Perspective with Heather du Plessis-Allan: Was David Seymour right about Air New Zealand going 'woke'?

So David Seymour's right about Air New Zealand - but he's also wrong about Air New Zealand. Before we get to why, let me bring you up to speed on what's happened with the airline today, because the news is not good. Air New Zealand has posted a half-year result showing a $59 million pre-tax loss, which is slightly worse than expected. And to be fair to Air New Zealand, a lot of this really isn't their fault. They've had not one, but two engine types in their fleet causing them trouble. And the economic downturn we're experiencing in New Zealand - the worst in most of our lifetimes, you have to go back more than 50 years to find anything as bad - directly affects their earnings. If we don't have money, we're certainly not spending money on flights. But some of this is their fault. They're squandering customer loyalty with poor on-time performance and a tired, diminished Koru Club offering. And this is where David Seymour is right when he says, “Go woke, go broke.” Because part of the reason Air New Zealand is losing customers to Jetstar is that there are people who no longer want to pay for Koru Club. The offering has slid from the good old days. You can't even - and this bugs people more than the airline ever seemed to realise - go into the lounge, ask for a coffee, and take it away like you can at a café. There are no takeaway coffees because Air New Zealand doesn't want paper cups going on planes. Paper cups are bad for the environment… when you're flying planes. They've wasted time and money trialling an electric aircraft they don't actually know how to integrate into their fleet. And they're constantly lecturing the government about sustainable aviation fuel - SAF - which is more expensive than standard jet fuel, and standard jet fuel is already extremely expensive right now. But here's where David Seymour is wrong - he says the solution is to sell down the Government's 51 percent stake in Air New Zealand. We can't do that. We are an isolated island nation. There are only two ways to get here - by boat or by plane, and we all know which one people actually use. We need to own those planes to make sure they keep flying. If we learned anything during COVID, it's that Air New Zealand effectively became a logistics lifeline and repatriation service for the entire country. So yes, David Seymour is part right and part wrong. We do need Air New Zealand to stop the distractions and start doing its job properly. And we do need it to remain in New Zealand hands.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

There was a huge reaction to yesterday's Politics Wednesday segment on homelessness and move-on orders. Labour argues homelessness is up dramatically and there is nowhere for these people to go. New numbers released today show that simply, in Auckland anyway, is not true. Advocates working in the area tell us numbers are down 29%. Part of that drop is due to Government funding in October of last year to improve outreach, as well as the provision of 207 housing places in the Housing First programme. So, like a lot of other issues being raised as being disasters, the truth tells a different story. As I have said, Labour is going to lose the election anyway. But their growing problem is reality is smashing directly into their ideology. Their plan to this point, and it was reflected well in the Hipkins so-called "State of the Nation" speech, is to tell you everything is a mess, it's all broken, it's all been cocked up and is going backwards. The theory is if they set the mood right what they have to offer doesn't need to be a thing, hence they have no policies outside their capital gains tax. You're in a funk and you vote the Government out because they have convinced you life sucks. Except the evidence that it isn't, is starting to arrive, and in some volume. Growth is up, spending is up, confidence is up, performance in schools is up, kids are actually turning up to school, large industrial relations deals are being signed so strikes are off, crime is down, and now homelessness is down as well. By November employment will have turned and the picture, broadly, will be complete. It's hard to compete against good economic news and it's hard to compete against positive social news like the homelessness stats. And it's really hard, and this is where Labour and the Greens are blowing it, against the wider will and view of the populous. On move-on orders, like the gang patches and like the ram raids, crack downs are popular. Defending crooks and drug addicts and trouble makers is not a vote getter. Perspective with Heather du Plessis-Allan: Could we pass a transport rule that reflects some common sense?

