Episode 2235: Peter Osnos on LBJ & McNamara - the Vietnam Partnership Bound to Fail

Keen On Democracy

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 28, 2024 48:05

There are few men politically or intellectually smarter than President Lyndon Johnson and his defense secretary Robert McNamara. So how did LBJ and McNamara screw up America's involvement in Vietnam so tragically? According to Peter Osnos, the author of LBJ and McNamara: The Vietnam Partnership Destined to Fail, it might have been because the two men were, in their own quite different ways, too smart. For Osnos - a legendary figure in American publishing who, amongst many other things, edited Donald Trump's Art of the Deal - the catastrophe of America's war in Vietnam is a parable about imperial hubris and overreach. According to Osnos, who has access to much previously unpublished material from McNamara, The Best and the Brightest orchestrated the worst and dumbest episode in American foreign policy. Peter Osnos began his journalism career in 1965 as an assistant to I. F. .Stone on his weekly newsletter. Between 1966–1984 Osnos was a reporter and foreign correspondent for The Washington Post and served as the newspaper's foreign and national editor. From 1984-1996 he was Vice President, Associate Publisher, and Senior Editor at Random House and Publisher of Random House's Times Books division. In 1997, he founded PublicAffairs. He served as Publisher and CEO until 2005, and was a consulting editor until 2020 when he and his wife, Susan Sherer Osnos, launched Platform Books LLC. Among the authors he has published and/or edited are — former President Jimmy Carter, Rosalyn Carter, Gen. Wesley Clark, Clark Clifford, former President Bill Clinton, Paul Farmer, Earvin (Magic) Johnson, Kareem Abdul Jabbar, Sam Donaldson, Kenneth Feinberg, Annette Gordon Reed, Meg Greenfield, Dorothy Height, Don Hewitt, Molly Ivins, Vernon Jordan, Ward Just, Stanley Karnow, Wendy Kopp, Charles Krauthammer, Brian Lamb, Jim Lehrer, Scott McClellan, Robert McNamara, Charles Morris, Peggy Noonan, William Novak, Roger Mudd. Former President Barack Obama, Speaker of the House Thomas P. (Tip) O'Neill, Nancy Reagan, Andy Rooney, Morley Safer, Natan Sharansky, George Soros, Susan Swain, President Donald Trump, Paul Volcker, Russian President Boris Yeltsin, and Nobel peace prize Winner Muhammad Yunus, as well as journalists from America's leading publications and prominent scholars. Osnos has also been a commentator and host for National Public Radio and a contributor to publications including Foreign Affairs, The Atlantic, and The New Republic. He wrote the Platform column for the Century Foundation, the Daily Beast and The Atlantic.com from 2006-2014. He has also served as Chair of the Trade Division of the Association of American Publishers and on the board of Human Rights Watch. From 2005-2009, he was executive director of The Caravan Project, funded by the MacArthur and Carnegie Foundations, which developed a plan for multi-platform publishing of books. He was the Vice-Chairman of the Columbia Journalism Review from  2007-2012. He is a member of The Council on Foreign Relations. He is a graduate of Brandeis and Columbia Universities. He lives in New York City, with his wife Susan, a consultant to human rights and philanthropic organizations. His children are Evan L.R. Osnos and Katherine Sanford. There are five grandchildren.Named as one of the "100 most connected men" by GQ magazine, Andrew Keen is amongst the world's best known broadcasters and commentators. SERIES 2 EPISODE 188: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN A-Block (1:44) SPECIAL COMMENT: The words weren't out of my mouth before they came out of President Biden's mouth. “A former president that is a convicted felon is now seeking the office of the presidency,” he said at a fundraiser 10 minutes from my HIGH SCHOOL. He added that after the 2020 election, “Something snapped in this guy for real, it's literally driving him crazy.” 1) Call Crazy Donald Trump a convicted felon – mission accomplished. 2) Call Convicted Felon Donald Trump literally crazy – now do it on camera. Because now there's MORE evidence it works and it cannot be said too often and it cannot be said by too many different leaders and it needs to be said by the President of the United States loudly and confidently and repeatedly: he's Convicted Felon Donald Trump and he is literally insane. I am not betting the democracy on one poll, it's conducted by a Canadian firm called Leger, but it IS an indicator: one out of three Republicans wishes they had nominated somebody else. Among Republicans under age 35 its nearly HALF. Say it. Keep saying it. ON CAMERA, Mr. President. MEANWHILE: The Wisconsin Fake Electors Scheme draws felony indictments and the whole thing sideswipes Senator Ron Johnson. And if like me you constantly wonder WHY these people sell out the nation and reality and themselves for Trump, the Pulitzer-Prize winning journalistic non-profit Pro Publica may have an answer based on promotions, new jobs, and other emoluments eight pro-Trump witnesses have received: Cash. B-Block (27:00) THE WORST PERSONS IN THE WORLD: The Republicans literally could not tell the difference between Milwaukee and Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam. ESPN's Ticking Time Bomb Pat McAfee somehow makes his use of the "b-word" about a Women's Basketball star even more of a disaster. And why on earth would a baseball player get banned for life for gambling on baseball oh right half the ads on baseball broadcasts tell you to gamble on baseball C-Block (38:00) THINGS I PROMISED NOT TO TELL: I brought him up in the A-Block..Why not tell you ALL my Frank Luntz stories? EASTMAN REIGNITES GRASSLEY/J6 ELECTORAL COLLEGE COUP STORY - 9.8.23

