Some would argue our world has got too busy, too frantic, that we never get a chance to switch off. An estimate from a few years ago believes we have as much as 34GB of information coming into us every day. Some of this business is likely due to never being able to switch off from incoming info, as well as a loss of “stopping cues” around us, e.g. ads on linear tv, intermissions at movies. We can get into a pattern of always being on, always “doing”, never stopping and just “being”. It's arguably not good for our wellbeing —a constant low level of stress— and can also affect relationships, e.g. having a conversation at the same time as scrolling on your phone. Here are three things people could try if they want to experiment with an antidote to this business: 1) Mindfulness: one aspect of mindfulness is becoming aware of when your attention has shifted and moving it back to just one thing, e.g. your breathing. 2) Concentrating on doing everyday tasks one at a time, e.g. if brushing your teeth, just brush your teeth. Notice all the aspects of it – notice your mind wandering away and practice bringing it back to the task at hand. 3) Watch some slow tv. My best recommendation for the moment is the Great Moose Migration on Swedish tv (svtplay.sw). It's 24/7 coverage of moose migrating across a river —over 30 cameras but very slow— long shots of Swedish wilderness without a moose in sight. It's on right now but only lasts for a few more days – you can almost feel your blood pressure lowering. Give it a go, see if it makes a difference! I was living in Mexico City, where I am originally from, and I had been working in a big multinational company for some time. I had a promising career ahead of me with so much external validation (so much!), and yet, my internal discomfort was so strong that I decided to take a leap of faith; I quit my job and moved to Paris with the dream of becoming a photographer. He never considered himself, always putting the needs of the less fortunate before his own. He often gave the shirt off his own back. (As his mother, it got expensive replacing them all!) He was a phenomenal artist, loved gardening and loved all of humanity. He was extremely intelligent and that fact caused him some suffering during his lifetime. He had helped one of the Afghan interpreters finish medical school after his mother passed away. Then he was working to bring this interpreter to the US from Afghanistan with his wife and 4 children. When the Taliban took Kabul, he lost hope of helping them and took his own life. There were quite a few interpreters he was trying to help. But this family meant so much to him. He had done very well for a while. The PTSD really didn't show for about 5 years really. But then things turned. I am quite certain he had a traumatic brain injury as well. He moved out to LA 7 years ago, lived as a homeless man for about 4 years, became addicted to street drugs…even went to jail for a few months. He finally accepted that he needed help and was working with the VA in LA. They got him an apartment through subsidized housing that he loved and a monthly income. They helped him with medical and dental issues too. We really thought he had turned the corner. It was a shock to all of us when he took his own life. He had been making so many plans with so many people. We spend the first week just sending screenshots and emails to each other from him…even from the day before his suicide. None of us saw anything that gave us any concern. In this episode, we're going to talk about 5 steps to improve your meditation practice so that you can experience rewards like better sleep and less anxiety. Meditation has changed my life. That is ever since I learned how to mediate correctly. Because, I imagine like many other people who have given up this mindfulness practice, I was approaching it all wrong. In fact, it was never a priority for me, just something I would try before work calls or meetings and then in a panicked state. This year I changed my approach and I'll never go back to life without meditation. This year I changed my approach and I'll never go back to life without meditation. It just makes me a better mom, wife and business owner. Here are the 5 steps I use for successful meditation. Action Plan: 1 - Play theta waves music before you get settled into your meditation. This will help put you in a relaxing theta brain wave state. 2 - Find a quiet place to sit for 15 to 30 minutes, where you won't be disturbed. Communicate with family members so they know not to bother you during this time. 3 - Establish an anchor, such as your breathing or a mantra, to gently bring your mind back when it starts to wander. Be patient and don't worry if your mind wonders. 4 - Just be - create space for your mind to rest and clear. Experiment with visualizations like an empty room to help quiet your thoughts. 5 - Continue mindfulness practices throughout the day, such as noticing and releasing any anxious habits like clenched fists or tight shoulders. I am excited to dig deep into our belief system and how these conscious and sub-conscious beliefs can keep us stuck as we make changes in our relationship with alcohol and beyond. First, let's talk about the three levels of belief - particularly relevant when we think about alcohol: Substance (what we believe about the liquid alcohol Society (what our culture, our family of origin and society tells us about alcohol that we have come to accept as the truth) Self (what we believe about ourselves that relates to alcohol) These levels of belief are in order (1-3) intentionally. Challenging our belief system gets harder as we move from substance to society to self. (For more on this, and examples, listen to this week's podcast episode.) So, how are beliefs formed, and how do we challenge the beliefs that no longer serve us?
