DAMION1Kohl's CEO Fired for Funneling Business to Romantic Partner 10Kohl's boss Ashley Buchanan tried to funnel business to a romantic partner and lost his job. It wasn't the first time their personal and professional lives had crossed.Kohl's fired Buchanan on Thursday after it discovered he had instructed the retailer to enter into a “highly unusual” business deal involving a woman with whom he has a romantic relationship, according to people familiar with the situation. The pair currently live together in an upscale golf community in the suburbs of Dallas.Buchanan met the woman, Chandra Holt, when they were both working at Walmart several years ago, the people said. His divorce proceedings show the two had a romantic relationship while he was the CEO of Michaels. The arts-and-crafts chain also tried to hire Holt during his tenure.A Kohl's board investigation by outside lawyers found that Buchanan violated the company's code of conduct in two instances with a vendor with whom he had a personal relationship and whom it didn't name, according to a regulatory filing. The filing said he directed the retailer to conduct business with a vendor founded by this person “on highly unusual terms,” and he caused the company to enter into a multimillion-dollar consulting agreement, where that person was part of the consulting team.On Thursday, Kohl's appointed Chairman Michael Bender as its interim CEO. He becomes the fourth CEO in three years at the department-store chain, which has been struggling with slumping sales.Nominating Committee:John E. Schlifske* (2011; 6%)Michael J. This is clearly not how our AI should operate,” Kaplan wrote on X, which is one of Meta's competitors. He referred to a 20-minute video in which Starbuck laid out his claims, including that Meta's AI falsely associated him with the Jan. 6 Capitol riot and the QAnon conspiracy theory.“We're sorry for the results it shared about you and that the fix we put in place didn't address the underlying problem,” Kaplan continued. “I'm working now with our product team to understand how this happened and explore potential solutions.”Bob Monks, fierce champion of shareholders against what he saw as boardroom failings 0An American pioneer of investor activism and better corporate governance.Monks emerged as a doughty champion of shareholders against what he saw as increasingly self-serving and complacent boardroom behaviourIn 1985 he founded Institutional Shareholder Services, which advises funds that own shares in multiple companies how best to exercise their voting power. He also helped create Lens, an activist investment fund, and GMI Ratings, a scrutineer of corporate behaviour which claimed to have downgraded BP before the Deepwater Horizon disaster, the insurance giant AIG before the 2008 financial crisis and News Corp before the phone-hacking scandal. His most celebrated campaign, in 1991, was an attempt to become a director of the underperforming retail and financial conglomerate Sears Roebuck, for which he ran a full-page ad in the Wall Street Journal depicting the existing Sears board as “non-performing assets”. Though his candidacy was rejected, many of his proposals for rationalisation were adopted, and he was able to declare: “Sears has been changed.”This low-profile CEO is the highest-paid in America with a $101 million paycheck that beat out Starbucks, Microsoft, and Apple chiefs 10Jim Anderson, a low-profile executive of Pennsylvania-based Coherent, which produces equipment for networks and lasersHere's what the dopey reporting missed:An originally announced golden hello equity award of $48M that magically morphed into $91M come proxy time.48% NO on Say on PayToo large Pay Committee: 6 members, led by Shaker Sadasivam, who was NOT up reelection this year. Remember that it was founded as a nonprofit. But in 2019, it set up a for-profit subsidiary to start raising money from investors to finance its eye-wateringly expensive A.I. research. Then last year, the company moved to turn itself into a for-profit entity in which the nonprofit held a stake but didn't have control. Now, OpenAI plans to turn its for-profit subsidiary into a public benefit corporation, which would still be controlled by the nonprofit, though the size of its stake remains undetermined. (Got all that?) Sam Altman, its C.E.O., said yesterday that the revised plan still gives his start-up “a more understandable structure to do the things that a company like us has to do.”The AI Industry Has a Huge Problem: the Smarter Its AI Gets, the More It's HallucinatingZuckerberg Says in Response to Loneliness Epidemic, He Will Create Most of Your Friends Using Artificial IntelligenceIn an interview with podcaster Dwarkesh Patel this week, Zuckerberg