Margaret Maria is a wonderful cellist who's a unique composer. Her compositions are all written by layering cello lines in some gorgeous and emotive aural tapestries. Her personal story is interesting and moving: she started the cello as a teenager, was admitted to the University of Toronto at age 16 without graduating from high school, and was then admitted to the prestigious Curtis Institute. She went on to have a successful career as a member of the Vancouver Symphony and then Canada's National Arts Centre Orchestra, which is how I came to know her. She gave up her job with the NAC after a few years, and embarked on a new life as a composer, meanwhile continuing to teach. Some of her work as an educator has been with the Orkidstra program, which she has been involved with since it's inception in 2007. It's a social development program that serves over 650 youth from over 62 linguistic and cultural backgrounds by building community through free music programs. Episode Notes Give thanks, and celebrate the magic of the Holiday Season. We had a very successful show with fundraisers and event announcements that listeners clamored for more. Join us to hear and share what holiday surprises await us this season. Cheryl Cumings and Donna Brown join us to catch us up with where our Guides and Explorers are. Bring your questions for these dynamic Mentoring Team members.
What is the impact of advertising on people who are blind? How has the inclusion of a few blind people in ads changed things? How do people with some vision fare in ads. During this hour we will explore just how much we are viewed as consumers or objects of political correctness. During the second hour we will consider mentoring. One of the more exciting new projects unveiled during our convention this summer in Omaha Nebraska was the Mentoring, Access and Peer Support Program (MAPSP). This program created partnerships between "guides" and "explorers". In more traditional programs these folks might have been known as mentors and mentees. Initially, the first iteration of this exciting program was to last a year. During that time, a support team would oversee how the program works and perhaps make decisions about how things should change during what it is hoped will be a second iteration next year. Full disclosure means I should tell all of you that two of us on Tuesday Topics are Guides. We will have some of the members of the team on Tuesday Topics and perhaps some guides and explorers as well. We will explore how the program is going and give you, our listeners, an opportunity to raise questions about how the program works. I am sure that Kenneth Semien Sr. will be there and suspect that Cheryl Cumings, Donna Brown and Donna Browning will also be there! So far the program is only a couple of months old. How was it set up? What are its goals? What do participants think? How does the leadership team feel? Explore with us a new and promising program while it is being implemented. A new Short Story from The Casket of Fictional Delights – ‘The Eccentric Tourist' by Donna Brown a guest author read by . A philosophical and reflective tale. The post Short Story – The Eccentric Tourist appeared first on The Casket of Fictional Delights.
Law enforcement officers are tasked with a difficult mission that, different from so many other professions, causes them to be exposed to the risk of trauma, injury, or even death. Often, the public is unaware of acts of selflessness, courage, resilience and heroism by those who dedicate their lives to protecting and serving their communities. In this episode of Policing Matters, host Jim Dudley speaks with Donna Brown, a 26-year veteran of the Tallahassee Police Department in Florida who since her retirement, has dedicated herself to chronicling acts of officer heroism. Donna is the author of the Behind and Beyond the Badge series, which helps drive negative conversations around policing toward a positive outlook on law enforcement. Volume I was published in 2017 and won two gold medals in the Florida Authors and Publishers (FAPA) International book awards contest. Donna Brown graduated from Florida State University with a bachelor of science in criminology in 1979. A few months later, she was hired by the Tallahassee Police Department, one of only five women on the force at the time. Her assignments were patrol officer, field training officer, training unit, patrol sergeant, FTO sergeant, detective bureau where she supervised the burglary/financial crimes unit, sex crimes unit, victim advocate unit and 10 years supervising the homicide unit. Sgt. Donna Brown retired after 26 years of service. This episode of the Policing Matters Podcast is sponsored by Polco. On September 19, 1998, Donna Brown was closing a Taco Bell in Adel, GA after her second day on the job. As she left, she was robbed and fatally shot. Two witnesses, one a jailhouse snitch and one a respondent to a $5000 reward, implicated Devonia Inman. Despite their subsequent recantations, several alibi witnesses and an obvious other suspect, Devonia was convicted of capital murder and sentenced to life without parole. The real perpetrator went on to kill two others. Ret. Homicide Sgt. Donna Brown talks about her career and many of the great cops that are in her book, Behind and Beyond the Badge.
