Was the non-lead ammo movement hatched by hunters, for wildlife... and is this still a controversial topic? In this call Micah Dungey (Institute for Wildlife Studies) gets us a light but informative background on the non-lead ammo movement. Why were California condors at the center of the non-lead ammo movement? We get into some of the controversy, the science and the opportunity for hunters to be the leading voices, and to be the market movers when it comes to wildlife and ecosystem issues. This conversation helped up our level of knowledge on the non-lead topic, and really drives home the idea that as hunters we have the opportunity to leaders with proactive work. Enjoy the chat, soak up some new information and let's rally to set the tone, define the path for protecting hunting, trapping and angling opportunity. People are considered the weakest link in any organization's cybersecurity defenses. Hence, in most cases, the primary targets of cyber-attackers are the employees of the organization. In addition, people are easier to compromise and exploit unlike finding a single software to breach an organization or enterprise business. While a lot of efforts go into improving the existing security infrastructure, ignorance of human resources would leave a significant gap in the defense strategy. Join ISACA's Research Advisor, Brian Fletcher, as he is joined by Dr. Yasmin Razack, author of “A Security Awareness Program for PCI DSS Compliance: Implementation and Legal and Ethical Issues to Be Considered”. In this episode, they will be addressing the challenges in implementing a security awareness program to fill this gap and the legal/ethical issues that needs to be considered during implementation. As per the Payment Card Industry – Data Security Standard (PCI-DSS) requirement 12.6, a Security Awareness Program is mandatory to be held at least once a year and for new hires. However, it is not an easy task and cannot be a one-time activity. But if implemented effectively, awareness programs can be the human firewall of the organization. It will make the organization compliant to regulations like PCI-DSS thereby protecting it from fines due to non-compliance, defamation, costs of data breaches and will help improve customer trust and loyalty. The Marine Corps' Talent Management 2030 document, released in November, recognizes the need to create a culture of inclusion and reinforce diversity to be successful in competition and conflict in the 21st century. It says, "Teams with diverse perspectives and modes of thinking solve problems faster and more creatively. In this way, diversity provides us a competitive warfighting advantage over our adversaries, particularly those who place a premium on uniformity of thought." Since 2012, Marine Corps Systems Command's Diversity Awareness Program, or DAP, has been enhancing our workforce's knowledge of and appreciation for diversity. On this episode, Manny chats with the Chair of Marine Corps Systems Command's Diversity Awareness Program, O'Bryan "OB" Woods. EDMR, Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing is a psychotherapy treatment that was originally designed to alleviate the distress associated with traumatic memories. Repeated studies show that by using EMDR therapy people can experience the benefits of psychotherapy that once took years to make a difference. It is widely assumed that severe emotional pain requires a long time to heal. EMDR therapy shows that the mind can in fact heal from psychological trauma much as the body recovers from physical trauma. How to create a course syllabus - Cybersecurity Awareness Program I share my screen in this episode, so you may want to check out the video version of this podcast at https://www.heathermonthie.com/how-to-create-a-course-syllabus-cybersecurity-awareness-program/ Download the Tech Teacher Toolkit here https://bit.ly/TechTeacherToolkit Join the Cyber Coffee Talk community to discuss more about your tech career! https://bit.ly/YourTechCareer https://www.youtube.com/embed/7boyMtTbLcQ How to create a course syllabus. So in this video, I'm going to show you how to create the course syllabus for a technical course, we're going to use a Cybersecurity Awareness course as an example. So if you are working in it, you worked in information security, you might be have been responsible for putting together a Cybersecurity Awareness Program for your company. And so you might have some experience putting together a course syllabus. So let's take what you already know, and maybe what you don't know. And let's talk about what it takes to put together a course syllabus for somewhat of a technical type of topic. So I'm going to share my screen with you here. And so the first thing we're going to do is we're going to think about the end in mind. So we're gonna have the end in mind. So what is it that we want our students, it might be employees, it might be whoever is purchasing your course. You know, what is it that we want them to do? So if we're going to create a Cybersecurity Awareness Program, we're just going to create one course for program in a in a Cybersecurity Awareness Program, you might