In this episode we're joined from Nashville by acclaimed critic, author and broadcaster Ann Powers for a discussion of her new Joni Mitchell book. Starting in Ann's native Seattle, we hear about her early '80s pieces for The Rocket before moving on to her stints at the San Francisco Weekly and the New York Times. Mention of Piece by Piece, the 2005 book she wrote with Tori Amos, leads us to clips from Steven Daly's 1998 audio interview with Amos and a broader conversation about the wave of female singer-songwriters that engulfed pop music in the '90s. Ann's noughties move to California and the L.A. Times prompts discussion of the "dreamlike" night she spent chez Prince on New Year's Eve, 2008. From there we jump to the life and music of an artist Prince admired more than most: Joni Mitchell, subject of Ann's remarkable new book Travelling. With particular focus of 50-year-old jazz-rock masterpiece Court and Spark, we explore the richness and complexity of Joni's '70s work, her deep engagement with the Black American experience, and the worship she's experiencing in the wake of the recent "Joni Jams". Many thanks to special guest Ann Powers. Travelling: on the Path of Joni Mitchell is published by Harper Collins and available now from all good bookshops. Pieces discussed: Ride the Unicorn: Tori Amos, Sarah McLachlan, Tanita Tikaram, Tori Amos (1998), My Night with Prince, Joni's Jazz-rock and Fusion's Big Bang, A New Canon: In Pop Music, Women Belong at the Center of the Story, Louise: Sheepish in wolverine's clothing, Millie Jackson: The Poor People's Queen and Chvrches: "It only takes two seconds to say: I don't agree with white supremacy."
Husk I kan læse med i bladet på vores Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/NogetVedMusikken/ Playliste: One-Eyed Jacks - Falling Gangway - Going away Fielfraz - Shine The Justified Ancients Of Mu Mu - It's grim up north Gary Portnoy - Theme from Cheers (Where everybody knows your name) Vanilla Ice - Ice ice baby Rick Astley - In the name of love Yasmin - Wanna dance

Helen O'Hara - Dexys Midnight Runners & Tanita Tikaram - in conversation with David Eastaugh https://www.helenohara-violin.com/biog She was a member and violinist of Dexys Midnight Runners from 1982 to 1987, including performing on songs such as "Come on Eileen", and in 2021 rejoined the band. She was offered a place with Rowland's new line-up of Dexys—the result of a session she and two other violinists from the university had carried out as part of Rowland's decision to revamp the band's sound and image. Rowland has said that he saw O'Hara standing at a bus stop with her violin case and stopped to meet her. The more prosaic truth is that of the three violinists at the session she was the only one with any rock and roll experience, and therefore the only one to be able to play a solo by feel. This she did well enough to be immediately drafted into Dexys. To fit in with Dexys' Celtic image, she took the stage last name of "O'Hara". Within months she was touring the UK, followed by the US, as "Come On Eileen" reached #1 in the charts in both countries
“Minute Taker” is the musical project of Ben McGarvey, who's active as an independent artist since the late 2000s. His latest album “Wolf Hours” is one of the most dedicated musical statements in today's Synth Pop and will be of very high interest to fans who love actual 80s pop music like Fleetwood Mac's “Mirage”, Genesis' self-titled 1983 album or Tanita Tikaram's “Ancient Heart”. In this Episode Ben tells us where to begin when you wanna have real good music videos, why the stock plug-ins of your DAW might be much better than you think they are or why it can be a good thing to do an acoustic cover version every now and then. Ben will also give some information about his experiences with Crowdfunding and how he built his own subscription model without using Patreon. Apart from that we'll be talking about his music, his many collaborations and cover songs and which gear he used in the recording process for his latest album “Wolf Hours”. There could have been no DEXY'S MIDNIGHT RUNNERS without violinist HELEN O'HARA. She has an amazing story to tell and she's written it all into a memoir titled ‘What's She Like', named after the Dexy's Midnight Runners song that she herself inspired. It's an exuberant, joyful account of a classical musical student who suddenly finds herself on Top of the Pops. What's She Like takes in Helen's time working with Tanita Tikaram and Graham Parker before she walked away from music for more than two decades at the start of the 1990s. But inevitably her relationship with Dexys front man KEVIN ROWLAND –both personal and professional – is at the heart of the book. It is even emblazoned on the cover. Helen O'Hara is actually her Dexys name, the one founder and front man Kevin Rowland anointed her with. During our chat, Helen tells us about her early years, that stage name and the dynamics of being a member of one of the 80's most popular British bands. She talks about her enduring friendship with Kevin Rowland so many years after their relationship ended. And she talks about why the recent re-release of the song 'Come On Eileen' was so incredibly important for Rowland. I LOVE YOU.....
