous breakdowns, which resulted in multiple ECT (electroconvulsive therapy) procedures, David shares a personal relationship with what many of us go through--mental distress in the family. But are these genetic certainties? Or is this commonly found in many families?David goes on to share how an extreme depression of his younger brother, John, led to his suicide, which was difficult for his family, but in a moment of dire crisis, his parents turned their energy towards a positive momentum. In his memory, David's parents dedicated years of their lives after John's suicide to changing the landscape of gay rights through their involvement in PFLAG, or the Federation of Parents and Friends of Lesbians and Gays, Inc.David's mother also experienced being prescribed psych meds by her GP in her late years, which possibly led to her body's decline within only months after taking them.  The question remains: why put an elderly person on a psych med when they are already so weak and might have trouble processing it? David Pumo is honest, raw, and tells his story with a sense of humor and acceptance reminding each of us how compassion might be the best medicine for "mental illness" in the family.#genetics #suicide #mentalillness #mentalhealth #fitness #psychmeds #ECTharms #depression #PFLAG #gayrights #To see some work of my bodypainting on David, check out:(Warning: mature content)https://youtu.be/eq9VKdBujiQhttps://youtu.be/CJVJm_6rpkoFollow David at:Twitter and Insta: @DavidJerome629and YouTube: @DavidPumoDon't forget to subscribe to the Not As Crazy As You Think YouTube channel @SicilianoJenAnd please visit my website at: www.jengaitasiciliano.comConnect: Instagram: @ jengaitaLinkedIn: @ jensicilianoTwitter: @ jsiciliano

Driven by her own disabling experience as a young person forced to take psych meds, she made it her life mission to help others. Unconvinced of psychiatry's biomedical paradigm, she stopped taking the meds and became an impactful and well-known activist in the psychiatric survivor movement. Gaining experience through organizations like the Freedom Center, which used alternative methods to treating mental distress such as peer support, she began consulting others searching for an alternative way. Philip Resnik, PhD, returns to the Psychcast, this time with his research partner and wife, Rebecca Resnik, PsyD, to discuss the interface between language, psychiatry, psychology, and health. Dr. Philip Resnik appeared on the show previously to discuss artificial intelligence, natural language processing, and mental illness. He is a professor in the department of linguistics at the University of Maryland, College Park, and has a joint appointment with the university’s Institute for Advanced Computer Studies. Dr. Philip Resnik has disclosed being an adviser for Converseon, a social media analysis firm; FiscalNote, a government relationship management platform; and SoloSegment, which specializes in enterprise website optimization. Some of the work Dr. Philip Resnik discusses has been supported by an Amazon AWS Machine Learning Research Award. Dr. Rebecca Resnik is a licensed psychologist in private practice who specializes in neuropsychological assessment. In 2014, she served as cofounder of the Computational Linguistics and Clinical Psychology workshop at the North American Association for Computational Linguistics. She continues to serve as a workshop organizer and clinical consultant to the cross-disciplinary community. She has no disclosures. Dr. Norris disclosed having no conflicts of interest. Take-home points Dr. Rebecca Resnik and Dr. Philip Resnik are interested in finding measurable, observable features to apply to the assessment of psychological and psychiatric diagnoses. They point out that finding an objective measure is essential for scaling up mental health evaluations and treatment. Natural language processing (NLP) is focused on analyzing language content. NLP technology has generated tools such as Siri, Alexa, and Google Translate, and NLP allows computers to do things more intelligently with human language. Individuals are using machine learning and NLP to analyze language data sets to evaluate diagnostic criteria. The goal is to create or use language sets that can be analyzed outside of the clinic. Dr. Rebecca Resnik imagines a world where a patient gives a “language sample” to an app or an avatar that would be evaluated by NLP that would, in turn, offer some overarching hypotheses about the person. So much of evaluations is trying to home in on the correct signal, explicit and implicit, from the patient. In addition, neuropsychiatric tests/scales are standardized against a limited scope of the population, so NLP would be matched to the individual. Dr. Philip Resnik looks at signals in text and speech content, acoustics, microexpressions, and even biometric data. Machine learning can process and distill a huge amount of data with various signals more easily than any human. Dr. Rebecca Resnik revisits the idea of clinical white space, which is the “space” or the time between clinical encounters, and