This week I take a break from historical documents to look at some recent events here in Central Bucks School District. Our recent school board meeting on December 4, 2023 made Fox News and also was mentioned on The Michael Knowles Show. While there is much to discuss, the highlight of the evening involved the new board chair, Karen Smith, being sworn in not on the Bible, but a stack of LGBTQ+ books (including some sexually explicit ones). Today I look at Jeremiah 44 and see how Karen Smith, perhaps without knowing it, has sworn by the authority of a different god, the Queen of Heaven. Elon Musk rips off the mask and jumps on the antisemitic conspiracy bandwagon on that platform formerly known as Twitter. Yeah, the one he owns.  New Republican Christian nationalist Speaker of the House, Mike Johnson calls the separation between church and state a “misnomer” and a “misunderstanding” of the true intent of the Founders.  A judge has cleared the way for a slew of lawsuits against Meta and other tech giants to go forward. 42 state attorneys general and multiple school districts are suing the companies as knowingly designing their platforms to be addictive for kids, despite knowing about the harm those platforms induce.  Pennridge School District faces a new federal Civil Rights complaint over “the district's ongoing discriminatory policies, practices, and an environment perceived as hostile due to ongoing race- and sex-based harassment.” The outgoing school board majority only poured fuel on the fires of discrimination, enacting overtly discriminatory policies.  Central Bucks School Board votes to give outgoing superintendent Abram Lucabaugh a $712,000 golden parachute after he abruptly resigned following the results of this month's elections. Newly elected school board members say, not so fast.  A federal judge also ordered Lucabaugh not to delete any documents related to a federal lawsuit alleging retaliation against Central Bucks teacher Andre Burgess, who filed a federal discrimination complaint on behalf of a transgender student.  Doylestown's own Pink has teamed up with PEN American to give away more than 2,000 banned books during her shows in Florida this week.  Book recommendations: Naomi Klein, Doppelganger: A Trip Into the Mirror World; Rebecca Campbell, Aboreality; Mary-Jane Rubenstein, Astrotopia: The Dangerous Religion of the Corporate Space Race. UAW settled their contract with Ford this week - the gains in the contract show once again that organized, fearless worker organizing is what gets the goods.  House Republicans finally managed to elect a new speaker of the house. Introducing Mike Johnson, the anti-LGBTQ, election-denying, climate crisis-denying, right-wing Christian nationalist leader of the Republican-led House.  Amazon announces near-record profits after two straight years of eliminating jobs and tightening worker surveillance. Also in Amazon news, a new report shows that more than 4 in 10 Amazon workers report being injured on the job, and about 80% of workers feel the stare of Big Brother, surveilling them at work. Coincidence?  Biden's strong support of the Israeli government - even during its indiscriminate, ongoing bombing of civilian areas in Gaza - is hitting him in the polls.  The Biden administration approved the bombing of targets in Syria after drone and rocket attacks against American forces stationed in Iraq and Syria.  And another mass shooting rocks the country, this time in Lewiston, Maine. At least 18 people have been killed and the killer remains on the loose.  Florida Gov. Ron Desantis's solution to mass killings is to make guns easier to purchase and institutionalize more people against their will. Freedom rings.  Pennridge School District passes anti-trans policy in the name of “protecting girls sports,” providing a platform for Republican school board candidates to approve of the culture war before the Nov. 7 election. Pennridge parent Darren Lausten won his lawsuit against Pennridge School District. The Judge ordered the District to hand over its book-banning records.  Council Rock School District is the next target of Moms for Liberty - hoping to bring the politics dominating Pennridge and Central Bucks to their district.  Pennsylvania's Republican-led Senate passes state-wide book-banning bill.  And so much more.

