We've got another interview from the Code Conference today. My friend and co-host, CNBC's Julia Boorstin, and I had a chance to talk with Rivian CEO RJ Scaringe. Rivian is a newer company — RJ started it in 2009, and it took more than 10 years to start shipping cars to consumers. But its first vehicle, the R1T pickup, made a big splash when it arrived in 2021, and the company has more back orders for both the R1T and its second vehicle, the R1S SUV, than it can handle. For now. We asked RJ about that production ramp and whether Rivian can meet demand, and whether it's just early adopters buying EVs or if they've finally gone mainstream. The conversation also touched on Rivian's deal with Amazon and the auto industry's push toward subscription features. And, of course, I had to ask Scaringe about the Cybertruck. How could I resist?! It's a beautiful Tuesday in the car biz as we talk about Dealers banding together to clarify EV credits. We also talk about Rivian and Tesla taking a few pages out of the old school automotive playbook. Show Notes with links:In an attempt to clarify EV battery sourcing guidelines, the National Automobile Dealers Association and the Alliance for Automotive Innovation are urging the U.S. Treasury to adjust its definition of "placed in service". They argue the current interpretation limits the effectiveness and application of the electric vehicle tax credit. The proposed changes aim to ensure EVs remain eligible for credits, even when they are manufactured in a different calendar year to delivery. The rules could affect EVs that meet battery content requirements for one year but are delivered to buyers in a year with increased requirements. In 2024, batteries manufactured by excluded entities, which could include companies controlled by China will be ineligibleIn 2025, those with ‘critical minerals' will also be made ineligibleIn a move that sounds awfully familiar to those of us in the retail auto industry, electric vehicle startup Rivian has launched an in-person shopping event as it directly invites buyers to its factory parking lot to browse, buy, and actually drive vehicles off the lot as it struggles through increased inventory. In what the company is calling the “Rivian Dealership” customers can browse several dozen trucks available for immediate purchaseThe vehicles on offer at Saturday's sale are the four-motor variants of the R1T pickup, equipped with its biggest battery pack, with starting prices at $87,000. Rivian has no plans to provide discounts at this event, and only trucks will be included, excluding the R1S SUV model that continues to have a waitlist, stated a Rivian spokeswoman.“They don't want to try the dealer path,” said Stephanie Brinley, the principal auto analyst at S&P Global Mobility. She continues: “They are getting to a point where demand isn't gone, but electric-vehicle makers are having to work harder for customers,” Brinley said. “You do have to sell vehicles, believe it or not.”In a move that appears much more like a traditional OEM, Tesla is providing an $8,000 discount on new Model S and Model X vehicles as well as three years of free Supercharging for deliveries made by the end of the quarter as it seeks to improve end-of-quarter financial outcomes by lowering inventory.Tesla has been known to offer special discounts or incentives for the delivery of new inventory vehicles by the end of the quarter. They recently offered three months of free Supercharging for Model 3 deliveries made by June end.The free charging could be worth several thousand dollars potentiallyThe $8000 discount on it's Model S and X are only available if delivery is taken by June 30thGet the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/ JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/ Read our most recent email at: https://www.asotu.com/media/push-back-email ASOTU Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/automotivestateoftheunion

Shares of Rivian Automotive fell today after the EV maker said late Friday that it is recalling more than 12,000 vehicles – nearly every EV it has made to date – to double-check that a fastener in the vehicles' steering assembly was properly tightened. After falling more than 10% , Rivian's stock ended the session down about 7%. The recall includes every Rivian R1T pickup and R1S SUV made through late September, as well as some of the EDV delivery vans the company produced for Amazon — 12,212 vehicles in all — though the company estimates that only about 1% of those have the defect. Through the end of September, Rivian had built about 15,300 vehicles since starting production in the fall of 2021. Stocks closed lower on Monday with the Nasdaq Composite index falling to the lowest level in two years as tech shares continue to be the hardest hit in this bear market because of spiking interest rates. The Nasdaq Composite closed 1.04% lower at 10,542.10, hitting its lowest close since July 2020, weighed down by a slump in semiconductor stocks such as Nvidia and AMD. The S&P 500 also fell 0.75% to 3,612.39 dragged down by semi stocks and dips in major tech names like Microsoft, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average shed 93.91 points, or 0.32%, to close at 29,202.88. Show #1524 Good morning, good afternoon, and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily, you trusted source of EV information. It's Thursday 7th July, it's Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to. RIVIAN SAYS IT'S ON TRACK TO DELIVER 25,000 VEHICLES THIS YEAR "Rivian said Wednesday the company produced 4,401 electric vehicles at its manufacturing facility in Normal, Illinois, and delivered 4,467 during the quarter ended June 30. In the first quarter of 2022, Rivian produced 2,553 vehicles and delivered 1,227. That includes a mix of the Rivian R1T pickup truck, R1S SUV and the EDV commercial electric vans it is making for Amazon. The automaker's top priority this summer is ramping up production at its Normal factory by introducing a second shift. It also plans to break ground on a $5 billion facility in Georgia, which awarded the automaker the state's largest-ever incentives package of $1.5 billion." Original Source: https://techcrunch.com/2022/07/06/rivian-says-its-on-track-to-deliver-25000-vehicles-this-year/ US: FORD EV SALES INCREASED 77% IN JUNE "Ford's all-electric vehicle sales increased quickly. In June, the company sold 4,353 BEVs, which is 77% more than a year ago and 3.0% of the total volume. The number includes 1,837 Ford F-150 Lightning electric pickups and 1,957 Ford Mustang Mach-E. We estimated that Ford E-Transit sales stand at 559 (based on the cumulative number and previous reports). According to Ford, going into July, both F-150 Lightning and Mach-E dealer stock is higher than in June, which heralds stronger July sales ahead. Noteworthy is also that over 70% of BEV sales are customers coming from other competitor brands. In the second quarter of 2022, Ford sold 15,527 all-electric vehicles (up 144% year-over-year), while so far this year sales almost reached 23,000 (up 77%)." Its Model Y and Model 3 were the best-selling electric vehicles in June in several countries. The more sales data we get, the more we learn about the success of the manufacturer's vehicles. It was recently revealed that Model Y became the best-selling car in Norway in June, where EVs took 78.7% of the market share. In addition, the vehicle became the best-selling electric car in Sweden. However, sales figures for all cars in the country, not just EVs, are now available, and Model Y's success appears to be far greater than only in the EV market." This was up 142% from May, when Tesla sold 32,165 China-made vehicles, and up 135% from a year ago. The plant is undergoing an upgrade to boost its output, which requires it to suspend most production in the first two weeks of July, according to a separate internal memo seen by Reuters. The factory's goal is to eventually produce 22,000 cars per week, the memo said." By the end of June 2022, China had 310 million vehicles, of which 10.1 million were NEVs, according to data released today by China's Ministry of Public Security. Of the 10.1 million NEVs, 8.1 million are pure electric vehicles, accounting for 80.93 percent of the total number of NEVs.In the first half of this year, a record 2.21 million NEVs were registered in China, the data show. This is an increase of 1.11 million vehicles, or 100.26 percent, compared to the first half of last year. The share of NEVs among all new registrations was 19.90 percent, meaning one in five car buyers bought a NEV, according to the data." Here's a quick recap of NIO Power Day 2022. The 500 kW fast chargers have peak currents of 650 amps – easily some of the most impressive power in the current industry and a clear response to competitors in China. In August of 2021, GAC Aion launched a 480 kW fast charger, which would have been more impressive if the company hadn't originally promised a 600 kW charger. Just last week, chairman and CEO of fellow EV automaker XPeng He Xiaopeng said the company would be gradually rolling out its own 480 kW/800V charging network later this year to support high-voltage charging on its upcoming G9 SUV." With the $250 reservation fee plus the $5,000 "pre-order deposit," prospective buyers have a place saved in line for the One launch edition—essentially the first-year version of the model, which is limited to 5,000 vehicles. What the company described to Green Car Reports is an order deposit, not a pre-order deposit. This is not an extra $5,000 refundable deposit, it explained, but an actual down payment on the vehicle. It's the beginning of a vehicle purchase process that will involve specific lenders and finance details soon. Fisker aims to deliver the Ocean One to the U.S., Canada, Austria, Denmark, Germany, Norway, and Sweden, all from November 2022 on, with the UK and France getting the launch version later next year." The electric crossovers have an updated exterior, in addition to rumored powertrain changes. The standard E-Tron and Sportback appear to have the same front-end styling. The revised grille has an intersecting hexagonal mesh pattern, versus the current look with a mix of vertical elements and narrow slats. A rumor from last year claims that the refreshed E-Tron and E-Tron Sportback have a new battery that increases their range. They'll allegedly be able to cover 373 miles (600 kilometers) on a charge in the WLTP standard. The EPA ratings currently are 222 miles for the E-Tron and 218 miles for the Sportback." The goal is for Norway to be an attractive host country for sustainable and profitable activity throughout the battery value chain, as well as attracting the large giga factories. During the press conference Vestre held at the battery factory Freyr in Mo i Rana, Northern Norway, he announced that Freyr's board has approved the construction of the giga factory at Mo. Additionally, consideration should be given to access for EV chargers “during times of emergency such as evacuation from natural disasters,” as stated in the proposed rule. Argonne National Laboratory, a research center of the U.S. Department of Energy, issued a report this spring on using mapping tools to prioritize EV charger benefits in underserved communities. The report says that analyzing sea level rise data, as well as flood and fire risk data, can help determine “where to deploy EV infrastructure, where to allocate resources, and which populations are most at risk" Original Source: https://www.smartcitiesdive.com/news/urban-flooding-presents-challenges-for-electric-vehicle-charging-stations/626567/ FRIDGE UNIT WILL OPERATE FROM ELECTRIC VEHICLE BATTERY "FRANCE: Carrier Transicold is to unveil Pulsor eCool, a refrigeration unit operating directly from the high voltage DC current generated by the batteries powering an electric light commercial vehicle. Carrier Transicold's original Pulsor system, released in 2012, was the first LCV unit to harness the electrification potential of the company's E-Drive technology. In a vehicle with an internal combustion engine, the legacy system requires a generator to run on electric power. Carrier says the new solution will deliver enhanced sustainability to customers choosing to operate a modern, electric urban delivery fleet." RIVIAN CHANGING BATTERY CELLS TO LFP, FOLLOWING TESLA, AND HIGH-NICKEL - Electric vehicle maker Rivian plans to use new types of battery cells in its electric trucks, delivery vans and SUVs the company said Thursday in a 2021 fourth-quarter shareholder letter. These include cells made with lithium iron phosphate (LFP) chemistry for its standard-level vehicles, and high-nickel chemistry for its longer-range vehicles. - LFP battery cells do not require any nickel or cobalt, which can be expensive or hard to obtain. They are also generally considered more stable, but less energy-dense, than nickel cobalt aluminum oxide cells, which had been used by Tesla and other automakers in electric vehicles. - Rivian founder and CEO RJ Scaringe explained on an earnings call after hours on Thursday that the company and its suppliers are facing a variety of constraints due to the Covid pandemic, Russia's invasion of Ukraine and their impacts on global supply chains. - Rivian Commercial Vehicles, such as the EDV-700 it developed for Amazon, should have “similar daily range capabilities with LFP chemistry, and this chemistry provides meaningful cost savings for us,” Rivian wrote in its shareholder letter. - the R1T pickup and R1S SUV, Rivian expects an estimated range of over 260 miles with the LFP-based standard battery pack. The company says it has delivered a total of 920 vehicles in 2021. - That number has increased since the start of new year. Rivian CEO RJ Scaringe said that as of March 8th, the company has made 2,425 vehicles since the start of production. - In a shareholder letter, the company said it expects to produce only 25,000 