asserted that more people should be connecting with chatbots on a social level — because, in a striking line of argumentation, they don't have enough real-life friends. When asked if AI chatbots can help fight the loneliness epidemic, the billionaire painted a dystopian vision of a future in which we spend more time talking to AIs than flesh-and-blood humans."There's the stat that I always think is crazy, the average American, I think, has fewer than three friends," Zuckerberg told Patel. "And the average person has demand for meaningfully more, I think it's like 15 friends or something, right?""The average person wants more connectivity, connection, than they have," he concluded, hinting at the possibility that the discrepancy could be filled with virtual friends.Tesla Is Extremely Upset About Reporting That Its Board Has Been Looking Into Replacing Elon MuskLeading Independent Proxy Advisory Firm ISS Recommends Harley-Davidson Shareholders Vote "FOR ALL" of Harley-Davidson's Highly Qualified Director Nominees 10Targeted DirectorsCEO/Chair Zeitz (2007, 30%): who has already stepped down as CEOLead Director Norman Thomas Linebarger (2008, 13%): who is not independentSara Levinson (1996, 20%): the longest-tenured director Matt: HARD HITTING ANALYSIS“[I]t appears that his time in the role has been more positive than negative, which makes it hard to argue that his vote on a successor is worthless.”"[T]here are compelling reasons to believe that as a group [the targeted directors] still have a perspective that can be valuable.”"[I]t appears that the board initiated the [CEO search] process promptly…”, Target CEO's pay slashed by a whopping 45% after his disastrous mishandling of DEI 5Patrick Kennedy of The Minnesota Star Tribune used Total Realized Pay: down from $18.1M last year mostly because of a reduction in vested stock, $5.6M down from $13.6M. Zero Trust World 2025, hosted by ThreatLocker, is set to bring together IT professionals, business leaders, and cybersecurity practitioners for three days of hands-on labs, insightful discussions, and expert-led sessions. Taking place in Orlando, Florida, from February 19-21, this year's event promises an expanded agenda with cutting-edge topics, interactive workshops, and a unique approach to cybersecurity education. The Growth of Zero Trust WorldNow in its fifth year, Zero Trust World continues to grow exponentially, increasing in size by roughly 50% each year. Kieran Human, Special Projects Engineer at ThreatLocker, attributes this rapid expansion to the rising demand for cybersecurity solutions and the company's own growth. More IT leaders are recognizing the necessity of a Zero Trust approach—not just as a security measure, but as a fundamental philosophy for protecting their organizations. What to Expect: Hands-On Learning and Key DiscussionsOne of the biggest draws of Zero Trust World is its focus on hands-on experiences. Attendees can participate in hacking labs designed to teach them how cyber threats operate from an attacker's perspective. These include interactive exercises using rubber duckies—USB devices that mimic keyboards to inject malicious commands—demonstrating how easily cybercriminals can compromise systems. For those interested in practical applications of security measures, there will be sessions covering topics such as cookie theft, Metasploit, Windows and server security, and malware development. Whether an attendee is an entry-level IT professional or a seasoned security engineer, there's something to gain from these hands-on labs.High-Profile Speakers and Industry InsightsBeyond the labs, Zero Trust World 2025 will feature a lineup of influential speakers, including former Nintendo of America President and CEO Reggie Fils-Aimé, Chase Cunningham (known as Dr. Zero Trust), and ThreatLocker CEO Danny Jenkins. These sessions will provide strategic insights on Zero Trust implementation, industry challenges, and innovative cybersecurity practices. One of the key sessions to look forward to is “The Dangers of Shadow IT,” led by Ryan Bowman, VP of Solution Engineering at ThreatLocker. Shadow IT remains a major challenge for organizations striving to implement Zero Trust, as unauthorized applications and devices create vulnerabilities that security teams may not even be aware of. Stay tuned for a pre-event chat with Ryan coming your way soon.Networking, Certification, and MoreZero Trust World isn't just about education—it's also a prime networking opportunity. Attendees can connect during daily happy hours, the welcome and closing receptions, and a comic book-themed afterparty. ThreatLocker is even introducing a new cybersecurity comic book, adding a creative twist to the conference experience.A major highlight is the