Plato's Intellectual Roots and First Visit. Guest Author: Professor James Romm. Plato's early life was shaped by the reign of the 30 Tyrants in Athens, including his relative Critias. The execution of his teacher, Socrates, further disillusioned him with traditional democracy. He developed a philosophy centered on an unseen world of perfect "forms." Influenced by Pythagorean mathematics, he viewed numbers as a way to understand the universe's abstract essences. Invited by Dion, Plato visited Syracuse in 385 BCE to explore potential autocratic reforms. This visit failed when Dionysius the Elder dismissed his ethical teachings. Plato then returned to Athens to found the Academy. 2

This week we’ve studied what our lives looks like without the Holy Spirit. Without God’s influence, without God’s direction over our life, we naturally drift toward dysfunction, selfishness, broken relationships, and sin. Left to ourselves, our sinful nature becomes the driving force behind our decisions, our attitudes, and our actions. That’s exactly what Paul describes in Galatians 5. He paints an honest picture of what life looks like when the flesh is in control. It’s not a list meant to shame us – it’s a mirror showing us what every one of us is capable of apart from God. But thank God, we’re not left there. The good news is that God didn’t simply save us from our sin; He gave us His very presence. When we place our faith in Jesus, the Holy Spirit comes to live within us. We are no longer left to navigate this life in our own strength. We have a Helper, a Guide, a Teacher, and the very power of God at work in us. So before we can understand the fruit of the Spirit, we have to understand the Spirit Himself. Who is the Holy Spirit? Why did God give Him to us? What is His purpose in our lives? And what does it actually look like to live under His influence every day? The fruit of the Spirit isn’t about trying harder to become a better person. It’s about allowing the Holy Spirit to transform us from the inside out. I spent many years not understanding who the Holy Spirit is and what it mean to have this influence in my life. Maybe you’re in that place. This doesn’t quite make sense to you. It can be a little confusing, so lets slow down to understand. Quite simply, the Holy Spirit is God HIMSELF. God reveals himself to us in 3 ways which we call the trinity. The Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit – all God. Think of it this way, the Father loved us, the Son saved us, the Spirit changes us. The Holy Spirit is God’s very own presence dwelling within us. Before Jesus returned to Heaven after his crucifixion, he made an incredible promise. In John 14: 16-17, “I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate, who will never leave you. He is the Holy Spirit, who leads into all truth. You will know him, because he lives with you now and later will be in you.” In verse 23, Jesus says, “We will come and make our home in each one who loves me.” Jesus had been walking with his disciples. He had been living with them, teaching them, guiding them. In flesh, he was there with them. Now, before he returns to Heaven, he is promising for everyone who loves him, they will be given ANOTHER who will actually live in you and never leave you. The Greek, word translated “another” means another of the same kind. So we have been given someone exactly like Jesus in nature and purpose to live inside of us. That’s the Holy Spirit! The Holy Spirit makes God’s presence permanent in everyone who believes in him. As real as Jesus walked this earth as God in human form, God now lives within us in Spirit form. The Holy Spirit empowers us to live like Jesus. So this isn’t about trying harder and harder, this is about allowing God to live through us. In the Old Testament, God’s Spirit dwelt in the tabernacle and later in the temple. Occasionally his Spirit would come upon specific people for specific purposes. Through the cleansing power of Jesus to make us holy and righteous, God Spirit is now available to each of us and we become his temple. Paul writes in 1 Corinthians 6:19, “Your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, who lives in you and was given to you by God.” For real, God now lives within us! My mind can’t comprehend that, but by faith I choose to believe it. Do you? Let’s look at 3 things the Holy Spirit does: He teaches us, empowers us and transforms us. The Holy Spirit teaches us. When you read the Bible and actually understand it, that’s the work of the Holy Spirit. When you listen to this podcast or a sermon and it hits just right, that’s the work of the Holy Spirit. When you’re living your regular life and you remember what God said about it, that’s the work of the Holy Spirit. What a lot of people describe as a “gut feeling” is actually the prompting of the Holy Spirit! The Holy Spirit empowers us. Acts 1:8, “You will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you.” Have