The Government announced today it wants to shake up the road rules a little - allowing kids under the age of 12 to ride their bikes on the footpath, and letting e-scooters use cycleways. Now, it might surprise you to learn that both of those things are against the rules. Kids aren't allowed on footpaths on their bikes unless the wheel diameter is roughly the length of a ruler or smaller, and e-scooters are not allowed in cycle lanes. And it probably does surprise you, because we do these things all the time, don't we? We've got a cycleway near our house and scooters are on that thing constantly - because frankly, it's the safest place for a scooter to be. I took my boy and his six and nine-year-old cousins for a bike ride to the skate park at the beach during summer. They rode on the footpath. Two of those bikes were definitely against the rules - far too big. So you could probably characterise Chris Bishop's proposed changes as simply updating the law to reflect what people are already doing. But I have a question for you - Why have an age limit for kids at all? We're hardly going to stick to this rule, are we? We're hardly going to tell a 12-year-old that the day they turn 13, they suddenly have to get off the footpath and cycle down Ponsonby Road. In fact, we regularly see older adults riding their bikes along Ponsonby Road, past the cafés. We just step out of the way. It's an adult on an adult-sized bike - they're courteous, they're surrounded by pedestrians and they go slowly. So here's my proposal - when we change the rules, why don't we take the age limit out altogether? Don't have an age limit. Simply say - we'd prefer you to cycle on the road but if you can't do that safely, you're welcome to use the footpath. If you do, please go slowly and give pedestrians the right of way. Our goal is that no one dies on the road and no one gets hurt on the footpath. Maybe we could just pass a rule that reflects what we're already doing - and what also reflects a bit of common sense. On the 290th episode of the MalloryBrosPodcast, the Bros start with a realization that all of you who have been watching us for weeks, months and even YEARS have collected so much information on them and seen so many moments that you're basically FAMILY. So Welcome back FAM, of course the Bros start with Recap of the weekend. Terrance reflects on a big weekend of watching Boxing with Ryan Garcia and Claressa Sheilds leading to back to back fight nights. Terrell reflects on a trip to Mike's with the family and preparing for another snowfall on the east coast. Some of you are watching this under SNOW as you read this. Anyway, the Bros start things off recaping Baby Keem's newest project "Ca$ino" that dropped this past weekend. Coming off a Grammy Nominated "The Melodic Blue" the Bros speak on how he delievered a solid proeject that fell a little short of their expectations on first listen. The also talk about how the project has improved on second listen, but people online seem to be split on Kendrick Lamar's feature on the project. This sparks a big conversation about Kendrick's influence on the public reception to the album and Terrance starts a conversation on how these days you really can't have an opinon. In his words, "you're either like it or SHUT UP". The Bros have a good CONTROLLED back and fourth about this but ultimately agree .. these days, giving even your OPINION takes some heavy considersation before letting fly. Next the Bros talk about the recent viral situation at the BAFTA Awards where a man with Tourettes syndrome yells the N Word in the middle of the ceremoney as Michael B Jordan and Delroy Lindo present the first award of the night. It was a horrible situation for eveeryone involved and thanks to the broadcast not being edited or cut like it COULD HAVE ... this set social media on fire. The Bros have a great conversation about the situation, educating each other on the seriousness of Tourettes Syndrome and understanding the "Coprolalia" that comes with it while also focusing on the DISRESPECT that CAN'T be overlooked because of the disability. This is what made this situation one out of a movie. It's a good convo! The Bros talk about the crazy situation in Mexico with the death of a Cartel leader and the mayhem happening throughout because of it. Next, the Bros discuss the recent passing of Eric Dane, a beloved actor from Grey's Anatomy and Euphoria who died from a short battle with ALS. The guys discuss this haunting disease and the speed of it and turn the conversation into one about showing up and making moments count. NETFLIX has announced that we're getting Floyd Mayweather vs Manny Paquiao 2 in Septmember this year. This comes a week after Floyd announced he was fighting Mike Tyson in Exhibition, and UN-retiring to purse a big event. The Bros discuss the Sport of Boxing and how it's seemlingly honoring the money more than the sport. The biggest question is are they wrong if we all are tuning in and it's keeping boxing exciting? Lastly, the bros talk about the late passing of Rondale Moore, a 25 year old NFL Wide Reciever who took his life this past week. This is the most important part of the podcast episode. The bros talk about mental health and it's importance, but more importantly they discuss how they deal with their OWN mental health in moments current and past and share a strategy you can