vehicle over the course of 2022, including its R1T truck and its electric delivery vans for Amazon. Without supply chain problems, the company said it would be able to make 50,000 vehicles. - Rivian said it brought in $55 million in revenue over the course of the year, almost all of which in the last three months. It recorded a net loss of $2.5 billion in the fourth quarter and a net loss of $4.5 billion for the year. - In the earnings call, Rivian said that it saw an “increased rate” of cancellations after the price increase was made public, but that “more than half” came back after the company reversed itself. The e-commerce giant is presently carrying a value of $15.6 billion on its books, according to company filings. - Unlike other carmakers that are starting to see light at the end of the tunnel in terms of the semiconductor crisis with supplies steadily improving over time, Rivian said it expects the exact opposite. Problems will actually become more acute as it tries to ramp up production into an ongoing shortage. Trump. - The return of one of California's most powerful environmental prerogatives could have a significant impact on the type of cars Americans will drive in the coming decade, the amount of gasoline the nation consumes and its ability to reduce the tailpipe emissions that contribute heavily to climate change. - Seventeen other states and the District of Columbia have adopted the California rules, turning them into de facto national standards. Twelve other states are following California's mandate to sell only zero-emissions vehicles after 2035. - California's leaders say they intend to write an auto pollution rule that will phase out the internal combustion engine and replace it with zero-emission batteries. - Transportation is the largest single source of greenhouse gases generated by the United States, representing 29 percent of the nation's total emissions.A recent report by the International Energy Agency found that nations would have to end the sale of new gasoline-powered cars by 2035 to keep average global temperatures from increasing 1.5 Celsius, compared with levels during the Industrial Revolution. We can see some outlines on the front and rear fascias, and everything looks like a match to the current model. The photos also include an interior shot of the prototype, and though we don't see the full greenhouse, what we do see is also a match to the current E-Tron Sportback. - Reports say that Audi will christen the updated E-Tron with a Q8 badge, thus giving it more symmetry with the rest of the lineup. The Q4 E-Tron is already out there, and the Q6 E-Tron is coming later this year. It certainly makes sense, and when a properly new model arrives in 2026, the Q8 E-Tron name will already have some history behind it. For reservations of the Tesla Model Y in particular, delivery estimates change from six months from today (September), to two months (May), simply by choosing the FSD add-on. - Model 3 customers currently only see a month's advantage on delivery times buying FSD vs. not. However, Model Y customers might be more motivated to add the FSD option if they have the money and don't want to wait until September to drive their new EV. By spending $12,000 more, the Model Y delivery window jumps up to May, just two months from now. Well good news, engineers in the UK have heard your prayers and fixed the Mustang by giving it electric power. - This magical new creation comes from a small engineering firm called Charge Cars. - the new EV uses an “official licensed” shell that the firm claims preserves the “classic design and styling of the legendary Ford Mustang.” - Charge Cars has fitted a 64 kWh battery pack and all-wheel-drive. This means the new electric Mustang has a range of 200 miles and will do zero to 60 in 3.9 seconds thanks to its 400kW of peak power. - All that electrical tech powering the car is thanks to Charge's partnership with EV manufacturer Arrival. - As well as “bespoke” leather seating and interior trim, the new Mustang also features a large screen in place of the center console. Instead of a cluster of gauges, Charge Cars has also added a second screen that shows your speed, range and state of charge. Charge Cars puts a starting price of £350,000 on the new EV, which is $460,000 Original Source : https://jalopnik.com/the-british-finally-came-in-and-fixed-the-mustang-1848628624 THIS IS GOGORO'S FIRST SOLID-STATE BATTERY: IT COULD BE AN EV GAME-CHANGER Original Source : https://www.slashgear.com/777070/ev-charging-explained-the-fastest-chargers-at-home-and-on-the-road/ DPD ORDERS ANOTHER 150 ESPRINTER Original Source : https://www.electrive.com/2022/03/09/dpd-orders-another-150-esprinter/ XPENG OPENS P5 RESERVATION BOOKS IN FOUR EUROPEAN MARKETS Original Source : https://insideevs.com/news/572707/xpeng-p5-european-reservation-open/ QUESTION OF THE WEEK WITH EMOBILITYNORWAY.COM Do you think rising fuel prices at the pumps will have a direct impact on EV sales? RIVIAN BACKTRACKS ON PRICE INCREASES FOR EXISTING RESERVATIONS - The strong reactions from Rivian reservation holders, especially early supporters, to the price hikes recently announced by the EV startup may be the reason why the company has just announced it has backtracked on price adjustments for existing reservations. - Rivian reassures customers that existing reservations made prior to the March 1 announcement will be honored at the original price. Furthermore, those who canceled their preorders on or after March 1 have the option to restore their original configuration. - "For anyone with a Rivian preorder as of the March 1 pricing announcement, your original configured price will be honored. If you canceled your preorder on or after March 1 and would like to reinstate it, we will restore your original configuration, pricing and delivery timing. Our team will be sending an email in the next few days with more details." - "As we worked to update pricing to reflect these cost increases, we wrongly decided to make these changes apply to all future deliveries, including pre-existing configured preorders. We failed to appreciate how you viewed your configuration as price locked, and we wrongly assumed the announced Dual-Motor and Standard battery pack would provide configurations that would deliver price points similar to your original configuration. While this was the logic, it was wrong and we broke your trust in Rivian." Original Source : https://insideevs.com/news/571222/rivian-backtracks-price-increases-existing-reservations/ RIVIAN BUYERS ARE CANCELING AT ALARMING RATES AFTER PRICE INCREASES - A poll shows that Rivian buyers are canceling their reservations at an alarming rate after significant price increases for the R1T electric pickup truck and R1S electric SUV. - Rivian announced significant price increases across its lineup that are resulting in some configurations going up by more than $12,000, and some by as much as $20,000 – these price increases also apply to people who had reservations for years, and they are not happy. - Forums and social media are full of Rivian reservation holders who are saying that they are canceling their orders because they are either don't want to pay the increase, or because they feel cheated by the company. - Out of over 3,000 respondents, the majority is canceling their orders with still a significant part of reservation holders being undecided. At the end of last year, Rivian disclosed having over 70,000 reservations for the R1T and R1S. - I am pretty sure that I'm going myself to cancel my reservation of four years. While I agree that it is a frustrating situation for reservation holders, it is likely the only way for Rivian to survive. · Original Source : https://electrek.co/2022/03/02/rivian-buyers-canceling-alarming-rate-after-price-increases/ FULLY LOADED RIVIAN R1S SUV SHOWS $106,515 PRICE ON CONFIGURATOR - Many reservation holders took to social media to complain about the cost of their orders jumping significantly—yes, the price increases apply to all existing orders. The only way to avoid them is to accept a downgrade from the 800+ hp four-motor powertrain and Large battery to the 600+ hp dual-motor setup with the new Standard battery pack expected to exceed 260 miles of range. There's a problem, though: these variants are not going to be delivered before 2024. - Starting with the exterior, we chose the Adventure Package starting at $78,000, the iconic Rivian Blue paint (a $2,500 option), and the 22-inch Sport Dark rims ($3,500). As for the interior, we chose the optional Ocean Coast interior theme, which costs $2,000. - We then selected the Quad-Motor AWD drive system, which is now a $6,000 option, and the Large battery pack, also priced at $6,000. - The estimated cost of this fiscally irresponsible experiment amounted to $106,515—or $1,639 a month for a 72-month lease contract. - Interestingly, that's pretty much the same price as the 2024 GMC Hummer EV SUV Edition 1, which starts at $105,595. Original Source : https://insideevs.com/news/570882/fully-loaded-rivian-r1s-costs-106515usd/ RIVIAN LAUNCHES 600-HP DUAL-MOTOR R1S AND R1T, RAISES QUAD-MOTOR PRICING - Rivian's fully electric R1S SUV and R1T pickup truck have always seemed like kind of a bargain. For $68,575 the R1T has 835 horsepower from a quad-motor setup, which provides mega capabilities both on- and off-road that best pretty much any other light-duty truck on the market, even ones that are much pricier. Today Rivian announced new entry-level dual-motor versions of both the R1S and R1T, which come alongside a serious price hike for the existing quad-motor models. - the dual-motor variants use new motors designed and built in-house by Rivian. The company says the new motors are among the most power-dense single-drive units on the market and they have fewer moving parts than the Bosch motors, making them lighter cheaper to build. The dual-motor trucks will make more than 600 hp and 600 pound-feet of torque and hit 60 mph in as little as 4 seconds, just 1 second off the quad-motor models. - Rivian says the Standard pack will give the dual-motor R1T a range of over 260 miles; with the Large pack the dual-motor models will do over 320 miles. For reference, the quad-motor R1T with the Large pack is rated by the EPA at 314 miles of range while the R1S will do 316 miles. The R1T-only Max pack, which is coming in 2023 for the quad-motor model and 2024 for the dual-motor, will offer over 400 miles for both motor setups. Small roll angles, high roll damping, and direct steering feel would add to that experience, all potentially paired with a two-motor system announced for the 5 that produces an all-wheel output of 872 horsepower. That straight line feel isn't the focus, though. - Polestar's last concept car was announced only as a preview of its new styling language ahead of the release of the still-unrevealed 3 and 4 SUVs. It became a product in its own right, even though that decision required a major investment on Polestar's part. Now that the 5 is already in development, the O2 could theoretically build on most of the same developments fairly easily. For now, though, this is just a concept of what a Polestar halo car can be. With an interior made from recycled polyester and a frame from recycled aluminum, the two-door EV is a hardtop convertible. It's also very much a concept car that likely won't ever be produced as envisioned. - It has a similar look to Polestar's first concept car, the Precept, but this idea is sleeker and undeniably sexier as a sports car. - Adding to the Swedish car's intrigue is an autonomous drone that launches from the back of the car. The quadcopter ejects from behind the back seats and captures footage of the car going up to 56 mph. Once parked you can view and even edit the footage on the car's 15-inch front touchscreen. RIVIAN PLANS ON DELIVERING 1,000 R1T MODELS BY THE END OF 2021 - Only last week it had been revealed that Rivian's production was going at a snail's pace with it just managing to manufacture two cars per day on an average. But now it is slowly ramping up. As of the end of October, it has produced 180 R1T electric pickup trucks and delivered 156 of them. - Rivian says that production ramp-up will happen in December. By the end of this year, it wants to make a total of 1,135 vehicles. - It wants to make 1,200 R1T models, while it will slowly start production of the R1S SUV and make 25 units of it as well. On top of this, it will even manufacture 10 units of an electric delivery van it has to make for Amazon. Overall, the plan is to deliver 1,000 R1T models, 15 R1S models,s and all 10 EDV's it makes for Amazon in December itself. - Rivian believes it will have a backlog of orders all the way into 2023 and so far, it seems like production of the current orders alone will take two years to complete. Rivian however also notes that it has the capacity to make 150,000 vehicles annually but this level will be reached only in 2024. After updates, its plant will also be able to handle up to 200,000 vehicles. The other laggards were Madrid, at only 0.15% of miles, Berlin at 0.55% and Paris at 1%. - On Wednesday it announced that London Uber drivers could put money raised via the app's clean air fee towards buying Tesla electric cars, adding to similar programmes giving discounts on Nissan, Kia and Hyundai electric cars. The electrified GV70 will be produced at Hyundai's Alabama plant, and will mark the first EV manufactured in the US by the Korean automotive umbrella. With this decision, Hyundai looks to make a larger impact on the growing EV market in the US, and take advantage proposed subsidies for electric vehicles produced on US soil. - According to a report from Business Korea, Hyundai Motor shared its decision to begin US manufacturing with its labor union during a job security committee meeting at its Asan plant in South Korea. - The company is planning to begin manufacturing early next year at its US