have multiple courses. So but in this video, I'm just going to, we're just going to take one as an example. And we're going to create a course about fishing. Okay, so what we want to do is we want to think about what is the end in mind? What is it that we want our learners to either know, do or feel when they are finished with our course. Alright, so rather than give, you know, write a course about absolutely everything there ever could possibly need to know about fishing, it's really, you know, what is it that we want to learn to know how to do? So first of all, let's identify who our learners are to begin with. This is very important, because when you're talking about a topic like phishing, phishing is going to be very different for Cybersecurity Awareness training for you know, a receptionist somebody who works at accounting, you know, somebody like that, or somebody who is working in cybersecurity, and you're, they're trying, you're, you're showing them and you're, you're teaching them how to do investigative tasks that go with when when phishing emails come in, right? So it's, it's going to look very different. So you want to identify who your students are. So who are your students? So in this example, here, we're going to say it's employees of Acme Acme company, right? And we're going to say this is about a 500. person company, right? So those are my students. So I'm going to really just give them an overview of what is an awareness of phishing, right? So when they are finished with my course, what is it that I want them to? What is the transformation I want them to have had? So you can look at? What are they? What do you want them to know? What do you want them to do? Or what do you want them to feel or some combination of those three. So what I'm going to do here is say I want them to know how to identify a possible phishing email. And I want them to be able to this is the do be able to report a phishing email to the infosec. department. I can't type today when people are watching me, right. So we're going to use up the two things that I want them to do, you can really have as many as you need to have, for a course just know that the more sort of learning objectives, that's what these are, these are learning objectives, the more learning objectives you have,

Thanks again for tuning in, everyone! In this episode, I thought that we could begin by discussing prevention and detection methods used to understand your kidney health. I wanted to discuss a unique and flexible way to understand your kidney health in an everyday capacity! Today, join my guest - Ms. Monica Abou-Ezzi, former Vice President of the Kidney Disease Screening and Awareness program at Boston University and I as we discuss screening initiatives taken that we and many other special individuals continue to foster in local communities around the country.Monica’s Questions – 1.) What brought you to the fields of kidney and transplant medicine, respectively when you entered college?I actually had a family history of kidney disease. When I started college and found the Kidney Disease Screening and Awareness Program (KDSAP), internships and other opportunities through Boston Medical Center. I really like how it offers a window of opportunity to be a manageable disease and looking for different warning signs and lab results. I like the challenge.2.) What were the goals of the Kidney Disease Screening and Awareness Program? Who did we reach and how did we accomplish this?I like to think that this organization’s mission is simply, to serve. Earlier disease stages offer more option for treatment. We strive to catch kidney disease in its early stages and have prevention strategies to alleviate the financial, geographical or cultural concerns that potentially exist to having access to these methods of healthcare. We aim to go into communities and provide screening services to give you information that you need to keep your kidneys healthy.3.) Are there sessions and/or events that include or in addition to screenings to ensure that your mission is reached? The screening process entails preparation including training student volunteers in the different stations. This terminates with a physician consultation with volunteer physicians on site. They will have a medical history taken, urinalysis, BP measurement, blood glucose and BMI taken. Additionally, the program is run via fundraising in our communities (i.e bake sale) or educational events (i.e speaker series - physicians Q&A or patient perspective) and students who are interested in a pre-medical path via professional panels. 