Max Pearson presents a collection of this week's Witness History episodes from the BBC World Service. It's thirty years since the Oslo Accords were signed. This agreement in 1993 aimed to bring about peace between the Israelis and Palestinians. So this week, we're bringing you stories from Israeli and Palestinian history. We hear about attempts at peace - the secret talks behind the Oslo Accords, and President Bill Clinton's failed attempt to end the conflict at Camp David. Plus, one of the most dramatic sieges of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict that took place in a church. We also hear from a Palestinian and an Israeli who were there when rioting broke out in 2000, after the Israeli opposition leader, Ariel Sharon, made a visit to the al-Aqsa Mosque compound. And finally a hope of peace with the orchestra, made up of young people from both sides of the conflict, which performed a concert in the Palestinian city of Ramallah. Contributors: Mona Juul – Norwegian diplomat who was part of the team that planned and orchestrated the meetings which resulted in the signing of the Oslo Accords. Yolande Knell - Middle East Correspondent for BBC News. Gamal Helal - American diplomatic interpreter and policy adviser. Khaled Zeghari - Palestinian cameraman. Zalman Shoval - former Israeli ambassador to Washington. Carolyn Cole - photojournalist. Father Amjad Sabbara - Franciscan friar. Tyme Khelefi - former violinist with the West-Eastern Divan orchestra. Daniel Cohen - former violinist with the West-Eastern Divan orchestra. The Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem is on the site believed by Christians to be the birthplace of Jesus Christ. But in 2002, it was at the centre of one of the most dramatic sieges of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. For almost six weeks, Palestinian gunmen and civilians were holed up in the church. In 2015 Louise Hidalgo spoke to Father Amjad Sabbara, a Franciscan friar who lived in the compound, and to Carolyn Cole, an American photojournalist who managed to get inside the church in the last days of the siege. Carolyn Cole, a Pulitzer-Prize winning staff photographer for the Los Angeles Times, has covered wars and other conflicts in Afghanistan, Iraq, Israel, Kosovo, Liberia, Sudan, Nicaragua, Haiti, and the U.S.-Mexico border. Over the course of her 30 year career, she has been seriously injured on the job precisely once—when members of the Minnesota State Patrol pushed Cole over a retaining wall and pepper sprayed her so badly that her eyes were swollen shut. Cole was in Minneapolis in the summer of 2020 to cover the protests after the murder of George Floyd. She was wearing a flak jacket marked TV, a helmet, and carried press credentials at the time of her attack. Cole's story is not unique among the press corps. According to a new report out this week from the Knight First Amendment Institute called “Covering Democracy: Protests, the Police, and the Press,” in 2020, at least 129 journalists were arrested while covering social justice protests and more than 400 suffered physical attacks, 80 percent of them at the hands of law enforcement. As Joel Simon, author of the report and former Executive Director of the Committee to Protect Journalists, writes, “The presence of the media is essential to dissent; it is the oxygen that gives protests life. Media coverage is one of the primary mechanisms by which protesters' grievances and demands reach the broader public.”Lawfare Managing Editor Tyler McBrien sat down with Joel, as well as Katy Glenn Bass, the Research Director of the Knight First Amendment Institute, to discuss the report, the long legacy of law enforcement attacks on journalists covering protests in America, who counts as “the press” in the eyes of the court, and what can be done to better ensure press freedom. It's good to share, right? Growing up as kids we are told to share our toys and not be selfish. We also live in an age where discussing our feelings is encouraged. But when does it all become too much? With new crazes trending all the time, such as dance challenges and wearing a pillow as a dress, the question is: when can sharing become oversharing on social media? What is oversharing? The term has become associated with social media, but it isn't exclusive to this platform. Imagine you head to a party and you meet someone. Within five minutes they have divulged intimate details about their life. While some of us may try to escape these people, according to marriage therapist Carolyn Cole, this form of oversharing could come from a strong desire to connect with someone. But how does this translate to social media? Dr Christopher Hand, a lecturer in cyberpsychology, says the more details people disclose, the less sympathy we express when things go wrong. This could be due to a belief that we attract our own negative experiences the