you ever been stronger than you ever thought you could be? Girl, that was the Holy Spirit. Have you ever had the power to do things you never thought you could do? That’s the power from the Holy Spirit. We’re so quick to think we’re weak and incapable, but as a believer, remember who is living within you. God himself is inside of you! His power is in you! So yes, you do have the strength for this through the Holy Spirit. Yes, you are good enough. Yes, you are capable. Remember what’s in you! And ultimately what the Holy Spirit does within us is he transforms us. That’s where the Fruit of the Spirit comes in in Galatians 5. WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT, we are changed naturally. This change isn’t something we have to force and will, it’s a change that grows in us and makes us more like Jesus. That’s the goal of the Holy Spirit, to make us more and more like Jesus. As we move to the right side of our list and begin to see what it looks like to live under the influence of the Holy Spirit, rather than without him, think of it like this: If you are under the influence of alcohol, you think different, you talk different, you walk different, you have different emotions, and you make different decisions. Why? Because you’re under the influence of that alcohol so you operate different. Now, think of the influence of the Holy Spirit in your life. It changes everything. You think different under the influence of the Holy Spirit. The way you see things changes. The way you see people changes. Your thought process is changed. You talk different under the influence of the Holy Spirit. You don’t even want to be in the conversations you were once in. You walk different with different emotions, making different decisions. Under the influence of the Holy Spirit, your desires are literally changed. Your heart begins to align with God’s heart and you begin to pursue the things he created you for. And what happens when there’s a different life within us – FRUIT! Fruit is evidence of life. An apple tree doesn’t struggle to tape apples to its branches to look more like an apple tree. An apple tree just naturally produces apples. When the Holy Spirit lives within us, we don’t have to struggle and strive, we just surrender and then we naturally produce the Fruit of the Spirit. This is what makes us more and more like Jesus. Today, host John Norlin shares a simple strategy for connecting with students, even thought who may have been hard to reach: The Student Becomes the Teacher. By asking students what they could teach you, educators can gain personal insight that opens the door to genuine connection, often in less than three minutes. He also explains how a small investment of time outside the classroom, looking up something a student cares about, can change the entire dynamic of a relationship, and why that kind of intentional move is not one more thing on the plate, it is the plate. In this conversation, John offers important reminders for educators and leaders: Asking students what they could teach you is a low-burden, high-impact way to learn something personal about even the hardest-to-reach kids. A few minutes of follow-through, like looking something up and referencing it at the door the next day, signals to a student that you see them as a person, not just a learner. Students notice when an adult makes an intentional move to connect with them, and that moment can shift a relationship that nothing else has been able to crack. Iran negotiations, Keir Starmer's resignation, Jennifer Honka, and Jeremy Clarkson headline today's A.M. Update. JD Vance says talks in Switzerland accomplished four key goals: keeping the Strait of Hormuz open, building a de-confliction mechanism for the regional ceasefire, securing UN nuclear inspections, and establishing a direct communication line with Iran, while Scott Bessent confirms a 60-day licensing window for Iranian oil sales and Trump says crude is flowing at record volumes through the Strait. UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer announces his resignation, making him the seventh British PM in ten years, and Aaron ties the chaos directly to the country's collapsing Christian foundation, where only 6% of adults now identify as practicing Christians. A sixth suspect, Jordan W. Rinker, is publicly identified in the foiled drone and sniper plot against the UFC Freedom 250 event. A Denver Public Schools teacher named Jennifer Honka is fired after an administrative law judge finds she graded students on same-sex kissing skits in French class, and Aaron asks what kind of worldview produces an adult who thinks that's a reasonable lesson plan. Aaron closes with Jeremy Clarkson's cancer remission news and a deep dive into Clarkson's Farm, using a healthy pregnant cow killed over an inconclusive tuberculosis test as a window into Britain's broader collapse into bureaucratic self-worship.