facility in Montgomery, Alabama. This plant currently manufacturers several different ICE Hyundai models, as well as various combustion engines, but will now shift toward EV manufacturing beginning with the GV70 EV. Each 10 x 22-foot rectangle holds 20 battery packs that once powered Nissan Leafs. But they've lost some of their juice. Inside a car, they can no longer power speedy accelerations, and their 85-mile ranges have been reduced to about 55 miles. - But the batteries still work. Research suggests they may retain two-thirds or more of their original capacity. So for the past 18 months, these batteries have been living a second act: storing energy from nearby rows of solar panels. Their owner, B2U Storage Solutions, wants to know how effectively, and for how long, they can do that. - By 2030, retired EV batteries could provide 200 gigawatt-hours of energy storage globally each year, according to analysis from the consulting firm McKinsey—roughly 50 times the annual output of the Hoover Dam. B2U wants to be a part of that. - One question: Who owns the reused batteries, and who's responsible if something goes wrong? Automakers know they may be blamed if one of their old batteries is involved in a fire. - B2U's Lancaster project looks promising. The company says its solar panels generate up to 1.65 megawatts of power, while its retired Nissan Leaf batteries can retain 10 megawatt-hours of storage—about as much as the average US home uses in a year. Freeman says the company is profitable, and planning expansions. The certainty and consistency that this advancement provides could also improve residual values of vehicles, lowering leasing costs and further benefitting both consumers and global automotive manufacturers utilizing the technology. - StoreDot is now making rapid advancements in extreme fast charging lithium-ion batteries for use in the automotive sector, increasing the number of miles per minute of charge. It's a suitcase-sized battery pack that weighs in at about 50 pounds. With a 4 kWh capacity, it can charge an EV at 7.2 kW. A single charge can add 12 to 20 miles of range, depending on the EV. - Not only could drivers keep a ZipCharge Go in their trunk, it's possible for hotels or service stations to have units available in case a car needs a bit more charge to make it home. - Powering the Go are high-energy-density lithium-nickel-manganese-cobalt-oxide (NMC) battery cells. - has a bi-directional AC-DC inverter, which enables charging from the grid to the Go and from the Go to the grid. Yes, the Go can actually store energy during off-peak hours and sell energy back to the grid. TESLA SOLD 241,300 CARS IN THE THIRD QUARTER "Tesla has bucked the wider trend of declining sales brought on by the global chip shortage in the third quarter this year, as it sold 241,300 cars — a total of 102,000 more vehicles than the same quarter last year. It's the most Tesla has ever sold in a quarter (and for some added perspective, the company sold 367,500 in all of 2019)." reports The Verge: "The company managed to deliver more vehicles once again despite the fact that major automakers saw huge drops this past quarter. General Motors, the largest automaker in the US, said Friday morning that it only sold 446,997 vehicles in the third quarter — a 33 percent drop from the same period last year." A poll of analysts showed that industry watchers were expecting 222,700 vehicle deliveries from Tesla in Q3 2021 on average. Therefore, Tesla significantly beat those expectations." says electrek: "Finally, Tesla also shows a significant ramp-up of Model S production with almost 9,000 units compared to just 2,340 units the previous quarter when it only just started production of the new version of its flagship electric sedan. Tesla is expected to add new Model X production to the mix during this quarter." Read more: https://electrek.co/2021/10/02/tesla-tsla-q3-2021-deliveries/ "Tesla put customers through repeated, unexpected delivery delays during the quarter. In their release on Saturday, the company acknowledged the delays, blaming them on “global supply chain and logistics challenges,” then thanked customers for their patience." reports CNBC who, at times, will look for a counter point to the euphoria often around Tesla: "The press release announcing the production and deliveries report was dated Austin, Texas. Tesla's web site still lists its headquarters as being in Palo Alto, Calif., but Elon Musk moved to Texas last year and the company is building a new factory in the Austin area. Tesla is also planning to host its annual shareholder meeting at its plant, now under construction, near Austin on October 7. During the period ending September 30, 2021, Tesla began to ship some lithium iron phosphate batteries from China to be used in Model 3 vehicles made for customers in the U.S" https://www.cnbc.com/2021/10/02/tesla-tsla-q3-2021-vehicle-delivery-numbers.html According to Yahoo! News: "So far this year, Tesla has sold around 627,300 vehicles. That puts it on pace to soundly beat last year's total of 499,550. Wedbush analyst Daniel Ives wrote in a note to investors that the pace of electric vehicle deliveries in the U.S. and China has been strong for the past month or so. That means an “eye-popping growth trajectory heading into 4Q and 2022 for (CEO Elon) Musk & Co.” Still, Ives estimated that the chip shortage will knock 40,000 vehicles from Tesla's annual delivery number. He estimates the deliveries to be at least 865,000 vehicles, with a bull case of around 900,000." "So how did Tesla manage to avoid what's crushing the rest of the car industry? According to Barron's, it might have to do with the company's simplified supply chain. “Chinese-based production seems to have helped Tesla,” Barron's observes, also mentioning that the chip shortage has released its grip on China this September, “But the chip shortage seems to be hitting different automakers at different times as chip-makers truggle to fill orders. Timing is the final potential reason [for Tesla's success]." says Inverse.com: "Regardless of why Tesla managed to dunk on expectations, Musk took to Twitter to celebrate his Tesla team, writing a special thanks to Tesla's “suppliers and logistics partners for coming through despite great difficulties.”" Read more: https://www.inverse.com/innovation/teslas-q3-production-numbers-2021 *Ad Break* RIVIAN IPO DETAILS Automotive News said: "The company's IPO plans come as EV makers are scaling up, angling for a bigger slice of the growing market. Rivian's IPO Filing Reveals Lots Of Juicy Details, Like Losing $1B In 6 Months "Last week, the company filed an Initial Public Offering with the US Securities and Exchange Commission with a placeholder price of $100 million, though this number will change when terms of the share sale are set. Meanwhile, Automotive News reports, 48,390 customers have already put down a refundable deposit of $1,000 for either the R1T and R1S electric models of the brand. And that's about the good part of the picture." says Motor1.com :"The filing also reveals that the Amazon-backed manufacturer lost $994 million during the first six months of the year. For comparison, in the same period last year, Rivian registered a deficit of $377 million, the filing also reveals. As of June 30, the company had approximately $3.7 billion in cash and other cash equivalents to finance its operations. It's currently generating very small revenues from selling products." Read more: https://www.motor1.com/news/538194/rivian-ipo-filing-financial-details/ "The filing — one of the most anticipated of the year — shows a company burning through cash as it takes on the mammoth effort of designing, developing, producing and then selling electric vehicles. The S-1, the document where companies disclose financial data, risks and opportunities, also provides insight into its expansion, relationship with Amazon and spending projections." writes TechCrunch: "Rivian reported a net loss of $426 million in 2019. Those losses more than doubled to $1 billion as the company built out its factory in Normal, Illinois, prepared to begin producing its R1T pickup truck and R1S SUV and expanded its workforce. Its S-1 states that it employed 6,274 people as of June 30. However, the company recently told TechCrunch it employs more than 8,000 people across several facilities in Arizona, California, Michigan, Illinois, Vancouver, Canada and the UK. The company spent $766 million on R&D in 2020. In the first half of 2021 the company spent $683 million on R&D. Those costs are projected to grow. Rivian said it expects cumulative spending on capital expenditures to be about $8 billion through the end of 2023 as it invests in and builds out infrastructure, including additional manufacturing capacity, battery cell production, service operations, charging networks, retail and software development." That includes one instance this summer where Tesla defectors were “caught red-handed” stealing the core technology for its next-generation batteries, “the most essential element for any electric vehicle,” according to a court filing last month." They add: "A California state court judge in San Jose allowed Tesla last week to add its new allegations to the pending case, along with three more of its former employees as defendants. Rivian had objected, arguing the claims are unsupported by the facts and that dramatically expanding the scope of the litigation will delay resolving it. Rivian already lost its initial request for dismissal of Tesla's claims back in March. Rivian says Tesla dragged its feet since initially filing suit in July 2020 and hasn't sufficiently specified the trade secrets it claimed " https://www.bnnbloomberg.ca/tesla-amps-up-rivian-poaching-fight-cites-battery-secrets-theft-1.1661142 NEW QUESTION OF THE WEEK WITH EMOBILITYNORWAY.COM If you have gone back to fossil cars, or play along, imagine you HAD decided to switch back from EV to combustion, what's the reason? TESLA DOESN’T HAVE SPY CAMERAS JUST CAMERAS CAPABLE OF SPYING "Friend of Jalopnik John Voelcker points out on Twitter that America is basically a free-for-all when it comes to new-era car tech, in comparison to China, which is dropping the hammer on Tesla’s in-car cameras." says Jalopnik reoirting Reuters: "Cameras in Tesla cars are not activated outside of North America, the U.S. automaker said on its Chinese social media page on Wednesday, seeking to assuage security concerns in the world’s biggest car market. Tesla faces scrutiny in China where the military in March banned Tesla cars from entering its complexes, citing security concerns over cameras in its vehicles, sources told Reuters." "Models 3 and Y are equipped with a camera in the cabin, which is located above the rearview mirror and is disabled by default. Tesla owners in North America can activate it to shoot a short video clip in the event of an accident or an advanced emergency braking (AEB) event. The first one will be launched in 2023, once the company completes the $1 billion investment to modernize the vehicle assembly facility in Cologne." says InsideEVs: "We guess that this new electric model might look different than the Ford Mustang Mach-E and introduce a new design language for Ford, at least in Europe. We would not expect significant differences in range, charging or performance of Ford cars, compared to Volkswagen's cars. The battery options might be basically the same (48/62/82 kWh; 45/58/77 kWh usable). The drive options are single motor rear-wheel drive or dual motor all-wheel drive. And DC fast charging is up to 125 kW (82 kWh pack) or up to 100 kW (62 kWh pack)." https://insideevs.com/news/500498/first-meb-ford-small-suv/?utm_source=RSS&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=RSS-all-articles MAGNA TO BUILD MODULAR ELECTRIC VEHICLES WITH REE AUTOMOTIVE REE Automotive announced a strategic collaboration agreement with Magna International with the goal of bringing to market innovative, full-fledged Modular Electric Vehicles (MEVs) for tech companies and new electric mobility players under the ‘Powered by REE’ brand. The strategic partnership explores a combination of the advanced REEcorner technology and the world-class manufacturing capabilities of Magna’s vehicle integration system expertise to help business customers build MEVs which allow them to customize vehicles according to their requirements and branding while speeding up time to the market. REE and Magna will also explore potential collaboration in global mobility through the creation of a “Mobility-as-a- Service” (MaaS) venture in the Light Commercial Vehicle (LCV) sector that leverages REE’s proprietary X-by-Wire REEcorner and EV platform technology as well as Magna’s industrial footprint and capabilities. RIVIAN R1T SPOTTED WITH LIDAR RIG "Another Rivian R1T electric pickup truck was spotted with a LiDAR rig on Page Mill Road in Palo Alto. After Rivian released more details about its R1T and R1S vehicles in November, questions emerged about Driver+, its driver-assist system." says teslrati: "Some people noticed that in Rivian’s November update, there was no mention of LiDAR sensors for Driver+. In 2018, Teslarati attended Rivian’s unveiling event for the R1T pickup truck and the R1S SUV. At the event, Rivian noted that two LiDAR sensors were placed below the R1T truck and R1S SUV’s “Stadium” headlights. Recently, Rivian told Teslarati that its Driver+ system utilizes 10 exterior cameras, 1 interior camera, 4 corner radar sensors, 1 forward-facing radar sensor, and 12 ultrasonic sensors for a 360-degree field of vision." https://www.teslarati.com/rivian-r1t-lidar-sensor/ YAMAHA DEVELOPS COMPACT 350 KW MOTOR FOR EVS "Yamaha Motors has just unveiled a new oil-cooled electric motor combined with inverter and reduction gearbox with claimed industry-leading power density. Despite Yamaha Motors being better known for its motorcycle development, the company has played an