Madonna, John Grant, Carla Bruni, Blancmange, Tanita Tikaram, Portishead og Abba's landsmænd/kvinder i First Aid Kit og The Real Group.
Kate Bush elske Elton John, Simple Minds klare Kraftwerk, Liza Minelli tage Tanita Tikaram, Frankie Goes To Hollywood bruge Bruce Springsteen + Art Of Noise plage Prince.

New Talk Art! We meet leading artist Sonia Boyce. Boyce's practice is fundamentally collaborative and inclusive, fostering a participatory approach that questions artistic authorship and cultural difference. Last month, she became the first Black female artist to represent Britain at the Venice Biennale, the world's oldest international art exhibition. The work she presented in the British Pavilion won the prestigious prize, the Golden Lion. Six years before, she had been the first Black British woman to get elected to the Royal Academy of Arts. The British Council presents Feeling Her Way by Sonia Boyce at the British Pavilion for La Biennale di Venezia, running from 23 April – 27 November 2022. Boyce's powerful exhibition explores the potential of collaborative play as a route to innovation. The installation brings together video works featuring five Black* female musicians (Poppy Ajudha, Jacqui Dankworth MBE, Sofia Jernberg, Tanita Tikaram and composer Errollyn Wallen CBE) who were invited to improvise, interact and play with their voices. The video works take centre stage among Boyce's signature tessellating wallpapers and golden geometric structures, and the Pavilion's rooms are filled with sounds – sometimes harmonious, sometimes clashing – embodying feelings of freedom, power and vulnerability. This new commission expands on Boyce's Devotional Collection, built over more than two decades and spanning more than three centuries, which honours the substantial contribution of Black British female musicians to transnational culture.Artist and academic Sonia Boyce OBE RA (b. London, 1962) came to prominence in the early 1980s as a key figure in the burgeoning Black Arts Movement of that time with figurative pastel drawings and photo collages that addressed issues of race and gender in Britain. In 1987, she became one of the youngest artists of her generation to have her artwork acquired by Tate and the first Black-British female artist to enter the collection. Since the 1990s Boyce's practice has taken a significant multi-media and improvisational turn by bringing people together in a dynamic, social practice that encourages others to speak, sing or move in relation to the past and the present. Incorporating film, photography, print and sound in multi-media installations, Boyce's practice is fundamentally collaborative and inclusive, fostering a participatory approach that questions artistic authorship and cultural difference. At the heart of her work are questions about the production and reception of unexpected gestures, with an underlying interest in the intersection of personal and political subjectivities.Follow @SoniaBoyceArtist and @SimonLeeGallery. I'm delighted to be joined by musician, singer, songwriter, composer, and record producer - Rod Argent. In a career spanning more than 50 years, Rod is the keyboardist, founder and leader of the English rock band The Zombies. Their second album Odessey and Oracle is often mentioned by Paul Weller as his all time favourite. Rod has had an incredible career - continuing to perform live and release new music with The Zombies - he was also once part of Ringo Starr's All-Starr Band and has recorded with The Who, Chris Rea, Roger Daltrey, Paul Carrack and Andrew Lloyd Webber. He's also been producer for the likes of Gilbert O'Sullivan, Tanita Tikaram and Nanci Griffith. In 2018, Paul Weller released his 14th solo album True Meanings, with Rod Argent contributing to two stand out tracks (on an album full of stand out tracks!) - he plays Hammond organ on The Soul Searchers and Mellotron & Piano on White Horses. You can find more info on Rod's music in my show notes at paulwellerfanpodcast.com/episode-92-rod-argent Thanks for listening - make sure that you subscribe / follow and leave a review - and if you want to support the podcast financially, you can buy me a virtual coffee (£3) or our new official merchandise at paulwellerfanpodcast.com/store

