Merry Clambake! The entire TCBCast gang is joined by Rabia and Felix from Suddenly: A Frank Sinatra Podcast, Jamie and John from EAP Society, Kristen, Benita and Margarita from Those Elvis Girls, David "Ghosty" Wills from We Say Yeah: A Cliff Richard Podcast, Garrett Cash from "The Beat! With Garrett Cash", and Darin Evans, all in a manner never quite heard before - a non-linear episode intercut across four different discussions! The TCBCast Gang tackles the movie head on, giving Gurdip, Ryan and Bec (who missed most of the last two Christmases) the chance to voice all their questions about what makes this low-rated Elvis movie so eminently watchable... and also confusing. Meanwhile, Olivia brings her own deep dives. Oh, and most of them are drinking. The Suddenly Crew took an experimental approach this year, watching the film "Bake to Front," starting their viewing at the halfway point of the film and working their way back around to the infamous "Clambake" musical sequence as an unintended finale. Those Elvis Girls discuss what makes Elvis' films fun to watch, what it's like to view his film career while being relatively new to the fandom, and call for #JusticeForClambake! And a gathering of film buffs get together to explore the year 1967 in film: what the big hits and notable releases were, and how Elvis' film career slots into the overall picture between the fading old Hollywood studio system and the more experimental and independent New Hollywood. Most fun of all, there's an exploration of some of the movies that Elvis Presley himself is known to have watched in 1967. There's a few surprises in store throughout as well! As of this episode's release date, "Clambake" can be watched freely (with ads) on TubiTV and Pluto TV in the United States and may be available on a streaming platform in your region as well. The "Clambake" soundtrack is on all major music platforms. Oh yes it's ladies' night on the second episode of Pop Goes The Actor...but IS the feeling right? Sometimes! We wend our way through copyright-compliant bugle boys of Company Wonder Woman, the adorkable Zooey Deschanel, Shelley Fabares's evident terror, Marla Gibbs's appealing blood-thinner ad, and a track from Cybill Shepherd that puts the "no" back in "bossa nova." Throw that sax in a dumpster and join us for legitimate fun vs. snarky fun, the sexual politics of Camelot-era pop, and the timeline where Rosemary Clooney is good. When A Hard Days Night exploded onto the scene in 1964, its charm and success was simply ripe for some good ol' fashioned bootlegging. What followed was half a decade of wannabe music movies – specifically, movies in which pop bands play themselves while still following a strictly scripted plot. Mainly these were vehicles for British boy bands, but eventually they started to extend over to the Americas – where they warped from wholesome to hippie. In this season finale, Bart and Jenna tackle several of these band movies head on – and with Head on. It's an episode full of high highs (marijuana and LSD) and low lows (Herman's Hermits and Freddie and the Dreamers), but quite frankly they're all a treat as its such a decade-specific genre. Get ready for a whole lot of restless youths, square plots, stoner humor, and screaming, adoring fans. The following films are discussed:• Ferry Cross the Mersey (1964) Directed by Jeremy Summers Starring Gerry & The Pacemakers, Mona Washbourne, Cilla Black• Having a Wild Weekend (1965) Catch Us If You Can Directed by John Boorman Starring The Dave Clark Five, Barbara Ferris, Yootha Joyce• Help! (1965) Directed by Richard Lester Starring The Beatles, Leo McKern, Eleanor Bron• Hold On! (1966) Directed by Arthur Lubin Starring Herman's Hermits, Shelley Fabares, Sue Ane Langdon• The Cuckoo Patrol (1967) Directed by Duncan Wood Starring Freddie & The Dreamers, Kenneth Connor, Victor Maddern• Good Times (1967) Directed by William Friedkin Starring Sonny & Cher, George Sanders, Norman Alden• Mrs. Brown, You've Got a Lovely Daughter (1968) Directed by Saul Swimmer Starring Herman's Hermits, Sheila White, Sarah Caldwell• Head (1968) Directed by Bob Rafelson Starring The Monkees, Victor Mature, Annette FunicelloAlso mentioned:• The Ghost Goes Gear (1966) Directed by Hugh Gladwish Starring The Spencer Davis Group, Nicholas Parsons, Sheila White• Los chicos con las chicas (1967) Directed by Javier Aguirre