What if one person noticing something in you changed the entire trajectory of your life? In this episode, Samyr Laine, Haitian-American Olympian, attorney, and managing partner of Freedom Trail Capital, shares how a high school track coach who noticed a kid with leaping ability in gym class set off a chain of events that led to the Olympic Games, a call from the president of Haiti, boardrooms with Jay-Z and the NFL, and a venture fund investing at the intersection of culture, lifestyle, and influence. Samyr was user number 14 on Facebook, roommates with Mark Zuckerberg at Harvard, and has built one of the most unusual and compelling careers in venture capital. But none of it traces back to a famous name or a prestigious institution. It traces back to Coach Burks, who saw something and said something.   [00:06:00] What He Does and Who He Serves Managing partner of Freedom Trail Capital, a consumer-focused venture fund Invests at the intersection of culture, lifestyle, and influence Raising a $50 million first fund with investments across baby care, hair care, pet care, and beverages [00:07:40] What Inspires Him Driven by the pursuit of excellence in whatever role he is in Meets with founders even when he can't invest; every conversation teaches him something Reads nonfiction constantly to learn how others persevere Measures progress in bite-sized steps just like he did as an Olympic athlete [00:13:00] How He Got Here After Harvard, got a master's at UT Austin then attended Georgetown Law Competed professionally in track and field for 10 years including the 2012 London Olympics Represented Haiti at seven world championships and three Pan American Games Started his real career as legal counsel in DC before moving into sports business [00:14:00] From Sports Law to Roc Nation Started his real career as legal counsel for the Washington Wizards, Capitals, and Mystics Was happy in sports law when a recruiter called with an offer he couldn't refuse Jay-Z was looking for someone to handle operations at Roc Nation Left the sports world for a completely new chapter as an operator [00:15:40] From Roc Nation to Westbrook Left Roc Nation after a couple of years and joined Westbrook Inc as SVP of Operations Helped oversee Will and Jada Pinkett Smith's entire media and production enterprise Moved to lead their consumer product division covering brands, licensing, and IP monetization Worked with talent ranging from Pelé and Patrick Mahomes to DJ Jazzy Jeff [00:19:40] The Vision for Freedom Trail Capital Goal is to move from fund one to fund two to fund three Wants to be the tip of the spear for culturally relevant consumer brands Mission is to prove talent-backed businesses work when paired with discipline and rigor Model: find scalable, defensible businesses then add the right person of influence [00:23:40] The First Relationship That Changed Everything: Coach Burks Got cut from his track team in eighth grade; came back junior year to find a new coach Coach Burks noticed his leaping ability in gym class and introduced him to the triple jump Had no idea what the triple jump was; just wanted to be a sprinter That one introduction led him to the 2012 London Olympics and seven world championships [00:25:40] The Second Relationship: Desiree Perez of Roc Nation Working under Desiree shaped the pace, discipline, and operating style he carries today She put him in boardrooms with Facundo Bacardi and Roger Goodell of the NFL Was in the early rooms when Roc Nation partnered with the NFL on Super Bowl halftime entertainment The people he met in her orbit opened doors he could never have reached on his own [00:27:40] What Coach Burks's Introduction Made Possible Chose to represent Haiti at the Olympics; the Haitian team had six athletes, the US had nearly 600 After qualifying for the finals, received a personal call from the president of Haiti Town squares across Haiti filled with thousands watching the Olympic triple jump final He now sits on the board of a school and orphanage in Haiti; it all started with one introduction [00:33:00] The Value of One Right Relationship One right relationship can pay dividends for decades in ways you never expected His introduction to the triple jump led to the Olympics, which still opens doors today Every stop was about gaining skills and being more useful at the next