use with you friends and family that might REALLY help. Terrance says "The most toxic part is keeping it in" and he's right. Of course the Bros finish with MOVIE ...SUGGESTION... OF ... THE WEEK! Another week with the Bros, see you next Tuesday! Booming arrivals, stubborn humidity – but dull and overpriced? Synopsis: On Wednesdays, The Straits Times takes a hard look at Singapore's social issues of the day with guests. Singapore’s tourism pitch is not just about selling its picture-perfect skyline; it’s also about showcasing its rich multiculturalism, leaning into its talent in hosting world-class events, and taking visitors on a journey to discover how a young nation is defining its own identity. In this episode, senior columnist Tan Dawn Wei speaks with Ms Jean Ng, assistant chief executive of Experience Development at the Singapore Tourism Board, and Mr Matin Mohdari, head of Public Policy for Southeast and South Asia at online travel company Expedia Group about Chinese traveller sentiment, events as demand drivers, cooling the city, and how AI could reshape tourism by 2040. They unpack Singapore's 2025 performance, why “hot, boring, expensive” perceptions among some Chinese travellers matter, and how STB is adjusting for younger, social-media-led free-and-easy visitors through partnerships, IP, and precinct storytelling. The conversation also looks at practical ways to soften the tropical heat, what Singapore offers versus rival Asian cities, and the balance between premium experiences and everyday affordability. Finally, they explore Tourism 2040 – the roadmap to hitting between $47 and $50 billion in tourism receipts by then – and how AI can boost productivity behind the scenes, while keeping the human stories that make a place emotionally resonant. Marilyn Waring. Remember her? Once an activist always an activist. Marilyn took it upon herself to form her own select committee and she and a bunch of other MPs and interested parties opened their doors for submissions on pay equity and the changes the Government made that they didn't like. When doors like that get opened, people of like minds tend to wander through, and they sit around all agreeing with each other about how bad things are. The ensuing report, which has just been released, tells you exactly what you would think it would. The problem with pay equity is it's an unsolvable problem, unless you take on a North Korea/Cuba type view of the world and simply get the Government to make all the rules. The simple truth of it is different jobs have different values. Another truth is some women choose work that doesn't pay as much as other work. Men do as well, but not as much. Some of the work that doesn't pay as much is predominantly done by women. The most famous case involved a woman called Kristine Bartlett and the aged care sector. Rightly or wrongly jobs of compassion and care tend to be done by females. I would argue that's largely because they tend to be nicer people overall but that would probably lead to a charge of me being sexist, which I'm not. What I am is a realist and you can see the issue. Should age care workers be paid more? Probably. But if they were, who would foot the bill? The people paying the age care bills of course. Could we artificially boost their pay? Well, that is where we got into dreadful trouble. They ended up comparing age care workers with mechanics and got a massive pay rise. Trouble is it was always false. Mechanics are not age care workers any more than air stewards are. You can look for commonalities, twist logic all you want, but you either artificially mess with it, or you let the market be the market. Most jobs have a rationale as to why they pay what they do and at all times, all jobs are open to all people, depending on desire and skill. So essentially Marilyn and her mates have wasted their time. Logic wins. The market wins. If you want more money, do a job that pays more of it, male or female. Some very painful school memories kick off this episode, with the sting of the cane, the strap and the long wooden ruler echoing in the stories from four very naughty boys. But wait, there's more where that came from as discussion turns to the big news of the week: the Bardot reunion. On a more serious note, sports of all persuasions get the once over, including footy, T20 World Cup, the Moto GP, EPL and the Polish darts. On a musical note, as we use that term dangerously in this case, the chart for discussion comes from 4GR Toowoomba, February 1970. Stand by for a shocking revelation that may irreparably damage the very shaky musical credibility of one of the Ruck 'n' Roll team. We use the term team very dangerously there as well. Ruck ON! So, the People's Select Committee of former MPs has reported back today and, completely unsurprisingly, has slammed the Government for scrapping the pay equity law last year. Which is fair enough in some ways, it was a shoddy process. The MPs say it offends the rule of law and they're probably right. It was done in a hurry to save last year's Budget, rushed through under urgency and changed the rules retrospectively. It's all really cynical stuff from a Government and too much of that sort of behaviour undermines confidence in the way the system works. But even though they make some fair points and mount some fair criticism of the way Nicola Willis and Brooke van Velden