Cyber Hero Program, which offers attendees a chance to earn certification in Zero Trust principles. By completing the Cyber Hero exam, participants can have the cost of their event ticket fully refunded, making this an invaluable opportunity for those looking to deepen their cybersecurity expertise.A Unique Capture the Flag ChallengeFor those with advanced cybersecurity skills, the Capture the Flag challenge presents an exciting opportunity. The first person to successfully hack a specially designed, custom-painted high-end computer gets to take it home. This competition is expected to draw some of the best security minds in attendance, reinforcing the event's commitment to real-world application of cybersecurity techniques.Join the ConversationWith so much to see and do, Zero Trust World 2025 is shaping up to be an essential event for IT professionals, business leaders, and security practitioners. It's titled IBD's 100 Most Sustainable Companies For 2024. It's by Annie Stanley and found on investors.com. Here are some quotes from Ms. Stanley. “More than three quarters (77%) of individual investors around the world say they want to invest in companies or funds that aim to achieve market-rate financial returns while also considering positive social and/or environmental impact, according to a recent report from Morgan Stanley… To build IBD's 2024 list of the 100 Most Sustainable Companies, we started with Morningstar's U.S. and global Low Carbon Transition Leaders Indexes… The indexes target the best-scoring 50% of companies from each sector, by market capitalization… We selected the companies with the highest IBD Composite Rating — all with scores of 80 or better, putting them in the top 20%. Finally, we ranked the companies by the climate management score, using the IBD Composite Rating to break any ties. Topping the list this year is Moody's (MCO), demonstrating that a company that provides data on ESG factors can itself be a model of sustainability best practices. U.S. gas and electric utility Southern Co. (SO) is next on the list, and consumer giant Colgate-Palmolive (CL) is third… Two more utility companies, Alliant Energy (LNT) and NRG Energy (NRG), finished fourth and fifth, respectively, on this year's IBD 100 Most Sustainable Companies list.” End quotes. ------------------------------------------------------------- Additional Articles 1. It's titled 3 Sustainable Investing ETFs for Ethical Portfolios and by Abhishek Bhuyan appearing on stocknews.com. Here's a brief quote from the article. “Sustainable investing involves aligning investments with ethical and environmental values, focusing on companies that meet ESG (Environmental, Social, Governance) criteria. Large-cap blends are a good choice because they offer stability, diversification, and long-term growth potential. Companies with solid track records and ESG practices can provide strong returns while minimizing risk. To that end, investors could look to invest in sustainable large-cap ETFs such as the iShares MSCI KLD 400 Social ETF (DSI - Get Rating), Vanguard ESG U.S. Stock ETF (ESGV - Get Rating), and iShares ESG Aware MSCI USA ETF (ESGU - Get Rating) for an ethical portfolio.” End quote. ------------------------------------------------------------- Ending Comment These are my top news stories with their stock and fund tips for this podcast “Sustainable ETFs for Sustainable Investors. Here are some quotes from the article. “1) Vanguard ESG U.S. Stock ETF (ESGV) The Vanguard ESG U.S. Stock ETF tries to match the performance of the FTSE U.S. All Cap Choice Index and screens for certain ESG criteria. Best ESG ETFs, Carbon Capture Stocks, More… Now carbon capture has been gaining increasing attention as a means to reduce CO2. Hence, this article might interest many of you. It's titled TOP 5 CARBON CAPTURE STOCKS FOR SUSTAINABLE INVESTMENT. It's by the Ritz Herald and found on their site at ritzherald.com. This innovative system is designed to significantly reduce various key parameters, including CAPEX & OPEX (CO2 Cost), emissions, effluent, waste, chemical, and water consumption, as well as plant size and labor requirements.” End quotes. ------------------------------------------------------------- 3. Best ESG ETFs, Carbon Capture Stocks, More… The next article appeared on the renowned Morningstar.com site. It's titled 2 Sustainable Index Stocks With Room to Grow and is by Muskaan Hemrajani and Leslie P. Norton. Here's a little of what they said about their picks. “WestRock and Carnival surged in 2023 but still look cheap today… That's our conclusion after perusing the Morningstar US Sustainability Index, which seeks to reduce ESG risk while tracking the Morningstar US Large-Mid Cap Index… 1) WestRock WRK  Morningstar Rating: 3 Stars Fair Value: $55.00 ESG Risk Rating: Medium Price (as of April 8, 2024): $49.25 WestRock manufactures corrugated packaging and consumer packaging products, such as folding cartons and paperboard. It accounts for roughly 20% of the North American containerboard market and is the second-largest producer. The company has returned nearly 60% in the past year… Spencer Liberman, Morningstar equity analyst, writes: ‘WestRock is exposed to some environmental, social, and governance risks, including carbon emissions from the firm's operation and sizable water usage for production. However, we don't believe these risks could result in material value destruction.' 