one One introduction can be worth as much as a check   KEY QUOTES "Your network and your relationships, man, it cannot be overstated how valuable it is." - Samyr Laine "The value of one right relationship. Jaime has built a sizable retirement portfolio, but now he's wondering whether the complexity inside his 401(k) actually matters—or if he's overthinking the mechanics of retirement accounts and Roth conversions. Tina has owned a successful rental property near the University of Central Florida for more than a decade, but changing market conditions and growing competition from corporate landlords are making them wonder whether it's finally time to sell. The noise didn't.What started as ordinary apartment sounds slowly turned into something impossible to explain. Running echoed through the empty apartment whenever his parents screamed at each other. This Substack is reader-supported. To receive new posts and support my work, consider becoming a free or paid subscriber.I chatted with Rodney Howard in February of 2022. He was in his drum room — blue kit behind him, Meshell Ndegeocello shirt on — and what started as a podcast felt more like a conversation between two guys who just happened to both live in this world.I had a great time revisiting this one.The Lost Boys is now running at the Palace Theatre with 12 Tony nominations, including Best Musical. It's the most Tony-nominated musical of 2026. Rodney is the percussionist on that show. Before that, he held the drum chair at Mrs. Doubtfire, subbed some of the hardest chairs on Broadway, and spent years on the road with Avril Lavigne, Gavin DeGraw, and Regina Spektor. This episode is about how you build that kind of career. He started on saxophone. Switched to drums at 17. Moved to New York not thinking about Broadway at all. Then Jeff Campbell put his name in front of Chris Parker, and the rest is a masterclass in being ready when the call comes. Two things from this conversation I almost forgot about that were really important. First, he said, take notes literally and broadly, but not too literally. He learned that the hard way at Lion King, following a sub-conductor's shaky conducting because Tommy told him to follow the conductor. The notes you get points you somewhere, but it doesn't replace your judgment.Second, when you sub, use what the drummer uses for monitoring. Not your nice headphones. Not your in-ears. Whatever they use. The mix was built around that. He said he's personally tanked a sub gig because he didn't. Said it like a man who doesn't enjoy repeating the experience. The video drops this Friday. Go listen.Originally released February 2022 on the Broadway Drumming 101 Podcast.Clayton Craddock is the drummer for Cats: The Jellicle Ball on Broadway at the Broadhurst Theatre. He is also the founder of Broadway Drumming 101 and the author of Broadway Bound and Beyond: A Musician's Guide to Building a Theater Career. His Broadway credits include Memphis, Lady Day at Emerson's Bar and Grill, Ain't Too Proud, and Cats: The Jellicle Ball, with additional credits spanning tick, tick…BOOM!, The Hippest Trip: The Soul Train Musical, and subbing on Rent, Motown, Evita, Avenue Q, and the Hadestown tour.Clayton has appeared on The View, Good Morning America, The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, The Today Show, and the Tony Awards. What does it take to build a career shaped by deep listening, quiet confidence, and the courage to lead without losing yourself in the process? In this episode of LytePOD, host Sam Koerbel sits down with Teal Brogden, co-leader of HLB Lighting Design, one of the world's most influential architectural lighting design firms, to unpack what it really means to lead with empathy, curiosity, and panache. Teal reveals why listening with empathy is the foundation of great design, why presence matters more than perfection, and why the best measure of success isn't the rendering or the award—it's the window washer who feels honored to work on a building because it means something to the community. She walks through the art of asking the right questions, the courage it takes to say yes to adventure while staying grounded in technical rigor, and why collaboration isn't just working together—it's creating space for others to shine and trusting that what you give out is what you get back.