Devonia Inman's exoneration was the culmination of decades of work, first by the Georgia Innocence Project, which secured DNA evidence pointing to another suspect, and then by former Georgia State University law professor Jessica Cino and bro bono attorneys with the Atlanta firm Troutman Pepper. After spending most of his adult life behind bars, Inman, now 43, faces a long road to realizing a future that was derailed by his wrongful conviction. His release also leaves open the question of whether anyone will be held accountable for the 1998 murder of Donna Brown. If you'd like to support our work, go to theintercept.com/donate — your donation, no matter what the amount, makes a real difference. A long-awaited hearing reveals bombshell evidence buried in the files of Devonia Inman's former attorney. After 20 years in prison for a murder he insists he did not commit, Devonia returns to court for an evidentiary hearing that could finally help him prove his innocence. Testimony reveals that the state hid evidence tying Hercules Brown to the 1998 murder of Donna Brown, and that Devonia's trial lawyers dropped the ball — sitting on information that could have cleared him years ago. In a rare move, the presiding judge signs an order that could change the case forever. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

This application-based technology is a must have for your organization. Check out their link at www.cjevolution.com Such and honor to have Donna Brown on the show. She is a successful author, speaker and retired Police Sergeant. In Donna's own words. I had an idea for a book for quite some time but never chose to put "pen to paper" until 2017. "Behind and Beyond the Badge" was born out of passion for all of the good, honest and hardworking law enforcement officers who put on the uniform each day. And that goes for all first responders. The book took two gold medals in nonfiction at the Florida Authors and Publishers Presidents Book awards, a national competition. With that and the overwhelmingly positive feedback I received I decided to write Volume II. People don't know what it's like to do the job but they truly want to know more. The books are a collection of stories about individuals who have done or are doing the job. Police officers, firefighters, dispatchers, EMTS/Paramedics, crime scene technicians and victim advocates. They have truly opened their hearts to let people in and talk about "the good, the bad and the ugly." Their stories might surprise you. In 2018, Volume I won gold medals in two non-fiction categories in the Florida Authors and Publishers President's Book Awards, a national competition. In 2019, Volume II was a finalist in Non-Fiction:True Crime in the International Book Awards and won two medals in the Florida Authors and Publishers President's Book Awards in Non-Fiction and Political/Current Events. Both Volume's are now available on Amazon and Barnes and Nobles in eBook, paperback and hardcover. Visit behindandbeyondthebadge.com for reviews and excerpts! Donna and I hit on a lot of different topics in the law enforcement realm. From the challenges law enforcement faces, to developing the proper mindset. Such a great show. Donna Brown spent 26 years with the Tallahassee (FL) PD and retired in 2006 as a sergeant. She received the department's award for bravery and the Inagural Commander and Chiefs Award. She graduated from Florida State University in 1979 with a Bachelor of Science in Criminology and she was hired at TPD in 1979. She was one of only 5 women at the time at the department. Episode Notes November 2017, life changed in the most amazing way! I went to Smithtown, Long Island and was matched with my first guide dog. Boaty is a phenomenal Black Lab who is not only my guide but the best thing that has happened in my life. The Guide Dog Foundation who turns 75 this year was the school who gave a shot to a guy who had less than 2 years independent mobility but who's very life hinged on a successful match. Fast forward these 3 years and I have such appreciation for the school that helped me really grab life and pull myself back to a life that is full and productive. I have tremendous respect for the process and all of the schools and thousands of people who work so hard to make these programs successful. This week I want to deep dive into the first 2 years of a guide dog life!! Eric and Holly have raised 4 amazing dogs starting with Boaty. When I stepped onto the campus in Long Island I could never have imagined that I would become a member of another amazing family. Join Sunday Edition as we welcome Eric, Holly and Nancy. Nancy is the person Holly and Eric's second guide went to. She has become a sister of sorts being the human who loves and is in care of one of the dogs Holly and Eric have raised. We are a family unto ourselves and I am happy to welcome them and share their parts of the process. Lauren Berglund graduated from Iowa State University with a degree in Child, Adult, Family Services. She has past experience in higher education disability services and vocational rehabilitation services. Lauren is the Consumer Relations Coordinator at the Guide Dog Foundation and America's Vetdogs, sister non-profit organizations that place guide and service dogs with veterans, first responders, and individuals who are blind or have other disabilities. The Guide Dog Foundation and America's Vetdogs were the first assistance dog programs in the United States to be dually accredited by the International Guide Dog Federation and Assistance Dogs International. Through her position Lauren empowers program graduates and applicants through a combination of strong multi-channel direct phone support and referral services, creation of high value and informative content, and engaging in strategic public outreach and education efforts to key stakeholder originations. Douglas Wiggin is the Field Rep for the Guide Dog Foundation. The area he primarily works is the New England area, as well as Florida, Mississippi, and Part of Canada. He has been with the Foundation for 31 years. He has lived in Maine for almost 14 years now. He was a resident instructor for about 16 years and now a field rep for about 15 years. As a Field Rep parts of his are Interviews, aftercare, home placements, residential placements, agency visits, and re certification of our Vet dogs. So we will spend the first hour of Sunday Edition going thru the life of a Guide Dog from birth to the successful matching and growing as a team. These are interesting times we are living. In March all of our lives were disrupted. Now as states open up and the film/tv industry tries to find a new normal, I wanted to know what fellow creatives had been doing to stay creative during quarantine. In the next several episodes you will hear from actors, a school receptionist, a poet, and a teen. Each of them giving some insight into how they dealt with quarantine and the loss of their normal routines. In today’s episode I talk to Alison Haselden, who is an actor, a marketing consultant, and host of the podcast It’s a Slate of Mind. She has found that during this time she has had to adjust her thinking and be OK with her reduced list of things to do. Alison has found that she is having to “fight less with herself.” She also has fallen back on trusting her intuition more on a daily basis. My second guest Laurin Christian, an actor and mental health advocate, has watched movies ranging from Midsommar to Ghostbusters and listened to music while dancing in her kitchen. Through these activities she has found herself often inspired by the acting, the stories, and/or the music. My last guest on this episode is Donna Brown who works at the front desk of a charter school. She has used her downtime at home to forge lasting friendships through TikTok. Her favorite thing to do is duet with someone and, she says, she has found the TikTok community to be incredibly supportive of her creative endeavors. For her, it isn’t about the number of followers that she can get, it’s about making someone smile. Enjoy this first episode of Creativity in the time of COVID. We all like to live a healthy life, but from the time we get a little stuck, what can we do to fix this, our Roger asks if he is helping himself by daily exercise and walking through forests etc. Donna will offer you some top tips and advice, it's well worth a listen, so go on a give it a go.
