Certified Nursing Assistants. They are the lifeblood of so much of what we do in healthcare, particularly in elder care, and yet they rarely share the limelight with the doctors, surgeons, and specialists.  Our guest today, Peter Murphy Lewis, is a documentary film maker who started out just trying to educate the Nebraska government on the shortage of CNAs in their state. What started as a single, 20-min documentary has turned into multiple seasons of the hit show, People Worth Caring About. The docuseries highlights the work of CNAs in nursing homes, sharing their stories in order to change perceptions about the work they do and demonstrate the value and reward of this much-needed profession.  Peter Murphy Lewis is a healthcare advocate and former CNA himself. His work spans television, podcasting, and marketing, with a focus on caregiving and long-term care. Born in Kansas, Peter's path took a dramatic — and deeply personal — turn when a health scare forced him to reassess his priorities. What followed was a journey from academia and international politics to global media, entrepreneurship, and eventually founding Strategic Pete — a platform dedicated to helping small businesses and entrepreneurs grow. Now, Peter uses his storytelling skills to challenge misconceptions about caregiving, aiming to reshape how society values care and those who provide it.

Phil Hornby is an experienced product leader, coach, and technologist whose mission is to help product leaders think clearly, make strong decisions, and take powerful action that drives high-impact outcomes. He's a regular speaker at product events and is co-host of the “Talking Roadmaps” YouTube channel and podcast. If Phil were asked to distill product management down to its core, he'd tell us, “We're paid to have an opinion.” Not simply putting a ‘licked finger to the wind,’ but trusting your experience and intuition to make high-quality decisions. Ah, and also to remember: there's a difference between a high-quality decision and the “right” decision. There's no way to guarantee that we make the right decision, Phil says, but there're plenty of ways we can improve our odds. Here’s what we learned: Empowerment Is ‘Making Decisions that Stick' At its most fundamental level, doing Product is decision making, Phil says. “That that’s like the whole heart of it. When we use the term empowered to describe product teams, we talk about their ability to make decisions that stick. If you can’t make a decision stick, then you’re not empowered. It’s really boiled down to this: empowerment is at the heart of all product work. Trust = Character + Competence Trust is an essential component in any relationship. Perhaps even more so in the often high-stakes world of product management. Phil's hypothesis is that high-quality decision making cannot occur in its absence. “Trust comes down to two core components,” he says, “character and competence. You want others to look at you and say, ‘That’s someone I can trust.' That’s the character…. Then there’s competence: ‘Do I think you can make it? Have you got the skills to make that high-quality decision? And those two things combine to provide trust. ‘We're Paid to Have an Opinion' – Evidence-informed Decisionmaking Phil talks about being evidence informed versus data driven, because “data can tell you anything. As product managers,” he adds, “I can massage the data to show whatever the heck I want it to do. “We absolutely need to bring data into our decision-making process,” Phil continues. “Data is a form of quantitative evidence, but then we need the anecdotes and other feedback to complete the equation. But we’re humans, we also have intuition. This business of Australia tightening up its gun laws feels like it runs the risk of distracting from the bigger problems over there. I don't think guns were the problem on Sunday. Australia already has some of the tightest gun laws in the world. This is a race relations problem. This attack was predictable. There was no shortage of warnings. Jewish businesses have been set alight in recent years, synagogues have been attacked, obviously Jewish people have been hassled, Israeli people have been denied customer service in Melbourne, cars have been set alight in an anti-Semitic attack and two nurses in Sydney lost their jobs for bragging on TikTok that they would kill Jewish patients. There is a timeline on Time magazine's website of all the events leading up to Sunday that is confronting. The Albanese Government knew there was a problem brewing. They asked the special envoy on anti-Semitism to give them a set of recommendations. For the last six months they've had those recommendations and done nothing. So, tightening up gun laws is never a bad thing. Checking in on a licence holder every few years rather than never must be a good thing. This terror attack in Sydney is what everyone else has been saying it is: absolutely horrific. Antisemitic terrorism. Sadly, this type of attack is happening and will keep happening more frequently, according to intelligence agencies. And the worst part is that it's almost impossible to stop. Australia has what the world considers the 'gold standard' gun control. After the Port Arthur massacre, they tightened up the rules. But it still has more guns now than it did back in the 90s - both in number and per capita. Guns don't cause terror attacks of course. For that, you'll need radial fanatics with a screw loose. The internet is full of them. It's a great place to meet like-minded people, sadly. We run very expensive security agencies in most Western countries whose job it is to track people down and prevent Bondi beach events. In this case, ASIO knew about the son with the gun in Sydney as early as six years ago. There were links to ISIS. But it didn't stop him, did it? Brenton Tarrant was posting about the God-awful things he was going to do up to a year beforehand online, but wasn't stopped, either. Samsudeen - the guy who slit peoples' throats while they shopped for groceries in New Lynn - he was actually being watched and followed at the time and even he still managed to stab eight innocent people. Some argue migration is the problem. They say Jews and Muslims have been fighting for centuries and that's where the problem lies. Except mass shootings are perpetrated by all different sorts of people for all different sorts of reasons. There's left-wing extremism - the death of Charlie Kirk, the insurance assassin, the attempt on Trump are all suspected of being motivated by far-left extremists. And then you've got right-wing extremism and radical Islamic terrorists. And then there's just completely crazy people who seem to have no motive, they just want to be famous or kill people for a body count like life is some video game. The sad, disturbing, uncomfortable part of this attack is that it won't be the last, and there's very little it seems we can actually do to stop them. In case number 19 CR. 490 (RMB), the United States government brought formal criminal charges against Jeffrey Epstein, leading to a court-issued Decision & Order Remanding Defendant. This order came after Epstein's arrest in July 2019 on federal sex trafficking charges involving underage girls. The court reviewed Epstein's bail proposal—which included offering his Manhattan townhouse as collateral and agreeing to strict conditions—but ultimately found that no set of conditions could guarantee his appearance at trial or ensure the safety of the community. The decision emphasized both the serious nature of the charges and Epstein's substantial financial resources and international ties, which posed a clear flight risk.As a result, the court ordered Epstein to be remanded to custody, meaning he was to remain in federal detention without bail until trial. The ruling rejected arguments from Epstein's legal team that he could be trusted to comply with any pretrial release conditions.
