There is a surprising factor that limits your leadership potential – Unresolved trauma. Trauma is a disruption of the patterns our brains trust to navigate life.     Dr.Julia DiGangi is a neuropsychologist who completed her clinical training at a consortium of Harvard Medical School, Boston University School of Medicine, and the US Department of Veterans Affairs. She has nearly two decades of experience studying the connection between our brains and our behavior. Dr. DiGangi has worked with leaders at the White House Press Office, global companies, international NGOs, and US Special Forces. Her understanding of stress, trauma, and resilience is also informed by her work in international development and humanitarian aid, where she served some of the world's most vulnerable communities. The founder of NeuroHealth Partners, a neuropsychology-based consultancy, DiGangi shows people—at work and at home—how to harness the power of the brain to lead more satisfying and emotionally intelligent lives.   Key Takeaways   The Brain's Role: The brain is fundamentally a pattern detection machine, moving us through life largely unconsciously based on past memories and experiences. Trauma Shatters Patterns: Trauma is defined as the violent shattering of expected patterns, causing confusion because it disrupts the brain's meaning-making process. The pain of trauma lies not so much in what happened, but in our response to it - the belief that we are never safe again or can never trust again. Suppressing Emotions Clogs the Nervous System: When we avoid feeling painful emotions, we "shove them down" repeatedly, leading to a lifetime of a clogged emotional pipe or nervous system. Leaders are Limited by Unresolved Trauma: A leader's primary limitation is their inability to see and deal with their past traumas. Childhood survival strategies that were once adaptive can constrain adult leadership. Trust is the Antidote to Uncertainty: The brain is allergic to uncertainty, but seeking external certainty only breeds more anxiety. The opposite of uncertainty is not certainty but surrender and trust.   Sponsors and Promotions:   DUER: To experience the ultimate blend of style, comfort, and performance in your denim, head to shopduer.com/DIVINE and get 20% off sitewide on DUER's revolutionary stretch jeans and apparel.   Momentus: Designed by the world's best experts, used by the world's best teams and athletes, and made for all of us.   https://www.livemomentous.com, and use code DIVINE for 20% off your first order.   Defender:  Ready for adventure? How do we learn to own our triggers, stop blaming our partner, overcome jealousy, and heal toxicity in our relationships?    'Emotions are the Google Maps of your relationship', according to today's guest, Dr. Julia DiGangi. And instead of ignoring our profound innate intelligence, we need to learn to guide our behavior in more intelligent ways.   This starts with developing radical self-love, acceptance, and attunement, as we use our past adversity to empower ourselves and take greater personal responsibility as we navigate a life where we don't get stuck emotionally.      On Today's Podcast, You'll Learn: - What are our (unrealistic) expectations of our partner? - How do we stop blaming our partner? - Understanding YOUR trigger as energy for change - How do we deal with our triggers? - The importance of radical self-love and acceptance - How can we overcome jealousy? - Understanding our survival instinct - What makes a relationship toxic, and how can you heal the toxicity? - What is emotional power? - The 8 Neural Energetic Codes For more information, visit https://myersdetox.com/drjuliadigangi   How Toxic Are You? Heavy metals like lead, arsenic, mercury, and aluminum never went away. They are still present in home building materials, furniture, food, beverages, and more. Finding ways to reduce exposure to these heavy metals (and many more) is incredibly important. To do that effectively, people first need to know which heavy metals they are being exposed to — if any. This quiz was designed to evaluate individual risk factors for heavy metal exposure, and to gauge whether getting tested for heavy metals is recommended or not. Believe it or not, there are simple at-home tests people can take if they are being exposed — this quiz will determine if it's worth it to take one.

