Episode 67 – Rex Kudo is one of the most influential producers in modern hip-hop. His big break came when he co-wrote/produced Post Malone's “White Iverson”, and from there, he's worked with Lil Uzi Vert, A$AP Rocky, Juice WRLD, J. Cole, DJ Khaled, Skrillex, M.I.A., Mac Miller, Roddy Ricch, Future, Young Thug, The Weeknd, Trippie Redd, and has even produced alongside Rick Rubin. Lately, I've been spending more time with Rex, and I get the feeling he's becoming the next Rick Rubin. He's got this energy, this perspective on music and life that's just different. He's inspiring, community-driven, and one of the most genuinely good people in the game. But last month, he unfortunately lost his house and studio, burned down in the Pacific Palisades fires. Instead of letting it destroy him, he's kept moving forward with pure optimism for the future and realizing how lucky he already is. That really hit me. In this episode, we talk about his journey, his process, the hits, the lessons from working with legends, making new legends, and how he's pushing through one of the toughest moments of his life. Rex is one of those guys you just root for, and I'm stoked to share his story with you. Hope you dig this convo with the great Rex Kudo. ‘Go with Elmo Lovano' is a weekly podcast where Elmo interviews creatives and entrepreneurs in music on HOW they push forward every day, got where they are in their careers, manage their personal lives, and share lessons learned and their most important insights. “Jimmy is a great coach, loved him when he travelled to international training camps with Ireland, great pad man.” When you're getting praise like this from the notoriously hard-to-please Paddy Barnes, then you must be doing something right. And today's guest Jimmy Halpin has been doing something right for 40 years now. Before that, the young Dubliner had talent as a boxer but didn't quite manage to match that with a bulging collection of medals, with his last fight coming in 1981 when, three years out of the ring by then, he ‘got a hiding' when he returned for one night only on a benefit for the Stardust victims. However the lessons he learned still stand to him to this day. Jimmy is loved by his boxers and adored by other coaches, but he takes no bull either and his forthright honesty (or constructive criticism) sometimes leads to disagreements along the way. He trained Ireland's first female fighter (and first female world champion) Deirdre Gogarty when she first walked through the doors at St Saviours in Dublin, and taught double Olympic champion Kellie Harrington many of the moves that led to her topping podiums in Tokyo and Paris. Jimmy worked his magic with Cathal O'Grady, Darren Sutherland and Emmet Brennan - Olympians all - at club level and worked alongside Billy Walsh with the Irish high performance team for over a decade. Now, at 72, he's still giving back as a volunteer, touring clubs all over Dublin, mainly, and giving pointers to coaches and boxers alike. As he says, his mission was to create universal boxers before there was even a term for it. His passion for boxing is infectious and as Jimmy says, once you're in the club - whether you're a novice or a potential world champion - you're deserving of his time, and he'll strive to help you improve. As for the best fighter he worked with during his time in Ireland? I'll give you a clue - it's someone who's got the full set of medals, anyway. Hosted on Acast. I sat down with Billy Walsh, current USA head boxing coach and former Head Coach of the Irish Athletic Boxing Association (IABA) High Performance Team, to discuss the recent Olympics, his approach to performance and development, and the future of boxing in the Olympics in light of the McLaren report. Billy shares his thoughts on a range of subjects, in what is one of the most in-depth conversations with one of Ireland's greatest ever coaches. We touch on his preparation for the Olympics with the backdrop of the pandemic, his background in boxing and coaching in Ireland and some of the great boxers he coaches including Katie Taylor and Kellie Harrington. Billy's successes to date at European, World and Olympic level are unprecedented in the history of Irish Sport and he is carrying this into the USA setup. We also take detours into Elite Performance and how this can relate to excelling in business, the benefits of motivation and attitude, leadership and adapting to change. Hosted on Acast. John Joe Nevin is one of Ireland's greatest ever amateur boxers - and some would say THE greatest. He completed the full set of medals - two World Championships bronze (2009, 2011), European Championships gold (2013) and Olympic Games silver (2012). Along the way he put in some of the finest performances Irish boxing fans have ever seen, with the best undoubtedly