SEASON 2 EPISODE 30: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN A-Block (1:44) SPECIAL COMMENT: It's BACK. Asked at his disbarment hearing in California about his December 2020 email to Boris Epshteyn referring to Mike Pence OR CHUCK GRASSLEY presiding over the January 6 Electoral College Vote count and certification, John Eastman said he couldn't answer because of attorney-client privilege. Asked WHICH client, he answered "President Trump." And so it reignites. It is the Dracula of January 6 Coup Conspiracy threads. Each time it seems like it's been discredited, something like this arises. Now it's Eastman reigniting the belief that his email, and Grassley's bizarre statements on January 5 that they didn't expect Pence to preside, and Pence's refusal to get into the Secret Service vehicle during the coup, are all connected. And Grassley once again has changed his story. I'll review the whole saga and I'll predict: if somebody breaks John Eastman, they'll get the truth. So let's break him! Might be Fani Willis. She has now replied to Jim Jordan's fishing expedition with everything this side of an indictment of Jordan. The highlights are wonderful. Then there's Peter Navarro's conviction and the reappearance of Sign Woman to torture the pint-sized fascist. Roger Stone reveals he has no idea what would happen during a nuclear war. A self-identifying Air Force vet confronts Ron DeSantis about the Dollar Store slaughter and Ron and his aide and his dubious Surgeon General overreact so much it's clear they know the mass shooting was DeSantis's fault. And we have to strip Elon Musk of his security clearance and all government contracts; a Russian propagandist goaded him into shutting off the satellite phone system he gave the Ukrainians when Ukraine needed it the most. Musk feared it would precipitate a "Mini-Pearl Harbor." Or, did he say "Minnie Pearl Harbor?" And that new CNN poll that's so dire for President Biden? Small detail. They polled 900 Republicans and only 600 non-Republicans. B-Block (25:40) THE WORST PERSONS IN THE WORLD: Mike Buckner, explorer, who says tomorrow he will prove the earth is flat and what we think is the horizon of a globe is actually "The Great Ice Wall." CNN Politics thinks I'm-All-Ears Tuberville doing China's bidding by hamstringing the US military is a "Dispute between Tuberville and Democrats." And disgraced Conservative Steven Crowder takes out an ad offering a laugh and based on the allegations he repeatedly exposed himself to men, I think we know what the laugh is. C-Block (31:00) THINGS I PROMISED NOT TO TELL: Ever heard one of those stories of the guy who happens to run into the automobile manufacturer early in the 20th Century? And the businessman is just merging together a bunch of small firms and he needs a name for the new big one and the stranger says "How about General Motors?" The story is true - and it's about my great grandfather.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Journalist Harvey Wasserman exposes a danger in Ukraine no one in the mainstream media is talking about. A touching moment during the telling of Lilian Carter's story. With 50 years of experience writing and researching nuclear power, author/expert/activist Harvey Wasserman warns that even a “conventional” war in Ukraine could lead to Apocalyptic radiation releases, killing millions and costing trillions. Wasserman warns that even minor disruptions, sabotage, or explosions could lead to Chernobyl-sized disasters at any one of the 15 reactors now operating in Ukraine. Radiation releases from Chernobyl itself, he says, killed more than a million humans worldwide, irradiated thousands of square miles of land and water, and cost trillions in destroyed property. A touching moment occurred on Morning Joe when Sam Donaldson honored Lilian Carter, President Carter's mother, and then something special happened. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/politicsdoneright/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/politicsdoneright/support

February 6, 2022 marked the 111th anniversary of the birth of Ronald Wilson Reagan. He used to love to joke that each birthday was the anniversary of his 39th birthday, so 2022 would have marked the 72nd anniversary of his 39th birthday! Since President Reagan's passing on June 5, 2004, the Reagan Foundation has worked with United States Marine Corps Camp Pendleton to hold a birthday celebration on February 6th of each year to honor the life and legacy of our nation's 40th president. Each year the program includes live musical entertainment from the 1st Marine Division Band, an honor guard, a rifle guard, and the official laying of the White House Presidential Wreath on President Reagan's gravesite. Keynote speakers in prior years have included Rudy Giuliani, Elizabeth Dole, James Baker, and Sam Donaldson. In this week's A Reagan Forum podcast, we listen in to the ceremony held on February 6, 2022 with keynote speaker Peggy Noonan.