Project Manager Burnout There is so much focus these days on getting more done with less. Delivering faster. Increasing efficiency. Being excellent at work while rocking it all well at home too, right? And though I'm all for staying focused and productive, here's something I've observed. One consequence of trying to stay hyper-productive and being everything you can possibly be--or feel like you should be--can be increased stress. Less downtime. More hours. More caffeine. Less sleep. And all of that can lead to burnout. So what can we do about that? Today I'm excited to introduce you to Dr. Neha Sangwan. She's the author of a new book entitled  Powered by Me: From Burned Out to Fully Charged at Work and in Life. In this episode, you'll get a better idea of what leads to burnout, beyond just the typical drivers that come to mind, such as physical exhaustion. Neha provides practical ideas and techniques to help us catch when we're starting to drift towards burnout. It's a discussion I've been looking forward to sharing with you! You can learn more about Neha and her work at NehaSangwan.com. For more on this topic, check out: Episodes 106 and 132, with Tom Rath about his books on these themes. When Emotions Are Rising On Your Project Let's say you're sitting in a meeting tomorrow for a project you are leading. You're looking to get sign-off and, based on the pre-meetings you had with key stakeholders, the meeting should go smoothly. But seemingly out of the blue, a key stakeholder speaks up and starts sharing objections. Right there in front of everyone, which includes your boss, by the way. Things are starting to derail and you can feel some anger starting to build up. If we could see a thought bubble over you, you might be saying, “I can't believe they're sabotaging this! They didn't bring any of this up when we talked about it before the meeting! They're throwing me and my project under the bus!” That's a pivotal leadership moment right there. Maybe for you, it's a demanding boss. Or a deeply emotional situation outside of work. The critical issue is this: How do we respond? Does it help, or do we make it worse? How do we navigate the emotional rollercoaster of leading teams and projects—and families and friendships? Our ability to do that can make an enormous difference in our careers and life. In this episode, we're continuing a series of discussions on the topic of our emotions. And I'm excited to introduce you to Dr. Julia Digangi. For many years, Julia has worked with individuals who have endured the worst traumas, from survivors of domestic abuse to combat veterans, and helped them transform their energy and rise to powerful new heights. Based on her experience, she has recently published a remarkably insightful new book Energy Rising: The Neuroscience of Leading with Emotional Power. What I love about this book is that it gives a perspective on navigating the emotional challenges of our life in a way I've not seen in any other books. It's deeply based in research and practice but it's accessible to all of us, even if we don't know our amygdala from our anterior cingulate cortex. Ha! You can learn more about Julia and her work at DrJuliaDigangi.com/. For more on this topic, check out: Episode 394, with Joshua Freedman about his book on emotional intelligence. Episode 395, with Josefine Campbell about her book on helping when you and your team are low on energy, and Episode 396, with Thomas Curran about his book on perfectionism. Gift a Loved One a Head Start With Their Career Do you know someone who is in college or maybe recently graduated? My experience is there are a growing number of people who dread being asked the question, “So, what's the plan?” When it comes to their career, they have no freaking idea! I bring this up because I want you to check out our new course entitled just that: No Freaking Idea: How to Navigate Career Uncertainty. It's a career guide for people who don't know what they want to do, and it has been so fun to hear the feedback on the course. I wrap up our series on Emotional Power with the Big Idea, The Big Takeaway & The Big Action, after incredible discussions with Dr Julia Digangi, author of Energy Rising - The Neuroscience of Leading With Emotional Power and Britt Frank, author of The Science of Stuck: Breaking Through Inertia To Find Your Path Forward. Here I'm taking the opportunity to pull out some of the primary issues I see us blind to as a culture regarding emotions. For context, I'm now focused on a goal of emotional mastery. Or you could say, spending the rest of my life endeavoring to better master my emotions. I'd ask you to think about it like mastering a team of majestic horses; you do so by gently, yet firmly, joining with them and nurturing them along with yourself to make progress in the desired direction. You don't let them run loose by venting and emoting, and you also don't stuff and deny them. And the heart of your emotional mastery is not leading the horses, but first, leading yourself. And again, most all of us hearing this right now are existing on the side of 1) Unfettered emotions: negative feelings running amok and overwhelming you, or 2) Imprisoned emotions: walled off, rejected, and ignored. Both sides are controlling you. Leading you. This is your chance to start understanding, leading, and mastering your emotions, and from that, your life. Here we go with 7 keys for emotional mastery and then the big action. As people age, they may have trouble remembering recent events. If you know older people who seem to forget things, it is important to realize that memory loss isn't all inevitable. There are a couple of reasons people become forgetful that you can do something about. This episode begins with an explanation and strategies that can really help. Source: William Cone, PhD author of Stop Memory Loss (https://amzn.to/3PNKIOX). Your negative emotions get triggered by a lot of things in life. How you handle and channel those emotions in difficult times determines your “emotional power.” According to some interesting science, it seems many of us can use some help with those emotions by first understanding how they work in the brain. This is according to Julia DiGangi, a leading neuropsychologist and author of the book ENERGY RISING: The Neuroscience of Leading with Emotional Power (https://amzn.to/463rDhu) Listen and you will get a better understanding of why you do what you do when your emotions kick in. Yet, when you are in one, it can sometimes feel uncomfortable or even creepy. And even though we know they are safe, there is always that worry that the one you are in is not. We begin a series on Emotional Power. Everyday life happens around us. We judge it all by how we feel about it, and we naturally trust and believe our experience. My guest today however says it's our emotions that are the final judge of all our experiences. Not fact. Not our logic. But our emotions. To take it further she cites, “The very meaning in your life is determined by the emotions you have about it.” And what you're about to learn is you have perceptions and resulting patterns programmed into your mind that are influencing how you perceive life overall, good and bad. Of course it's the bad patterns that are sabotaging you, and this is our focus today, as we can correct these patterns. My expert guest on the topic is Dr. Julia DiGangi. Dr DiGangi is a neuropsychologist, who completed her residency at Harvard Medical School, Boston University School of Medicine, and the US Department of Veterans Affairs, and she is the author of a new book called Energy Rising: The Neuroscience of Leading with Emotional Power. Dr DiGangi has nearly two decades of experience studying the connection between our brains and our behavior and has worked with leaders around the world including the White House Press Office and the US Special Forces. Dr DiGangi shows people—at work and at home—how to harness the power of the brain to lead more satisfying and emotionally intelligent lives. We live in a world where science and emotions are viewed as radically disparate things and I have Dr DiGangi, here to dispel that.