his London 2012 semi-final win over Cuban world champ Lazaro Alvarez. Now he's set up his own club, Mullingar Shuffler Boxing Club, after the nickname former Ireland coach Billy Walsh gave him while marvelling at his exploits during those Games. Nevin's produced his first Irish champ - son Martin got the honour - so The Rocky Road paid him a visit down in Co Westmeath to discuss a career that started out with a hiding (he was eight, the other guy was 12) and ended up with him being No 1 in the world. On episode 149 I am delighted to be joined by Head Coach at Team USA boxing Billy Walsh. From humble beginnings in Wexford to becoming a world renowned coach and mentor, Walsh's journey is a testament to his passion for the sport and pursuit of excellence. Billy provides insights into managing an athlete in the ring, building the Irish High Performance boxing unit from sleeping on the floor of the gym to olympic gold medals and altering his accent for his new athletes in Colarado. He also offers a fantastic insight in managing and communicating with his athletes in the ring. As an athlete he competed in the 1988 Summer Olympics and has multiple Irish titles to his name. He began as Head coach of the Irish High Performance Boxing programme in 2003 and in 2016 was awarded IBA Coach of the year (Amateur). He moved to the USA and is now tasked with building the USA into a new boxing powerhouse. Billy was a joy to learn from and I thoroughly enjoyed our conversation. This week, Tommy is joined by actor Tanner Buchanan, best known for stealing the world's attention in his breakout role of Robby in the hit Netflix series, Cobra Kai. Cobra Kai is the sequel to the original Karate Kid films, and the sixth and final season is set to release later this year. But next up, Tanner can be seen in the romantic comedy How To Date Billy Walsh, out now on Amazon. Today, Tanner opens up about how he can relate to feeling misunderstood like his character Billy Walsh, how we all have multiple layers that make up who we are, why we shouldn't be defined by other people's perception of us, his journey of becoming comfortable in his own skin, why it's still hard to get used to seeing himself on a movie poster, what we can expect in the final season of Cobra Kai, how the filming process has been going over the last few months (hint: lots of Advil has been used), and how you too can master a slow motion walk.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In 2015 Billy Walsh was appointed Head Coach of USA Boxing, and was charged with returning the program to its prior glory. Our Great Coach on this 'best of' episode is Billy Walsh. Billy is the current head coach of the USA Boxing team. He started boxing at age seven in a Christian Brothers gym in Wexford Ireland. He went on to win seven Irish Senior titles, participated in European and World Championships and represented his country as a welterweight in the 1988 Olympics. He then transitioned into coaching and was appointed Irish Head Coach in 2003. He was the head coach for 12 years and from 2008 to 2014 the team won 7 Olympic medals, at that point it was 25% of all Olympic medals Ireland has ever won. In 2015 and again in 2016 he won the Amateur International Boxing Associations World Coach of the Year. In 2015 he was appointed head coach of USA Boxing, and was charged with returning the program to its prior glory. So far this century only 1 male and 1 female boxer has won gold at the Olympics this century, despite the fact that American boxing is the most decorated program in Olympic history and produced champions like Cassius Clay, Joe Frazier, George Foreman, Leonard, Spinks, and Oscar De La Hoya. In this episode of the podcast, I sit down with Derek Ahearn. Derek is a Level 2 IABA & 1-star AIBA Coach & an IABA / SPORTS Ireland Boxing Coaching Tutor. Derek was heavily involved in boxing from a young age and started coaching St Saviours in 2001 to 2016 travelling all over Ireland, France Russia Estonia & many trips to England with teams. Since 2015 Derek has been the head coach at DCU BC & has travelled to Sweden & England with teams. In 2018 Derek coached the Irish student team in the AIBA WORLD Student Games. We delve into how boxing, although proclaimed to be our most successful Olympic sport, has been In decline due to various factors that we go into in the podcast such as the IABA's split with high-performance coach Billy Walsh and current issues with funding. One of boxing's most important functions is giving people from disadvantaged backgrounds an avenue to excel. We discuss how sports Ireland have negated the societal benefits of boxing and have focused just on tangible successes like medals at elite competitions. As a result, funding has decreased leading to the closure of clubs across the country.