2) Carnival CCL Morningstar Rating: 5 Stars Fair Value: $27.50 ESG Risk Rating: Medium Price (as of April 8, 2024): $15.66 Carnival is trading at a 45% discount. Carnival is the largest global cruise company, with 92 ships in service at the end of fiscal 2023. Carnival's brands attracted nearly 13 million guests in 2019, prior to covid-19, a level it has reached again in 2023… Writes Jamie Katz, equity analyst at Morningstar, in a report. ‘Carnival's first-quarter performance suggests continuing demand momentum. Net yields were up 18%, helped by an 11% increase in occupancy, along with ticket and onboard gains.'” End quotes. ------------------------------------------------------------- 4. Best ESG ETFs, Carbon Capture Stocks, More… Many of you are likely invested in the stocks covered in this next article titled Enphase Energy vs. Plug Power: Which Alternative Energy Stock Does Wall Street Like Best? It's by Ebube Jones at Barcharts and found on theglobeandmail.com site. Now some quotes from the article. “The Case for Enphase Energy Stock (ENPH) With a market cap of $16 billion, Enphase Energy is a big name in the solar energy game. They're all about making solar power more efficient and user-friendly, offering tech like microinverters and energy storage systems to both homeowners and business customers… At current levels… Enphase stock is priced at a discount… Out of 34 analysts… Enphase has landed a ‘moderate buy' rating overall… The average target price is pegged at $125.38, suggesting a potential 4.4% upside from here.  The Case for Plug Power Stock (PLUG) Plug Power is making waves in the hydrogen and fuel cell tech scene, focusing on creating hydrogen fuel cell systems that could replace the usual batteries in electric-powered equipment and vehicles. They've got a lineup of tech that includes fuel cells, hydrogen fueling stations, and even their own green hydrogen production.  Wall Street's take on Plug Power is a cautious ‘hold.' The average target price for PLUG is $5.30, about 79% north of current levels.  The Verdict: Enphase Edges Out Plug Power Enphase Energy seems to be the Wall Street favorite of these two clean energy stocks… Plug Power, on the other hand, is stuck at a ‘hold,' and has yet to turn a profit… But, keep an eye on Plug Power too - if they can get those hydrogen plants up and running and start turning a profit, they could be a serious contender in the longer haul.” End quotes. ------------------------------------------------------------- 5. Best ESG ETFs, Carbon Capture Stocks, More… I'm going to end with this article titled Al Gore's Hedge Fund Loves This $445 Billion Stock. It's by the Motley Fool and seen on theglobeandmail.com. “Al Gore, the former U.S. vice president, co-founded Generation Investment Management in 2004. Today, the firm manages nearly $50 billion, all of which is directed to investments that the firm believes won't destroy the planet… Where is Al Gore's investment firm putting money to work today? One of its biggest investments -- a stake worth roughly $560 million -- is in a company nearly everyone knows well: Mastercard (NYSE: MA)… During the past two decades, Mastercard stock has risen more than 10,000% in value… Gore's firm has owned Mastercard stock since the second quarter of 2022. Don't be surprised to still see it in the portfolio many years down the road.” End quotes. ------------------------------------------------------------- Other Honorable Mentions – not in any order 1) Title: How First Solar Crushed Its Solar Energy Rivals on finance.yahoo.com. How Bengaluru Became India's Silicon Valley

Backstage with Millionaires

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 24, 2021 15:07

