Visit: www.salty.com.au We open this week with a short tribute to the late John Hammond — a player who stayed true to the roots and never overplayed it. A couple of his tracks to get things underway. After that, it's a well-balanced set — a mix of older cuts, newer releases, and a strong Australian showing. You'll hear Dan Dinnen N Shorty, Julian James N Moonshine State, Jen Mize N Rough N Tumble, Greg Numan N The General Jacksons, Shane O'Mara N Jac Tonks, Shane Pacey, Catch 23 and Van Walker alongside the internationals. We move through hill country with Junior Kimbrough, some clean Texas swing from Jimmy Vaughan, and a bit of groove from Delvon Lamarr Organ Trio. There are also a couple of pre-release tracks worth a listen. It's a steady run — blues and roots as you like it! We sat down with West Virginia/ Nashville/ New York-based Olivia Ellen Lloyd and had an amazing conversation. We chatted about Olivia's most recent release “Do It Myself” which was released in 2025 and was very much a DIY project for her. We discussed how her music has evolved and how she trusts her mind and gut when songwriting. Olivia Ellen Lloyd will try anything once. From flight attendant school in Dallas to producing theater in New York and teaching in Guatemala, Lloyd sought adventure but struggled to find a greater sense of purpose - until she found her way back to music. Channeling that restlessspirit, she writes songs that dig deep for hope in the face of hardship. Her debut album, Loose Cannon, has been streamed over 1 million times while she has been crossing the country playing shows, winning songwriting contests (like Kerrville New Folk in 2023) and generally eatinglife down to the rind. She also works as an in-demand side woman, singing backingvocals for the likes of Lizzie No, Emily Scott Robinson, and as part of the Resistance Revival Chorus, with Renee Rapp at the 2024 All Things Go festival. Lloyd has spent the past three years doubling down on her efforts to build community within the Alt-Country and Americana scene while deepening her working partnership with Mike Robinson, an in-demand sideman known for touring and recording with the likes of SierraFerrell and Zach Bryan. Mike served as her producer and primary instrumentalist on Do It Myself. Text us about this show.Gale Bird is the trio of husband and wife Joshua and Melissa Gale and friend Sean Monahan. Hailing from Charleston, SC, they combine lots of stacked vocal harmonies and southern grit with a lot of heart in their uplifting original songs. Their influences are quite varied and include the Eagles, Led Zeppelin, Rascal Flatts, Need To Breathe, Coldplay, and Alan Jackson. Along with those there are shades of jazz, soul, and straight up rock and roll in their music. They say they're "reshaping alternative country" and when you listen to their originals, you know they're only getting started. For Gale Bird, it's faith and being honest about their convictions that has them soaring in the Charleston music scene. All songs provided by Gale Bird and are used with their permission."Lookie Here" performed by Gale Birdwritten by Joshua Gale, Sean Monahan, Matt Ciclon, and Melissa Gale© 2025 Holy City Music."Roses" performed by Gale Birdwritten by Joshua Gale, Sean Monahan, and Matt Ciclon© 2025 Holy City Music."I Still Do" performed by Gale Birdwritten by Joshua Gale, Melissa Gale, Sean Monahan, Matt Ciclon, and Lance Henderson© 2025 Holy City Music."Eyes On You" written and performed by Gale Bird© 2024 Holy City Music.Melody Audiology LLCAudiology services for all. In this episode, we talk with Rob Miller, co-founder of Bloodshot Records and author of The Hours Were Long, but the Pay Was Low (3 Fields Books, 2025). Rob shares stories from the early days of building an influential indie label, the realities of DIY music culture, and what it really took to survive on passion, community, and very little money. It's an honest, funny look at the long hours behind independent music—and why it was all worth it. Rob is a Detroit native so of course we discussed Disco Demolition Night (Rob has an interesting angle as a Tiger fan) and why Lou Whitaker is not in the Baseball Hall of Fame.Rob Miller's website: https://www.robmillerwriting.com/Rob on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/robmillerwriting/Rob Miller's Bloodshot playlist: https://tinyurl.com/Bloodshot011226Please consider supporting Hooks & Runs by purchasing books, including those featured in this episode (if any were), through our store at Bookshop.org. Visit: www.salty.com.au BACKLINE is back for January tone hounds. We roll from raw modern blues and roots through to the deep catalogue — Eddie Taylor talking big-town truths, Johnny Winter cutting sharp, Jimmie Vaughan riding that groove like he always does. There's plenty of local fire running through this set too — Ash Grunwald, Stefan Hauk, Damon Smith, Fiona Boyes with Chris Wilson and Hubert Sumlin, Dan Dinnen N Shorty, Dom Turner with Kim Sinh, and Mia Kelly — all flying the flag with new cuts, live grit and boundary-pushing spirit that still respects the lineage. Add Bill Frisell bending Marvin Gaye into something new, Violent Femmes kicking the walls in, and Tom Waits reminding us how to hold on — and you've got a playlist that moves from backroom blues to late-night confessionals. This isn't background music — it's listening music! When a band's first album drops, it's exciting. When it shoots up to a top three position on the charts – any chart for that matter – something is happening. That's exactly what is happening to Ramona & The Holy Smokes whose eponymous debut album landed at No. 3 on the Alt Country Specialty Chart in early October. It has bounced around the top 10 since and debuted at No. 50 on the Americana Music Association charts on October 29. Founder and front woman Ramona Martinez joined Frank and Falls on Roots Music Rambler the day after the Alt-Country chart spike to talk about the new album, her decidedly old-school country sound, her journey to being an artist and much more. Martinez's parents were military and diplomacy professionals, so she lived in several different countries growing up. She landed in Charlottesville, Va., where her music career took hold, after several years working in public radio. The new album is full of Texas-sounding honky tonk drinkin' and thinkin' songs. The band's sound includes multicultural and bilingual numbers as well, underlining Martinez's South Texas family roots. Frank and Falls also have their Pickin' the Grinnin' selections for new music recommendations and Falls actually joins the show from the radio studio in Pikeville, Ky., where he first broadcast at 14-years-old in 1987. In this episode, I shine the spotlight on The Unfaithful Servants through a conversation with singer, guitarist, and songwriter Dylan Stone From Vancouver Island's roots scene to a week immersed at IBMA in Chattanooga, the Servants have built a sound that slips past easy labels: tight three- and four-part harmonies, fearless arrangements, and a blend of bluegrass, folk, alt-country, and Americana that still feels unmistakably like one band.Dylan walks me through the Servants' arc: his partnership with mandolinist Jesse Cobb (a founding member of The Infamous Stringdusters), the jolt of energy when fiddle phenom Quinn Etheridge-Peddon joined, and the final puzzle piece in bassist Mark Johnson. We discuss the chemistry that's palpable onstage and how trust enables them to push beyond genre boundaries while always prioritizing the song.Their new album, Fallen Angel (out October 17), captures that identity. The band converted Quinn's basement into a studio. It brought in producer Adrian Dolan to keep it honest and alive, arrangements evolving in real time, performances that breathe, and the raw cohesion of a working band. Today on a brand new episode of Let There Be Talk singer songwriter S.G. Goodman stops by to talk about her incredible new album Planting By The Signs available June 20th on all the streaming platforms. S.G. is a Kentucky based musician with roots in Americana and Alt Country music that I would say has a flavor of Lucinda Williams. I absolutely love her new album and I think you guys will too. Tyler Childers recently covered her song Space and Time and she explains to me how that all came about as well as how she got started in the music business. Great Episode so tune in now and enjoy.