increasingly prominent role in the development of motors for both electric motorcycles and electric cars." writes electrek: "The company’s latest innovation is a 350 kW (469 hp) electric drivetrain. That’s enough to be more powerful than 95% of all cars and trucks on the road already. Instead of developing the components of the drivetrain separately, Yamaha integrated the mechanical and electrical components into one unit. The motor, gearbox, and electronic speed controller are all housed in the same assembly, resulting in Yamaha reaching what it calls “the industry’s highest class in output density.” Unlike gas-powered vehicles, electric vehicles can easily incorporate two or more motors into their drivetrains, easily boosting overall power output. Just two of these new Yamaha motors would provide an electric hypercar with 700 kW (938 hp) of power" https://electrek.co/2021/04/13/yamaha-develops-350-kw-motor-for-electric-hypercars-demonstrates-1400-kw-application/ LOTUS: ‘FORGET HYBRID, WE’RE GOING STRAIGHT TO ELECTRIC’ "Lotus is going all-in on pure electric cars, as part of a £100m-plus investment in its Hethel headquarters and engineering capabilities. In his first interview, Lotus Cars managing director Matt Windle reveals" says Phil McNamara at CAR magazine: "Matt Windle has been managing director since January 2021. Windle is no stranger to EVs: he worked at Tesla for seven years, getting the first Roadster into production at Hethel. Lotus has already shown the first car of the Vision80 plan, the Evija, a carbonfibre-monocoque-based pure-electric hypercar. Its four motors are claimed to produce a combined 2000PS (1973bhp), which would make it the most powerful road car in history. The price tag? £2m a pop. While the Evija is limited to 130 units (as befits its 130 type number), the next car – currently referred to as Type 131 – will be the first series-production model of the new era." https://www.carmagazine.co.uk/electric/lotus/ VOLKSWAGEN ID.4 EV COMPLETES ITS CROSS-COUNTRY ROAD DRIVE Volkswagen of America completed a drive across the country with the all-electric Volkswagen ID.4. RIVIAN TO INSTALL MORE THAN 10,000 EV CHARGERS BY END OF 2023 "Rivian, the EV startup backed by Amazon, Cox Automotive and T. Rowe Price, plans to install more than 10,000 chargers by the end of 2023. The network will have a dual purpose: quickly power its electric vehicle models with fast chargers installed along highways and provide Level 2 chargers at further afield locations next to parks, trailheads and other adventurous destinations." says TechCrunch: "The company said Thursday that its so-called Rivian Adventure Network will include more than 3,500 DC fast chargers at over 600 sites, which will only be accessible to owners of its electric vehicles." "While Adventure Network of chargers will be solely for Rivian owners, the company also plans a second network of stations dubbed Waypoints, which will be available to other EV drivers. These will number over 10,000 and will be installed through 2023. The first batch will go to Colorado's 42 state parks, each getting two Waypoints each. " according to Autoweek: "The Waypoints will feature only the J1772 plugs and offer a charging speed of 11.5 kW, so these won't be as quick as the DC fast chargers. Rivian's two-tier plan of charging networks represent a serious step for the company, just months ahead of the market launch of its first two vehicles, and unlike Tesla's network, only a part of it will be exclusive to Rivian owners." "Rivian owners will need to do is pull up and plug in. No membership cards or anything like that. The first stations will support 200 kilowatts of juice to start, but Rivian plans to amp things up with 300 kW and beyond after 2023. " reports CNET: "R1T pickup and R1S SUV owners will fill their battery packs with 140 miles of range in just 20 minutes, the company promised. Like the Adventure Network, Rivian owners will be able to charge their cars automatically by simply pulling up and plugging in. The public will need to jump through a couple of hoops, comparatively, though the company didn't go into detail about the process." Let's say they started installing on April 1st - no joke. That's 33 months. To install 3,500 DC chargers at 600 sites. That's 18 sites a month, from today. Working days? That's a site A DAY. Is it going to happen? You decide. https://techcrunch.com/2021/03/18/rivian-to-install-more-than-10000-ev-chargers-by-end-of-2023/ https://www.autoweek.com/news/green-cars/a35885831/rivian-adventure-network/ https://www.cnet.com/roadshow/news/rivian-ev-charging-network-tesla-superchargers/ UK FURTHER CUTS DOWN EV SUBSIDIES "The Plug-in Car Grant for pure electric cars has been reduced from £3,000 to £2,500, with the list price cap also reduced from £50,000 to £35,000. The changes are effective immediately from today (18 March 2021)." reports Ricahrd Aucock at Motoring Research: "These measures have been taken to ensure the funding lasts longer, says the government. The £50,000 price cap has been lowered to £35,000 because higher-priced vehicles are ‘typically bought by drivers who can afford to switch without a subsidy from taxpayers’. Cars now excluded include the Tesla Model 3, as driven by transport secretary Grant Shapps. Several times last year, the Model 3 was Britain’s best-selling car in the monthly registration rankings." SMMT chief executive Mike Hawes said: "“New battery electric technology is more expensive than conventional engines and incentives are essential in making these vehicles affordable to the customer. Cutting the grant and eligibility moves the UK even further behind other markets, which are increasing their support, making it yet more difficult for the UK to get sufficient supply. This sends the wrong message to the consumer, especially private customers, and to an industry challenged to meet the government’s ambition to be a world leader in the transition to zero emission mobility.”" Ford of Britain Chairman Graham Hoare: “disappointing and is not conducive to supporting the zero emissions future we all desire.” The British government states that the number of available electric car models with a price below 35,000 pounds has increased by almost 50 per cent since 2019. So, the MGZS EV. Just one of the Hyundai Kona models, the bottom spec small battery version. No Tesla. Only the bottom spec VW ID.3 Pro with 263 mile range. Vans are harder hit. @SteveFowler, Editor in Chief of AutoExpress: "Government kicks car industry and car buyers squarely in the guts. Slashes plug-in grant and lowers limit. LUDICROUS. So angry. Thought it was April 1. Bad, bad move." I tweeted: "Anyone fancy buying a @Tesla in the next 12 days? They'll cover the £2500 car grant which no longer applies as they're all over £35k RRP" Heres an example of a family car caught out by the overnight change. Due out in 2022, the crossover will share its underpinnings with the next Porsche Macan." according to Autoblog "Audi will position the Q6 E-Tron as electric alternative to the Q5. Don't let the common bones (and some of the inaccurate reports floating around the web) fool you: the Q6 E-Tron will not be merely a re-badged Macan. It will ride on the Premium Platform Electric (PPE) architecture that Audi and Porsche co-developed to underpin a range of relatively big luxury EVs. KIA UNVEILS THE EV6, ITS FIRST DEDICATED EV "Kia has revealed the first official images of the EV6 – its first dedicated Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV) built on the company’s new EV platform: the Electric-Global Modular Platform, or E-GMP. The EV6 is also the first of Kia’s next-generation BEVs to be developed under a new design philosophy that embodies Kia’s shifting focus towards electrification." says Next Green Car: "Kia has not yet provided any technical data on the EV6 with the revealing of the name and the sketch of the design. However, the Ioniq 5 should provide some good clues here, since it is based on the same platform. This basis will give Kia the scope for batteries with 58 or 73 kWh, powertrains between 125 and 225 kW. The technical details of the electric Kia might differ slightly, but the Kia EV6 should also have the fast-charging capability of up to 220 kW and the impressive charging curve of the Ioniq 5." https://www.nextgreencar.com/news/9106/kia-unveils-the-ev6-its-first-dedicated-ev/ DACIA SPRING EV NOW AVAILABLE TO ORDER, PRICED FROM €12,403 Dacia is opening a new chapter in its history with the launch of all-new Spring, the brand’s first 100% electric car. In addition to requests from North America, Europeans also expressed a strong desire to become beta testers. Musk wrote that Tesla will ask regulators in order to make possible the proliferation of FSD Beta in Europe." reports Tesmanian: "Also, in response to a request from a Tesla owner from Europe, Musk replied that the company would ask the regional regulators to authorize the use of FSD Beta there. If this approval is granted, it will become an additional stage in the development of FSD. The fact is that the layouts of cities in the United States and Europe are significantly different. Europe is characterized by compact cities with many narrow streets saturated with dense traffic." https://www.tesmanian.com/blogs/tesmanian-blog/tesla-will-request-regulators-to-release-fsd-beta-in-europe-says-elon-musk TESLA’S COST PER KWH FOR CELLS FROM SUPPLIERS REVEALED "Tesla sources many of its battery cells from third-party suppliers, like Panasonic, LG Chem, and CATL. Because of the massive rate at which Tesla buys these cells, it is paying significantly less per kilowatt-hour compared to its competitors, according to a new report from Cairn Energy Research Advisors" says Teslarati: "According to Cairn’s research, Tesla pays an average of $142 per kWh for cells purchased from its three previously mentioned suppliers. Meanwhile, companies like GM are paying $169 per kWh, while the industry average runs around $186, according to the firm’s report. Furthermore, Tesla’s packs cost $187 per kWh on average, with GM’s costing $207 per kWh and the industry average being $246 per kWh." https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-battery-cells-cost-per-kwh-revealed-gm-competitors-cairn-report/ BP PULSE INVESTS £2 MILLION TO UPGRADE LEGACY CHARGE POINTS "In the UK, bp pulse is pledging to improve the reliability of the UK’s older public charging infrastructure by working with local authorities to upgrade and replace charge points across the country." reports Electrive: "The BP subsidiary – that was given the new name bp pulse incorporating bp Chargemaster and Polar in 2020 – has already agreed to invest over £400,000 in infrastructure for replacing more than 50 charge points. These are mostly owned by local authorities and originally installed over a decade ago with government grant funding under the Plugged in Places scheme. Beyond the upgrading of initial 50 charge points, discussions are already underway to make an additional £750,000 available for legacy charge point owners, which could see over 300 units upgraded. In total, bp pulse has made £2 million available for the endeavour." https://www.electrive.com/2021/03/09/bp-pulse-invests-2-million-to-upgrade-legacy-charge-points/ RIVIAN CEO SHARES HOW ROOMY THE BACK OF THE R1S WILL BE "Rivian’s CEO RJ Scaringe Tweeted a video of himself surrounded by R1S electric SUVs. In the video, he explains how the second and third-row seats fold down and shares perspective of how much room future drivers will actually have." says Electrek: "In a recent Tweet, Rivian CEO RJ Scaringe offers fans of the automaker a glimpse at a posse of R1S SUVs. The video features eight different R1S’ lined up in various colors. Scaringe speaks about how he has been driving the R1S the past couple weeks and has been loving it. He talks about loading up his kids and gear, and even posted along with the video, “Ready for camping!” This certainly fits the theme of outdoor, all-terrain situations the high-performance EV is geared specifically toward. Scaringe admits many people have been curious about how the second and third rows fold flat in the R1S, so he decided to share a demonstration. With the tailgate down, the seats lay seamlessly flat from the second-row headrests, out the EV’s rear." https://electrek.co/2021/03/10/rivian-ceo-shares-how-roomy-the-back-of-the-r1s-will-be/ HYUNDAI ANNOUNCES NEW KONA ELECTRIC PRICES ""The refreshed Hyundai Kona Electric is now on sale, with prices inclusive of the £3,000 government plug-in car grant starting from £30,125. The all-electric SUV has been given a visual refresh, with more technology introduced across the range too" says CarWow: "Opt for a range-topping Ultimate spec, and that rises to £40,375. All cars get a 10.25-inch digital driver’s display and equally-sized infotainment system as standard, along with rear parking sensors and a reversing camera. Adaptive cruise control and keyless entr.y. Upgrade to the 64kWh and that’s paired to a 150kw, 204hp motor. That boosts range up to 300 miles as well. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to. Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too. BMW I7 ELECTRIC SEDAN COMING WITH AROUND 650 HORSEPOWER "Spy photos have shown the BMW i7 electric sedan undergoing extensive testing. The camouflage and cladding have hidden a model that’s expected to resemble its gas-powered sibling, though surprises aren’t expected. However, one area BMW could excite is with the i7’s output. The company has yet to make anything official – and likely won’t until the reveal – though a new Autobild report says the sedan could offer 650 horsepower (484 kilowatts)." according to Motor1: "The report also notes that the German automaker will offer a 120-kilowatt-hour battery that’ll give the sedan a range of 700 kilometers (434 miles). Also in the report is the mention of a less-powerful variant with a smaller 80 kWh battery. The automaker isn’t expected to reveal the new vehicle until sometime next year, as it’ll arrive for the 2023 model year. It’ll compete against the Mercedes EQS, which rumors suggest could receive a high-performance AMG version, too, which would help justify a 650-hp i7 in BMW’s stable. The BMW is also likely to receive a bevy of safety features and semi-self-driving technologies." https://www.motor1.com/news/485707/bmw-i7-650-horsepower-rumors/ FORD MUSTANG MACH-E U.S. SALES AND PRODUCTION NUMBERS UP IN JANUARY "Ford announced its U.S. production and sales results for the month of January, and as we can see, the ramp-up of the Mustang Mach-E progresses. The company delivered to customers 238 Mach-E, which combined with the first three in December, gives us a total of 241. We can guess that February, or at least March, will be in four digits." according to InsideEVs: "On the production front, the volume is an order of magnitude higher. In January alone, Ford produced 4,250 Mach-E. The cumulative production is at 10,967, but we must take into account that part of it is envisioned for other markets. An important piece of information is also that the number of cars delivered to dealers increased to roughly 5,000." https://insideevs.com/news/485684/ford-mustang-mache-sales-production-january-2021 RIVIAN'S AMAZON DELIVERY VANS HAVE STARTED MAKING DELIVERIES "Rivian has begun production of its R1S SUV, but the first vehicles to actually make it to the road and be used for their intended purpose are the delivery vans that the EV startup has built for global retail giant Amazon. Amazon has officially begun delivering your orders with these electric vans, ushering in a new age of electric mobility and changing the way that commercial vehicles impact the environment." reports CArBuzz: "These vans will be a common sight on our roads soon, since Amazon has ordered 100,000 of them. Series production of the vehicle will only start sometime next year, and we don't know exactly how many of the 100,000 units Amazon is already making use of, but at this point, it's probably just a handful. For now, the electrified deliveries have started in Los Angeles, but over the course of the year, an additional 15 cities will see the introduction of the new vehicles." https://carbuzz.com/news/rivians-amazon-delivery-vans-have-started-making-deliveries TESLA’S SUPERCHARGER PRODUCTION FACILITY IN SHANGHAI GOES ONLINE "Tesla’s Shanghai Supercharger production plant has gone online, the company announced today. Tesla announced that it would begin producing Superchargers in Shanghai at a dedicated plant on November 5th, 2020, with the intention of widening the availability of its charging infrastructure in the country." says Teslarati: "In just over two months since the announcement, the plant is online and producing Tesla-specific charging stalls. Tesla did state that the project was officially erected in August 2020, making it just over five months that the project was completed from start to finish." TEsla said:" Today, with the strong support of Shanghai governments at all levels and Tesla’s rapid advancement, the Tesla Shanghai Supercharging Pile Factory was officially completed and put into production, representing the industry’s leading third-generation Supercharging pile (V3) was officially off the assembly line” https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-shanghai-supercharger-facility-goes-online/ TESLA UPDATES MODEL Y TIMELINE IN EUROPE "Tesla has updated its Model Y delivery timeline in Europe – hinting that Gigafactory Berlin will start production in “mid-2021.” says electrek: "That’s updated from just “2021,” and it would indicate a start of production in just a few months at Gigafactory Berlin." "In October last year CEO Elon Musk revealed the Model Y produced at Giga Berlin will be the first to have the integrated battery packs featuring the new 4680 cells. The integrated battery pack would also mean the introduction of single-piece front and rear castings for the electric SUV." ntes Drive TEsla Canada: "That is a lot of new technology to introduce and ramp up in such a short amount of time. Since the targeted date is only about five months away, Tesla could also be planning to import Model Y’s produced at Giga Shanghai. It wouldn’t be the first time it has done something like that as the automaker began exporting Model 3’s to Europe last year." https://driveteslacanada.ca/model-y/tesla-updates-model-y-design-studio-in-europe-targeting-mid-2021-production/ GENESIS GV70E ELECTRIC CROSSOVER SPIED TESTING FOR THE FIRST TIME "It’s only been a couple of days since a report broke previewing a legion of Genesis EVs to come, but one of our spy shooters has already captured one of those vehicles: the GV70e. Basically, this vehicle is an all-electric version of the GV70 crossover that’s already been revealed." says Autoblog: "A number of visual elements give this tester away as the electric GV70. For starters, there’s the solid grille. The heavy camouflage blocks off a grille that is shaped similarly to the normal GV70, but it’s just a big shield in this case. You can see that a tiny slit was cut in the center for what looks like a camera. This EV seems a good fit for the recently-announced E-GMP electric vehicle platform that will underpin a number of electric Hyundai products. The even-smaller electric Genesis crossover we spied the other day (and many others) will also take advantage of the platform. It’s still unclear when the GV70e will debut, but Hyundai has promised to launch 23 electric vehicles by 2025." https://www.autoblog.com/2021/02/03/genesis-gv70e-spied-testing/ LEGISLATION WORKS "With 2020 seeing emission regulations tighten, manufacturers scrambled to meet EU (and Swiss) standards at the close of 2020, contributing to total plug-in registrations exceeding half a million units in the final quarter of the year. 2020 lived up to its claim of being the first genuine year where EVs moved from the slow hanging fruit lane to the mainstream, narrowly failing to miss a pre-COVID forecast of 770,000 units." says electrive: "Thanks to the newly phased-in EU fleet average CO2 targets, European volumes more than doubled last year from previous levels to 727,927 units of fully electric vehicles. PHEVs – a critical strategic tool in meeting the latest fleet average CO2 targets – saw volumes achieve 606,466 units. Combining both plug-in segments, West European sales surpass Chinese new plug-in passenger car registrations last year by 90,000 units to become the world’s largest region for externally rechargeable passenger cars. The start of production from Tesla’s European facility this year is likely to double regional Tesla volumes. Simultaneously, Volkswagen Group’s MEB ramp-up is expected to increase with an annual capacity of 330,000 units expected at the end of 2021. However, full annual capacity is not likely until 2022." https://www.electrive.com/2021/02/02/legislation-works-european-electric-car-market-full-year-2020-round-up/ NEW QUESTION OF THE WEEK Have you seen the social media meme of putting two photo’s side by side and titling them ‘how to started’ and ‘how it’s going’. LG CHEM BATTERIES FOR CHINESE MODEL Y "South Korea’s LG Chem Ltd. will supply batteries to US electric vehicle giant Tesla Inc. for its latest mid-size SUV Model Y, to be manufactured in China next year. LG Chem, the world’s largest EV battery maker, has been chosen as the sole supplier for the luxury SUV model, beating strong contenders such as China’s Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. (CATL) and Japan’s Panasonic Corp., according to industry sources on Nov. 20." says The Korea Economic Daily: "Under the latest deal, LG Chem will supply advanced lithium-ion batteries, known as NCM (nickel cobalt manganese) batteries, for the Model Y to be produced at Tesla’s Gigafactory Shanghai facility in the first quarter of 2021, sources said. CATL, China’s leading battery maker, had been tipped as one of the strongest candidates, but was excluded as a supplier as it focuses on a different, low-cost type of battery, known as LFP (cobalt-free lithium-iron-phosphate). Currently, Tesla uses CATL-made LFP cells for its low-end made-in-China Model 3 sedans, while outsourcing batteries from LG Chem for high-end Model 3 vehicles, also made in China." 2021 could see 360,000 Model Y's produced. 30,000 a month? Well this year LG Chem will have around 100GWh of capacity, which they're planning on being 260GWh by 2023. https://www.kedglobal.com/newsView/ked202011200008 RIVIAN CEO EYES SMALLER EVS FOR CHINA & EUROPE "Rivian, which is backed by Amazon and Ford, on Wednesday said it plans to follow up its first two products, a full-size pickup and SUV, with smaller models targeted at China and Europe where it may eventually build some vehicles. While Rivian plans to begin selling the SUV in Europe in 2022 and China soon after, "what will really drive volume in those markets is the follow-on products" that are smaller and tailored for overseas customers, Rivian founder and CEO R.J. Scaringe told Reuters." reports Automotive News Europe: "The company's first plant in Normal, Ilinois, has begun pilot production ahead of next year's launch of three models -- the R1T pickup and R1S SUV, which Scaringe described as "halo products" for Rivian, and a large electric delivery van for Amazon. Scaringe said Rivian has begun setting up service centers and will deploy mobile units to handle maintenance and repair work on Amazon's vans, as well as Rivian vehicles for retail customers." Scaringe said: "To really scale in those markets as we bring on follow-on products, having a production footprint outside the U.S. is going to be important. That's a ways off. We wouldn't be serious about building a car company if we weren't thinking about China and Europe as important markets long term." https://europe.autonews.com/automakers/rivian-ceo-eyes-smaller-evs-china-europe GM WILL LAUNCH 30 EVS AROUND THE WORLD BY 2025 "General Motors is leaving no room for doubt as to whether or not it’s dedicated to electrification: the Detroit-based automaker announced today at a conference hosted by British bank Barclays that it is increasing its investment in electric and autonomous technology by $7 billion and will have 30 EVs on the market by 2025. That brings GM’s total EV and autonomous tech investment through 2025 to $27 billion as the automaker moves toward a full-electric lineup." writes Car & Driver: "This increase in planned electric vehicles—up from the 20 slated to hit the market by 2023—GM said, is made possible by the flexible Ultium platform which can be adapted to a variety of different vehicles. That platform can also now give vehicles a range of up to 450 miles, up from the 400 miles which GM claimed at an “EV Day” back in March. Alongside the scaling of EV production, GM expects that the cost of its Ultium batteries will drop by 60 percent by the middle of this decade, bringing the batteries “closer to cost parity with gas-powered engines.”" Cadillac will have the Lyriq which has been moved up by 9 months, Celestiq, GMC's Hummer truck and SUV, new Chevrolet the new Bolt EUV. Interesting fact about the Hummer EV, that will have a development of 26 months down from the usual 50. That means the Chevy Pickup will be moved up 11 months from originally planned and the Chevy Crossover by 21 months. Bearing in mind the Hummer ships late next year - at the moment there is no drivable development vehicle. At this presentation we also got to see the Hummer SUV in the background. At present, Tesla has set up a total of 45 super charging stations and 34 destination charging stations in Beijing, covering the urban core and surrounding popular self-driving routes." repotrs SMM News: "Tesla will build nearly 650 super charging stations, more than 5000 super charging piles and more than 2000 destination charging piles in China, covering more than 270major cities and inter-city connections. In addition, in view of the problem that some Tesla super-charging pile parking spaces are occupied by fuel vehicles, Tesla set up intelligent ground locks or property management personnel in the parking spaces, in which Tesla car owners need to scan the QR code above the parking spaces before charging the car to obtain verification information, which can be "unlocked" after entering the verification information into the APP." https://news.metal.com/newscontent/101322517/Tesla-the-largest-V3-supercharging-station-in-North-China-landed-in-Wangjing-Beijing/ https://twitter.com/teslacn/status/1329059302716235779 https://teslamotorsclub.com/tmc/threads/tesla-china-installed-parking-barrier-to-prevent-ice-occupy-the-superchanger.45088/ TESLA OPENS WORLD’S NORTHERNMOST SUPERCHARGER STATION "Varangerbotn, some 400 kilometers inside the Arctic Circle, is the most faraway location Tesla has turned on the power anywhere on the European continent. The two nearest Supercharger stations are Puoltikasvaara (Sweden), 623 km to the south, and Sørkjosen (Norway) 562 km to the west." says The Barents Observer: "Ten new Supercharger stations inside the Arctic Circle in northern Scandinavia are in the pipe. The network is geographically well distributed throughout the region and the chosen locations are at the main crossroads. As previously reported by The Barents Observer, local power companies in Troms and Finnmark county, with financial support from the Norwegian state, are deploying a network of 17 high-power 175 kW chargers and eight 50 kW fast chargers. By November 20, nine of the stations are opened, while most of the remaining will be connected to the grid before Christmas." https://thebarentsobserver.com/en/new-energy/2020/11/tesla-opens-worlds-northernmost-supercharger-station TESLA FIRMWARE HINTS AT MODEL Y RANGE BOOST "Tesla firmware revealed that the Model Y may receive a range boost via an efficiency package in 2021. Resident Tesla hacker @greentheonly