Hi! My name is Terry J. Aman and this installment marks my 79th episode of VideoFuzzy, reporting the progress I've made in cataloging nearly 3,000 VHS transfers and digital recordings. Wishing everyone a safe and healthy 2022! For this installment, titled "The Play's the Thing," in my Friday Night Feature I talk about show-within-a-show plot points I encountered in "Leverage," "Burn Notice," "The Closer," "Monk," "Hung," "In Plain Sight," "The Simpsons," "Drop Dead Diva" and "Better Off Ted," and their place and use in productions. In Cross Connections, I explore K. Callan's appearances as a Golden Thread through a lot of the media I grew up watching and throughout my media collection, and representing the tightest connection I've found so far to "Knives Out" through Frances Conroy in "Remington Steele" and Ed Begley Jr. in "St. Elsewhere" to "Six Feet Under," binding quite a few shows to the mystical center of my media collection in my "Studio Six Feet Under" challenge. I also noted Justina Machado in the "One Day at a Time" reboot puts every Norman Lear production also one step removed from "Six Feet Under." And K Callan's involvement in several shows featured in Chris Cooling's podcast "Forgotten TV" gave me a great opportunity for a quick shoutout to that excellent production. Other connections I talk about in my Classic Collection discussion include Christine Baranski's appearance in "Psych" with the more usual recurring character of Cybill Shepherd in "Cybill." Also, John Schneider's appearances in "Dirty Sexy Money," "Nip/Tuck" and "Leverage," and connections through "The Closer," "Cougar Town," "Drop Dead Diva" and "Rescue Me." In Fond Reflections, together with the loss to the world of Betty White, I extend my deep condolences to the "All About Agatha" podcast team, with the sudden passing of cohost Catherine Brobeck, celebrating her contributions in superlative discussion, debate and insights into the vast majority of mystery novelist, Queen of Crime Agatha Christie's body of work, and all the best to Kemper Donovan in the wake of the devastating loss of his friend and cohost in this more than five year journey. It was so good to have this too brief acquaintance. In my Classic VHS-to-DVD collection, discussion of dustups on "Rescue Me," additional cross connections, a screen capture of cool art I saw in "Burn Notice" I posted to VideoFuzzy's Instagram account, a clip from Portishead's "Only You" in the cold open for "Warehouse 13," and the Comedy Central Roast of Joan Rivers. Also, tracking the car crash I foreshadowed a couple episodes back, documenting some weirdness I encountered in hopping from Binder No. 6 to Binder No. 7 – a blank disc, two copies of disc 1241 (now marked 1241-1 and 1241-2), and the odd displacement of Disc 1449, now exhaustively documented among this latest installment of "History's Most Boring Mysteries." In my Current direct-to-digital collection, discussion of "Doctor Who: Flux," exploring Weeping Angels, Division, an Ood, the Mad Mole of Liverpool, a snake alien involved from the earliest beginnings of UNIT, and at the center of it all, a tri-phasic Doctor and her team with chameleon arch tech, a grumpy doggo, a planet called Time, the Temple of the Mora and a confrontation with the Vanquishers while a Gallifreyan scientist tries to destroy the universe from outside of it. Also, commentary on "Confessions of a Dangerous Mind," "Queens," "Live in Front of a Studio Audience: The Facts of Life and Diff'rent Strokes" and the 2002 Bruce Willis movie "Bandits" featuring Tanita Tikaram's "Twist in my Sobriety." And in What I've Been Watching, Ralph and I have been watching "My Hero Academia," and we recently took in the prequel installment, "The King's Man." Fun show. Finally, a link to my eighth installment of "VideoFuzzy: The Video" with comments from my Friday Night Feature: https://youtu.be/Xdn6tRm2LU4 TOP TEN: Here's a "top ten" episode guide for people looking for a quick read-in on this blog and podcast effort.

