Cystic Fibrosis and obesity?  Until recently this has not been a topic of conversation for the CF community. The reason for obesity in the CF community is better health and longer lives, so the concern is now a reality.  University of Michigan CF doctor, Carey Lumeng is researching the issue.  As he says in this podcast, researchers have a lot to learn about the connection between better health in CF and obesity.  We also talk about The Bonnell Foundation fellowship program. A few years ago we started the program to encourage doctors to work in the specialty field of cystic fibrosis. Dr. Lumeng is one of the doctors who oversees this program.Dr. Lumeng is the Frederick G.L. Huetwell Professor for the Cure and Prevention of Birth Defects and Professor in Pediatrics and Molecular and Integrative Physiology. Dr. Lumeng is the Division Chief of Pediatric Pulmonology at the C.S. Mott Children's Hospital and Associate Director of the Michigan MSTP Program. He grew up in Indiana and graduated from Princeton University in Molecular Biology. He received his PhD in Human Genetics and MD from the University of Michigan and completed residency training in Pediatrics in the Boston Combined Pediatrics Residency Program at Boston Children's Hospital and Boston Medical Center. He then completed fellowship training in Pediatric Pulmonology at the University of Michigan and started as faculty in 2006.  He runs a research lab focused on the health effects of obesity and the links between metabolism and lung health. The laboratory participates in both basic science and translational research projects in adult and pediatric obesity. He is funded by the NIH and the CF Foundation for new projects studying the changing causes of diabetes in people with CF.To contact the CF pediatric department (the Bonnell girls are pictured on this page): https://www.mottchildren.org/conditions-treatments/cystic-fibrosis-pediatric?pk_vid=6ff46bd2d38fe04c1739891353f5b28b Please like, subscribe, and comment on our podcasts! Please consider making a donation: https://thebonnellfoundation.org/donate/The Bonnell Foundation website:https://thebonnellfoundation.orgEmail us at: thebonnellfoundation@gmail.com Watch our podcasts on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@laurabonnell1136/featuredThanks to our sponsors:Vertex: https://www.vrtx.comViatris: https://www.viatris.com/en

RaeAnn Tucker joined Seth Parlier on Wake Up Tri-Counties to talk about what's happening with the Henry and Stark County Health Departments. January is National Birth Defects Month, and the 2025 theme is "Every Journey Matters." This nationwide initiative emphasizes making healthy choices to reduce the risks of birth defects. Pregnant women and those planning pregnancy are advised to take proactive steps such as consuming 400 micrograms of folic acid daily, managing pre-pregnancy weight, and updating vaccinations to promote the birth of healthy babies. Every 4 ½ minutes, a birth defect occurs in the U.S., prompting local health officials to advocate for awareness and preventive practices. First Choice Healthcare Clinics across Kewanee, Colona, Toulon, and Rock Island are making strides in community health through their comprehensive family planning services. These clinics provide crucial support, including annual physical exams featuring breast exams and pap smears, alongside contraceptive services and pregnancy testing. Designed to empower individuals to make informed health decisions, the clinics also assist in the early detection of other health issues, facilitating timely referrals to specialized care. Services are financially accessible, with a sliding fee scale for low-income families and available grant funds for eligible clients. To learn more or book an appointment, visit henrystarkhealth.com. The Henry & Stark County Health Departments, together with First Choice Healthcare, are urging residents to stay proactive about their health as the infectious season may continue until May. They are offering Pfizer's updated Covid-19 vaccines and seasonal flu shots for both adults and children over 6 months old at their clinics in Kewanee, Colona, and Toulon. For COVID-19 vaccinations, appointments are necessary and can be made by contacting the nearest First Choice Healthcare clinic. Flu shots for adults are available on a walk-in basis, while children's flu vaccinations require an appointment. The health departments also recommend regular hand washing, covering your nose and mouth when coughing, and staying home if sick to keep the community healthy during the festive season. For more information, call the First Choice Healthcare Clinics in Kewanee at 309-852-5272; Colona at 309-792-4011; and Toulon at 309-852-3115, or visit our website at www.henrystarkhealth.com; find them on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram at Henry and Stark County Health Departments.