New indictments against Trump announced. The ditch keeps getting deeper.  UPS Teamsters announced a “historic” contract win a week before what could have been one of the largest strikes in American history. The details of the contract will be the proof to that claim. Since the announcement some UPS Teamsters are saying the unions 180,000 part-time workers may not get as good of a deal as suggested.  In what could prove to be a sign that higher education faculty are willing to step up and fight to a greater degree, the American Association of University Professors (AAUP) voted to affiliate with the American Federation of Teachers (AFT). The alliance will be the largest union of higher education faculty - about 300,000 strong.  Following new scientific data from the World Meteorological Organization on this summer's record heat, UN secretary general Antonio Guterres, proclaimed that the era of global warming has ended and the “era of global boiling has arrived.”  It's been so hot in Arizona that the state's famous Saguaro cacti are literally collapsing.  Ocean temperatures of over 100 degrees in waters around Florida could be a global record.  Something else that climate change is giving us to worry about. More Americans are developing a rare meat allergy - Alpha-gal syndrome - which is linked to bites from the lone star tick. New data from the CDC find a steep increase in cases of alpha-gal. Alpha-gale can give you  “stomach cramps, diarrhea, hives, and shortness of breath that could trigger fatal anaphylaxis,” according to the BBC.  GM and other major automakers announce they will build 30,000 electric vehicle chargers to help build out the electric vehicle charging network.  While Republican politicians and media personalities make is seem as though all parents are up in arms about their public schools, about 80% of parents responding to a new Gallup poll say they are somewhat or completely satisfied with their child's school. That confirms what a string of other polls conducted during the pandemic have shown. There's a gap between the political propaganda and real schools.  And Mitch McConnell suffers a medical incident in the middle of a press conference. The party line is that “he's fine” but no information about what actually happened has been released.  Central Bucks school board votes to give their superintendent, Dr. Abram Lucabauh, an $86,000 raise and a new 5 year contract after he joined with the board's new right-wing board to enact book bans, anti-LGBTQ politics, and more. He will now be one of highest paid public school administrators in PA. Pennridge School District board members are enraged over “secret” curriculum meetings between Vermillion Education's Jordan Adams and select members of the board. Christening Batycki, a member of the curriculum committee, found out “by happenstance” that Jordan Blomgren and Megan Banis-Clemens were meeting secretly with Adams to discuss the direction of the curriculum.  Barbie breaks box office records as the right-wing loses it's collective mind (again).  Sinéad O'Connor dies at age 56. Morrissey writes a passionate tribute to her and condemns the music industry for their treatment of her.

A county in Oregon is suing some major fossil fuel companies and industry groups for their role in climate change. According to a report in DeSmog blog, the lawsuit “seeks to hold fossil fuel companies and their ‘misinformation agents' accountable for the unprecedented 2021 heat dome that saw temperatures in the county reach 116 degrees Fahrenheit.” This lawsuit is of special interest because it also implicates the global consulting firm, McKinsey & Company for their role in spreading misinformation.  And while the national media was urgently reporting on the fate of 5 people on a shoddy submarine seeking to tour the Titanic wreck, North Atlantic ocean temperatures went off the map. The unexpected heating of the Atlantic is, in the words of Bill McKibben, “truly terrifying news.”  In addition, an unprecedented “heat dome” over Mexico and Texas is producing deadly storms and heat. The jet stream maps are wild.  A meteorologist in Iowa resigned from his local TV news job due to ongoing threats from climate change deniers.  New reporting by Cyril Mychalejko in the Bucks County Beacon shows how the right-wing donor group, the Bradley Foundation, is now helping bankroll efforts to help Republicans weaponize the Department of Justice.  Moms for Liberty is holding their annual national summit in Philadelphia beginning next week. They will be met by protests as they host a range of Republican presidential hopefuls including Trump, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, and former Trump official and South Carolina Governor, Nikki Haley. And, now we've learned that pseudo-populist, anti-vaxxer and conspiracy theorist, Robert Kenndy, Jr. will be speaking there as well.  As the Mad Moms get ready to gather in Philly, yet another M4L chapter in Indiana is under fire for quoting Hitler approvingly in their newsletter.  New reporting in Vice documents the close relationship M4L has cultivated with the Proud Boys and other extremist organizations.  