found evidence in Tesla’s 2020.44.5 firmware that possibly indicate an increase in the Model Y’s range next year. " says Teslarati: "According to the trusted hacker, Tesla released an efficiency package for the Model 3 already. It could release a similar efficiency package for the Model Y. The Model Y efficiency package would probably compliment the release of the all-electric crossover’s seven-seater variant. In October, Elon Musk revealed that the Fremont Factory would start production on Model Y’s seven-seat version this month. He predicted that initial seven-seater Model Y deliveries could start as early as December, right in time for Christmas and New Year’s." https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-model-y-range-update-efficiency-package-2021/ PROTERRA CELEBRATES ITS 1,000TH BATTERY-ELECTRIC BUS "Broward County Transit (BCT) has agreed to purchase 12, 40-foot Proterra® ZX5™ battery-electric transit buses with 660 kWh of onboard energy and the DuoPower™ drivetrain. With this purchase, Proterra has now sold more than 1,000 battery-electric transit buses in North America." write Mass Transit website: "introduced in September, the Proterra ZX5 features more energy storage and a longer drive range. Proterra says the DuoPower drivetrain delivers nearly twice the horsepower and five times better fuel efficiency than a standard diesel engine. The DuoPower drivetrain features two electric motors that deliver a 550 horsepower, accelerating a ZX5 bus from zero to 20 mph in under six seconds." EV ENQUIRIES SOARED 500% AFTER GOVERNMENT’S 2030 CAR SALES RULING "Electric vehicle (EV) enquiries soared by 500% after this week’s UK Government announcement that it plans to ban the sale of cars and vans powered wholly by petrol or diesel engines in 2030." according to AM Online: "As Prime Minister Boris Johnson set the sector on the path to an all-out ban to include hybrids from 2035 car buyers headed online to see what their immediate alternative fuel vehicle (AFV) buying options might be today, according to data from BuyaCar. The online car sales portal said that EV enquiries would normally represent around 300 searches per day, from a stock of more than 60,000 cars, but this week’s announcement saw that figure shoot up to 1,679 in the 24 hours following the Prime Minister’s announcement. https://www.am-online.com/news/market-insight/2020/11/20/ev-enquiries-soared-500-after-government-s-2030-car-sales-ruling You can listen to all 933 previous episodes of this this for free, where you get your podcasts from, plus the blog https://www.evnewsdaily.com/ – remember to subscribe, which means you don’t have to think about downloading the show each day, plus you get it first and free and automatically. Carzaam Automotive News Episode 15 Nissan Turns Over a New Leaf The biggest car debut – of a real car – at CES was the Nissan Ariya. It’s a crossover / SUV that’s intended to replace the 10-year-old Leaf, Nissan’s flagship EV model. The Ariya is bigger than the Leaf, offers two motors where the Leaf has one, and gets up to 300 miles on a charge versus 225 for the Leaf. Nissan will use the second generation of its ProPilot Assist self-driving technology, which provides Level 3 hands-off driving and should be priced to start around $40,000. The ProPilot Level 3 autonomy means self-driving on some roads (typically freeways), but you will have to keep your eyes on the road (and they’ll be tracked by an optical monitor). Most importantly drivers will need to take over control when exiting a highway but also if the car cannot cope with a complex driving situation. Where the Leaf drives the front wheels only, the Ariya will offer all-wheel drive, with motors both front and rear and the modulated use of regenerative braking to minimize pitch and dive. Other than Chevrolet Bolt EV, the Nissan Leaf is the best-selling non-Tesla EV in the US, even despite sales being 60% off their 2014 peak. From Nissan’s perspective The Ariya can’t come soon enough. Amazon knocks it out of the park at CES2020 Amazon celebrated the start of the new year with a focus on the comprehensive integration of Alexa into the automotive sector and revealed its extensive partnerships with multiple auto manufacturers. Amazon announced that Alexa would soon be the digital voice assistant for Lamborghini and EV startup Rivian. Lamborghini plans to introduce the built-in Alexa feature in its Huracán Evo model and EV startup Rivian plans to integrate the voice-enabled services in its R1T pickup truck and R1S SUV. Alexa will allow the driver to make phone calls, get navigation help, play music and also connect to the drivers home Echo device, allowing the user to switch on lights or regulate the temperature. Because Lamborghini caters to the premium segment and not the mass consumer market, Amazon also launched its pocket-friendly car assistant Echo Auto which is soon to be sold globally. Cars as pods only as OEMs lose control A major trend that emerged from CES in Las Vegas this year was the depth of the identity crisis that has hit the auto industry. Toyota openly admitted that it had no idea where its long-term future lay. “Mobility”, the word carmakers use these days to describe the point of their industry in a future where autonomous robotaxis hold sway, suggests that personal transport will become an undifferentiated utility. Toyota presented a vision in which cars were reduced to bland pods shuttling people around a smart city. If this is only one element in a bigger urban system, then Toyota has followed the thought to its logical conclusion: it says it will start construction next year on a test city to help shape its future strategy. The prototype city named Woven City will start with a 175-acre site not far from Mount Fuji in Japan where the automaker used to build cars. Toyota is planning to build an all-encompassing city of the future where the automaker can conduct research right where people live their everyday lives. Toyota wants to have 2,000 people living in the city full-time once it opens. The idea is to bring together autonomous driving technology, hydrogen fuel cell power production and real-world learning. AUDI STRUGGLES WITH E-TRON PRODUCTION BECAUSE OF SUPPLIERS "Audi is making some major personnel changes at their Brussels plant, where the e-tron quattro electric SUV is manufactured. The jobs of at least 145 temporary workers are to be put on hold. In the worst case, this lot could threaten up to 250 employees." says Chris at electrive, with info coming from two German articles and one in French: "The Belgian news agency Belga broke the news. The agency cites difficulties of a supplier to deliver parts needed for the installation of the batteries in the electric SUVs as the reason for Audi letting the temps go. The Belgian newspaper L’Echo however, becomes more specific and presumes the supply issue concerns the battery cells and implicates LG Chem in particular. The production of the Audi e-tron in Brussels will, therefore, be reduced by 4,100 to 5,700 vehicles in the first quarter, the report continues." Audi plant spokesman Peter D’hoore: "We are facing an unexpected situation and have taken measures to stabilise supplies" https://www.electrive.com/2020/01/26/audi-makes-personnel-changes-in-brussels-factory/ RIVIAN: EXPECT PRICES LOWER THAN PREVIOUSLY ANNOUNCED Electric vehicle startup Rivian on Saturday displayed its pickup truck and SUV at an event in San Francisco’s Bay Area and said that when their prices are unveiled soon they will be lower than has been previously announced." says a Reuters report: "Rivian founder and chief executive R.J. Scaringe told Reuters the mid-range R1T pickup truck with a glass sky panel that can change from blue to clear was about $69,000. It can travel 300 miles on a full charge. The forecast takes into account Tesla’s history of production delays, potential supply-chain constraints and the complexity of manufacturing high-quality cars at scale, LMC Automotive said. Tesla, a pioneer in electric cars, probably will have an edge for the next one-to-two years before competition starts catching up, said David Whiston, an analyst at Morningstar Inc. in Chicago." https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2020-01-06/musk-plans-to-come-to-shanghai-for-debut-of-made-in-china-tesla And from Electrek: "Tesla always said that they plan to produce both the Model 3 and Model Y at Gigafactory 3 in Shanghai, but they never confirmed a timeline for Model Y. Model Y is supposed to go into production in Fremont for the US market in the next few months. It was rumored that production in Shanghai could be not too far behind, and now Tesla is expected to lay out a clear plan to bring the vehicle in production in the country. Among the most noticeable parts of this layout is a large area marked “cell.”" according to Tasmanian: "The size of the building marked “cell” in GF4’s planned layout inspires a lot of speculation. Based on its size, it appears that Tesla may be looking to manufacture actual battery cells on location in GF4." https://www.tesmanian.com/blogs/tesmanian-blog/tesla-gigafactory-4-battery-cell-productionfacility EV SUBSIDIES EXTENDED IN SEVERAL US STATES "Several US American states have launched initiatives to support the electrification of their traffic. Massachusetts and Delaware extended their subsidy programmes, while Ohio is angling to introduce one. That will drive an electric motor with 141bhp and 195lb ft of torque and give a range of around 130 miles. The lithium ion battery pack is made in Japan by Panasonic. Mazda’s engineers have also tuned the torque delivery of the MX-30’s electric motor to be less frenetic than is often the case with EVs, reasoning that they want the MX-30 to feel less like a dramatic change from a typical internal combustion engine vehicle." https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/new-cars/mazda-favours-smaller-batteries-upcoming-evs PATREON UPDATE I want to say a massive thank you to ASEER KHALID who upgraded his support from EXECUTIVE PRODUCER level, and opted to support with more outof the blue. Show #493 Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Wednesday 6th June 2019. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story to save you time. Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too. New Patreon Supporters! Firstly welcome to PRODUCER Christian Marler. And we have a new EXECUTIVE PRODUCER Pontus Kindblad. ASTON MARTIN TO DISPLAY RAPIDE E AT FULLY CHARGED LIVE "Aston Martin confirmed its presence at the upcoming Fully Charged Live event (7-9 June) at the Silverstone Wing complex, with the presentation of the Aston Martin Rapide E for the very first time in the UK." reports InsideEVs: "That not the only good news, as the Rapide E will be joined by the 1970 DB6 Volante mk2 EV, shown by Fully Charged a few months ago, converted to electric drive by Aston Martin Works" Aston Martin Vehicle Line Director John Caress said: “We showcased Rapide E for the first time in Shanghai and we proved what Rapide E can do on the track in Monaco. However, I am now incredibly pleased to be able to display Aston Martin’s first all-electric model here in the UK for the first time this weekend at Fully Charged Live. This event not only highlights the level of interest in alternative technologies within the automotive industry, but also across a broader spectrum, and Rapide E embodies our interpretation of how a luxury sportscar can fit within that world. Electrification is key to Aston Martin Lagonda’s future and we look forward to showcasing the luxury brand’s first step in this direction”. range of more than 200 miles (320 km) under WLTP cycle 65 kWh battery (5,600 lithium-ion cells – 18650 type) rear-wheel drive with two motors total system output of 450 kW (604 bhp / 612 PS) and 950Nm (700 lb-ft) 0-60 mph (nearly 100 km/h) in less than 4 seconds 50-70 mph in 1.5 seconds top speed of 155 mph (250 km/h) 800 V system voltage with capability to charge at 100 kW or more 3 h recharge using on-board charger https://insideevs.com/news/353275/aston-martin-rapide-e-fully-charged-live/ WHAT THE HELL HAPPENED BETWEEN RENAULT AND FIAT CHRYSLER? "The grand merger plan between Renault and Fiat Chrysler, just barely a week old, completely fell apart yesterday evening. It really did come out of nowhere – everything was great and awesome until suddenly everyone put out statements saying the deal was completely dead." says Jalopnik: "But who the hell killed it depends on who you ask. Here’s the Wall Street Journal, with an account blaming increasingly spiteful Renault partner Nissan: With Nissan representatives prepared to abstain if Renault’s board took a vote, the French government asked for more time so that Finance Minister Bruno Le Maire could use an upcoming visit to Japan to press the case for a merger with the Japanese, according to a French official. Complicating the consummation of the deal was the two-decade partnership between Renault and Nissan in which they, along with Mitsubishi Motors Corp., share technology and vehicle parts. Renault owns 43.4% of Nissan, while Nissan owns 15% of Renault. People close to Fiat Chrysler and Renault said for the merger to succeed it needed Nissan’s buy-in, in part because the Japanese company co-owns some of the intellectual property that underpins the alliance." Or was it neither Nissan nor Renault, but actually the state of France itself? Here’s Reuters: The French government, which has a 15% stake in Renault, had welcomed the merger plan, but overplayed its hand by pushing for a series of guarantees and concessions that eventually exhausted the patience of FCA, sources familiar with the talks said. Wrong-footed by FCA’s decision to withdraw its merger proposal late on Wednesday, a French official called FCA Chairman John Elkann early on Thursday to see if he might reconsider, but was rebuffed, one of the sources