What do you do when you're willing to work on the relationship, but your spouse won't attend therapy? This is one of the most painful dynamics I see in clinical work—because healing often feels stalled when one person is carrying the emotional labor alone. But while you cannot control someone else's willingness, you can begin shifting the relational system through boundaries, emotional regulation, clearer communication, and self-awareness.One research-backed framework I often reference is Dr. John Gottman's “Four Horsemen” of destructive communication: criticism, contempt, defensiveness, and stonewalling—patterns that can quietly erode connection over time. Learning to spot them is a powerful first step toward healthier dialogue.Read more here: The Gottman Institute's Four Horsemen articleIf this conversation resonates with your story, I'd love to support your healing journey.✨ Counseling + resources: Moved by Grace Counseling

It's something more uncomfortable, more nuanced, and honestly more worth talking about. This is the conversation that follows last week's episode on redefining success. Because clarity is not the finish line. It's the starting line.In this episode:• Why the gap between knowingand doing is where most women live• The real reason you're notmoving (hint: it's not what you think)• 3 specific patterns keepingyou stuck — and what to do about each one• Why clarity can feel likegrief — and why that's completely normal• The one thing Laura wants youto do this weekIf you've ever said "I know what I want, I just can't seem to make myself do it" — this episode is for you.Check out my favorite supplements and workouts that help keep my health and wellness on track here:https://linktr.ee/lauracatina

“It's hard to judge when these guys are progressing the sport that much, in such a short amount of time.” Among the vape stores selling synthetic cannabinoids, packeted magic mushrooms, and aggressively branded T-shirts bearing prophetic slogans like “It's Not Gonna Lick Itself” and “Slippery When Wet,” alongside racks of hyper-compressed shorts stamped with male first names that claimed ownership of the wearer's ass, stood CJ Hobgood. I know CJ works in real estate now, but after a week of bumping into him around the pool, I'd let that man house-sit my dog. Speak to any of the staff and the same name kept surfacing: CJ, everyone's favourite person they met, the most personable, remembered names, stayed warm and curious through the whole thing, just a genuinely nice guy. He was also excellent in the commentary booth. Sharp, articulate, energetic, strangely attentive. At one point he appeared to be analysing the aerodynamic implications of a competitor's hair bun placement. With an eye for detail like that, we thought it important to get CJ in for a full debrief of a week spent inside the beautiful, naturally exquisite civic labyrinth of Virginia Beach. The boys compare Hughie Vaughan's stale backflip with Eithan Osborne's backside-stale-body-varial-late-revert, straight airs versus rotations, Lee Wilson's influence on modern aerial surfing, whether hyper-technical progression actually means better surfing, the changing of the aerial guard, and the important hypothetical of Nate Fletcher versus Kelly Slater in a 50+ air comp. Oh, and Dane Reynolds brought fellow Ch11 gang member / warehouse employee Jake Kelley to the desk with him.

I'm Chris Dufey. I run The Rainmakers. We help coaches and consultants do $1M/yr working 2-4 hours a day. Couple years ago I was sleeping on a couch. Wife pregnant. Daughter on the way. She showed up on time. I did not. Fast forward — 4 kids, two houses (Bali + Australia), sold my last company. Now I get to be the guy behind the scenes of some of the best online businesses on the internet. And still do school pickup. Still surf on Tuesdays. Nothing glamorous about it. That's kinda the whole point. The speedrun of how I got here: 18 — Got into personal training. I was the fat kid. Wanted abs. Wanted girls to notice. Whatever, it worked. 21 — Ran a PT agency across Sydney gyms. 25 — Moved to Dubai. First kid. Discovered that new dads can survive on vibes and espresso alone. 27 — Moved to Bali to "start an online business." Translation: I had no idea what I was doing. 28 — Launched a supplement company. Blew it up. (Not proud. Not hiding it.) 29 — Accidentally became a business coach because PTs kept asking how I was living abroad. 31 — Founded Coaches Cartel — coaching + software + virtual teams for fitness pros. 34 — Became a dad of four. 10/10 do not recommend doing this and running a business simultaneously unless you like chaos. 35 — Sold the coaching business. Multi-7-figures. 36 — Started consulting 6/7/8-figure CEOs. $25K/month retainers. Weird flex but ok. 38 — Started The Rainmakers. Today — my team and I build the machines behind some of the best operators online. P.S. — talking to a camera all day gets old. Drop a comment. Ask me something. Disagree with me. Whatever. I actually read them. Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/chrisdufey Substack: https://chrisdufey.substack.com/ Website: https://chrisdufey.com Website: https://wearetherainmakers.com