And let's not forget about the leader of the Monroe County, PA M4L chapter who stole a dead woman's Facebook identity to harass others. Seems to me that all the bad apples are in the same place.  Info on protests in the Bucks County Beacon.  New reporting in the Bucks County Courier-Times shows how the Harrisburg-based  right-wing religious Independence Law Firm has influenced and continues to influence Central Bucks and York schools.  The Pennridge School Board meeting was packed once again as the far-right majority continued to force through their agenda and demonstrate their incompetence. A right-wing takeover of a Colorado school board is a case study for what's happening nationwide.  The Woodland Park school board was taken over by conservatives in 2021. They moved quickly to radically transform the district, learning from the tactics of Donald Trump and Steve Bannon, and bolstered by big-money fueling Christian nationalists curricular changes.  These “American Birthright” curricular standards passed by the Woodland Park school board are similar to the Hillsdale College K-12 curriculum, but target State Standards as well as District ones.  Florida Governor Ron DeSantis signs a bill that dramatically limits transgender medical treatments, restricts pronoun use in schools, and forces people to use bathrooms corresponding to their birth sex.  New York City is sinking due to the massive weight of its skyscrapers. Studies are showing that will only exacerbate the effects of climate change. Cherelle Parker wins the hotly contested and closely watched race for Philly's next mayor. One of Parker's campaign pledges was to hire more police in the midst of a wave of violence in the city. She is not set to become Philly's first Black woman mayor. The most progressive candidate in the race, Helen Gym came in third. Gym's campaign was quick to offer congratulations and support for Parker as she pledged to continue to build grassroots power.  Sara Innamorato wins big in the Democratic primary for Allegheny County executive. Much of Innamorato's win is rooted in the work she and other members of the progressive community in the County have done to build a strong, progressive movement. The Pittsburgh area continues to build a model of deep-rooted progressive organizing.  As the Intercept reported, the results for Tuesday's primary were a mixed bag for progressives. The Pittsburgh area seeing progressive gains, while Philadelphia showing a stronger preference for more moderate Democratic Party machine platforms.  Democrats will maintain control of the Pennsylvania House following Heather Boyd's win in Tuesday's special election to fill the empty seat in the 163rd district in Delaware County.  There were some promising signs in the Pennridge and Central Bucks school board races. Both of those races showed signs that some Republicans may be supporting Democratic candidates after a few years of right-wing extremism on their boards.  Central Bucks still in the book banning business as the school board orders the removal of “Gender Queer” and “This Book is Gay,” from library shelves.

According to a new survey from the nonpartisan Public Religion Research Institute and the Brookings Institution, more than half of Republicans either adhere to or sympathize with Christian nationalism. Legal experts are concerned that this case will only exacerbate attacks on marriage equality.  Kentucky Supreme Court ruled to keep a near-total ban on abortion in place while a lower court deliberates on the constitutionality of the law. The current Kentucky law only allows abortion to save the life of a pregnant person.  Meanwhile, the Supreme Court of the United State is hearing two cases that have challenged Biden's student loan forgiveness program. Writing in Vox, Ian Milhiser makes clear that the student loan forgiveness program is explicitly authorized by the 2022 Heroes Act, but “the Court's Republican majority is unlikely to care.” New report shows that we could enter a climate “doom loop” that could “become so overwhelming that they undermine humanity's capacity to tackle climate change's root causes.”  This week's mass shooting at Michigan State University killed three students and critically injured another 5. The books targeted for banning are based on a site created by the far-right group Moms for Liberty.  52 school board directors from 25 Pennsylvania school districts are calling on Central Bucks School District to repeal their recently passed ban against so-called “advocacy activities.” The group of directors condemned Central Bucks school board majority for “fostering intolerance,” “discrimination,” and targeting LGBTQ students for “political purposes.”  Temple University graduate students strike as university administrators turn to class anti-worker, union-busting tactics. The U.S. and Germany are sending a whole bunch of tanks to Ukraine as the war continues into its second year.  Later today the Memphis, TN police will release video of the brutal and fatal police beating of 27-year-old Tyre Nichols. The five police officers who fatally beat Nichols have been fired and are facing second-degree murder charges.  