Are you overwhelmed by the financial side of your business? In this episode, Patti Mara speaks with Colin Sanburg, founder of FinElevate, about the rise of fractional CFOs and how they empower entrepreneurs to focus on their strengths. Discover how these experts streamline financial operations and drive profitability, transforming challenges into opportunities for growth. Here's some of what you'll learn in this episode:The key criteria that FinElevate looks for in an ideal client. Why some entrepreneurs don't want to give up signing authority. The importance of identifying your dashboard KPIs.The entrepreneur motivation for freeing yourself up.What inspires Colin the most about being an entrepreneur. How to overcome analysis paralysis. Show Notes: If an entrepreneur isn't closely monitoring their financials, they're likely just wasting time. No matter how skilled you are in a specific area, you need outside perspective. Not every aspect of business suits every entrepreneur. People are happy to offload parts of their businesses that they don't like working in. A better understanding of your metrics can help you structure your business for increased productivity. The right players want the metrics of success because they want to win. Taking action does tremendous things for your psyche. Top team members are unlikely to stay if they can't access accurate metrics to evaluate their performance. You can't be your own sounding board. The only sustainable way to build an entrepreneurial business is to base it on the entrepreneur's strengths and weaknesses. Much of the financial aspect of your business relies on discipline. People are more likely to engage with a clear reflection of their hard work. If you measure it, you can manage it. If you can manage it, you can improve it. If a team member sees a disconnect between lead measures and lag measures, they'll disengage completely. Once you focus on a small set of key metrics, you'll be surprised at how much more efficient you become. Resources: We Choose Local FinElevate Unique Ability® Who Not How by Dan Sullivan and Dr. Benjamin Hardy The Obstacle Is the Way by Ryan Holiday The Gap And The Gain by Dan Sullivan and Dr. Benjamin Hardy Blue Ocean Strategy by W. Episode 73: Special Guest - Dr. Lem Usita   Summary: In this episode of the Rising Tide Leadership Podcast, host Mo interviews Dr. Lem Usita, an entrepreneur and leadership expert. They discuss Dr. Lem's leadership experience and how he defines leadership. They also explore the obstacles he has faced in his leadership roles and how he overcame them. Dr. Lem shares his early influences and the catalyst for his intentional leadership development. He emphasizes the importance of mentorship and surrounding oneself with a supportive team. The episode concludes with Dr. Lem's recommended reading list and his final thoughts on leadership.   Takeaways: Leadership is not easy and comes with challenges and obstacles that must be faced and overcome. Surrounding oneself with a supportive team and mentors is crucial for personal and professional growth. Leadership development requires self-reflection and a willingness to address weaknesses and areas for improvement. Reading books on leadership and learning from other leaders can provide valuable insights and strategies for effective leadership. Facing Obstacles: Every leadership role has its dark side. Organizational culture. Sometimes you jump into a role and there were other people in that role before you Others tell you how to do things Lack of resources Inherit problems It's a cop out to blame the organization for the obstacles. As the leader, it's my responsibility to lead the organization no matter what situation they're in.  I need to know what my weaknesses are and I need to shore up my weaknesses in order to lead this organization.  The responsibility is on the leader.   “If I am not leading well or if I don't lead these folks well, it impacts their family, it impacts their kids. And it might even impact the generation.” When you start thinking and reading and researching and studying leadership, then you're able to:Change your behavior Change your practices Change your habits  Every leader can teach you those two things:Things that you want to do Things you don't want to do Surround yourself with people:Mentors Those who walk alongside you  Business resourcesCPA, Attorney, etc    Lem's Final Thoughts:  Lead out of who you are. You lead out of your personality, you lead out of your history, you lead out of your family sculpture, family of origin stuff, you lead out of your trauma and pain, you lead out of your weaknesses, and you lead out of your strengths. And if you're not doing the work of getting to know yourself, you're not growing your effectiveness as a leader, you just aren't. And so it takes courage and humility to do this work—to become better because it's facing yourself and making some huge changes and that takes courage and humility to lead yourself so that you can lead and be effective as a leader.    