In today's video, we explore how Bengaluru became India's Silicon Valley: Foundation of Bengaluru as Gandubhūmi or Land of Heroes: Kempe Gowda, a chieftain of the Vijayanagara Empire in the 16th century, laid the foundation of what we now know today as the city of Bengaluru, although at the time, it was called gandubhūmi or Land of Heroes. The chieftain, of course, had no idea how fitting this name would prove to be nearly half a millennium later. Jamsetji Tata's dream to set up a world-class university: Jamsetji Tata, the founder of the Tata group wanted to set up a world-class university in Mumbai but then Viceroy of India Lord Curzon chose Bengaluru to be the right place for this university. But Jamsetji Tata passed away before he could see IISc open in Bengaluru. Role of HAL and ISRO in building Bengaluru as the hub of innovation: IISc played a pivotal role in attracting talent in and around Bengaluru which lead to the formation of HAL – India's first aerospace company and ISRO being set up in Bengaluru in the 20th century. This helped develop Bengaluru into the manufacturing hub of the country and a hotbed for innovation. Ram Krishna Baliga and India's Silicon Valley – India's first electronic city: A student of IISc named Ram Krishna Baliga was busy developing residential colonies for BEL when he realised that Bengaluru was the perfect place to set up India's own electronics manufacturing hub – it had everything talent, innovation and a thriving manufacturing ecosystem. So, he started building India's first Electronic City in Bengaluru – all but cementing Bengaluru's place as the innovation hub of the country. Infosys comes to Bengaluru: Until now, most of the projects and companies were driven by the government and focused on the manufacturing sector but soon Infosys became one of India's first IT companies to set up its headquarter in Bengaluru and with the success of Infosys, more and more companies like Wipro and TCS decided to set up shop in Bengaluru to access quality talent and its thriving ecosystem. More IT companies and more tech talent flocks to Bengaluru: Once India's economy was liberalised in 1991, not just domestic IT companies but international tech giants like Texas Instruments, IBM, Sun Microsystems, and Intel flocked to Bengaluru – bringing with them more talent and laying the foundations of Bengaluru as the Silicon Valley of India.

It's the 200th Episode of The BibRave Podcast featuring… well, everyone! It's hard to believe it's been almost 4 years since we kicked off this project. During past anniversaries we've discussed our favorite episodes, and this time we pull out specific clips from our favs from the past 200 episodes. We start at the very beginning by sharing how the podcast began along with background on our musical interludes. We then dive into some of our most inspirational guests and stories - from Dave McGillvray to Bart Yasso. A large part of the podcast has also featured some key episodes debunking common myths from cholesterol, inflammation, intermittent fasting, and more. And the episode ends with some open and honest moments from our guests and from BibRave HQ. Thank you so much for taking this journey with us.

I already know you love podcast, so in this episode I share a few mine. I will also share a few books, apps, and videos that have shaped my business and guide my everyday activity. There is no magic bullet to success. The key to success is layered. One of those layers is learning…but more importantly unlearning. In order to unlearn the negative programming society gave you (without your permission) you have to put new information in. The resources I give you in this episode will help you do just that.   For more episode notes go to http://kinecorder.com/52 How long have you been trying to find the confidence to go “all in” on building and selling your coaching program? Six months? A year? More? It took me a while to really get my business off the ground too. I was confused, overwhelmed, and felt like I was competing with all the other coaches out there. I was scared I would fail! And guess what, I pretty much did. My first coaching business crashed with the market, back in 2009. BUT I had to remind myself, the business failed I didn’t. Now I have 7-income streams (most of them passive), a thriving coaching business, and hundreds of students in my courses, I’ve learned a thing or two And I want to share all that with YOU! Join me in my upcoming FREE masterclass: 3-Behind-the-Scenes Secrets to One-on-One Coaching Success in 2019 and Beyond. Eating dumplings, it turns out, is more complicated than just sticking them in your dumpling hole, as Coté found out in Bangkok thanks to a Singaporean friend (https://www.linkedin.com/in/dennis-sze-641a5b85/). We’re live-to-tape from DevOpsDays Jakarta this episode, just Coté and Matt Ray. We discuss the Pentagon’s stubbornness of (seemingly) picking just one cloud provider for their major cloud project and then have an oddly lengthy discussion of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marvel_Cinematic_Universe). This episode