On this edition of Parallax Views, Brian Karem, renowned journalist. National Press Club Freedom of the Press Award recipient, host of the "Just Ask the Question" podcast, and White House correspondent for Playboy (who made waves for questioning the Trump administration quite pointedly at White House pressers), joins Parallax Views to discuss his new book Free the Press: The Death of American Journalism and How to Revive It and his career as a journalist from questioning George H.W. Bush about the failure of the War on Drugs to working on America's Most Wanted. We begin the conversation with Brian explaining how he got into reporting and being mentored legendary White House Correspondents as Sam Donaldson of ABC News and Helen Thomas (whose advice to Brian to "Just Ask the Question" has stuck with Brian over the years. From there we delve into the problems facing journalism today and its decline. Part of this decline, Brian argues is a lack of "diversity of ownership" in media. In other words, the corporate monopoly on news media today. Brian explains how government, especially since the Presidency of Ronald Reagan, has contributed to the decline of the press in the United States. This leads us to exploring a number of different issues related to the problems of the press today and their historical origins including the demise of the Fairness Doctrine, the impact of Fox News and its late Chairman and CEO Roger Ailes, lack of experience amongst many young journalists just out of university, the tethering of news media outlets to capitalism and profit demands, "Combat TV" and infotainment, Ronald Reagan and his allies' planting of fake journalists in the press in the 1980s, the fall of community news outlets with a local focus, access journalism, the early 20th century journalistic gadfly H.L. Mencken's adage about how members of the press are easy to fool and the reason why journalists get dupped at times, and more. Additionally, Brian and I talk about some of his experiences as a journalist such as his infamous confrontations with the Trump administration (ie: being called "that Playboy reporter" by Kayla McEnany; Brian's infamous run-in with Sebastian Gorka in which Gorka refered to Brian as a "punk" and "not a journalist), grilling George H.W. Bush over the failure of the War on Drugs (and a primer on the ways in which the Drug War has contributed to many social problems today, especially south of the U.S. border), his personal memories of Watergate burglar G. Gordon Liddy, working with grieving families and taking an ethical approach to speaking with them during his time with America's Most Wanted, and various other recollections form his storied career. The conversation even manages to get in some reference and/or remember such figures and events of years past to the noted antiwar "Maverick Marine" Gen. Smedley Butler and his seminal short book War is a Racket, the Iraq War and Judith Miller, the problems with the way some elements of the press covered the Steele Dossier (aka the "Trump pee-tape" story), the Capitol breach of January 6th, 2021 (Brian was in Washington, D.C. as it happened), covering an Federal Aviation Agency (FAA) scandal, the concept of the "Fourth Estate" and the need for it, and much, much more!