Every great teacher has something students can't find in a textbook: themselves. In this episode of Teach Me, Teacher, Jacob sits down with educator and author Jay Wamsted to discuss how teaching becomes transformational when we stop trying to fit a mold and start embracing our own originality. While Jay's latest novel, The Lockdown Artist, serves as the backdrop for the conversation, the heart of this episode is about the people behind the lesson plans. Jay shares why he chose fiction as a way to wrestle with the questions that have followed him throughout his years in the classroom—questions about belonging, curiosity, relationships, and the kind of schools we're creating for students. Together, Jacob and Jay explore an idea that every educator needs to hear: your personality isn't separate from your teaching—it is your teaching. The stories you tell, the passions you share, the music you love, the way you laugh, and the way you see the world become the "hook" students attach to. Long before they remember your content, they remember you. The conversation is a reminder that students don't need another perfect teacher. They need authentic adults who are willing to bring their whole selves into the classroom. Because when teachers embrace what makes them unique, they create spaces where students feel permission to do the same. If you've ever wondered what truly makes a classroom unforgettable, this episode offers a simple answer: it starts with the courage to be yourself.

#429 In this podcast episode, Guy talked with Viola Rose about the collective sense of change happening in the world and why she believed people were being called to live more from the heart. Viola explained how the mind often created reality through duality, while the heart offered a path toward unity, love, and deeper inner peace. She shared practices for moving awareness from the head into the heart and described how this helped people heal trauma, quiet the mind, and live with more ease. They also discussed the Merkaba, sound healing, the power of the voice, and how nature, vibration, and frequency supported personal transformation. By the end, Viola reflected that while she did not claim to know all the answers, she had chosen to live with love, service, joy, and trust in the mystery of life. About Viola: I am a "Transformational Sound Artist" and have been combining Music and Healing as "Sound-Healing" in my own inspired way for over 25 years. A Multi-Instrumentalist and inspired Vocalist, I enjoy playing Handpan, Gong, various Flutes, Shamanic drum, Sansula, Didgeridoo, and more. Yet, for sure, my favorite instrument is my voice. I am a facilitator for Drunvalo Melchizedek's "School of Remembering". I completed my Teacher training with Drunvalo in 2012. Since then I have taught about 100 4-day Awakening The Illuminated Heart workshops to well over 1000 people all over the West coast and Hawaii, and over the last 3 years online as well. I have also shared this information at many transformational festivals and events. I am also a Certified Gong Practitioner - through Gong Master Metab Benton's school. Ecclesiastes 1, 12 // Jonathan NeefThis sermon explores the cyclical nature of life and the search for meaning as described in the book of Ecclesiastes. We look at the stark observations of the teacher in chapter 1 regarding the vanity of human toil and the pursuit of things "under the sun." By contrasting the weariness of endless cycles with the concluding wisdom in chapter 12, this study helps us find a grounded purpose that remains steady even when life feels fleeting.SERMON NOTES (YouVersion): https://bible.com/events/49623973 PRAYER REQUESTS: https://ccefc.ccbchurch.com/goto/forms/2542/responses/new26.06.21

That You May Believe, Part 22 John 11:1-44 John 11:1-3 Now a certain man was ill, Lazarus of Bethany, the village of Mary and her sister Martha. 2 It was Mary who anointed the Lord with ointment and wiped his feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was ill. 3 So the sisters sent to him, saying, “Lord, he whom you love is ill.” John 11:4 But when Jesus heard it he said, “This illness does not lead to death. It is for the glory of God, so that the Son of God may be glorified through it.” John 11:5 Now Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus. John 11:6 So, when he heard that Lazarus was ill, he stayed two days longer in the place where he was. John 11:7-8 Then after this he said to the disciples, “Let us go to Judea again.” 8 The disciples said to him, “Rabbi, the Jews were just now seeking to stone you, and are you going there again?” John 11:9-10 Jesus answered, “Are there not twelve hours in the day? If anyone walks in the day, he does not stumble, because he sees the light of this world. 10 But if anyone walks in the night, he stumbles, because the light is not in him.” John 11:11-13 After saying these things, he said to them, “Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep, but I go to awaken him.” 12 The disciples said to him, “Lord, if he has fallen asleep, he will recover.” 13 Now Jesus had spoken of his death, but they thought that he meant taking rest in sleep. John 11:14-15 Then Jesus told them plainly, “Lazarus has died, 15 and for your sake I am glad that I was not there, so that you may believe. But let us go to him.” John 11:16 So Thomas, called the Twin, said to his fellow disciples, “Let us also go, that we may die with him.” John 11:17-19 Now when Jesus came, he found that Lazarus had already been in the tomb four days. 18 Bethany was near Jerusalem, about two miles off, 19 and many of the Jews had come to Martha and Mary to console them concerning their brother. John 11:20-22 So when Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went and met him, but Mary remained seated in the house. 