Starring Los Bravos, Enriqueta Carballeira, Manolo Gómez Bur• Dame un poco de amooor...! On Episode 144 of the RETROZEST podcast, Curtis continues and concludes a celebration the 45th Anniversary of the premiere of BATTLESTAR GALACTICA! This show is an American science fiction media franchise created by Glen A. Larson. It began with the original television series in 1978, and was followed by a short-run sequel series (Galactica 1980), a line of book adaptations, original novels, comic books, a board game, video games and a reboot series. Assisting Curtis in this endeavor with an exclusive interview is the composer and conductor of the score for BSG, STU PHILLIPS! Stu and Curtis had a great discussion about the music score for BSG, and the many other aspects of his long career. With Colpix Records, Stu produced high-charting hits for James Darren, Nina Simone, The Skyliners, Shelley Fabares, and The Monkees. He also furnished music for Columbia's television series, including The Donna Reed Show (with Fabares) and The Monkees. In the mid-1960s, he worked for Capitol Records and created, produced and arranged for the easy listening studio orchestra the Hollyridge Strings. In the late 1960s and early 1970s, Phillips continued scoring films and television series including music for the films Beyond the Valley of the Dolls (1970), The Seven Minutes (1971) and the television series Get Christie Love!. In 1974, he began working at Universal Studios scoring television series; Glen A. Larson made extensive use of his compositions. During this time, he scored music for the television series Switch, McCloud, The Hardy Boys/Nancy Drew Mysteries, Quincy M.E. and (of course) Battlestar Galactica. He also composed music for the television series The Amazing Spider-Man. After moving to 20th Century Fox Television, Stu composed music for The Fall Guy and Knight Rider. Be sure and pick up a copy of Stu's autobiography, Stu Who? Forty Years of Navigating the Minefields of the Music Business from his website (autographed) or from Amazon. Viva Pod Vegas is back, and we've made it to 1965 to talk about Elvis Presley and Shelley Fabares in Girl Happy! Before we dive into the movie, we talk about the teaser trailer for Sofia Coppola's Priscilla, we share some exciting news about Elvis movies on the Criterion Channel, and we read a few more very kind notes from listeners. Then, we pack up and head for Fort Lauderdale to talk about Shelley Fabares filling the Ann-Margret void, the world's oldest college kids, and why the "Do the Clam" dance never caught on. We talk about Girl Happy as a response to Beatlemania, its comparison between the women of Florida and the women of Chicago, and Elvis pulling a Magic Mike and setting off an entire chain of events he has to reckon with. We talk about the greatest Elvis song name in history ("Fort Lauderdale Chamber of Commerce"), Girl Happy becoming a "women in prison" movie, and how to simplify the movie and solve its story issues. We admire Elvis's incredible guessing game, laugh about him pulling a Superman IV, and find ourselves thinking about the Kittyhawks again. We re-adjust how we do the "best song in an Elvis movie" game. We get very, very excited for Tickle Me after we read its plot description.
In this episode of Dyer's Daily, Jamie Dyer dips into the Record Revival Archive, a review of a Bear Family vinyl reissue of Shelley Fabares' debut album Shelley! Part of the 11000 series. Recorded in 2021.

With the imminent release of Baz Luhrmann's big screen biopic, It Happened One Year checked the 1967 release schedule and found not one, not two, but three big movies starring the King of Rock 'n' Roll, and figured it was high time to give them a watch. They aren't Elvis's best films, they aren't his best known films, but they are all, in their own odd ways, fascinating hunk-a hunks of entertainment - Double Trouble, Easy Come Easy Go, and Clambake! With such luminary co-stars as Elsa Lanchester, Bill Bixby, Michael Murphy, Pat Harrington, Pat Priest, Will Hutchins, and Shelley Fabares, these films are long on talent, very long on musical numbers, and murky on plot! Listen as Sarah & Joe recount their Elvis connections, detail the highlights of visiting Graceland in Memphis, rate the films on a scale of one-to-five hip gyrations, and spotlight the most ludicrous tacked-on song in each production.