Rod Argent started out in the Zombies, for which he wrote the classics "She's Not There," "Tell Her No" and "Time of the Season." After the band broke up Argent formed a group under his own name and with Chris White composed their Top Five hit "Hold Your Head Up." Then with partner Peter Van Hooke he produced Tanita Tikaram's multi-platinum album "Ancient Heart" with its MTV staple "Twist in My Sobriety." And now he's in the Zombies once again! Not only does Rod tell the stories of the acts and the hits, he details what it was like growing up in the U.K. in the days of shortages, when the world was still in black and white. Argent is an amazing raconteur, you'll love hearing his stories! Learn more about your ad-choices at https://www.iheartpodcastnetwork.com

A little while ago we did a Book Shambles Livestream as part of the Royal Albert Home series and now, here it is, in podcast form. Robin and Josie co-host with Science Shambles co-host Helen Czerski and they are joined by astronaut Samantha Cristoforetti to chat about her new book, Diary of an Apprentice Astronaut, as well as musician Tanita Tikaram whose music was taken to space by a number of astronauts, including Samantha. As this was a livestream recording there may be the odd tech glitch not present in a normal episode. We’re back after a week off during the holidays and its straight down to business. Its another artsy-fartsy episode that also includes a dirty cop… You think the Vice team would question anyone’s willing involvement from outside the team as they’ve been burned so many times. I guess they just have a good heart and really, REALLY want to trust people. This episode has drugs, has art, has buying art with drugs! The team gets double-crossed leaving Sonny to make a middle of the road Florida Gators level tackle. Dominic wants to spend the whole time talking about Sigmar. Melissa defends Sonny’s lack of art knowledge and John gets another chance to talk about ol’ Slow Hand. Its a quality episode of Vice and a fantastic episode of your Miami Vice podcast. By the way, for a limited time for all new and existing Patrons, we’re offering a custom sticker pack! Anyone who has a successful payment in January and is still a Patron on Feb. 1 will receive a custom sticker pack from the show. Tanita Tikaram became an overnight success when she was only a teenager; her debut album "Ancient Heart" sold four million copies in the late 80s and gave her hit singles like 'Twist in My Sobriety'. Since then she's gone on to release eight more albums, with some rather interesting silences in between - when she almost gave up on music altogether. In 2016 she toured Europe with her ninth album, 'Closer to the People'. In Private Passions, Tanita Tikaram talks to Michael Berkeley about the effect of that massive early success, and about going to live in Italy to escape the rock music world. It was a wilderness moment, when she wasn't even sure she should be a musician. At this point, in her 30s, she began to discover classical music, through the work of legendary performers like pianists Rosalyn Tureck and Clara Haskil. She talks about how Bach opened up a new musical world to her, and how listening to classical music - and taking classical singing lessons - helps her find her "groove" when she is composing her own songs. With Bach, Vivaldi, Ravel, Mozart's Piano Concerto No.23, Canteloube's Songs of the Auvergne, and Duke Ellington. Produced by Elizabeth Burke A Loftus Media production for BBC Radio 3.
Suzy chats to singer/songwriter Tanita Tikaram about her music and influences.

After her smash hit “Twist in my Sobriety” and her successful album "Ancient Heart" she went travelling around the world with a backpack.