Never able to return to work, President and Mrs. Reagan honored his contribution by renaming the Press Briefing Room as the Brady Press Briefing Room, 40 years ago on November 9th, 1981. PODCAST SUMMARY HOUR 1: Rush returns to audio sound bite roster all about him. Democrat authoritarians want to cancel Thanksgiving and Christmas. Sidney Powell, Lin Wood, Rudy Giuliani put reputations on the line to claim provable voter fraud that will overturn the election. Obama on Rush's "business model" based on hating minorities and immigrants. Sixteen pro-life Republican women elected to House. Jurassic Park Drive-Bys Tom Brokaw and Sam Donaldson slam Rush. Every GOP candidate who flipped a House seat was a woman, minority or veteran. Anderson Cooper says Trump wants to become a "Rush Limbaugh-type figure", a kingmaker, in the GOP. The New Yorker fires Jeffrey Toobin. New Yorker's Jane Mayer says Trump can't work hard enough to be a talk show host. The left is scared to death Trump will wind up on the radio. Democrat governors ask for people to report Thanksgiving violations. Christiane Amanpour apologizes for comparing Trump to Hitler -- we don't accept it, because she meant it. It all comes back to this: Why did they stop counting votes on election night? PODCAST SUMMARY HOUR 2: If we're going to bastardize the American electoral process, let's go all the way and give Biden 100% of the votes, maybe 99%. Where we are on voter fraud investigation: Sidney Powell and Lin Wood promise there is provable voter fraud. Don't assume new websites you never heard of are a bunch of kooks. Rush's emergence on the radio blew away the Walter Cronkites and Eric Sevareids. The Democrats won't leave Trump alone after the presidency because they don't want anyone else to try what he tried. Cruz and Hawley take it to Zuckerberg and Dorsey. Sidney Powell and Lin Wood have impeccable reputations, if they were liberals they'd be among the most celebrated attorneys in the country. Why would they lie about the evidence they've seen? Dems started eroding confidence in the electoral system with the Russia hoax in 2016. Andrew Yang moves to Georgia to vote in Senate race? PODCAST SUMMARY HOUR 3: In Sidney Powell's compelling appearance on Maria Bartiromo show she insisted she's seen overwhelming evidence of fraud. Lin Wood, who represented wrongly accused Richard Jewell, was right when everyone said he was wrong. In order to believe Biden won, we have to believe people voted down ballot for GOP in overwhelming fashion, but didn't vote for Trump. Biden underperformed with black voters, but got 10 million votes more than Obama? 19 bellwether counties were wrong this time. Venezuelan Dominion voter machines used in many states were made to steal elections for Chavez. Many Democrat counties had over 90% voter turnout. Rudy explains how they're going to get these cases to the Supreme Court. The only Democrat in the country who got any votes is Joe Biden. Something went on here? Sidney Powell on overwhelming evidence. Washington Governor Inslee cancels Thanksgiving. Madison, Wisconsin bans all indoor gatherings. Caller on why Drive-Bys are focusing on Rush, not Trump. RANT OF THE DAY: “Nattering nabobs of negativism” One question has been asked repeatedly since Gov. Brian Kemp said it was OK for certain businesses to reopen starting last Friday, with restaurants following on Monday. Was it too soon? The decision came under repeated fire from Donald Trump, even though his administration had been briefed about it earlier and apparently raised no red flags. It even came up during Monday’ Zoom-powered Rome City Commission meeting. It came up during the question-and-answer session following Kemp’s briefing on where the state was as his shelter-in-place order ticks toward ending this Thursday night. Among the first to raise her hand was NBC reporter Blayne Alexander, who did go a little Sam Donaldson in asking for more detail on the decision to reopen Georgia’s economy. She carefully recounted the initial reaction to Kemp’s decision. Bad move, it seems. Kemp – who has been brutalized by national media for his decision, especially in magazine pieces ranking him as America’s dumbest governor – borrowed a play from the Trump media relations guide. He stopped her midquestion, asking her whether she was making a statement or asking a question. She politely answered “a question” and continued to do her job. Kemp went Trump again by saying he understood that it may be hard for NBC News to understand facts and figures. On Thursday's Mark Levin Show, Rich Zeoli from WPHT fills in. The green new deal is a progressive prescription for utopianism. This weird marriage of climate change and social justice is a blue print that will cost us everything we have. The left loves this concept of economic justice, but it doesn't mean opportunity to earn, it means that the government will guarantee that all people earn the same amount of income. Then, media icon, Sam Donaldson, admitted that the U.S is already a socialist country and that socialism will make us a better country. At least he's not hiding it. The elitism of leftists in the media is exactly what will re-elect President Trump. Later, #MeToo seems to only apply if you're not a Democrat since the media is giving a pass to the accused Lt Governor of Virginia Justin Fairfax. Later, Democrats once had pro-life politicians in their party. But they've gone so far to the left that the debate isn't over to abort or not, it’s over whether it’s when the baby is in the womb in the ninth month or after the child is born. He is host, writer, and executive producer of the Emmy nominated "Idiotest," the hit comedy brain teaser game show in it's 4th season on GSN, with 210 episodes. It's the most watched original program on the network. His hilarious hour-long standup special "Ben Gleib - Neurotic Gangster" is currently airing on Showtime.  