said. https://jalopnik.com/what-the-hell-happened-between-renault-and-fiat-chrysle-1835295448 RIVIAN R1T AND R1S WILL FEATURE VEHICLE-TO-VEHICLE CHARGING "Rivian CEO RJ Scaringe recently shared some new insights about the R1T pickup truck and the R1S SUV in an interview with auto publication The Drive. During his interview, Scaringe discussed Rivian’s battery technology" writes Simon from Teslarati: "Scaringe noted that the company is preparing solutions that will enable drivers to recharge their vehicles off the grid, such as auxiliary battery packs. The CEO also added that the company would allow vehicle-to-vehicle charging, allowing two Rivians to charge each other. “We’ve designed the vehicle so you can have auxiliary battery packs. You can also charge Rivian-to-Rivian, which is a neat thing. You connect the two vehicles, and then I could hand you some electrons,” Scaringe said." https://www.teslarati.com/rivian-r1t-r1s-vehicle-to-vehicle-charging/ TOYOTA AND SUBARU AGREE TO JOINTLY DEVELOP BEV-DEDICATED PLATFORM AND BEV SUV Toyota Motor Corporation (Toyota) and Subaru Corporation (Subaru) disclosed today that they have agreed to jointly develop a platform dedicated to battery electric vehicles (BEVs) for midsize and large passenger vehicles and to jointly develop a C-segment-class BEV SUV model for sale under each company's own brand. By combining their respective strengths, such as the all-wheel-drive technologies that Subaru has cultivated over many years and the vehicle electrification technologies that Toyota is employing to bring together other companies that share its aspirations, the two companies intend to take up the challenge of creating attractive products with appeal that only BEVs can offer. https://global.toyota/en/newsroom/corporate/28377766.html MOTOR TREND SAYS TESLA MODEL 3 LONG RANGE AWD IS FASTER THAN YOU THINK Stephen Loveday for InsideEVs says: "We welcome Motor Trend's (MT) first official test review of the Tesla Model 3 Long Range dual motor all-wheel-drive sedan. According to the publication: "It's the fourth-quickest sedan we've ever tested behind the Model S P100D Ludicrous (2.3 seconds to 60 mph), Porsche Panamera (2.8), BMW M5, and Mercedes-AMG E 63 S (tied at 3.0), each one of which is all-wheel drive." MT admits that all-wheel drive has not always been the go-to when it comes to sports cars. It adds extra weight and simply may not be needed in most sports-car-driving situations. However, with instant all-electric torque, superb traction control, and excellent road grip, it can be a desirable option, "especially for heavier cars." https://insideevs.com/reviews/353342/tesla-model-3-long-range-awd-quick/ VOLKSWAGEN PLANS 36,000 CHARGING POINTS Volkswagen is aiming for a rapid breakthrough for e-mobility and is redoubling its efforts in the field of charging infrastructure. Throughout Europe, the Group will be installing a total of 36,000 charging points by 2025; 11,000 of these are to be developed by the Volkswagen brand. They will be installed at Volkswagen plants and at about 3,000 Volkswagen dealerships in all large towns and cities. With its Group company for charging infrastructure Elli (Electric Life) and its charging service “We Charge”, Volkswagen is also moving into further lucrative business areas connected with charging. All in all, the Group is investing about €250 million at its European locations. At the same time, the Group calls for other measures to take effect rapidly for more charging stations in Germany. https://www.volkswagenag.com/en/news/2019/06/36,000_charging_points_for_electric_cars.html Question of the Week. Rivian is an interesting new electric vehicle company with backing from Amazon and Ford. Here's a walkaround the R1T pickup truck with Brian Gace, the companies special projects chief engineer. It should answer a lot of questions you might have about the pickup and the R1S SUV that is scheduled to be built in Normal, Illinois. This is not a review. It's simply a way for me to offer you a look at the truck and some of the interesting design elements in it.
Show #453 Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Wednesday 24th April 2019. It’s Martyn Lee here and I’ve been through every EV story I could find today to save you time. Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too. Thank you to Freejoule aka James (I”'m super busy with my day job and don't get much time to catch up on the EV news. Nothing beats this podcast!”) for increasing his Patreon Suppoer, now an EXECUTIVE PRODUCER. Hello to new EXECUTIVE PRODUCER DERRICK LIKES. And new PRODUCER SAMUEL. TESLA’S Q1 2019 FINANCIAL RESULTS AND EARNINGS CALL Simon at Teslarati looks ahead to the Q1 results: "Expectations are quite tempered for Tesla this quarter, following the company’s less-than-expected production and delivery numbers in Q1. After a record number of production and deliveries in the fourth quarter of 2018, Tesla’s electric car deliveries fell by around 30%, while total production numbers fell by around 12%. TSLA stock has been weighed down by these results since their release in early April, with the company off around 20% this year," https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-tsla-q1-2019-earnings-call-what-to-expect/ RIVIAN GETS $500 MILLION INVESTMENT FROM FORD "Rivian just became reality with this major investment from the U.S.' sales leader in trucks." says Eric Loveday for InsideEVs.com: "Following the major investment made by Amazon, Ford has announced a $500 million investment into Rivian. Rivian, the maker of the R1T pickup truck and R1S SUV, is solely focused on electric adventure vehicles. For now, that's limited to the truck and SUV, but in the future, several more models are planned. An additional note on the investment is that the "companies have agreed to work together to develop an all-new, next-generation battery electric vehicle for Ford’s growing EV portfolio using Rivian’s skateboard platform." Ford says that the Rivian deal and new offering are "in addition to Ford’s existing plans to develop a portfolio of battery electric vehicles" and notes that "Ford already has confirmed two key fully electric vehicles: a Mustang-inspired crossover coming in 2020 and a zero-emissions version of the best-selling F-150 pickup." VErge says: "Ford has decided what kind of vehicle it will build on Rivian’s platform, but it declined to specify. Just two months ago, Rivian announced a $700 million investment round led by Amazon. Rivian was also in talks with GM, but the startup reportedly backed out of the potential exclusive deal." Engadget says: "Rivian stressed that it would remain an independent company, but acknowledged that Ford's automotive president Joe Hinrichs was joining its board of directors." CNBC looked at the specs of the R1T and R1S: "Both trucks have 754 horsepower and can go from zero to 60 miles per hour in three seconds, with a top speed of 125 miles per hour. They also have three battery capacity options: 105 kilowatt-hour (kWH), which can travel up to 240 miles on one charge; 135 kilowatt-hour that can travel up to 310 miles; and 180 kilowatt-hour that can travel up to 410 miles." https://insideevs.com/news/346329/rivian-ford-investment-500-million/ A NEW TESLA MODEL S CAN NOW DRIVE FROM LOS ANGELES TO SAN FRANCISCO ON A SINGLE CHARGE "Tesla has announced that it has extended the range of its Model S vehicle to 370 miles and Model X to 325 miles on a single charge " reports TechCrunch: "Both models now have the newest drive unit technology, Tesla said. Combining an optimized permanent magnet synchronous reluctance motor, silicon carbide power electronics and improved lubrication, cooling, bearings and gear designs the new cars can achieve better than 93 percent efficiency, Tesla said in a statement." https://techcrunch.com/2019/04/23/a-new-tesla-model-s-or-x-can-now-drive-from-los-angeles-to-san-francisco-on-a-single-charge/ Whilst Wade Malone for InsideEVs.com reports: "Along with this, getting your charge will take less time than ever before. Plugged into the new Supercharger V3, the vehicles will feed on that sweet electro-juice at a peak rate of 200 kW. On older, existing Supercharger stations, the vehicles can now utilize 145 kW charging. According to Tesla this accounts for a 50% improvement in charge speeds. The suspension is also being updated with "fully-adaptive damping, giving it an ultra-cushioned feel". Tesla says the new upgrades will constantly adapt to driver behavior and road conditions "automatically softening for more pronounced road inputs and firming for aggressive driving"." https://insideevs.com/news/346209/tesla-model-s-x-upgrade-more-range-efficiency/ EXTREME E TO PARTNER WITH SPARK RACING TECHNOLOGY Extreme E has joined forces with motorsport manufacturer Spark Racing Technology to engineer, develop and assemble the all-new electric SUV model for the pioneering off-road racing series. Spark Racing Technology will create and construct the common package with strict specification parts, before handing over the homologated framework to each team – allowing competitors to test and develop their own powertrain and bodywork. Prototype testing is scheduled to take place in July this year together with founding partner Continental Tyres, with the teams receiving the first delivery of 12 cars from Spark Racing Technology in March 2020. Teams will later have the opportunity to put the Extreme E cars through their paces with collective group testing in the summer, before hopping on board the newly-renovated RMS St. Helena for the first race in January 2021. EV STARTUP LUCID MOTORS APPOINTS FORMER TESLA VP OF VEHICLE ENGINEERING AS CEO "Luxury electric vehicle startup Lucid Motors today announced that its Board of Directors has appointed Peter Rawlinson as CEO, effective immediately. He will retain his role as CTO where is responsible for all of Lucid's design and engineering activities, including the automaker's first car—the Lucid Air ultra-luxury electric sedan." according to FutureCar.com: "Rawlinson joined Lucid in 2013 after working at Tesla. Rawlinson served as Vice President of Vehicle Engineering and Chief Engineer of the Tesla Model S, working under Elon Musk. Prior to Tesla, he was Chief Engineer at Lotus Cars and Principal Engineer at Jaguar Cars." https://www.futurecar.com/3154/EV-Startup-Lucid-Motors-Appoints-Former-Tesla-VP-of-Vehicle-Engineering-as-CEO NEXT-GEN PORSCHE BOXSTER, CAYMAN GOING PURE ELECTRIC It’s probably only a matter of time before Porsche will electrify its core sports car, the 911. Not only that, but it looks like the Boxster and Cayman duo is also going to get a charging port as a new report from Autocar suggests the Stuttgart-based marque has green-lighted pure electric versions of the entry-level sports cars." writes Adrian for Motor1.com: "Porsche chairman Oliver Blume has revealed in an interview with Autocar the company is already testing pure electric 718 prototypes while working on a hybrid 718. He went on to mention they haven’t made up their minds yet about whether the cars will be getting plug-in hybrid or hybrid setups, but the plan is to sell Boxster and Cayman EVs alongside electrified versions of the two models. According to the same report, the entirely electric models are expected to switch to Porsche’s new PPE platform while the hybrid / plug-in hybrid derivatives could stick to the current underpinnings, albeit in an updated form that allows electrification." https://www.motor1.com/news/346212/next-porsche-boxster-cayman-electric/ DAIMLER SAYS BATTERY-ELECTRIC TRUCKS KEY TO ZERO EMISSIONS COMMERCIAL TRANSPORT "Battery-electric vehicles are the key to zero-emission commercial transportation in North America, according to Daimler Trucks North America, which is moving forward with battery-electric vehicle commercialization, contending that hydrogen fuel cells aren’t ready for prime time."reports TruckingInfo.com today: "“The road to emissions-free transportation is going to be driven with battery-electric vehicles. I believe the future is electric,” said Roger Nielsen, president and CEO of DTNA, speaking to a crowd assembled in Long Beach for the ACT Expo April 24. The company announced it will begin converting its Portland manufacturing plant to produce electric Freightliners, “to enable rapid scale-up of thoroughly tested and validated electric vehicles,” it said in a release. Although DTNA’s vision of electric vehicles does not exclude fuel cells, he said, “I can see a glimpse of it over the horizon, but it will not be this generation of engineers who will be delivering it.”" https://www.truckinginfo.com/330460/daimler-says-battery-electric-trucks-key-to-zero-emissions-commercial-transport COMMUNITY And thanks to MYEV.com they’ve set us another Question Of The Week. Some say it’s basically a slightly taller Model 3, others would say the popular SUV or crossover shape will make it even more popular than the Model 3. It was March 31st 2016 when the Model 3 was unveiled so we’re almost three years on from that date. You can livestream the event on Thursday night at 8pm PST. Tesla has also added Model Y to their website now, and the menu at the top is in the correct order, The S, the 3, the X and the Y. So it’s sexy. And if you want, then it’s the R, so sexyr. You weekend watch is this from Joe Rogan: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IsO3QiCR6_g NEW RIVIAN R1T ELECTRIC PICKUP TRUCK IMAGE SHOWS INSIDE OF FACTORY "This new image of the Rivian R1T electric pickup truck shows us a glimpse of the Rivian factory, as well as providing us with what may become the automaker’s motto." says Eric Loveday for InsideEVs: "Rivian has been pitching its R1T truck and R1S SUV as adventure vehicles (Rivian trademarked that phrase, in fact), but now we see what could become the automaker’s tagline or motto. Maybe not the catchiest of phrases, but again it reinforces Rivian’s adventure vehicle approach. The R1T and R1S are indeed off-road