ran this thing out, I can't get past the next question I have, which is: so what? What do these former MPs think will happen as a result of this report? The pay equity scheme is not going to be brought back in the form it previously existed. It's far too expensive. The cost to the Government was estimated at $13 billion over four years. The cost to the entire economy would have been much, much higher. The former MPs want political parties to make it a bottom line to reintroduce the scheme after the election. No party can credibly commit to that. Where would they find $13 billion, other than by making the country's already worrying structural deficit even worse and adding to our already far-too-large debt? Chippy will make noises about bringing it back, but press him a little harder - ask him where he's going to find the money - and you don't get any sufficient answers. Ultimately, that's where the argument ends - where do you find the money? Yes, it was bad lawmaking. Yes, people were hurt by it. Yes, it's fair to criticise. But where do you get the money? "I wake up at 3 AM, check my phone to see what fresh hell has come out, and it's usually two words: 'Trump threatens.'" — Peter BaleWe're reversing the lens today. Rather than examining America from the inside, we're peering at it from the outside in—from New Zealand, at the bottom of the world. Peter Bale is a longtime media executive who's had senior positions at CNN, Reuters, and News Corp. He's now back in his native New Zealand, waking up at 3 AM to check his phone. The news, he says, is usually two words: "Trump threatens."Much of our conversation centers on the former NZ Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern. She led New Zealand's COVID response, Anthony Fauci style, with daily press conferences and a scientific mastery of the facts. An estimated 20,000 lives were saved. But she also became the target of profound misogyny and physical threats that no New Zealand Prime Minister had ever experienced. She now lives in Boston—teaching at Harvard's Shorenstein Center—because she can't safely live in her own country.Bale describes a dark MAGA-style underbelly in New Zealand that surprised him when he returned after 50 years abroad. Christian nationalists, anti-Maori sentiment, "Christchurch skinheads." US platforms—especially X—have given permission to speak in ways that would have been unacceptable. When the President uses that rhetoric, Bale notes, the permission for personal calumny is quadrupled. We also discuss the Epstein files (the media failed to connect the dots), Will Lewis's destruction of the Washington Post ("utterly reprehensible"), and whether America is finished. Bale's answer: "I don't think America is ever done. Every time people perceive it to be done, it has a political or economic renewal." The question is who comes after Trump—Vance or somebody even more threatening—and who will keep waking Peter Bale at 3 AM. Five Takeaways●      The View from 18,000 Miles Is Punch-Drunk: Bale wakes at 3 AM to check his phone. The news is usually two words: "Trump threatens." Small countries like New Zealand depend on the international rule of law. When that breaks down, they feel it acutely.●      Jacinda Ardern Became New Zealand's Fauci: She led the COVID response with daily press conferences and saved an estimated 20,000 lives. But she became the target of profound misogyny and physical threats. She now lives in Boston because she can't safely live in New Zealand.●      "They Are Us" Was the Right Three Words: After an Australian livestreamed himself killing 51 Muslims in Christchurch, Ardern flew there immediately, wore a head covering, and said of the victims: "They are us." It hung in the air as exactly what needed to be said.●      Trumpism Has Gone International: New Zealand has its own dark underbelly—Christian nationalists, anti-Maori sentiment, "Christchurch skinheads." US platforms have given permission to speak in ways that would have been unacceptable. When the President uses that rhetoric, the permission is quadrupled.●      America Is Never Done: Every time people perceive it to be finished, it has a political or economic renewal. Its ability to rebuild itself constantly is astounding. The question is who comes after Trump—Vance or somebody worse. About the GuestPeter Bale is a longtime media executive based in New Zealand. He has held senior positions at CNN, Reuters, News Corp, and the Center for Public Integrity. He ran WikiTribune and has been a close observer of both American and international media for decades.ReferencesPeople mentioned:●      Jacinda Ardern was Prime Minister of New Zealand during COVID. She now teaches at Harvard's Shorenstein Center because she can't safely live in her own country.●      Mark Carney has articulated what Bale calls the "Carney doctrine"—medium-sized countries standing up to US unilateralism.●      Will Lewis presided over cuts at the Washington Post that Bale calls "utterly reprehensible," including eliminating international bureaus and the books section.