more we share them. It seems that sadfishing, the idea of searching for sympathy by oversharing, is generally perceived as negative rather than the cry for help it could actually be. However, Dr Hand's research also seems to suggest that the more we post on a platform, the more socially attractive we become – provided that the posts that we bang out are positive. Even back in 2015, Gwendolyn Seidman PhD, said that we should avoiding whining and being negative online. We should also steer clear of showing off, bragging or flexing, as it's now known – especially about our love lives. It makes sense – if your date is going ‘that well', would you really have time to share a photo with text? So, how can you know if you are oversharing? Well, why not ask your friends in real life. They would probably be more than happy to tell you if your posts about your breakfast or your gripes about your lack of money really are too much. 建立良好关系cyberpsychology 网络心理学disclose 公开,透露sympathy 同情心sadfishing 博同情,“卖惨”cry for help 大声求援,求助的表示post (动词)发布(信息)posts (名词)网站上公布的信息,帖子bang out 匆匆发出whining 抱怨,发牢骚showing off 炫耀bragging 吹嘘flexing 显摆,炫耀in real life 现实生活中

Come behind the scenes with actor and singer, Carolyn Cole, as she tells Janeen how performers make and keep friends, even while auditioning for the same roles. She explains why actors drop their physical boundaries onstage for the sake of the show, how she handles jealousy and competition, who her favorite princess to play is, and why finding something positive about every situation is so important to her well-being. We talk about body image, chronic complainers, growing up with all sisters, the role of faith in life, and how our mothers can be our best role models for learning we're valuable--but also learning that our siblings matter too, and we're not the center of the universe! Carolyn also shares her recommendation for getting to know your friends better, which is through the awesome game "We're Not Really Strangers" (affiliate link) by photographer and model Koreen. "We're Not Really Strangers is a purpose driven card game and movement all about empowering meaningful connections. Three carefully crafted levels of questions and wildcards that allow you to deepen your existing relationships and create new ones." Carolyn Cole experienced tragic events at a young age. After losing her brother when they were both teenagers, she knew she had to move forward and live a full life enough for the both of them. Yet even that was not enough and she needed to figure out why bad things happened to good people. After spending time in Isreal, she traveled to Greece and was kidnapped and the victim of a sexual assault. Her perpetrator strangled her and left her on the side of the road and fortunately she was found and brought to a hospital. She continued down the road of her life until the emotional scars of her traumas showed up in a long term relationship. Even to this day, Carolyn has never had anger towards her perpetrator. She came to a place of understanding where her trust issues came from. For nearly two decades, Carolyn was a Fortune 100 and Fortune 200 Senior Company Trial Attorney, and before that, she received her M.S. at the Johns Hopkins Carey Business School. Carolyn's motto is that business, personal and professional success should always meet happiness, and that's what she delivers through her work. Carolyn was selected to give a TEDx Talk in Florida, and she encourages other aspiring speakers and entrepreneurs to apply for such talks. As the host of the Boomtank Business Show podcast, she interviews experts who focus on self-improvement, confidence, motivation and the other tools people need to build a successful business. Carolyn shares with us her lived experiences that helped shape her and lead to the many different career trajectories that led her to be a substitute teacher, an attorney, a scholar on the human psyche, and ultimately a consultant and career coach for entrepreneurs and businesses. "The summer after college, I was at Island Records as a publicity video intern and I met their acts, I met different people, it was really cool! U2 came for lunch, different people popped in and out and I got to meet them and talk with them, but that summer in New York, I starved. I ate one salad a day, I walked blocks and blocks to get to their office which was one floor above Tower Records and one floor below where Keith Richards lived... I realized there is a concession to doing exactly everything you want at such a young age." Key takeaways: "It's absolutely insane that we at our young people in their teens, or early 20s, mid 20s and late 20s, even 30s and say, 'You have to decide right now where you're going to be for the rest of your life.' It's one of the insanities that we grew up with thinking that it's perfectly normal and it's not. As you grow and change and mature , and different