British pop star Maisie Peters first came to Australia supporting her friend (and boss), Ed Sheeran. Since then, she’s released one of the most beloved breakup albums in modern pop, toured with Taylor Swift on the Eras Tour, gone viral for reasons both good and brutal, and built a fiercely devoted fanbase drawn to her razor-sharp songwriting about love, heartbreak and, yes, “mid men”. Now, Maisie is back with a new album, Fluorescence — a record that feels softer, happier and more grounded than the chaos of The Good Witch. In this conversation with No Filter Executive Producer Bree Player, Maisie opens up about the “mid men” who inspired her biggest songs, the online backlash that followed her viral Eras Tour moment, what it was like recovering from serious vocal issues behind the scenes, and how falling in love changed the way she writes music. They also talk about songwriting as emotional archaeology, growing up online, why happiness is actually harder to write about than heartbreak, and the surprisingly healthy reality of being in a relationship while still performing songs about exes night after night. Plus: Ed Sheeran as a boss, secret boyfriends with emoji faces, and why Maisie Peters considers all of Australia her hometown. The question of origins is often difficult to study because originators do not always leave a paper trail. Therefore, uncovering origins can be challenging – and the story of the background of Yiddish-speaking Jews in Eastern Europe is no exception. It is complicated by the fact that in the recent past the Jewish population of the area was in the millions and it is not obvious where they came from. It is tempting for some to see them as having come from the Rhineland in search of safety and security but there are many reasons to be dubious about this. What is much more likely, as we shall see, is that the basis for the Yiddish-speaking Jewish population of Eastern Europe was the Jewish population of what is now the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Austria. They came in dribs and drabs because of economic pressures. We will examine various pieces of evidence that support this picture. While not dramatic, it was pragmatic and successful. Economic changes in the Polish-Lithuanian lands offered new opportunities to Jews and this in turn, led to conditions of rapid population growth – rapid enough to create a massive population within several centuries. "My Heart is in the East": How Yiddish Speakers Moved to the East

If you've ever fantasized about packing up your life, leaving the US, and actually doing the damn thing — this episode is your sign. I'm sitting down with Alicia Sanchez, founder of Felicita & Faustina studio shop, marketing expert with 20+ years in the game (American Express, ESPN, Klaviyo — the girl's got credentials), and now a full-time entrepreneur living her best life in Southern Spain with her wife and six-year-old daughter. She bought a house. In cash. For under $70K. And she wants you to know it's more doable than you think. We get into the real — not the Instagram-filtered version. The financial planning, the digital nomad visa process, what attorneys actually cost (hint: not $10K), the tax reality, and why the thing that changed her life the most wasn't the house or the visa. For the first time in 26 years of the Working Relations Index, every single North American OEM moved up the chart. Ford, Toyota, Stellantis, Honda, GM, and Nissan all scored higher than the year before. That has never happened. Not once.In this special episode, Jan sits down with Dr. Angela Johnson, principal at Plante Moran responsible for the WRI, along with Sig Huber, Chief Commercial Officer of Elm Analytics and former supplier risk leader at Toyota and Fiat Chrysler. Three sharp voices. One story the industry needs to hear.Tariffs. EV cost recovery. Permacrisis fatigue. Return-to-office mandates. Four undercurrents shaped this year's results, and they all point to the same place. When OEMs can't control the macro, they lean into what they can control. Communication. Accessibility. Buyer responsiveness. Taking the meeting. Listening. Acting. That's what moved the needle, and the suppliers noticed.Ford's 32-point jump is the second-largest gain in WRI history, and Liz Door led that charge from the top. Stellantis is showing the early signs of a real turnaround under Filosa. GM's still working through cultural inertia, but the relationship side keeps moving in the right direction. And Toyota and Honda aren't slowing down.Angela also unpacks her new 6C framework. It's the bridge between transactional and relational. Commercial fairness, consistency, clear expectations, communication, continuity, and collaboration. It's the structure the industry's been missing. But here's the harder truth. The next 18 to 24 months will test every relationship in this industry. Cost of goods sold is climbing. Supplier financial distress is creeping back. Cross-functional alignment inside the OEMs is slipping. The playbook's changing. The question isn't whether we can do this together. It's whether we will. Here's the link to the WRI 2026 StudyThemes Discussed in this EpisodeFirst-time-ever WRI result: all six OEMs scored upPermacrisis fatigue and the shift toward collaborationTariffs, EV cost recovery, and commercial fairnessThe 6C framework: bridging transactional and relationalFord's record-setting jump and Liz Door's leadershipStellantis's rebound under FilosaGM's ongoing culture changeTop 50 suppliers, organizational memory, and cultural inertiaReturn-to-office mandates and buyer performanceCross-functional decline inside the OEMsFrom cost reduction to resilience: the playbook is changing