21 Martha said to Jesus, “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died. 22 But even now I know that whatever you ask from God, God will give you.” John 11:23-24 Jesus said to her, “Your brother will rise again.” 24 Martha said to him, “I know that he will rise again in the resurrection on the last day.” John 11:25-26 Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live, 26 and everyone who lives and believes in me shall never die. Do you believe this?” John 11:27 She said to him, “Yes, Lord; I believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God, who is coming into the world.” John 11:28-30 When she had said this, she went and called her sister Mary, saying in private, “The Teacher is here and is calling for you.” 29 And when she heard it, she rose quickly and went to him. 30 Now Jesus had not yet come into the village, but was still in the place where Martha had met him. John 11:31-32 When the Jews who were with her in the house, consoling her, saw Mary rise quickly and go out, they followed her, supposing that she was going to the tomb to weep there. 32 Now when Mary came to where Jesus was and saw him, she fell at his feet, saying to him, “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.” John 11:33-35 When Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who had come with her also weeping, he was deeply moved in his spirit and greatly troubled. 34 And he said, “Where have you laid him?” They said to him, “Lord, come and see.” 35 Jesus wept. John 11:36-37 So the Jews said, “See how he loved him!” 37 But some of them said, “Could not he who opened the eyes of the blind man also have kept this man from dying?” John 11:38-40 Then Jesus, deeply moved again, came to the tomb. It was a cave, and a stone lay against it. 39 Jesus said, “Take away the stone.” Martha, the sister of the dead man, said to him, “Lord, by this time there will be an odor, for he has been dead four days.” 40 Jesus said to her, “Did I not tell you that if you believed you would see the glory of God?” John 11:41-42 So they took away the stone. And Jesus lifted up his eyes and said, “Father, I thank you that you have heard me. 42 I knew that you always hear me, but I said this on account of the people standing around, that they may believe that you sent me.” John 11:43-44 When he had said these things, he cried out with a loud voice, “Lazarus, come out.” 44 The man who had died came out, his hands and feet bound with linen strips, and his face wrapped with a cloth. Jesus said to them, “Unbind him, and let him go.” · We face death differently. 1 Corinthians 15:20 But in fact Christ has been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep. 1 Corinthians 15:53-57 For this perishable body must put on the imperishable, and this mortal body must put on immortality. 54 When the perishable puts on the imperishable, and the mortal puts on immortality, then shall come to pass the saying that is written: “Death is swallowed up in victory.” 55 “O death, where is your victory? O death, where is your sting?” 56 The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. 57 But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. Philippians 1:21 For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain. · We grieve differently. 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18 But we do not want you to be uninformed, brothers, about those who are asleep, that you may not grieve as others do who have no hope. 14 For since we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so, through Jesus, God will bring with him those who have fallen asleep. 15 For this we declare to you by a word from the Lord, that we who are alive, who are left until the coming of the Lord, will not precede those who have fallen asleep. 16 For the Lord himself will descend from heaven with a cry of command, with the voice of an archangel, and with the sound of the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first. 17 Then we who are alive, who are left, will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air, and so we will always be with the Lord. 18 Therefore encourage one another with these words. · We live differently. Romans 6:4-11 We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life. 5 For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we shall certainly be united with him in a resurrection like his. 6 We know that our old self was crucified with him in order that the body of sin might be brought to nothing, so that we would no longer be enslaved to sin. 7 For one who has died has been set free from sin. 8 Now if we have died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him. 9 We know that Christ, being raised from the dead, will never die again; death no longer has dominion over him. 10 For the death he died he died to sin, once for all, but the life he lives he lives to God. 11 So you also must consider yourselves dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus. Jesus's presence in the Blessed Sacrament affords us a wonderful opportunity. Just as we spend time with friends and loved ones just to be with them, our mental prayer is an occasion of simply being present with Jesus. Jesus did this during his earthly life with various groups and individuals. They cherished these days and hours alone with their Friend, Lord, and Teacher. We can do the same in our prayer life.