●      Michael Wolff has spent three years trying to interest mainstream media in Trump-Epstein connections. Trump's defense: "I'm not a schmuck enough to use email."About Keen On AmericaNobody asks more awkward questions than the Anglo-American writer and filmmaker Andrew Keen. In Keen On America, Andrew brings his pointed Transatlantic wit to making sense of the United States—hosting daily interviews about the history and future of this now venerable Republic. What's in the numbers? Well-known economist Shamubeel Eaqub has crunched a few figures. It turns out if you want to see it, being a student at university is a miserable experience. And boy does the media love a story of misery. Being a student is pricier than ever, they tell us. "Does it pay off?" was your headline. The answer, and this isn't from the story, it's from me, is yes. Yes, if you have a plan. Yes, if you are careful. Yes, if you are driven in a specific direction professionally. Our most recent graduate at our house is fully immersed in her first job and loving it. She owes a shed load of dough, but wouldn't for a minute have it any other way. But back to the numbers. All we really learn, when you compare the cost of stuff from Shamubeel 20 years ago versus the cost of stuff now, is the cost of stuff has gone up. That's got little to do with university and a lot to do with life because all our bills have gone up. Student support has gone up 86% but essentials have gone up 220%. In 2005 the allowance was $160 while essentials were $140 and you had $20 left over. These days you're in the red to the tune of eight bucks, which I wouldn't actually have thought was that bad. University fees have gone up 113%. You might want to ask why. But here is a reality check: the story tells us 35,000 students received some form of assistance. That number on the last quarter is up 5%. But the amount they get is down 3%. So more get money, but not as much. Surely that's good? But here is the real number: how many students are there? ChatGPT tells me almost 400,000, so less than 10% get any assistance at all. 90% don't need help. Isn't that the real story? Too many stories and too many headlines are about what's wrong, not what's right, who is doing badly, not who is doing fine. You can play with numbers forever. Palmerston North rents have gone up more than Auckland rents, so it's not as cheap to be at Massey as it once was, and so it goes. But the big picture, the real story, surely is what you got out of university. What did the qualification do for you? If it changed your life, set you on a path, set you up, got you a career and opened the doors then the bill is immaterial. Like life, university is how you see it. Like life, the choices are yours. Labour's promising to be realistic as it shapes up election year ideas. Leader Chris Hipkins has delivered his State of the Nation address in Auckland at a Business Chamber event. The speech lacked new policy - but addressed concern around people leaving the country and the state of our tax system. Newstalk ZB senior political correspondent Barry Soper voiced disapproval with the speech, and questioned whether Labour would be able to deliver on anything for Kiwi voters. Perspective with Heather du Plessis-Allan: You know what's ironic about Hipkins' State of the Nation speech?

Listening to Chris Hipkins' State of the Nation speech today, I found it really hard to take him seriously. The speech was mostly just a list of things wrong with the country right now, most of which anyone who can remember back five, six, seven years, knows were caused by him, Grant, Jacinda and Adrian Orr. Take this line, for example: “I see young New Zealanders - smart, hardworking, full of potential - making calculations that no young person should have to. Do I stay in the country I love, or do I leave to build the life I've worked for? It breaks my heart.” Well, it shouldn't break his heart - because he was warned about this. When he, Jacinda and Grant were contemplating those long Auckland lockdowns at the tail end of the pandemic, Treasury explicitly warned that young people would suffer the most. I quote: “The negative consequences are that low employment and income rates are shown to persist for young people well after recessions have waned.” - Treasury advice, 13 May, 2021. Now, we've already spent more than enough time debating whether the lockdowns should have happened - we don't need to do that again. But the consequences of those lockdowns are there in black and white. Young people would bear the brunt. So he can hardly complain now that young people are leaving the country. It was predicted. He complains about affordability. Well, it was during his Government that inflation spiked to 7.3 percent. Yes, some of it was global. But a lot of it was Grant Robertson allowing Adrian Orr to print billions of dollars. Again - right or wrong - we can debate that. But it was the actions of his Government that created the affordability crisis he now laments. He complains about unemployment. Unemployment is up because of the recession Adrian Orr engineered to bring down the inflation that, as I've just said, was created by him and Grant. Now, I'm not defending the National-led Government - that's not my job. Frankly, I think they could have done a lot more to tidy up the Government's books, that part has been woeful. But they did not create the mess that Chippy is complaining about. And it is beyond ironic to have him standing there saying, “Oh, look what a mess this is,” and proposing to be the man to fix it - when he was part of the team, in fact right up there in the top three of the team, that created the mess in the first place.