4.) Who can participate in this program? Who is the target audience and how do you go about the process of expanding?Currently, this is program run on undergraduate university campuses. It often starts with one student proposing the idea to start the organization on campus. Headquarters has prioritized nationwide outreach and we’re excited for the opportunities.5.) If you had one 5-minute window to speak with a screening participant, volunteer, new student or any other interested member of this organization, what would you say and why? With a participant, I would introduce myself and ask about their background and stress the importance of health in their lives. We urge you to come and get screened and to help us to help you. We stress to volunteers that they have to be flexible with the ability to help people and have an open mind.6.) How do you think we as a community can continue to perpetuate these messages? We want to stress health education or even signs of kidney disease to look out for. We want to coordinate volunteer efforts, provide easy information avenues or even gathering professional connections to begin your own screening efforts. On this week's The Sci-Files, your hosts Chelsie and Danny interview 2nd-year medical students at Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine, Brittany Ladson, Christian Rohl, and Basma Al Masraf. Since 2017, there have been over 70,000 opiate-related deaths, namely in the 18-25 year old group. It has been shown that implementing educational and Naloxone distribution programs can reduce the total number of opioid overdoses up to 55% within those communities. To address the growing opioid epidemic, Brittany, Christian and Basma are currently investigating the efficacy of implementing an opiate awareness educational program for high school students across the state. The DARE program, a current requirement for high schoolers in the state of Michigan, addresses the dangers of cigarettes and alcohol consumption; however, it fails to acknowledge opiate misuse. To address this gap in education, this team of medical students has held educational programs for over 250 students across the state. If awareness on the seriousness of opiate addiction could be addressed early on in a child's education, could it impact their decisions to misuse opiates? If you're interested in talking about your MSU research on the radio or nominating a student, please email Chelsie and Danny at scifiles@impact89fm.org. Join Host Adriane Michelle and Special Guest Arthur McFarlane, the great grandson of W.E.B. Dubois, as they talk about his legacy and the upcoming seminars taking place at Clark Atlanta University for the next 12 months. W.E.B. Du Bois is known for many achievements. He was the first African-American to graduate from Harvard, and he was cofounder of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). The NAACP's official biography presents Du Bois as a leader, Pan-Africanist, sociologist, educator, historian, writer, editor, poet, and scholar. “Du Bois's life and work were an inseparable mixture of scholarship, protest activity, and polemics,” the biography states. “All of his efforts were geared toward gaining equal treatment for black people in a world dominated by whites and toward marshaling and presenting evidence to refute the myths of racial inferiority.” McFarlane was educated at Stuyvesant High School in New York City, at the State University of New York at Brockport, and at the University of Colorado at Boulder. He has served as co-chair for the CDPHE Employee Diversity Advisory Committee and as treasurer for the Colorado Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action Coalition. He has been co-chair of the Board of Directors for the Rape Assistance and Awareness Program and Chair of the Board of the Colorado Coalition against Sexual Assault. He is a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity.

"Getting tough on crime" is a perennially attractive political stance, which usually translates into calls for more policing dollars and tougher sentencing. But these alone don''t stop people from committing crimes in the first place, and they don''t address what happens after arrests, convictions and sentences are served. Those who serve time in our jails come from communities in which they leave families, circumstances and associates behind, and they must eventually return to a community. When they do, things that the rest of us might take for granted can become impossible barriers. The realities of life after jail are unknown to most citizens who have not experienced them first-hand. But the cost of these realities is not just paid by those who go to and return from jail. Failure to consider effective crime prevention strategies or effective reintegration hurts families, friends, co-workers and the larger community. It costs us all. What are the "barriers" to public recognition of these costs, and of practical ways to do something pro-active about them? What are the public policy and community consequences of placing these matters "out of sight, out of mind?" Speaker: Gordon Leigh Gordon Leigh is Executive Director of the Lethbridge John Howard Society. He has many years of experience working first hand with those returning from prison to the community, as well as with changing policy and political priorities that have affected both prisoners and the communities they come from and return to. He has headed a number of local initiatives, including a Problem Gambling Prevention and Awareness Program for inmates and the Life Without Gambling program for the larger community. He is also the author of the best-selling The Law of the Land: A Criminal Code for Kids.