brought to you by: Datadog! This episode is sponsored by Datadog, a monitoring platform for cloud-scale infrastructure and applications. Built by engineers, for engineers, Datadog provides visibility into more than 200 technologies, including AWS, Chef, and Docker, with built-in metric dashboards and automated alerts. Week’s wunderkammer SmugMug buys flickr (https://www.theregister.co.uk/2018/04/23/oath_sells_flickr_to_smugmug/) - Coté can’t download all his photos. DevOpsDays Jakarta, 2018 (https://www.devopsdays.org/events/2018-jakarta/). Relevant to your interests US military says “get of my lawn, you kids” to AWS mono-usage (https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2018-04-16/pentagon-sticks-with-single-cloud-contract-but-doesn-t-say-why) ‘Rival contractors complain that the winner-take-all approach favors Amazon.com Inc., the biggest supplier of cloud services. But Pentagon officials made clear they have little patience for continuing debate over the issue. In response to a question on the “rationale for a single award for this contract,” the answer posted was blunt: “This rationale is not going to be published at this time.”’ More: “It was a decision the department made based on its needs, so adding context there doesn’t benefit us.” But, actually, it’s just one pick for now: “The contract, known as JEDI -- for the the Joint Enterprise Defense Infrastructure Cloud Program -- won’t prevent the Defense Department from working with other cloud vendors in the future.” IBM doth protest too much? Check out Bloomberg’s layman’s definition of cloud: “Cloud services -- in which computing power and storage are hosted in remote data centers run by a third-party company rather than on-site in locally owned machines -- can make it easier for large organizations to move and integrate data across different platforms, quickly expand the data storage it needs based on usage and make system-wide security upgrades to software.” Not too shabby, and it thankfully doesn’t mention THE CYBER. That was all he needed to hear; Peter decided to take his health back into his own hands. He started doing some of his own research, he began looking outside the box of traditional medicine, dieting, and exercise for any new practices that had possibly not hit the health and wellness radar for the masses. Microsoft Azure jumped from 16 percent to 20 percent, and Google's share increased from 10 percent to 12 percent, they said.” Also, more spending forecasts from Gartner (https://www.gartner.com/newsroom/id/3845563): https://d2mxuefqeaa7sj.cloudfront.net/s_EF670144310531D7873957CB4E18505EF5DF967F587843FC89C0EE55E5BFF033_1516204339433_image.png The move to SaaS continuing: “Organizations are expected to increase spending on enterprise application software in 2018, with more of the budget shifting to software as a service (SaaS). The growing availability of SaaS-based solutions is encouraging new adoption and spending across many subcategories, such as financial management systems (FMS), human capital management (HCM) and analytic applications (https://www.gartner.com/smarterwithgartner/analyst-answers-the-biggest-challenges-for-data-analytics-leaders-today/).” Really, doesn’t that make the most sense for where to spend most of your priority? Clears out the under-brush. Perhaps there should be a split between “innovation” (customer IT) and “keep the lights on.” I often think bi-modal got lost in that distinction. Hey, that sounds like Big Data! ‘"Looking at some of the key areas driving spending over the next few years, Gartner forecasts $2.9 trillion in new business value opportunities (https://www.gartner.com/newsroom/id/3837763) attributable to AI by 2021, as well as the ability to recover 6.2 billion hours of worker productivity," said Mr. Lovelock. "That business value is attributable to using AI to, for example, drive efficiency gains, create insights that personalize the customer experience, entice engagement and commerce, and aid in expanding revenue-generating opportunities as part of new business models driven by the insights from data."’ 451’s surveys show more IT spending too (https://blogs.the451group.com/techdeals/investment-banking/every-reason-to-shop-yet-tech-companies-still-empty-handed/): “fully 50% of the 872 respondents said their company is giving a ‘green light’ for IT spending. That was the highest reading since 2007, and 13 basis points higher than the average survey response for the month of November for the previous five years” The exciting world of monitoringobservability With Loggly, SolarWinds scoops up another log service (https://451research.com/report-short?entityId=94096): “With the acquisition of Loggly, SolarWinds obtains an asset that was slow in