Read OnlineJesus said to his disciples: “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and decay destroy, and thieves break in and steal. But store up treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor decay destroys, nor thieves break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there also will your heart be.” Matthew 6:19–21Today's Gospel is one that many find difficult to take literally. It is common for people to dream of wealth and material possessions. In an attempt to reconcile our Lord's teachings with their desires, they might justify the pursuit of riches by promising to be generous with the poor. But what is the ideal we should strive for? Jesus' exhortation is clear: The treasures of this world—money, possessions, power—are fleeting. They are subject to decay, theft, and loss. In contrast, spiritual treasures—virtues, good works, acts of charity, and growth in holiness—are eternal. Recall Luke's version of the Beatitudes, in which Jesus plainly states, “Blessed are you who are poor…” (Luke 6:20). Was Jesus speaking metaphorically, or does literal poverty bestow great blessedness? In Matthew's Gospel, Jesus is recorded slightly differently: “Blessed are the poor in spirit…” (Matthew 5:3). By adding “in spirit,” He emphasizes an interior disposition of detachment from worldly goods. He calls us to be free from the attachments that hinder our union with Him. However, we must be cautious not to assume that we can possess or desire great wealth and remain truly “poor in spirit.” While some are called to use material goods wisely, in accord with God's will, the Gospel ideal is a simplicity of life that fosters detachment from material security. One reason this teaching is difficult to embrace is that material comforts provide a false sense of security. We often find satisfaction in abundance, yet struggle to believe that a life of simplicity and detachment could bring even greater joy. Jesus does not call us to destitution but to a life free from excessive attachment to wealth, where our true security rests in God. Imagine winning an all-expenses-paid trip to the most luxurious resort in the world, offering unparalleled comfort and experiences. Such a prize would naturally seem desirable, even fulfilling. But Jesus' teaching today reminds us that no earthly luxury can compare to the eternal riches of Heaven. The question remains: where do we set our hearts? If we place our ultimate hope in worldly goods, our vision will be darkened, preventing us from seeing the greater good that awaits. But if we seek first the Kingdom of God, our hearts will be filled with His light, guiding us to treasures that will never fade. Though material things are not evil in themselves, Jesus desires that our hearts be properly ordered toward the greater good. He does not condemn wealth itself but warns against its dangers when it becomes an obstacle to spiritual growth. Recall that Jesus did not say it was impossible for the rich to enter His Kingdom, but that it was difficult (cf. Matthew 19:23–24; Mark 10:25). The challenge lies in the attachments wealth creates, fostering a false sense of security and self-sufficiency rather than reliance on God. For this reason, there is great wisdom in choosing the easier path—not only the path to Heaven but also the path to abundant riches in Heaven. That path is one of intentional simplicity, freely embracing a life detached from material excess, so that our desires are purified and freed from worldly temptations. This call to detachment is not only for those who are wealthy but also for those who have little, yet remain consumed by an insatiable longing for more.Reflect today on the profound spiritual truth that when we embrace simplicity—both outwardly and inwardly—we cultivate a deeper trust in God's providence and find our true wealth in His grace. Such spiritual wealth will remain with us for eternity. Choosing it is an act of divine wisdom, leading to eternal rewards beyond imagination, where neither moth nor decay can touch the treasures we store in Heaven. Lord of all riches, You bestow upon the poor and humble treasures beyond imagination. Please free me from inordinate desires for worldly wealth, and set my heart on the true riches of Heaven. Grant me the grace to be disciplined in my possessions and, even more so, in my heart, so that I may desire You and Your will above all else. Jesus, I trust in You.Image: The frosco Jesus the Pantokrator and Teacher among the angels in the church Basilica di Santa Eufemia by Luigi Cavenaghi via Adobe StockSource: Free RSS feed from catholic-daily-reflections.com — Copyright © 2026 My Catholic Life!