Frank and Patrick welcome their first guest in season 2, Donna Brown. How the world can change in a very short period of time! I’ve been absent from the Podcast for the past 3 weeks as I was feeling a little discombobulated. I did not want to “add to the noise” online, I wanted to contribute to the conversation instead. So, I allowed myself for these last 10 days or so, just to feel the feels” before I was ready to share with you again. I’ve now gathered some initial thoughts and would love to share the concepts of conscious choices in times of change with you. Show Notes We need to allow our emotions, all of our emotions. IN the Recover Movement we all this “feel, deal, heal”. Whatever comes up for us, we need to experience it to move through to the other side. There's nothing to be gained by pushing it down, or avoiding our emotions or anything like that, because they will come back and demand to be hear! Whatever feelings you've been experiencing, I hope you can move yourself this space where you can simply allow yourself to feel them because none of them are wrong. Brene Brown talks about the FF T's - the effing first time, and this is certainly a FFT for most of us. There isn't a rulebook, there's nothing that we can turn to that says, “here’s the way to handle this”. So all we can do is “Google inside”, I guess, to work out what this new normal means to us. If you are a solo micro small business owner, what does it mean for your business going forward? What do you need to do now, next and later? I believe as we move through and out of this situation, we're going to be connecting even more deeply to meaning and purpose going forward in response to the recognition of how deeply important connection to other people is, how deeply important being of service to others is, and how deeply important adding value to the world is. It’s time to be a Lighthouse and an Anchor for your clients, to be, as my colleague and friend Donna Brown says, a refuge for your clients, a safe space to be away from the turmoil. Many brands have tended to rely on fear to sell and position themselves, using FOMO (fear of missing out) to close sales. This never really was appropriate but now it’s not at all! It’s really important for our economy to stay as a river and not a pond and we can contribute by continuing to invest in different ways. A pond that has no movement becomes stagnant, becomes a swamp. We do not want that for our businesses or for other people's businesses as well. A river may not be possible right now, perhaps think of it as a stream. What small investments can you still make to keep things moving? It’s not business as usual, we’re not moving full speed ahead with all the same messaging and activities as we had before this pandemic. That doesn't feel right. But neither does hiding. So pause and ask yourself, what does Conscious Visibility look like for you? And then do that. Now consider Conscious Observation - the power of example. What are other people doing in your space or in the business world at the moment? What makes you go aha, there's an idea, how might that work for me? This is about looking for inspiration. And now look at Conscious Connection. How can you collaborate and co create with other people at the moment? And finally, Conscious Kindness. Wherever possible, work with kindness, kindness to yourself, and kindness to others wherever possible. In any given situation that you're facing that is difficult, or that is threatening or that is scary or, or unusual, uncertain, pause and ask yourself, what would love to do in this situation? What would love do? The discussion continues in the Your Next Chapter Community - come and join us!