getting started but has hit a patch of growth recently. As of September, we believe the company was on track to finish 2017 with roughly $10m in billings, up from mid-single digits in 2016. Founded in 2009 with a mission of offering a SaaS-based, easy-to-use logging product with helpful visualizations built using advanced analytics, Loggly had raised $47m in venture capital, including a $11.5m series D round in June 2016.” They estimate ~3,000 paying customers. Microsoft gets serious about monitoring (https://451research.com/report-short?entityid=94076&type=mis&alertid=975&contactid=0033200001wgkckaa2), pulling together it’s different things Nancy at 451 reports: “Microsoft's vision is to deliver tools that can offer a holistic view of services to application architects looking to optimize their software; performance information and debugging capabilities for DevOps and ops pros; insight into KPIs for executives; and information about customer usage to product owners. Microsoft doesn't yet have a cohesive offering for all of the above, but it has the pieces to enable it and has begun delivering on some integrations across products.” You may recall that Datadog acquired Logmatic.io back in the Fall (https://www.datadoghq.com/blog/datadog-acquires-logmatic-io/). The integrated offering includes Cisco's Hyperflex hyperconverged infrastructure and Nexus 9k networking. Cisco is also leveraging its networking (CSR) and security (Stealthwatch Cloud) portfolio to ensure a consistent environment across the hybrid cloud. Google's Kubernetes container runtime uses Apigee to consume and manage APIs, as well as Google's range of cloud services, including machine learning and visual recognition. The open source Istio service management platform is key to the offering, supported in CloudCenter, providing traffic management, observability, policy enforcement and service identity and security for microservices. There will also be integrations to AppDynamics. Solution engineering efforts are underway, and Cisco and Google are working on predefined statements of work that can be executed by both companies' direct sales teams and by the partner channels. The joint offering will be fully supported by the Cisco Technical Assistance Center. The Cisco-Google partnership on hybrid cloud is non-exclusive, but Google is working closely with Cisco on the joint engineering work around open hybrid cloud.” Taking Stock of Cloud Application Platforms (http://rishidot.com/krishnan/platforms/taking-stock-of-application-platforms/): basically, he expects it to all go kubernetes. LINKS Humus and Clay... http://wp.me/p5Cqpo-eAT John Seymour Masanobu Fukuoka Daikon radish Start your own Organic Garden: 7 tips! http://wp.me/p5Cqpo-eB5 Sustainability Through Compost Tea. http://wp.me/p5Cqpo-eDW Ten Acres Enough **** This is the World Organic News for the week ending 10th of April 2017. Jon Moore reporting! This week we focus on the soil! From the blog of LaToya M. Crick Soil Food Web Consultant comes a post on humus and clay. Quote: Clay and humus play an important role in soil structure and plant growth, however, too much of one of them is frustrating and too little of the other is a pending death sentence. What is clay? Clay in soil is a fine-grained natural rock or soil material and appears in deposits due to weatherization. ( If you are living in Brazoria County, Texas then you are living on a deposit- ha!) Clay can appear in soil in various colors from white to dull grey or brown to deep orange-red. A clay particle is finer than silt and sand and according to geologist and soil scientist,  a clay particle is less than 2 micrometer. And from further in the post: Now, what about Humus? Humus is the end product of decomposed organic matter that was had by soil microbes. It can be seen as the chocolate/black gold of the earth and acts as an anchor for soil nutrients. It appears in color ranging from dark brown to black and smells earthy and is fluffy to the touch. Humus is negatively charged and has a high cation-exchange-capacity (CEC) that helps the soil retain water and positively charged elements that are beneficial to plant health. End Quote The funny thing about clay and all soils for that matter is a thing I learned from John Seymour. It your clay content is too high, add organic matter to your soil. Organic matter, it turns out feeds and creates humus. At the other end of the soil scale: sandy soil the solution is to add (pauses for effect) organic matter which it turns out feeds and creates humus. You can see where this is heading. Clay soils have their own particular needs when it comes to incorporating organic matter. The drill in the olden days, the 1970s, was to dig deeply and bury organic matter. Can you guess what the solution is today? Yep, raised bed no-dig gardens. It turns out the soil is capable of pulling the organic matter down into the clay soils and invigorating them.  