For 7 years he was a round table regular on "Chelsea Lately" on E! with over 100 appearances! He also played himself on a memorable episode of the E! scripted series "After Lately."  He has toured sold-out arenas all over North America with both Chelsea Handler and Dane Cook, has been headlining comedy clubs around the globe since 2007, and has performed on "The Late Late Show," "Last Comic Standing," and twice on "Last Call with Carson Daly." The phrase “living legend” gets tossed around a lot but there is no better way to describe Ernie Baur, long-time D.C. news and sports director and producer. In this fun and story-filled interview, Andy O. and the 14-time Emmy winning reminisce about the go-go years of local television programming and the diverse personalities that made it so special. Ernie Baur - Emmy Award Winning Producer/Director Born and raised in a Bethesda that has long-since faded from memory among the concrete and steel buildings of today, Ernie attended our Lady of Lourdes until 8th grade. In 9th, grade Ernie attended Good Counsel (hitchhiking to and from the all-boys Catholic school), and ultimately graduated from the co-ed high school right behind his house, Bethesda Chevy Chase. Deciding that more school was not for him (“I went to Montgomery College for about an hour and a half”), Ernie Baur was grilling steaks at the local Bonanza when his first break in broadcasting came as a part time copy boy at Channel 9. His prowess on the football field playing with the station crew team in the local flag football beer league game earned him an invitation for a paid internship. This would be just the beginning of the important role football would play in his life and career. Among the news anchors that Ernie ran copy to in those early years at Channel 9 was Sam Donaldson, who would go on to fame as a dogged reporter covering the White House for ABC. “Donaldson, he was a heart attack waiting to happen. He did everything to the last minute . . . what a character. You know he auditioned once… at channel 7 and we didn't hire him. The opinion of the group was this guy's a jerk and yeah, I'm not gonna argue. He was high maintenance but a great broadcaster. He’d always come up to you and say ‘I'm surrounded by incompetents everyday’.” But it wasn’t just on the news broadcasts where Ernie learned his craft. As stage manager of the Saturday morning Ranger Hal show “I used to run the puppets, Hal did the voices. You get behind the screen and you put your hand up you’re Marvin Monkey, Dr. Fox, Oswald Rabbit.” And, of course, Ernie has a story or two about trying to do the show after a few late nights at The Dancing Crab. While brief, Ernie Baur got his first directing break at Channel 7, working with another DC broadcasting legend Ed Walker on AM Washington, pairing Walker with Ruth Hudgens. But Channel 9 wanted him back and they sent a very special envoy to recruit him. “Fortunately for me…the person that they hired to replace me was awful, so awful to the point that they came back to me and they had Gordon Peterson take me out and say we need to get him back. Jim Snyder was a news director Ben Schneider and John Baker was a producer they're the ones that said ‘Look we gotta get Ernie back okay and whatever it takes and so Gordon got me back.” And it was at Channel 9 the Ernie met Lucille, his wife of 43 years. Of course, one of Ernie Baur’s great contributions to DC broadcasting lore is his work with NFL football and creating “Redskins Sidelines.” But that is not the only “sidelines” Ernie worked – for 15 seasons (and including 6 Super Bowls) Ernie worked as the “glove man” – the sideline guy who wears big orange gloves and indicates timeouts on the field. “Yeah I did it for “The Catch” the famous play in 49er history by Dwight Clark (in the 1982 NFC Championship Game against the Cowboys). I was there for that.” Glenn Brenner, the quick-witted and beloved sportscaster started out as the “third-string” sports anchor on Channel 9 but within a year was the “guy.” And, the rest is history. As the “Warner Wolf Show” morphed into “Redskins Sidelines” once Wolf had left the station. Once Sonny Jurgensen joined “Sidelines”, the format was set and its popularity grew among Redskins fans. Many of the behind-the-scenes stories of “Redskins Sidelines” have passed into Washington broadcasting lore. Sobriety of the hosts and the guests could some...