experiences shape you, there are different things that come and different things you will want to explore." In today's episode of On The Spot, we had the opportunity to sit down with the dynamic duo Pavi Dinamani and Nammy Sirur, the creators behind The 9to5Misfits (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCoILG-stcFSS01XKgDEb9lg/featured), a YouTube channel helping women kick ass in their career and build their personal brand. They also co-founded Misfit Communications, (https://www.misfitcommunications.com/) a marketing and production company making videos for small businesses and entrepreneurs. Their aim is to build trust with their clients' audiences and expand their networks by focusing on personal branding and storytelling through video. In 2016, Pavi and Nammy became unemployed and decided to tell the world about it through their YouTube channel, The9to5Misfits. That's when they learned the power of storytelling, which inspired them to launch Misfit Comm. Prior to co-founding their business, Pavi worked as an oil & gas engineer. For Nammy, her groundbreaking moment happened in 2014 when she watched a TED talk that emphasized how most people stay at their jobs out of fear. "I was in Austin for about 6 months at this job that completely kicked my butt because I had gone from a corporate background to working at an agency and had never before done any creative work before even though I was good at it, it was a completely new way of working. It really taught me what my skills were and what my passion was. So when Pavi told me, 'Hey I got laid off,' it was a no-brainer for me because I was primed by that point to actually say 'Hey, I think I'm ready to be an entrepreneur and take the biggest leap of my life,' because I had taken all of these small leaps before that." --Nammy Sirur "Our first client is when we were like "Oh wait, we need to consider this as an actual revenue source and something to build." I don't think it was just because we made videos, it's because of the way we shared our stories, made ourselves look like heroes even though we were the losers, we didn't have a job [and that] really struck a chord with a lot of people." --Pavi Dinamani ICYMI: Make sure to check out Pavi and Nammy's On The Dot #WomanToWatch feature on our website OnTheDotWoman.com (https://onthedotwoman.com/woman/pavi-dinamani-and-nammy-sirur) and on our daily newsletter and podcast Four Minutes With On The Dot where we provide you with the tools and motivation you need to get out there and be the badass babe you were meant to be. In this Fast Take episode, I read the quick story of Joan of Arc to bring home how implausible her story was, but yet how true. It's important we remember, "the most extraordinary" is possible. Today's guest is truly amazing. She is a global 'Power Connector' and author of the top business book, "How To Be A Power Connector: The 5 + 50 + 100 Rule for Turning Your Business Network into Profits." -- Inc.com named her book the top business book of 2014 and Darren Hardy’s Success Magazine named it a must read book on its 2017 list of top books for achieving success. Learn the massive business piece missing from most entrepreneurial training. It's this … build a power network where you can help others and which can help you both, accelerate your business and profits. She’s known globally as "The Woman With The Titanium Digital Rolodex” and she delivers “titanium” in this interview. We talk about her incredible back story, how she built her power circle, what it takes to do it, how you can do it (especially if you think you’re shy) - and the difference between men and women in terms of power connecting and networking. We also talk high level business funding and an "angel ecosystem" waiting for you. She covers Angel Investors, Venture Capital Investors, Crowdfunding, “Family Offices”, Shark Tank, Artificial Intelligence and the fact there is $369 trillion dollars in global private wealth out there waiting for business investment opportunities. As she says, there is no lack of money. There is no lack of resources. She also says persistence and grit will get you much further than IQ. Marshall your grit and "scrappiness". Just keep going. And if somebody tells you "no", she says, “Yell Next!” There are many other people out there who will be happy to help. In this Boomtank Book Talk episode, I talk about two books: W. Chan Kim, Renee Mauborgne 's Blue Ocean Strategy, How To Create Uncontested Market Space and Make the Competition Irrelevant and Wallace Wattle's The Science of Getting Rich (which is really not a book so much about money as much as it is about living a full, meaningful, rich life). The first book was first published in 2005 and has sold over 3.5 million copies. It is an Amazon Best Seller. The other was published in 1910 and is a business and personal development classic. Nearly one hundred