Clay pans can be a problem. That is hardened clay layers under the level at which the shovel or the plough reached. On acreage sized land units, a ripper can be employed to shatter the pan. This lets water and organic matter into the soil profile. This is especially beneficial when the rips are along the contour lines of the paddock. Masanobu Fukuoka used an alternative method the release these clay pans. He broadcast daikon radish seeds. His compacted clay problem was in an orchard so that ripping was not an option. These radishes grow upto a metre in length and as thick as a man’s forearm. By their very growth habits they loosen compacted soils. Once loosen and with organic matter spread on top, either in no-dog garden beds or spread across paddocks by slashing them or grazing them, the process of humus creation can occur. Clearly this is not a “quick fix” solution but it is one which works with Nature and her rhythms. When that occurs we are moving in the right direction. I might also add here that artificial fertilisers will destroy humic acid in very little time. This means more are needed in the next growing season and so on. The slower Natural way is less expensive too as a rule. Having sorted your soils the next step is to garden. DR. EDDY BETTERMANN MD delivered a post: Start your own Organic Garden: 7 tips! These are useful and so I’ll repeat them here to pique your interest. Have a read of the article if you need more on this. Link is, of course, in the show notes. Plan your garden before planting your crops, it’ll help you reap the best harvest possible. Less is More It may seem like a good idea to plant every edible plant that you love to eat… but it may be better to start with a small, manageable garden in the beginning. Choose Productive Plants Choose plants that grow well in your climate and geography. Think locally. Share and Barter If you buy a large packet of seeds and have extras, share with your friends and neighbors. Go Organic With Your supplies Organic seeds can be bought locally or by mail order. Do not use chemical pesticides, herbicides, or any other synthetic chemicals. Complement Your Plants Research traditional methods of natural gardening to grow plants that complement one another such as permaculture. Have Fun! Gardening can be an incredibly grounding family affair. Having your garden up and running, the question of feeding or fertilising comes to mind. The blog Permie Flix has a video post this week entitled: ECOSOIL SUSTAINABLE FARMING WITH COMPOST TEA. If that title doesn’t tick all the boxes then I don’t know what will. The video runs for some 30 plus minutes and is well worth your time. Compost teas are a specialised form of liquid fertiliser. The have their adherents and I too am one of them. A particularly interesting book: Ten Acres Enough set in the USA state of New Jersey and written in the 1870s gives a good account of how to make and use liquid fertilisers. I’ve included a link to a pdf copy of this book. Whilst it has financial figures from its time which are basically meaningless now, the how to information is useful. A word of caution, the author advocates for ploughing bare fields between produce crops to increase soil moisture. Apart from that, he makes good sense. Back to the post ECOSOIL SUSTAINABLE FARMING WITH COMPOST TEA. This video is produced with a smallholder, farmer in mind but the principles and techniques can be down scaled to the garden or you could join with fellow gardeners to create larger volumes to use amongst yourselves. I suspect a community garden would also be a good place to centrally produce these teas in bulk. They feed the humus creation process at a good rate of knots. Nudging Nature without pushing her to breaking point. So look after your soil, grow food in it and feed that soil with liquid fertilisers for a blooming good garden! And that brings us to the end of this week’s podcast. If you’ve liked what you heard, please tell everyone you know any way you can! I’d also really appreciate a review on iTunes. This may or may not help others to find us but it gives this podcaster an enormous thrill! Thanks in advance! Any suggestions, feedback or criticisms of the podcast or blog are most welcome. email me at podcast@worldorganicnews.com. Thank you for listening and I'll be back in a week. **** LINKS Humus and Clay... http://wp.me/p5Cqpo-eAT John Seymour Masanobu Fukuoka Daikon radish Start your own Organic Garden: 7 tips! http://wp.me/p5Cqpo-eB5 Sustainability Through Compost Tea. http://wp.me/p5Cqpo-eDW Ten Acres Enough