Hollywood legends Shelley Fabares and Mike Farrell returned to the podcast to chat about Elvis Presley, M*A*S*H, Coach, Brian's Song, Betty White and so much more.
Shelley Fabares began her career tap dancing and modeling from the age three years old. She appeared on such TV shows as Captain Midnight (1954) and Annie Oakley (1954) and at the age 12, she made her professional film debut in the Rock Hudson/Cornell Borchers tearjerker Never Say Goodbye (1956) as Hudson's daughter, and went on to play kid sister roles in the rock 'n' roll-themed Rock, Pretty Baby! (1956) and its sequel Summer Love (1957) both starring John Saxon. Early TV appearances included the Producers' Showcase adaptation of Our Town starring Frank Sinatra and Paul Newman. She was Young Cathy in a Matinee Theatre adaptation of Wuthering Heights. Teen-idol status came with her coming-of-age role as the ever-wholesome daughter "Mary Stone" on The Donna Reed Show (1958). She had a #1 Billboard hit with the song "Johnny Angel." After which, she co-starred with Elvis Presley in the movies Girl Happy (1965), Spinout (1966) and Clambake (1967). Shelley is Golden Globe nominated for her role as the altruistic wife of a dying footballer "Brian Piccolo" in Brian's Song (1971), where she starred opposite James Caan and Billy Dee Williams. She co-starred in the series The Brian Keith Show (1972), The Practice (1976), Highcliffe Manor (1979), the late-night soap spoof Forever Fernwood (1977) and marvelously played the villian opposite Bonnie Franklin in the hit sitcom One Day at a Time (1975). On television, she will forever be associated with her character Christine Armstrong, Craig T. Nelson's resourceful mate on hit series Coach (1989), where she earned two Emmy nominations. Shelley is married to actor Mike Farrell of M*A*S*H (1972). Together, they supplied the voices for Ma and Pa Kent on the Superman: The Animated Series (1996). Shelley and Mike joined us on the podcast to talk about their love story, working with Elvis Presley and Donna Reed, starring on the hit show Coach, her hit song Johnny Angel and so much more.
Mike Farrell began his acting career with small parts in films like "The Graduate" and "The Americanization of Emily". Eventually, he landed on the soap "Days of Our Lives", where he starred as Scott Banning for two years. "Days" was followed by leading roles in two series, "The Interns" and "The Man and The City," then a four-year contract with Universal Pictures. Mike is best known for playing Captain B.J. Hunnicutt in the ever popular series M*A*S*H. His eight years with the memorable show allowed the opportunity to both write and direct several episodes, earning him nominations for Director's Guild and Emmy Awards. His first production experience outside of M*A*S*H was the CBS-TV film "Memorial Day", in which he starred opposite actress Shelley Fabares, who he would go on to marry on December 31, 1984. On the documentary front, among many others, Farrell co-hosted "Saving the Wildlife" for PBS, hosted "The Best of the National Geographic Specials" and had a great adventure scuba diving with his children, Michael and Erin, among hundreds of sharks in French Polynesia for "The World of Audubon". Together with partner Marvin Minoff, he formed Farrell/Minoff Productions Farrell/Minoff's first production was "Dominick and Eugene", a film starring Tom Hulce and Ray Liotta. After making a number of TV movies, their company produced theatrical film called "Patch Adams", starring Robin Williams. In 1996 Mike was presented the Valentine Davies Award by the Writers Guild of America, given to members: "whose contribution to the entertainment industry and the community-at-large have brought dignity and honor to writers everywhere." In February 1998 Farrell was appointed to a three-year term on the Commission on Judicial Performance, an 11 member California State Commission that adjudicates complaints against judges in the state. 1998 also brought him to NBC-TV"'s "Providence" playing veterinarian Jim Hansen with cast-mates Melina Kanakaredes, Concetta Tomei, Paula Cale and Seth Peterson. In 2002 Mike was elected First Vice President of the Screen Actors Guild in Los Angeles and served three years in that capacity. In 2004 he received the Donald Wright Award from California Attorneys for Criminal Justice, only the third time in its 28 year history that the award has been presented to a recipient who was neither a lawyer nor a judge. Mike joined the podcast to talk about M*A*S*H, Providence, Days of Our Lives and Patch Adams the movie with Robin Williams and the real life doctor. https://m.imdb.com/name/nm0268286/bio
This movie jumps on the bandwagon of two different trends. We've got a beach party movie on our hands with a Beatles inspired rock band at its center. Luckily that means we ended up having a delightful time. Matt does a deep dive into how beach party movies became a thing and even gives a mini review of one he watched. Morgan liked a lot of the songs this time and was really taken by co-star Shelley Fabares. Always pleasing to have nice things to say. Hopefully it'll happen more going forward.