Amazon Book Link: Power vs. Force: The Hidden Determinants of Human Behavior, Daivd Hawkins. - https://a.co/d/03N27ma    Unreasonable Hospitality: The Remarkable Power of Giving People More than They Expect, Will Guidara - https://a.co/d/eyo9HqM    Blue Ocean Strategy, Expanded Edition: How to Create Uncontested Market Space and Mak e the Competition Irrelevant, Roger Wayne, W. Her research distinguishes between excellence and the extraordinary, and between incremental innovation vs. the outer reaches of radical innovation - paradigm creation. Dr. Thiel focuses in particular on the mindsets and behaviors that enable the creation of the extraordinary, the creation of new paradigms and outliers that challenge our notion of reality, or our notion of what's possible. But how can this notion of excellence vs. the extraordinary be applied to the world of Fine Wine? To find out, tune in! More about today's guest Dr. Kiko Thiel: Kiko Thiel researches, writes and speaks about the difference between excellence and the extraordinary, and the journey individuals undergo when they depart from the status quo to create a new paradigm. When you think about innovation, you probably also think about disruption. Innovation in many people's minds is about creating a better solution that makes an old one obsolete. This means that it's inherently a competitive and finite thing - someone wins, and another person loses. But what if we didn't have to think of innovation in that way? What if innovation could be something other than disruptive? That's what today's guest Renee Mauborge argues is not only possible, but necessary. Standing out from the competition is necessary to attract new customers and maintain business growth, but are your current marketing efforts helping you reach this goal? If they're not, you might find yourself lost in the sea while your competitors pull ahead. In today's episode, we are discussing how to grow your business through video with  Jessica Edwards, a Realtor, and owner of Jessica Edwards & Associates is known for her innovative use of technology and video and cutting-edge marketing tactics. She joins The CoLab hosts Megan Marsh and Andres Munar to discuss how these tactics can be used to help small businesses grow. Show Notes: Consumers are just a few clicks away from an endless sea of videos thanks to smartphones and computers. The use of video to market businesses, products, and services continue to rise. Luckily, you don't need to invest thousands of dollars to break into video, so even small businesses have a chance to add it to their marketing toolbox. This week's CoLab guest Jessica Edwards has been at the forefront of video marketing for Coldwell Banker. She shares her expertise with hosts Megan Marsh and Andres Munar in this episode. Ready to dive in? Here's what we're covering in this episode of The CoLab: [01:15] Expensive commercials have long set the standard for video marketing, but video technology became more widely accessible in the mid-2000s. This prompted businesses big and small to harness its power for their own marketing platforms. [08:08] Video marketing gives business owners an avenue for building trust and connecting to clients before they even step foot in an office or store. [15:06] Video can be a daunting medium but Jessica says one of the keys to making it work is to keep yourself from overanalyzing and over-critiquing the content you create through it. [22:44] You don't need thousands of dollars invested in equipment and software to make a splash with video. Start simply by recording on a phone and upgrade as demand for content increases. [31:52] Not every video you create for your company has to be promotional. Video also gives you an opportunity to put a personal touch on ordinary business practices, such as welcoming new clients. 