Julie, how you doing?  Julie Hruska: I'm awesome. Thank you so much for having me today, Brett.  Brett Gilliland: Well, we are happy to have you. You're in beautiful Asheville, North Carolina. I love that place.  Julie Hruska: It is so pretty here. I actually grew up in the Midwest where you're at and, um, I didn't like the cold winters, so I came south. I didn't quite get far enough south to avoid winter, but it's, it's beautiful here.  Brett Gilliland: Yes it is. We went there, uh, I guess maybe two summers ago on a family vacation. My wife, who's also named Julie and, and, uh, our four boys and so little Biltmore mansion, if everybody's not been out there, it's such an awesome place, a great part of the country. Julie Hruska: Yeah, it, it's amazing. There's so much to do in the outdoors, and we do have the best of all worlds. And we're not too far from the beach too, which is like my favorite place.  Brett Gilliland: That's, that's right. Well, uh, Julie, if you can, um, we'll, we'll dive into what you do for a living and all that kind of stuff, but you are a high performance, uh, strategist, uh, certified high performance coach, speaker, trainer. I know you got a TV show coming out called The Next Level. You've got some group coaching called Next Level as well. Um, but before we dive into that kind of stuff, can you just maybe give us a little lay of the land on what's made you, the woman you are today?  Julie Hruska: Oh, wow. That's, that's such a complex question. Right. So I grew up in the Midwest, um, in a very traditional conservative Christian family. Um, I was very much raised to become a wife and mother, and so I lived out that path. I got married at 20. Um, started having kids in my early twenties. I have three beautiful kids, so they're the blessing of that part of my story. But, um, as I went through that life, I started to realize that I was losing my identity. I was very unhappy. I was very anxious. And, um, my oldest son is severely dyslexic and so he needed to go to a special. That was quite expensive. So I looked at going back to work and I'd been out of work, um, for a while, staying at home with my kids. So when I went back to get my master's degree, there was a program, um, out in Colorado Springs, Colorado for brain-based gender differences. Um, I was a educator at the time, so when I went out there for the first time in over a decade, People were calling my name, they were asking my opinion. I was no longer Ethan, Erin, and Sidney's mom. I actually had a name. Brett Gilliland: Yeah. Julie Hruska: Which seems foreign to a lot of people who haven't been through it, but for me, I really lost a sense of self. And so in that moment, it was like an asteroid literally hit me in the head and woke me up. And the wool came off my eyes and I realized all of the things that weren't working in my life and very much that I had adopted my parents' belief of what life should be and not my own. Brett Gilliland: Mm-hmm.  Julie Hruska: Um, so unfortunately, um, when you have that kind of awakening experience, some people celebrate that, but for me it was terrifying. Because I realized I was in my early thirties and I had followed someone else's path. And the unraveling of that, the really stripping things down and looking a...