John Cusack goes full Rambo in this movie. That's probably the best part of Hot Pursuit, released May 8th in 1987. Sure, there's also a lot of entertaining hijinks out in the Caribbean like running around, getting lost, being on a ship with a guy who's almost a pirate, and also a handful of car chases... But it's the Cusack being Rambo part that we can't quite get over. Join the Bad Porridge Club on Patreon for TWO bonus episodes each month! https://www.patreon.com/oldiebutagoodiepod Follow the show! Book Vs Movie: Elvis & Me Priscilla Beaulieu Presley's 1986 Autobiography & the 1988 TV Movie What was considered “racy” in the 80s is viewed quite differently now (and for good reason!) Are you lonesome tonight? Listen to this episode of Book Vs Movie with the Margos and feel like you are part of an 80s Book/TV Movie club! Elvis & Me is Priscilla Beaulieu Presley's 1985 autobiography and wow, this caused quite a stir when it was first published. Her extraordinary life story began at 14-years-old meeting the King Of Rock & Roll (Elvis Presley) in 1959 when he was stationed in Germany in the U.S. Army. He was 24 at the time and the person who introduced them, Currie Grant, was married and 27 at the time. (We have THOUGHTS about THAT guy!) None of this would be okay in these times and we realize that this is going to be a very delicate situation to discuss. We want to honor Priscilla's truth while acknowledging that this is not an ideal situation for anyone. Elvis Presley was the biggest star in the world when they met. Priscilla spending her senior year in high school living at Graceland was tabloid fodder for years. So were the sexual dalliances of Elvis who had a thing for his co-stars Ann-Margret, Shelley Fabares, and Juliet Prowse. Also, he was long known to have a fascination for very young girls which may be the reason his manager Colonel Tom Parker told Elvis to marry Priscilla in 1967. Priscilla goes through much of the gossip at the time and gives an unflinching look at the man who would be the father of her daughter--Lisa Marie. Drug use, infidelity, and the King shooting TV shows that featured Robert Goulet get their due. Plus., we learn about how she managed to bring Graceland back from the brink of financial ruin after Elvis' death in 1977. Listen to this episode to hear us talk about the book & TV movie and decide which we like better. In this ep the Margos discuss: Priscilla's fascinating life (and how true is her autobiography) Why her version of their relationship is controversial The King's peculiar life Our love for TV movies of the 80s The cast: Susan Walters (Priscilla,) Dale Midkiff (Elvis,) Linda Miller (Ann Beaulieu,) Jon Cypher (Priscilla's stepfather,) Billy Green Bush (Elvis's father,) Hugh Gillin (Colonel Tom Parker,) and Anne Haney (Elvis's grandmother.) I had my dear pal Poseidon from the very funny blog Poseidons Underground as my co-host. We were delighted to have the very busy Kathy Garver, best known as Cissy in Family Affair. Kathy started acting at three years old. She was in some pretty big flicks. She was the double for Pearl, the adorable tyke being menaced by one of my dreamboats Robert Mitchum In Night Of The Hunter Kathy was in the boat scene when they are floating away from their moms murderer and their fiendish stepfather. She told us about her memories of Robert Mitchum, Charles Laughton, who directed this film and never directed again. Also we head what a sweetie Lillian Gish was. It was not well received at the time but today it is considered a great film and that Charles Laughton did a great job. The cinematography was amazing. Then she told us about her scene in The Bad Seed she did with Shelley Fabares calling Rhoda (Patty McCormick) a murderer. The scene got cut. She was devastated and her mom wisely told her the scene was too good and they did not want them upstaging Rhoda. It worked. After The Bad Seed she played a slave girl in The Ten Commandments and told us about the actors there. We finally got To Family Affair. WE talked Brian Keith AKA as Uncle Beeeyooooo. Sebastian Cabot and the adorable cherubs Buffy and