years apart, the authors all stress the need to create something new in business versus competing with existing businesses, industries and trends to win in the future. The dominant business model we see around us is "competition". If you are struggling with your business, why not embrace a Blue Ocean Strategy and create something new, that's not in existence today? - Tune in an enjoy! https://www.boomtank.com/ P.S. What does exploring your next level mean? I'm not crazy about using the “f” word, which is “failure” – but let’s go with it. Is failure real or is it a pure correction - to change your direction. Oprah says failure is feedback. It points you on the correct path. How true. She says there is no such thing as failure and countless entrepreneurs and entrepreneurial authors say the same. We need to go a bit deeper. I am going to ask you a novel question. Are things not working because you are playing too small? What if, the powers that be – for me you know it’s God – are not parting the seas for your business choices or actions the way you like. Could it be because you are choosing to remain small and invisible? What if, you will only receive the divine support you seek, once you start playing in the realm where you should be appearing? Something to ponder. Tune in and enjoy! www.boomtank.com

In this Friday Fast Take episode, I talk about the power of your voice. The power of your voice is something you realize only when you use it. Introverted, extroverted or somewhere in between, we all must use our voice to promote our businesses, our causes and our particular brand of help. Actually practice speaking and/or writing more about what really matters to you, what you can teach, how you can help - and learn to be free of the good opinion of others (as Maslow said). Do not let the noise of others’ opinions “drown out your inner voice” and your outer voice. Speak, write – whatever it is you should be doing and do more of it daily. The more you do it, the easier it gets and the more confident you become. Get out there and have your messages heard! Remember, it’s your mission. Use your voice to live it. - Tune in and enjoy! www.boomtank.com

In this episode, I salute Mega Business Coach Ali Brown and her “State of the Union” address, for online businesses. This episode is not an interview, but rather a salute to Ali for two of her recent Glambition podcast show episodes. If you do business online, this is important and a must listen. Things have changed in how business is done online and we all must respond to that change. Even Ali is charting a new direction. The old ways are not working, or at least not working as well as they once did. Ali has a warning call and a remedy for what she terms “the launch bubble”, which she predicted two years ago would happen and she was right. It is happening now in the online business space. She likens it to the “housing bubble” of recent memory. Ali's first episode is titled, "Stop the Online Insanity!", Glambition Episode 105. The second is titled, "Bold Ways to Break Away From the Pack", Glambition Episode 109. I quickly summarize these episodes, with some additional thoughts of my own. In this episode of the Boomtank Business Show, I interview Soness Stevens a leading, international TED Talk Coach living in Japan. Her Japanese clients have a 100% acceptance rate to TED and TEDx talks in Japan. Her global clients have a crazy high TED and TEDx talk acceptance rate of 85% for talks around the world. This interview is for those of you interested in public speaking and perhaps even, giving your own TED or TEDx talk. Ted speakers are chosen if they offer a unique perspective and/or fresh new idea to the world. Soness says Chris Anderson, largely viewed as the founder of TED Talks, believes “Everyone has an idea worth spreading.” What's yours? In this interview, Soness takes you through the “5 Wise Why’s” to figure that out. This is highly valuable TED Talk coaching. We cover a lot of ground. Keep in mind, TED Talks are not here to build your brand and business. They are not a pitch. They exist solely to promote ideas. That said, an understandable byproduct of giving a TED Talk is the resulting launch effect it can have for you, your brand, your business and potentially your speaker career, if that’s a focus for you. - Tune in and enjoy! - www.boomtank.com

On May 10th 2002, one of the most dramatic sieges of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, at the Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem, finally came to an end. For almost six weeks, Palestinian gunmen and civilians had been holed up in the church, on the site where Christians believe Jesus Christ was born. Witness talks to Father Amjad Sabbara, a Franciscan friar who lived in the compound, and to Carolyn Cole, an American photojournalist who managed to get inside the church in the last days of the siege.