The Storm Had You Convinced, That's When God Moved

Have you ever been in a storm so fierce, so relentless, so overwhelming that it began to convince you? Convince you that it was not going to end. Convince you that God was not listening. Convince you that this time — there was no way out. I want you to stop right now and receive this truth — because God has never once moved on anyone's behalf BEFORE the storm reached its worst. He always moves at the moment the storm says it has won.Think about the disciples in Mark chapter 4. The waves were beating into the ship. The ship was filling with water. Every natural sign said they were going to die. And at that exact moment — when the storm had convinced them it was over — Jesus arose and said three words that stopped everything."And he arose, and rebuked the wind, and said unto the sea, Peace, be still. And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm." — Mark 4:39 (KJV)Let these words resonate within your heart today. Jesus did not speak BEFORE the storm peaked. He spoke when the storm had everyone convinced. Take comfort in this — the storm that has been working hardest to convince you that God has forgotten you is the very storm that is about to hear His voice. He is not late. He is not absent. He is waiting for the moment of maximum impossibility — because that is when His glory is most undeniable."I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills — from whence cometh my help? My help cometh from the LORD, which made heaven and earth." — Psalm 121:1-2 (KJV)Understand this — David wrote Psalm 121 from the middle of his storm. Not after it ended. IN it. And he lifted his eyes — not because the storm was over, but because he knew Who was watching. The same God who made heaven and earth is watching over YOUR storm right now. He sees every wave. He hears every wind. And at exactly the right moment — He will arise and speak. And when He speaks, your storm will have no choice but to obey.May this teaching fill your heart with peace and remind you that God always moves at the moment the storm says it has won. Remember — it is only when we lift our eyes in the middle of the storm that we discover God was already moving on our behalf. Thank you for joining me today. Indiana's response brief in the Richard Allen appeal does not read like the work of a State that's confident in its conviction. It reads like the work of a State that's worried about its record. The defense brought specifics. A van timeline contradicted by FBI cell data and surveillance footage. A confession from Richard Allen claiming he shot Abby Williams and Libby German, when the medical examiner concluded the girls were killed with a blade. An alternative suspect whose interview was allegedly recorded over by Indiana investigators, whose firearm was never collected, whose phone was never searched. The State did not rebut those points on their merits. The State argued procedure. Harmless error. Waiver. Default. The defense filed the paperwork wrong. The defense argued the wrong way. The defense forfeited the issue. That isn't a defense of the trial. That's an attempt to keep an appellate panel from ever reaching the trial.Defense attorney Bob Motta joins Tony Brueski for Part One of a three-part panel on the procedural-versus-factual collision at the center of this appeal. They unpack why a State holding a conviction would build its strategy around stopping the panel at the courthouse door instead of inviting them in. They examine what the recorded-over interview means now that three judges are reading the same record the jury never saw. They get into the cause-of-death mismatch and why a confession to the wrong method of murder is harder to brush off in an appellate brief than it ever was in a closing argument.Three judges. No more paper. The State's procedural firewall is the only thing standing between the panel and the underlying record.LINKS:Join Our SubStack For AD-FREE ADVANCE EPISODES & EXTRAS!: https://hiddenkillers.substack.com/Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? In the late 1950s, Pamela strategically seduced producer Leland Hayward, eventually becoming his wife to secure a new life in America. She moved to the United States in 1959, where she was viewed by New York and Washington society as a dangerous "vixen" due to her reputation as a seductress. Despite the success of The Sound of Music, she discovered Leland was financially unstable, leading her to sell her European assets to sustain their lifestyle. Seeking intellectual fulfillment, she opened a Manhattan shop, though her celebrity clients often failed to pay their bills. During this time, she maintained a close friendship with President John F. Kennedy, and his 1963 assassination was a profound personal blow to her. As Leland's health deteriorated throughout the 1960s, Pamela faced hostility from his children, who resented her influence and feared for their inheritance. By Leland's death in 1971, she was left financially depleted. (5/8)1650