Last week, the EPA made a surprising announcement, a first in forty years, in which they issued an immediate emergency ban on a pesticide called DCPA. Now, I know what you're thinking - wow, I'm glad they're actually pulling a harmful product off the market! It is cause to celebrate, but let's dig a little bit deeper. The unfortunate truth is that this pesticide has been used in the US since the 1950s and we've known about it's harmful effects since the 90s. So why did it take so long to ban DCPA? What is DCPA used for? And who in our population is most directly negatively affected by this pesticide? We're going to dig into all of the details on today's episode.   I also want to take you behind the scenes on how regulatory agencies, influenced by industry pressures, often prioritize manufacturers over public health. This is important information to have, even post-ban, because their are still tons of pesticides on the market that, frankly, should have been banned a long time ago. In this episode, we're chatting about:  Understanding DCPA as a chemicalThe EPA's delayed response and public pressureCalifornia's struggle with DCPAHow to protect yourself from harmful pesticidesIf you enjoyed this week's episode, please: Leave a positive review or rating wherever you listen Shop toxin free products on my Toxin Free Shopping Guide Download your free 25 Toxins to Avoid Post a screenshot, share what you loved, and tag me on Instagram @wendy_toxinfreeish Want to ask me a question to get answered on the podcast? Navigating the OB Healthcare System in the US: Episode #142

True Birth

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 13, 2023 38:35

Navigating the healthcare payor system in the United States can be a complex and sometimes overwhelming task. Understanding the intricacies of in-network and out-of-network insurance, as well as co-pays and deductibles, is crucial for making informed decisions about your healthcare. Here's a guide to help you through this labyrinth. Understanding Your Insurance Plan 1. In-Network vs. Out-of-Network: In-Network: These are the healthcare providers that have a contract with your insurance company. Visiting these providers generally means lower costs for you because they have agreed to charge negotiated rates. Out-of-Network: These providers do not have a contract with your insurer. Visiting them often results in higher charges and less coverage from your insurance. In some cases, insurance may not cover these visits at all. 2. Co-Pays and Co-Insurance: Co-Pay: This is a fixed amount you pay for a healthcare service, like $30 for a doctor's visit. It's typically paid at the time of the service. Co-Insurance: This is a percentage of the cost of your healthcare service that you pay after meeting your deductible. For example, if you have 20% co-insurance, you pay 20% of the cost of the service. Deductibles and Out-of-Pocket Maximums Deductible: This is the amount you pay for covered healthcare services before your insurance plan starts to pay. For instance, with a $1,000 deductible, you pay the first $1,000 of covered services yourself. Out-of-Pocket Maximum: This is the most you have to pay for covered services in a plan year. After you spend this amount on deductibles, co-payments, and co-insurance, your health plan pays 100% of the costs of covered benefits. Tips for Navigating the System Know Your Network: Always check if a provider is in-network before scheduling an appointment. Understand Your Benefits: Familiarize yourself with your plan's details, including co-pays, deductibles, and out-of-pocket maximums. Plan Ahead for Out-of-Network Care: If you must see an out-of-network provider, understand the costs and coverage limitations. Keep Track of Your Expenses: Monitor your out-of-pocket expenses, so you know when you've reached your deductible or out-of-pocket maximum. Appeal Denials When Necessary: If a claim is denied and you believe it should have been covered, don't hesitate to appeal the decision. Clinical care in private physician offices and hospital-owned practices can differ in several key aspects. Private physician offices are typically owned and operated by individual doctors or small groups of physicians. These settings often provide a more personalized experience, as the physicians may have a smaller patient base and can offer more individualized attention. The administrative processes in private practices are usually more straightforward, potentially leading to a quicker and more efficient patient experience. On the other hand, hospital-owned practices are part of larger healthcare systems. They often have access to more extensive resources, including specialized equipment and a broader range of healthcare professionals. These practices can offer a more integrated approach to care, especially for patients with complex health needs, as they have direct links to the hospital's services and specialists. However, this can sometimes come with a less personal touch and potentially more bureaucratic processes due to the larger system's structure. Conclusion Navigating the U.S. healthcare payor system requires patience and a good understanding of your insurance plan. By being proactive and informed, you can make choices that suit your healthcare needs while also managing your financial obligations. Remember, when in doubt, reaching out to your insurance provider for clarification can help alleviate confusion and ensure you make the most out of your healthcare plan.     Your feedback is essential to us! In the near future, birth defects, traumatic injuries, limb loss and perhaps even cancer could be cured through bioelectricity—electrical signals that communicate to our cells how to rebuild themselves. This innovative idea has been tested on flatworms and frogs by biologist Michael Levin, whose research investigates how bioelectricity provides the blueprint for how our bodies are built—and how it could be the future of regenerative medicine. Levin is professor of biology at Tufts University and director of the Tufts Center for Regenerative and Developmental Biology.