March 15th 2020, we all remember that timeframe when the world shut down and many of us had to pivot. Some of us had our careers completely wiped out. For Julie Hruska, she would teach her last 'in person' class on this day, then shut down her studio 6 years prior to her existing plans. Julie then made her pivot, she declared what she wanted to do, which was expand in a time of contraction. Then it started, full send on getting active on LinkedIn, creating content, getting active on video, networking. Julie posted this on her LinkedIn page recently: "2 years ago, when the world locked down, I faced the dark unknown. As a single mother of 3 and an entrepreneur, I had to pivot quickly to keep the lights on and food on our table. It sounds dramatic, because it was. I knew that if I didn't quickly shift to a virtual model for my business, my coaching company wouldn't survive and my children would suffer. The pivot was fast, but I was committed. There was a steep learning curve. I had to learn LinkedIn, content creation, posting, connecting, and engaging I had to learn video recording, editing, and captioning. I had to open up to write again and learn to edit for social media. I had to be vulnerable and risk judgment. It was often terrifying, but I kept stepping beyond fear, toward freedom, moving forward one courageous step at a time." Julie and I had a wonderful discussion about her incredible backstory and pivot, then going into her pillars of creating success in the high performance realm using her 3 'c's of success. Julie applied the exact blueprint of what she teaches to other executives in her own life, she 'walks the walk' and shows others how to do the same. Jack Welsh, former CEO of General Electric and one of the most prolific leaders of the late 90's once said: “Face reality as it is, not as it was or as you wish it to be.” Jack Welsh also said: “Control Your Own Destiny or Someone Else Will” Make sure to check out this incredible episode if you are interested in Leadership, Executive Lifestyle and High Performance Habits. BUSINESS & THOUGHT LEADER EDITION    People tend to think leaders are born rather than made. However, leaders are no different from athletes. Even though some athletes have natural talents, it's their commitment to working on their craft every day that gets them to the top. Leaders may have innate talents - perhaps a higher EQ is one example - but everyone can develop the leadership skills necessary to perform at the highest level.   It can be difficult to pin down a simple definition of elite leadership, but we all know it when we see it.    What exactly defines an elite leader? How do they distinguish themselves from the rest of us?   Their mindset determines their success. There is a remarkable clarity about winning among elite leaders - for the company, for the team, and for themselves. Elite leaders have a constant drive to achieve their goals and reach the defined destination.   Their focus on winning revolves around having integrity between their words and their actions as well as their relationships with others. From moment to moment, it manifests itself in behaviors, choices, and decisions that benefit others rather than just themselves.   For Julie Hruska, elite leadership has six components that make them what they are: ENVISION, ENLIST, EMBODY, EMPOWER, EVALUATE, ENCOURAGE.  What separates elite leaders from bad leaders? Integrity, where their words and their actions align. People have become so jaded in the world and make promises that are empty and they don't keep. If you think about legendary leaders, they're people that set a vision and then they honor that, they follow it through, and they become role models for other people.   Join us as Julie discusses who elite leaders are, their characteristics, and six components that make up the E6 Leadership Framework. In this episode of the Postural Restoration Podcast,  I sat down with Dr. James Carlson who will be presenting at our 13th Annual Interdisciplinary Integration symposium on April 21-22nd. Dr. Carlson began studying gnathological principles while still a student at the University of Minnesota dental school nearly 60 years ago. While there, he had the opportunity to study under one of the top gnathologists at the time, Dr. Charles Stewart, and learn his techniques using the Stewart Articulator. From then on, he knew he wanted to pursue a dental career studying these principles. Following his dental schooling, Dr. Carlson spent 3 years in the Navy, eventually settling into his first private practice in Alaska. In his early years of  clinical practice, he began studying and applying the concepts of Centric Relation (CR) of the temporomandibular joints, and Centric Occlusion (CO) of the bite. Around this time, he was also introduced to the concept of "Dental Kinesiology", published by George Eversaul. These studies and others, allowed Dr. Carlson to see the influence that the neuromuscular system has on jaw position. Throughout these early years his "patients became his professors" and he has continued to learn from them and numerous other integrative minds throughout his career.Dr. Carlson began introducing these concepts within his appliance fabrication  and began to see an even greater influence of the neuromuscular system on dentition. His appliances at the time were meant to calibrate the maxilla to the mandible through the use of vertical height, anterior/posterior guidance and other qualities. This led him to the work of Dr. Barney Jankelson, who is widely known as the founder of Physiological Dentistry. From this point, his career was focused on Form vs. Function within the Stomatognathic system. This thinking led him to collaborate with not only numerous other dentists, but also included a 20 year partnership with an integrative chiropractor who also introduced him to the influence of Podiatry and the foots influence on posture. Through these collaborations, he was introduced to the Acculiner System which he spent many years selling and training others on its use. During this period he learned the importance of a level bite plane, and has promoted the concept ever since.Throughout his career, Dr. Carlson has authored numerous papers and publications. Starting off with "Beyond Dental Care", which he summarizes as "everything I wasn't taught in Dental School". We then discuss his original publication which was titled "Physiologic Occlusion" but was retitled "Orthocranial Occlusion & Dentition Design" following the release of a new edition. And "Analyzing the Stomatognathic System", in which the concepts of "Form vs. Function" of the entire system is addressed more globally. These publications played a large role in Ron's own study of the stomatognathic system and Dr. Carlson's experience and passion for these concepts were a primary factor in the decision to host this years symposium,  "The Stomatognathic System - An Interdisciplinary Approach in the Management of Spatial Navigation and Structural Strength". We end our discussion joined by Ron to discuss how they plan to navigate these concepts through their presentations next month. We are very excited for the opportunity to introduce our PRI community to Dr. Carlson and these topics as Ron Hruska, Dr. James Carlson and Jason Masek collaborate throughout this years symposium.

Being a force of nature. Not a feverish, selfish, little cloud of ailments and grievances complaining that the world will not devote itself to making you happy. I am of the opinion that my life belongs to the whole community and as I live it, is my privilege to do for it whatever I can. I want to be thoroughly used up when I die. For the harder I work, the more I love. I rejoice in life for its own sake. Life is no brief candle to me it is a sort of splendid torch which I've got a hold of for the moment and I want to make it burn as bright as possible before handing it over to future generations. — George Bernard Shaw Thanks for listening and enjoy the show.

Nick talks with Dan Hruska, host of HP Outdoors Podcast. Dan is gitty for all things waterfowl. From big old Canada Honkers to ducks of every kind. He and his friend Josh scour the country for the next opportunity all along with running a weekly waterfowl podcast.Show Notes:Dan hails from Pennsylvania where he pursues birds who are migrating along the eastern flyway. Nick gets some basics on the whys and hows of waterfowling. Couple big take-aways was paying attention to the wind, birds need the wind inorder to land or take off so setting your ambush with the wind at your back is key. Second, championship callers may make a whole library of calls, but when in the field, mimicking what the birds are doing is what callers are going for, and when push comes to shove, motion in your decoys is more effective than calling. Now to the cutting board. Ducks are divided into divers and puddle. Divers having more of a streamline appearance (fighter jet) can have a fishy taste, especially in their fat. Trimming the colored fat helps mild flavor. Puddle ducks are more balanced in their body shape and can take off almost vertically (Helicopter). Have a milder flavor and their fat can have a very rich flavor. Saving rendered duck fat can be beneficial for enhancing dishes. Not to mention much saving the cash in not buying the store bought stuff.Pro Tip: When getting a perfectly seared duck breast, start with a cold pan. As heat builds the fat renders allowing you to flip the breast and sear in its own fat. Medium-rare seems to be the target doneness for best flavor. Well done can be livery in taste. The Huntavore is Powered by Simplecast