capable electric vehicles and Rivian is surely pitching that point to the world." "Of all the paths you take in life, make sure a few are dirt." https://insideevs.com/rivian-r1t-ev-pickup-truck-factory/ XL PHEV SYSTEM IMPROVES FORD F-250 TRUCK FUEL ECONOMY BY 50% "As earlier announced, XL presents at the NTEA Work Truck Show in Indianapolis its plug-in hybrid system installed in Ford F-250 Super Duty Pickup." according to Mark Kane at InsideEVs: "The initial assessment performed by XL reportedly indicates the potential for up to 50% improvement in miles driven per gallon (MPG) over the conventional factory F-250. Reduction of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions is expected to be at 33% during normal operation.Having a 15 kWh battery (rechargeable externally via J1772) and electric motor supporting the engine, the XL doesn’t have any real all-electric range, so it’s kind of a hybrid vehicle with a plug-in capability compared to typical PHEVs, which usually can move in all-electric mode. We could call it a base electrification approach for times where there are no factory plug-in hybrids." https://insideevs.com/xl-phev-improve-ford-f-250-fuel-economy/ MG IS LAUNCHING AN ELECTRIC CAR LATER THIS YEAR "MG plans to join the electric revolution with its first battery electric production car. The Chinese-owned brand's maiden electric offering, the MG ZS EV, is based on the company's ZS SUV and will go on sale this autumn." writes Dominik Wilde for Motor1. Daniel Gregorious, Head of Sales & Marketing at MG. : "With the launch of our MG ZS electric SUV we’re delighted to be entering the electric car market at such an exciting time. With all the practicality and versatility of a compact SUV, a full-sized boot and room for five, ZS means electric without compromise. With MG’s trademark value-for-money approach, we’re confident that we can help more and more new car buyers to go electric". MINI COOPER SE ELECTRIC 2020: FIRST REVIEWS, SPECS, PRICES AND RELEASE Thanks to The Week, they've rounded up some quotes from the Mini Cooper SE Electric. Thanks to the instant torque provided by the car’s electric motor, which is derived from BMW’s i3 EV, acceleration in the Cooper SE is “brisk” and there’s a “remarkable” amount of traction, particularly on sodden surfaces, The Daily Telegraph says. Customers will find “plenty of interesting technology” on the electrified Mini, says CarBuyer. For instance, there are two forms of regenerative braking, a system that recharges the battery once drivers take their foot off the accelerator. In its highest setting, customers could easily drive through a city “without ever touching the brake pedal”. There’s no official word on pricing just yet. However, Car magazine says buyers should expect a figure of around £29,000. https://www.theweek.co.uk/electric-cars/100086/mini-cooper-se-electric-2020-first-reviews-specs-prices-release-peugeot-e208-ev TESLA MODEL 3 = BEST SELLING ELECTRIC CAR IN GERMANY The Tesla Model 3 has gone to the top of the sales charts in Germany: "In just 16 days, about half the month of February, Model 3s were delivered in different centers in Hamburg, Neuss, Düsseldorf, Frankfurt, Berlin, Stuttgart, Nuremberg, and Munich. Those are the delivery centers I am aware of, but there may be more out there." according to Alex Voigt for CleanTechnica. "In those two weeks of February, the Model 3 Long Range AWD already became the best-selling electric vehicle in Germany — even looking at the entire month. Only the Long Range premium Model 3 has been delivered so far, with two variations and a price point between about €45,000 and €76,000. Since March 1st, prices have actually been reduced and it can be fairly assumed that demand will further increase." https://cleantechnica.com/2019/03/09/tesla-model-3-best-selling-electric-car-in-germany/ JON BEARDY MCBEARDFACE I’m fine buying on line.....if I could afford a Tesla that is! It’s new to so many of us that will take time to adjust to the model but it’s the way it’s going. You can buy most things online these days already so why not cars? Regarding test drives will just need to open more places like the Milton Keynes EV Experience Centre or attend the likes of Fully Charged Live. That said the 1000mile money back Tesla guarantee should settle many worries. DAVID FINCH I think online-only is fine in this day and age, but with one big sticking point that you’ve highlighted on the show, test drives. Most people need the opportunity to experience the car before making the commitment, so the 7 day / 1000 mile return policy doesn’t properly fill that need. DAVID PARTINGTON Once the initial pent-up demand for Model 3s is used up, will there really be enough online demand to sell enough Model 3s, S, X, (and Ys) ? Although I think car sales will eventually move online to a large extent I fear that Tesla is just one step too far ahead of the market right now - especially selling what is still for first-time EV customers a really big, unusual and perceived-to-be-risky purchase. What if the car goes wrong ? What if there are snags ? If you can't drive back to a physical Tesla space then what do I do ? While us EV-enthusiasts might have faith in Tesla, will the ev-curious be willing to place an order ? I just don't know.... STEPHEN I think it is a shame that Tesla is closing the sales studios. I was not an EV fan years ago but have become interested lately. I took a test drive of a Tesla model S in Denver and was blown away. Most people would be amazed if only they drove one. It is the quickest way to make a believer SERVULUS BILLY When I bought my model S everything was done completely online, Even the processing of my financing through a 3rd party bank, the only time I signed papers with Tesla is when I showed up to pick up the car. This is not something new, we do our banking online, renewal of passport and licenses online, it promotes conveniences and cost savings and if it hastens the move to sustainable transport and ushers in new era of an affordable electric car .....a decent affordable electric car then I am all for it. JOHN FRUHWIRTH I feel fine with it. It is the way of the future. It saves Tesla a ton of money and that's a good thing. As for test drives not being available, a prospective purchaser still has a number of options as follows: Rent a Tesla for a day or a weekend Join a Tesla owners club and arrange a drive with one of the members So, even though traditional test drives from Tesla are a thing of the past, where there is a will, there is a way. DANA PEARSON While I feel for job's lost, this move is absolutely BRILLIANT! The roughly 12% cost reduction enables them to SIGNIFICANTLY reduce prices across the board. The cars now sell themselves! As Elon has said, the ONLY barrier is price for most folks! He's RIGHT! Now, with loads flooding Europe and a bunch already on US roads, word of mouth is KING and this is a snowball ONLY slowed by PRICE! ART LIGHTHOUSE I essentially ordered my last Tesla online, and I thought the experience was absolutely great... much better than the typical buying experience from a dealership. I loved that I received constant updates over my account as the vehicle was assigned a VIN, then moved through production, then shipping, then delivery. Perhaps most of all, I appreciated that I could see and download my own PDF copy of the vehicle overview: which included the price we were paying, the options that we had selected, and the incentives we were receiving from Tesla. ARILD GEIR SKAALSVEEN For me no possibility to get a test drive and the only online sale strategy from Tesla is really bad. Five years ago my wife and waiited until we had the opportunity to drive the model S before we decided to signed the contract. Last summer we borrowed a model X for one day before we decided to sell our model s and order the x. BRUNO ARRIOLA At first, I thought that it was a good move corporate wise in order to save some money (similar to the online-only model that companies like Amazon use) but they will definitely need to offer some kind of service where they bring the car to you for a test drive. I can't personally picture me buying a car without test driving it first. I'm also afraid that people will start abusing Tesla's return policy and could potentially hurt their business in the long run. WALTER MACVANE Tesla should have one flagship store in a very central location in each Metropolitan area. Sales should be well informed and engaging. Each model should be on display, with each interior and exterior variant in showing (currently 5 paint colors, 5 interior trims so only 5 display units required). Service should be customer centric, and specifically specializing in rare and expensive models (roadsters). And a flagship Supercharger station to promote the transition for potential customers. KARL CRAMER Maybe Tesla should partner with a national car rental chain so that people can rent their cars. Like a paid test drive. THE PLUGSEEKER If removing stores means the base price model comes quicker for Model3 then I’m all for it. I think it’s the way of the future, I also hate having to haggle in showrooms. Perhaps later we may even find costs of Model S / X may come down a little too? Or more options may start to come in standard trim. MARTIN YOUNG People will quickly discover that evaluating a car for a week or more after purchase is far better than a 20 minute test-drive with a salesperson riding along with you. Returning the car and canceling a loan will also not be the problem that some people anticipate. After all, this is exactly the way CarMax (where I purchased my Chevy Volt) operates and it is consistently rated much higher than franchise dealers on surveys of customer satisfaction. Rivian debuted two concepts last November at the Los Angeles Auto Show and attracted as much attention as any vehicle at the automotive industry's first major show of the year. The all-electric concepts, the R1T pick-up and R1S SUV, have gained substantial attention since. The vehicles' debut is scheduled for late 2020 through direct sales. The Rivian concept is an all-electric SUV with 0-60 mph speed in 3.0 seconds and a 400-mile range. Image © James Raia/2018 Michael McHale, the company's director of communications, is our guest on this week's episode of The Weekly Driver Podcast. Co-hosts Bruce Aldrich and James Raia discuss with McHale the pending debut of the vehicles and how the innovated truck and SUV could change the automotive landscape. The company has been touted as a competitor to Tesla, a proposition it welcomes. Rivian was founded nearly 10 years ago by Mainstream Motors in Florida. Its name was changed to Avera and now Rivian. The SUV and pick-up have beautiful futuristic designs and impressive specs, including a 400-plus mile range and 0-60 miles per hour acceleration in 3.0 seconds. Among other topics, we also discuss with McHale, how Rivian was named, its eco-friendly mission, level 3 autonomy, pricing and available deposit reservations. Rivian also has a brand partner relationship with Alex Honnold. The Las Vegas-based mountain climber whose ascent of El Capitan in Yosemite is subject of the move Free Solo has an environmental-based foundation. You may have seen that Daily Detroit recently made its Detroit Public Television debut with a profile of Rivian, the electric vehicle maker that caught the automotive world by surprise last fall when it unveiled its high-powered, battery-electric pickup truck and SUV. For today’s episode, we’re following up on our promise to give you more from our visit to Rivian’s Plymouth Township headquarters. We have more from my interview with the company’s founder and CEO, R.J. Scaringe, including how the company is founded and why he’s confident they can clear the hurdles and start manufacturing their vehicles. Rivian is now taking orders on both the R1T pickup, which is slated for delivery to customers in late 2020, and the R1S SUV, which delivers in 2021. The former starts at $69,000, or $61,500 after federal electric-vehicle tax credits, while the latter starts at $72,500 ($65,000). In the meantime, enjoy the photos from our visit. Day 3 of the LA Auto Show was the last of the Media Days. The public show opened its 10-day run today (Nov. 30) and will continue through Dec. 9. A handful of vehicles attracted a vast amount of attention, and representatives of two of those companies are our guests on Episode #63 of The Weekly Driver Podcast. The Rivian Concept pick-up truck and SUV are potential competitors for Tesla and were featured at the LA Auto Show. Images © James Raia/2018 Bruce Aldrich produced the show remotely from interviews I had from the show. Our guests are Kevin Smith, a Senior Group Manager of Public Relations and Corporate Social Responsibility for Genesis, and Sethu Gopal, Senior Director of Connected Car and Digital Experience for Rivian. A third guest, a communications director for Polaris, did not make his scheduled interview. A huge sign on the front of Los Angeles Convention announced the 2019 Genesis G70 as the MotorTrend Car of the Year. The entry-level luxury sedan has received several honors and it's likely to receive several more. Smith and I discuss the reasons for the debut vehicle's success. He provides details of the two additional sedans in the Genesis lineup and plans for the now three-year-old brand's future vehicles. Rivian, the concept all-electric pick-up truck and sport utility vehicle, has often been touted as a pending competitor to Tesla. The company was founded nearly 10 years ago by Mainstream Motors in Florida. Its name was changed to Avera and now Rivian. It has two concepts at the LA Auto Show, the R1T pickup truck and R1S SUV. Gopal discusses the company's plans for the production of the vehicle. He also details some of the specs for the uniquely designed machines — a 400-plus mile range, 0-60 miles per hour times in 3.0 seconds and 11,000-pound towing capacities.