Jody. Poseidon told us he does not write sad stuff but did for Family Affair. We talked the amazing guest stars, Ida Lupino, Myrna Loy (who Knew) and Heather Angel as Mr French's veddy english nanny Miss Haverstraw. I taled to Poseidon on an earlier podcast that the saddest major fiml actor on one of the shows was Dana Andrews. He appeared as a Friend of Beeyooooo and they moppets found out he was in the slammer for a bit for stealing money from his company. The horror part was Buffy and Jody decide to hide their piggy banks from Dana, the thief..Poor Dana had to watch these two kids talking about him as they hide their piggy banks. His face.. Kathy had to leave us after a half an hour so Poseidon and me talked more about some of these things. I want to thank Kathy Garver for taking time out of her busy squedule to come on the show. My dear Poseidon for being a great co-host. Mostly our listeners. Thanks for listening Grace xoxo Kathy www.kathygarver.com Poseidon Poseidons Underworld https://neptsdepths.blogspot.com You can follow me on facebook www.facebook.com/truestoriesoftinseltown www.truestoriesoftinsetown.com I'll be doing an instagram and twitter feeds ASAP. In this episode of Memphis Type History: The Podcast, Rebecca meets Sheena and Savannah, two spectacular ladies of Graceland, who currently run a Podcast series entitled "Starring Elvis." Whether you're an Elvis fan or not, learning about the movies the artist put his heart into and the songs that came from them is surprising. You'll hear about Sheena and Savannah's Elvis favorites, some Elvis movie history, and what inspired the the two to start this charming series in the first place. It all started with Dawson's Creek. Well, not the show, but the podcast with fans of the show talking about each and every episode. While Sheena and Savannah were inspired by that show's podcast, their Elvis movies podcast takes a whole other bent on the idea, focusing on the movies that really solidified the status of the king in the years after he returned from war. The hosts even run down the list of all the world-renowned actors that were in those early films with Elvis. That's just one reason they say, be careful if you assume all the films are silly or campy. One of the films in particular featured has a really interesting connection to Casablanca. Elvis the Actor Elvis made 31 feature films and even did a couple of concert documentaries, as well. Of those, our guests had some favorites. Our guests are particularly impressed with King Creole because it gives Elvis a real opportunity to show acting skills that were often left out in his films in favor of assumed commercial success. He portrays a character with some real depth, co-stars with Anne Margaret, and the film was directed by Michael Curtiz. Of course, Elvis really shines in the dancing and singing sequences in his films. The ones especially worth checking out—Jailhouse Rock and Love Me Tender. The ladies say those films demonstrate his star power was really connected to his performances within the films. The Leading Ladies Elvis' leading ladies are well-known and many went on to have pretty impressive careers themselves. Ann Margaret, Nancy Sinatra, and Shelley Fabares are just some of the names that came up in our conversation. Of particular note was Ann Margaret performing her own song and having her name in the same size font as Elvis on the movie poster—a bit controversial at the time. Nancy Sinatra also played a big role. When the ladies talked about her connect to Elvis, the former star tweeted at them a note of thanks and that she missed Elvis. The Soundtracks The movies were really groundbreaking because the films were often just opportunities to push out more Elvis music between records. The soundtracks were 45's with 4-5 songs on them. The movie names were often connected to the title song such as "Love Me Tender". If you want to listen to some of the music that true fans often love the most, check out "Pocket Full of Rainbows" or even the song "So Close Yet So Far Away from Paradise" in the movie Harem Scarem. In fact, many of the songs we