Our Great Coach on this episode is Billy Walsh. If you survived the year 2020, then please keep right on fighting for the survival of humans everywhere in the year 2021 and beyond! Lyrics: Prayed for mercy; it was a Hail Mary!Thank God, for His grace,So I’ll trust in Him.When I feel like I’m gonna sink,He shows me the way.Falling apart... what can I say? That I’ll trust in Him.Gave me the ability to feel,It still hurts, every day.By Him, we’re fearfully and wonderfully made too.Even when your world’s crashing and breaking apart,You can trust in Him!He taught me how to be bold:And, for that, I’m forever grateful. For His independent Spirit,I know I’m filled with His truths.Through Him, I’m made brand new, Cause His Holy One was once slain. He took it all upon Himself,All this world’s suffering.Remembered for the verse John 3:16,In the New King James. He handcrafted this earth,By vocalizing His identity.SmoothVelvet glove qualityWhoseLove is eternally patientSublime and spiritualInter-session and justiceSacrificed His Son for our freedom Ominipotent and omniscient too!Prayed for mercy; it was a Hail Mary!Thank God, for His grace,So I’ll trust in Him.When I feel like I’m gonna sink,He shows me the way.Falling apart... what can I say? That I’ll trust in Him. He’s praiseworthy!Pressed down, shaken together, and running over. His love is never envious or boastful. On this episode we are thrilled to have the comedian and co-host of the "Pod Yourself a Gun" Sopranos Podcast, my good friend Matt Lieb! We discuss the iconic Billy Walsh episode, in which the pretentious director wants to shoot a scene with Vince getting a blowjob from a guy. It's great and we had a ton of fun, although no one blew anybody. Here's the episode description: "Eric is concerned over the choice of director--an indie loose cannon named Billy Walsh--for Vince's new film. Meanwhile, Drama lobbies for a supporting role, while Ari finds he can't mix business with pleasure."

Physical trauma is, on the surface, much harder to stomach than any emotional pain. Imagine choosing between sparring a few rounds with a boxer compared to being called a few names. The choice seems easy. But, as an elite boxer watches cuts and bruises heal after a big fight, they say it's the emotional scars that can last a lifetime. Olympic bronze medallist boxer David Price has faced the worst of both. Price has suffered both internet abuse and brutal knock-downs. He admits to crying (in a positive way!) ahead of his last fight against Alexander Povetkin and argues that physical pain is much easier to handle than the mental. Plus, USA boxing coach Billy Walsh gives us some tips on how to stay in the best mental condition. Alfie Phillips Jr. had a tough act to follow. His father, Alf Sr., was an Olympian diver, a carnival showman and, despite taking up the game in his 40s, a provincial curling champion. In 1956, Ontario was poised to win the Brier for the first time since 1939, but Billy Walsh from Manitoba made what became one of the greatest shots in Brier history. Alfie joined up with his dad shortly after that loss, then later formed his own rink with John Ross, Ron "Moon" Manning and Keith Riley. In 1967 Alfie did one better than his father, winning the Brier in Hull, Quebec. The Phillips rink played a draw strategy that hadn't been seen before in Ontario, and one that left an impression on a another young member of the Parkway Curling Club, Paul Savage. We cover the big wins and losses and the battles over prize money and what it took to win over the Ontario Curling Association and their efforts to keep curling an "amateur" sport. Alfie shares the history of the Toronto Curling Mafia, tales of Hec Gervais, and gives us the definitive version of the famous bus story from the 1967 Scotch Cup in Perth, Scotland. For more on Alfie Phillips, check out "The Brier" by Bob Weeks. You can also read about his history with Conklin Shows. You can see the famous Billy Walsh shot against Alf Sr. at the 1956 Brier near the end of this video. YouTube also has video from Alfie's win at the 1967 Brier.

Designing websites in amongst the "suits" and their business models, targets, projections and synergies (ha!) can be death by dot point. Or fun. What are manager types actually thinking when they brief (or don’t) you. How do you translate their KPI’s into interface designs that 1. get their point across & achieve their targets 2. contribute to a profitable business 3. are easy to use (who would have thought the users get a say! ;-) Pete gets on their case, video camera in hand, to find out what they’re thinking. *Suits = managers/clients/executives. Dedicated to the Billy Walsh character in Entourage Pete has been designing web sites for about 10 years. Having previously worked as the Head of Design at Fairfax Digital and Creative Director at Daemon, he is now working at News Digital Media as the Group Interface Designer. Recently he has been designing carsguide, truelocal, & iphone.news.com.au. He works directly with site owners and execs (the suits!) to help inform requirements and push product design boundaries. He is daily knee deep in photoshop concepts and html/css code. Licensed as Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike 3.0 (http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/).