According to the historic record of the NH Bar Association, the first woman admitted to the New Hampshire Bar Association was Agnes Winifred McLaughlin admitted in 1917. But McLaughlin was NOT the first woman lawyer practicing in New Hampshire. That honor, and the shoulders upon whom all women attorneys stand belong to a woman named Marilla Marks Young Ricker. Learn about this extraordinary woman's career as a lawyer and advocate for the poor and downtrodden, and hear NH's recipient of the Marilla Ricker Award Attorney Maureen Raiche Manning interviewed about the honor. Today almost anyone from NH can name dozens of exceedingly fine women lawyers. Jean K. Burling, was the first female judge in NH in 1973. Attorney Linda S. Delianis was first appointed to the NH Superior Court and then served with distinction as NH's first female Chief Justice of the NH Supreme Court. Today Associate Justice Carol Ann Conboy from the NH Supreme Court carries on the tradition of service. Landya Boyer McCafferty (born September 19, 1962) is the Chief United States District Judge of the United States District Court for the District of New Hampshire. She is the first female judge to serve in the District of New Hampshire. Even today one cannot miss the impact that Kelly Ayotte (1993): First female Attorney General of New Hampshire (2004-2009) continues to have, now in the political arena. • Emily Gray Rice (1984):[11][12] First female to serve as a U.S. Attorney for New Hampshire (2016) Bar Associations[edit] • • Patti Blanchette and Susan B. Carbon:[13][14] First females to serve respectively as the President of the New Hampshire Bar Association (1992-1993; 1993-1994) • Maureen Raiche Manning:[15] First female to serve as President of the New Hampshire Women's Bar Association (1998) • And there are scores of others: Tina Nadeau, Ellen Arnold, whom I first met when she was counsel to the New Hampshire Senate and has represented Dartmouth College among others, Leslie Nixon, Cathy Green, Donna Brown, Congresswoman Ann McLane Kuster, • • All of these remarkable women stand on the shoulders of one extraordinary woman named Marilla Ricker of New Durham, NH. Who was never formally recognized by the NH Bar Association, though she practiced Law in New Hampshire for the latter part of her life by special dispensation from the NH Supreme Court often in partnership with other NH Attorneys. • • Anyone who met Marilla as a very young child would have recognized that here was a person who would leave her mark. When doors open, always walk through. I love when things happen like this as a surprise, never expected. This is how I met Donna Brown. She had left a comment on a podcast I was on which sparked my interest and so I invited her to have a conversation together. The more we spoke, the more I felt something and I just knew I had to invite her to be a guest on my podcast. The thing I liked most about her was her ability to reinvent herself, each time at a high level of reinvention. She has worked as a designer for a major fashion brand, then moved to a home textile and home furnishing designer to a garden designer. she has had he own TV Miniseries, wrote blog fo large publications in Italy and has authored 2 books and she created a healthier style of gelato. She is now working now with people who have online businesses - finding their unique business model, not just USP. Positioning and scaling Walking Compassion started as a personal journey but has become a movement of sharing healing with others. She is creating retreats, vision quests, and walking retreats for people to leave what troubles them behind. In our podcast, we spoke of: - the trial of a painful divorce - the annotate for being stuck - and her life changing walk along the Camino de Santiago. Donna Brown is a business mentor, creative, motivational speaker and seeker. She loves to inspire and provoke with new ideas through developing a new definition and understanding of business as a tool to support your highest personal and spiritual growth. Donna is the founder of Walking Compassion, a global movement for the development and practice of great compassion. Property markets responded positively, as did the banks, but what effect will the looming interest rate cut have on confidence? Australia is mad about coffee, it's an $8 billion industry. More than a third of Aussie coffee drinkers admit to knocking back 5 or more cups a day! Coffee pods have exploded in popularity thanks to the bang for the buck. A pod creates a coffee almost as good as your local barista but at a fraction of the price. Husband and wife duo Trent Knox and Julie Tink founded St Remio coffee, their pods are available at Coles and are compatible with several leading machines. Additionally, at the centre of the business is a core belief in sustainability and giving back to the ladies of Rwanda who dedicate their lives to growing the beans us Australians have become obsessed with. Donna Brown has always been deeply committed to helping people be the best they can be in her 30+ years of work in design, media and business. By digging below the surface, she has helped individuals and business leaders lean into purpose by honouring their interests, talents and natures and having them consciously decide “what do I want my life to look like”. An upcoming milestone birthday and the contemplation that often brings, combined with a desire to integrate her spirittal practices more deeply with her work led Donna to developing The Walking Compassion Project, a personal pilgramage to the Camino Trail, carrying the collective troubles of 100,000 people in one symbolic stone, to be let go. A journey at the pure intersection of contrbution and fulfilment, she knows the ripple effect of the project, externally and internally will be profound.

After the new evidence comes to light, we look back at the investigation into the murder of Donna Brown. And share some information we didn’t quite know what to do with. Information about some key players who we know shaped the outcome of this case. Players we still have questions about. One is an elusive police detective with a bad reputation. The other is a witness we’ve talked about before. Or maybe she’s a suspect. It’s hard to tell.
A murder in the small southern town of Adel, Georgia, sent Devonia Inman to jail 20 years ago. He was accused of robbing and shooting a woman named Donna Brown in a Taco Bell parking lot. He swore he was innocent and there were good reasons to believe him. And while he awaited trial, three more brutal killings took place in Adel. Did police get the wrong man?