In this episode of Jewish Voices, American Stories, we'll explore the Jewish writers whose words helped shape not just literature—but the moral and spiritual conscience of America. We begin with Elie Wiesel, a Holocaust survivor whose powerful testimony in Night brought the reality of unimaginable suffering into classrooms and hearts across the country. Through his writing, Wiesel bore witness to both the horrors he endured and the enduring themes of faith, justice, and human dignity.Next, we meet Hannah Arendt, a brilliant thinker who fled Nazi Europe and later challenged the world to confront a difficult question: how ordinary people can become part of extraordinary evil. Through her reporting on the trial of Adolf Eichmann and her lifelong work, Arendt helped bring the moral complexities of the Holocaust into American thought—urging readers not only to remember history, but to learn from it.Finally, we turn to Emma Lazarus, a poet whose words helped define the American ideal. Moved by the plight of Jewish refugees, Lazarus gave voice to a vision of the United States as a place of refuge and hope. Her poem “The New Colossus” forever transformed the Statue of Liberty into a symbol of welcome—inviting the world's “tired” and “poor” to find a new beginning. These stories remind us that words have power. They can preserve memory, challenge injustice, and inspire a nation to live up to its highest calling. And through these Jewish voices, the story of America has been shaped—line by line—by truth, courage, and hope.To learn more about God's people—from the days of the Bible through the present—visit The Fellowship's Learn Center.

1. The Living Legacy of Immigrant Savings Bank Records In 1896, Kate Murphy visited the "Irish Palace" in New York, a fundraising event featuring a giant map of Ireland filled with native soil. Moved by the experience, she knelt to kiss the ground of County Fermanagh, illustrating the enduring psychological bond Famine immigrants maintained with their homeland. Author Tyler Anbinder notes that much of what we know about these individuals comes from Immigrant Savings Bank records. These archives were used for security, requiring depositors to provide detailed biographical information, such as their mother's maiden name and arrival ship, to protect their meager savings from potential swindlers. 11820 LIMERICK

7. Pioneers, Soldiers, and the Irish Frontier Seeking better wages, many immigrants left New York for the frontier. John Colleen moved to Buffalo to work for the railroad, eventually seeing his children become successful lawyers and police captains. In Minnesota, Peter Lynch and his family worked for ten years in New York to save enough to purchase cheap government land, eventually building a thriving Irish farming enclave in a largely German region. Others, such as Edmund Butler, pursued careers in the U.S. Army, where he notably fought in the Indian Wars and played a pivotal role in the defeat of Crazy Horse in Montana. 72890 TIPERARY