this is where decompensation and high-risk suicidal behaviors occur. She suggests that NLP software could be used to fill this white space by using apps to collect text samples from patients, and the software would analyze the samples and warn of patients who are at risk of decompensation or suicide. If clinicians were to use text or speech samples from people’s smart technology, we could assess an individual's risk in the moment and use nudge-type interventions to prevent suicide. Finally, Dr. Philip Resnik emphasizes that there are technologists who have the skills and technology that is on the verge of helping clinicians, but the key to progress is collaborating with clinicians. But to recognize that if it's humanly possible, you can do it too." -Marcus Aurelius Providing the above, poignant quote, Paul Domenick reminds us that he has dedicated significant time to the study of stoicism, particularly the words of Marcus Aurelius and Seneca. Join Paul and I as we explore the merits of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT), the "communication crisis" facing culture, and how to access our "inner wise selves." Domenick describes his own journey with stoicism, illustrating that he practices the philosophy which he preaches. Further, Paul articulates the merits of personal journaling, an art with which your correspondent is professionally familiar. Paul shares excerpts from his journaling curriculum, co-written by Aion Media Co's own @Pathtomanliness, Ryan Felman. Listen for these 4 tips from Paul, toward the end of the podcast, and fill in the answers! 1. Try to start being more ___ and ___see the task as an end itself, not just a means. 2. Start pushing past your perceived___. Write an extra page or paragraph that you normally wouldn't. 3. Question ___ that you have throughout the day. 4. Visualize yourself ___ before you expect to see external results. Ask yourself '___?' Challenge the meanings you attach to events! -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Follow Paul: Twitter: @PaulMDomenick "The Path to Journaling" Course: https://gumroad.com/l/journaling -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Resources Mentioned: The Tools: 5 Tools to Help You Find Courage, Creativity, and Willpower--and Inspire You to Live Life in Forward Motion by Phil Stutz and Barry Michels How to Think Like a Roman Emperor: The Stoic Philosophy of Marcus Aurelius by Donald Robertson Articles Discussing Therapeutic Usage of Journaling: Pennebaker, J. In this episode, we continue our discussion on conflict resolution. In particular, we take a closer look at handling physical and mental distress. In order to have endurance and grow in patience, we have to set our minds on the things of God and not the things of Man. One profound key to being able to handle the stress of life in a patient manner, is to check how you are doing on setting reasonable expectations for yourself. Our Heavenly father carries the loads for us to the questions of life that He doesn't give us an explanation for. However, we have to trust that He loves us and knows all things, and therefore we can rest in not understanding it all. In time, God may show you why He allowed the difficulties to arise in your life, or He may not. Background: Our retrospective follow-up study aimed to explore the degree of overall mental distress in a cohort of solid-organ transplantation (SOT) recipients after liver, heart or lung transplantation. Furthermore, we investigated how overall mental distress is linked to health-related quality of life. Methods: 123 SOT patients treated during the study period were enrolled in this investigation at a mean of 24.6 months (SD=11.6) after transplantation. Before transplantation, the Transplant Evaluation Rating Scale (TERS) was used to classify the level of adjustment in psychosocial functioning among transplantation candidates. After transplantation, recipients completed a research battery, which included the SCL-90-R, and the SF-36. Results: 39 (31.7%) transplantation recipients had clinically significant overall mental distress as measured on the Global Severity Index of the SCL-90-R. Obsessive-compulsive symptoms (92.3%), somatization symptoms (87.2%), anxiety symptoms (84.6%), depression symptoms (82.1%) and phobic anxiety symptoms (69.2%) were a frequent finding. Transplantation recipients with overall mental distress had significant lower levels of adjustment in psychosocial functioning before transaplantation than those without overall mental distress as measured in the TERS. Transplantation-related overall mental distress symptomatology was associated with maximal decrements in health-related quality of life. Conclusion: Transplantation recipients may face major transplantation-and treatment-related overall mental distress and impairments to their health-related quality of life. Further, overall mental distress is a high-risk factor in intensifying impairments to patients' overall quality of life.

Are people ashamed? Is the stigma gone? Are there differences among white women and Black women?