032: Community Leadership in the Philanthropic Sector (Michael Marsicano)SUMMARYMichael Marsicano leads one of the largest community foundations in the United States. He is passionate about bringing communities together to maximize philanthropy and improve all aspects of society. Like nonprofit leaders around the world, he was faced with an unprecedented challenge – and opportunity – with the arrival of COVID-19. What did he do? He mobilized his team and collaborative partners throughout the region to quickly establish the COVID-19 Response Fund, one of the largest efforts anywhere in the country. While the fund itself is a fascinating study in community partnerships and the power of philanthropy, Michael and I discussed much more. What are the lessons nonprofit leaders should be learning right now, and how can they best leverage their teams, their boards and their donors? What does this mean for the nonprofit sector after we get through the initial relief efforts? What does this mean for arts & culture organizations that are not on the front line of relief efforts but are hurting, nonetheless? These are just a few of the topics we discussed, and Michael offered words of wisdom and actionable takeaways in every case.ABOUT MICHAELMichael Marsicano, Ph.D., is President and CEO of Foundation For The Carolinas, the community foundation serving Charlotte and the surrounding 13-county region. The Foundation leads a variety of civic leadership initiatives in areas such as affordable housing, economic opportunity, public school reform, the arts and the environment. Since Dr. Marsicano joined the Foundation in 1999 its assets have grown from $245 million to now more than $2.6 billion. During that time, FFTC rose from the 35th largest community foundation in the U.S. to currently the 6th largest, and now manages nearly 3,000 charitable funds. During his tenure, contributions to FFTC-held funds have exceeded $4 billion and grant awards to nonprofits total more than $2.8 billion. Dr. Marsicano joined FFTC after serving as President and CEO of the Arts & Science Council in Charlotte for 10 years. During his tenure, the United Arts Fund moved to the nation’s highest in per capita in annual giving and became one of the largest endowed arts councils in the U.S. A native of New York, Dr. Marsicano received his Bachelor of Science, Master of Education and Doctor of Philosophy from Duke University. He is married to the Rev. Leslie Montfort Marsicano, also a graduate of Duke University and the Duke Divinity School.

[00:15] Hey everybody, welcome to the podcast. Today’s episode is gonna be kind of fun. As you know, probably from listening to the podcast, Kai and I are big book fans and so we wanted to kind of share our top five books for each, I guess just top five bucks. So kind of do you have your top five bucks? Are you ready? [00:31] I do. Now I kind of have a top five books in lots of different categories into books. So I tried to make this one my business top five, so yeah. [00:43] And that’s what I kind of did too. So these will be, what’s interesting is I think there’ll be business books, but there’s so much like kind of this self help in there and just about like getting rid of head trash and stuff like that. So, but I think, yeah, the minor definitely business centered for sure. So [00:55] yeah. Yeah, I always do books that like has kind of shaped my life because I do have certain authors that I feel like their viewpoint on the world has helped me figure out who I want to be. Like Madeleine L’Engle or Anne McCaffrey, which are not really, people don’t really read those very much, but I felt like for this podcast I want him to be pretty specific and do things that are going to help people straight up in their business. So I’m a cyber fraud. [01:21] That’s where I’m at too. Cool. So do you want me to start? I’ll start. It doesn’t work. Yeah. Yeah, you do your first one. Okay, so the first book, this one I’m doing first because it was one of the first books that we read that actually launched our business and helped us and it’s actually book yourself solid by Michael Port. Have you read that one yet? No, I haven’t. Okay, so it’s a, it’s a general business book. It kind of talks about like basically he has likes on some philosophies in there like a red rope policy, which is basically like not everybody can do business with you kind of thing. And that was really good for us so that he starts to make you think like, okay, you have the small set of people that you’re marketing to and that you’re working with and you don’t need to work with everybody. So it’s just a really kind of a general book about business, but it’s, it’s super good and really comprehensive. It’s a pretty easy read. He’s entertaining and he’s got, he’s got some other... “I think those pain points in all areas of golf are tremendous opportunities to rethink the industry in many exciting ways" To kick off Season 6 our host Colin Weston speaks to Professor Renée Mauborgne, co-author of the best-selling business books Blue Ocean Strategy and Blue Ocean Shift. Renée provides a masterclass on how golf industry businesses and organizations can capture new demand, find new customers and make the competition