all know as classic Elvis singles came from film soundtracks and weren't released in any other form. The Invention of the Karate Chop or The Fights Some people believe another of Elvis' many innovations was the old-style movie karate chop move. Our guests tell us about how the fights were a key part of the Elvis films. And yes, he is known for a signature karate chop move. In one movie... he may have karate chopped a Jaguar. Elvis was actually known for being a passionate practicioner of karate. He loved integrating the moves he practiced on his own into any of the fight scenes. He almost never had a stunt double. One night, he was so into practicing for a fight scene, that he stayed up really late chopping wooden blocks until he felt he got the move down for the movie scene. You also may have seen Elvis' custom Gi he had made. Pop Culture Connections We heard a lot more about the various pop culture connections Elvis brought to our country and the world. The craziest thing to think about, is at a time when there was barely tv, no internet or youtube, no social media, etc... he was doing as many as three movies a year and keeping himself connected to his audience. He showed different variations of his work in these films while retaining his place as a star singer and performer. It was a brilliant strategy for keeping relevant and some would say, ultimately, pushed him too far. From television, to movies, to hit records...Shelley Fabares has done it all, and she continues to do so with unmatched grace, humility, and instinctive talent. One of Hollywood’s most enduring and beloved leading ladies, Shelley openly shares the details of her childhood as a department store “fashion model”, and how that led to her first television appearance at the age of 10. In constant onscreen demand from an early age, she appeared in more than 50 television series, from early classics like Annie Oakley to her breakthrough role on The Donna Reed Show. Shelley shares memories of her eight years playing “Mary Stone” and working closely with TV legends Donna Reed, Paul Petersen, and Carl Betz, and then describes the unique experience of becoming an international teen idol with the release of her #1 hit recording of Johnny Angel. As the only female co-star to appear in three of Elvis Presley's movies (Clambake, Girl Happy and Spinout), Shelley describes what it was like meeting “the King” for the first time...and how she still thinks of him as her “favorite leading man”. Shelley then goes on to recount her adult life as an actress on shows like Love, American Style, The Rockford Files, and Fantasy Island and her professional joy working opposite James Caan in the era’s most memorable television movie, Brian’s Song. This is an intimate, open-hearted dialogue with a legendary actress as she shares the realities of Hollywood’s type-casting in the Sixties while giving us a real sense of the personal and professional values that brought her years of success on major hits like One Day at a Time and Coach. It's an engaging conversation with a truly classy lady as she reveals the personal side of the Hollywood "actor's life" that you won’t want to miss!

"Not Just A Company That Makes Records...But A Record Company. When You Think About This...There's Quite A Difference." The Dunhill label was launched with this slogan in May 1965 by Jay Lasker, Lou Adler, Bobby Roberts and Pierre Cossette. The imprint bowed with a single by Adler's wife of the time, Shelley Fabares, "My Prayer" and would continue into the 1970's making wonderful waxings, as well as fostering such talents as Barry McGuire, The Mama's And The Papa's, Grass Roots, P.F. Sloan and so many others. Dunhill was a truly Californian creation at the epicenter of the Los Angeles music scene; a unique independent with lasting impact. Dunhill also happens to be a personal favorite of "Come To The Sunshine" host, Andrew Sandoval, who has sorted through hundreds of Dunhill singles to present you with a dream show of fabulous 45's by: Shelley Fabares/Willie And The Wheels/The Ginger-Snaps featuring Dandee Dawson/The Iguanas/Terry Black/P.F.