irrelevant. https://files.fireside.fm/file/fireside-uploads/images/1/1ea879c1-a4a2-4e10-bea4-e5d8368a3c7a/X7wcIstN.jpg On this episode Renée and Colin cover a wide range of golf industry topics including: • How non-golf oganizations like Cirque de Soleil, Airbnb and Apple have applied Blue Ocean Strategy to their success. • How you can shift your organization from competing to creating with tools and a framework in a risk-minimizing way. • If you want to create a blue ocean, you can’t look at what people are doing in your competitive set. You need to look outside to understand how to shift what you do to creat new value. To learn more about how Blue Ocean Strategy has unlocked new growth in the golf industry, read Colin's blog post "Turning Green Fairways Into Blue Oceans (https://www.blueoceanstrategy.com/blog/turning-green-fairways-into-blue-oceans/)". https://files.fireside.fm/file/fireside-uploads/images/1/1ea879c1-a4a2-4e10-bea4-e5d8368a3c7a/jDH9SdbW.jpg Renée speaks about how successful companies have created new products/services/experiences that appeal to the ocean of "non-customers" that both Topgolf and Cirque de Soleil have captured. Rather than competing over the existing customers your industry fights over, Blue Ocean Strategy allows you to attact a much bigger audience found in the "Three tiers of non-customers". https://files.fireside.fm/file/fireside-uploads/images/1/1ea879c1-a4a2-4e10-bea4-e5d8368a3c7a/xzAuVD8-.jpg https://files.fireside.fm/file/fireside-uploads/images/1/1ea879c1-a4a2-4e10-bea4-e5d8368a3c7a/ARuQ4KxZ.jpg https://files.fireside.fm/file/fireside-uploads/images/1/1ea879c1-a4a2-4e10-bea4-e5d8368a3c7a/l4okoX8c.jpg To learn more about Blue Ocean Strategy, visit their website at https://www.blueoceanstrategy.com/ https://files.fireside.fm/file/fireside-uploads/images/1/1ea879c1-a4a2-4e10-bea4-e5d8368a3c7a/Y-1ouf4M.jpg (https://www.blueoceanstrategy.com/) Special Guest: Renée Mauborgne - Co-author of Blue Ocean Strategy and Blue Ocean Shift.

Blue Ocean Strategy (Book Review) Today I read one of the most amazing business books I've read in my entire life and this is "Blue Ocean". Here is the book descriptions extracted from Amazon: "Written by the business world's new gurus, Blue Ocean Strategy continues to challenge everything you thought you knew about competing in today's crowded market place. Based on a study of 150 strategic moves spanning more than a hundred years and thirty industries, authors W. Chan Kim and Renee Mauborgne argue that lasting success comes from creating 'blue oceans': untapped new market spaces ripe from growth. And the business world has caught on - companies around the world are skipping the bloody red oceans of rivals and creating their very own blue oceans. With over one million copies sold world wide, Blue Ocean Strategy is quickly reaching "must read" status among smart business readers. Have you caught the wave? The global phenomenon that has sold 3.6 million copies, is published in a record-breaking 44 languages and is a bestseller across five continents―now updated and expanded with new content In this perennial bestseller, embraced by organizations and industries worldwide, globally preeminent management thinkers W. Chan Kim and Renée Mauborgne challenge everything you thought you knew about the requirements for strategic success. Recognized as one of the most iconic and impactful strategy books ever written, Blue Ocean Strategy, now updated with fresh content from the authors, argues that cutthroat competition results in nothing but a bloody red ocean of rivals fighting over a shrinking profit pool. Based on a study of 150 strategic moves (spanning more than 100 years across 30 industries), the authors argue that lasting success comes not from battling competitors but from creating “blue oceans”―untapped new market spaces ripe for growth. Blue Ocean Strategy presents a systematic approach to making the competition irrelevant and outlines principles and tools any organization can use to create and capture their own blue oceans. This expanded edition includes: A new preface by the authors: Help! My Ocean Is Turning Red Updates on all cases and examples in the book, bringing their stories up to the present time Two new chapters and an expanded third one ― Alignment, Renewal, and Red Ocean Traps ― that address the most pressing questions readers have asked over the past 10 years A landmark work that upends traditional thinking about strategy, this bestselling book charts a bold new path to winning the future. The first book was first published in 2005 and has sold over 3.5 million copies. It is an Amazon Best Seller. The other was published in 1910 and is a business and personal development classic.