PA-based libertarian billionaire, Jeffrey Yass, is funding a new poliitcal action committee called “The Moderate PAC” that will target progressive primary challengers in favor of centrist and corporate Democrats.  Colleges and Universities are starting to hire “Chief Experience Officers” to “ensure that consumers are having satisfying interactions” with the institutions - a practices imported from the corporate world.  We're seeing the new censorship policy in the Central Bucks School District in action. A librarian at Central Bucks South high school was told by his principal to take down a quote from Elie Wiesel, the Nobel laureate Holocaust survivor, because it violated the district's new ban on advocating “partisan, political, or social policy issues” to students. The principal later reversed his order, but left a chilling effect on speech behind.  Turns out that Central Bucks is using a conservative Christian law firm with ties with anti-LGBTQ, Christian nationalist organization the Family Research Council. The Family Research Council is recognized as a extremist hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center.  The Pennridge School District school board is seeking to impose versions of the Hillsdale College 1776 curriculum on teachers and students. Hillsdale College is an infamous right-wing, Christian college in Michigan that has been fueling flames of resentment and pushing a whitewashed curriculum in charter and public schools. The president of Hillsdale College, Larry Arnn III, provides a window into the college's believes. In 2013, he referred to minority students as “dark ones” in legislative hearings; earlier this summer - in the midst of Hillsdale's partnership to take over charter schools in the state - Arnn told the Gov. of Tennessee that “teachers are trained in the dumbest parts of the dumbest colleges in the country." Hillsdale's 1776 curriculum was launched in the wake of Trump's 1776 Commission to push back against the 1619 Project.

The Supreme Court is back in session. According to Ian Milhiser of Vox, “The Supreme Court's new term could be even more consequential than its last one.”  “A single case, Moore v. Harper” Millhiser writes, “threatens to fundamentally rewrite the rules governing federal elections, potentially giving state legislatures…nearly limitless power to skew those elections.”  A right-wing legal organization based out of Wisconsin, the Institute for Law and Liberty, is suing the Biden administration over plans to cancel some student debt.  Because the Biden administration has stated that his student loan cancelation plan will help narrow the racial wealth gap and advance racial equity, the Institute for Law and Liberty argues that the action constitutes an “improper racial motive.”  Biden announced that he is pardoning thousands of people convicted of simple possession of marijuana, saying in a statement that “Too many lives have been upended because of our failed approach to marijuana. It's time that we write these wrongs.” The executive action will apply to more than 6,500 people convicted of simple possession under federal law or under the D.C. code.  Reporting in the Atlantic, Robinson Meyer gives an uncharacteristically upbeat report on how the Inflation Reduction Act could prove to have a much bigger effect on a shift to a post-carbon economy than most people expected. Near famine conditions across parts of Africa. As Tasneem Essop, Executive Director of the Climate Action Network told the Guardian, “The terrifying picture painted by the United in Science report is already a lived reality for millions of people facing recurring climate disasters. The science is clear, yet the addiction to fossil fuels by greedy corporations and rich countries is resulting in losses and damages for communities who have done the least to cause the current climate crisis.” A massive railroad strike was temporarily averted as union negotiators reached a tentative agreement on a contract. On tonight's show, I welcome Diana Leygerman back to the show. Diana is a writer, teacher, activist, and former Central Bucks school board candidate. In another example of how elections have consequences, this past week the Central Bucks School Board - dominated by increasing right-wing members - cancelled a field trip to the National Holocaust Museaum in D.C. Why? Well, turns out D.C. strict vaccine and mask mandates was too much for the anti-mask snowflakes to handle. And, as it turns out, the son of one of the school board members was supposed to go on the field trip, but he is not vaccinated. Another perfect example of board members exerting their extremist views with consequences for all the children in the district.  Diana Leygerman pointed all of this out on Twitter and her tweet went nuts. Over 90,000 people viewed her tweet, which helped bolster continued organizing among parents, students, and community members. Looking forward to getting a lay of the land in Central Bucks.  You can support this show by becoming a patron for as little as $5/month at patreon.com/rcpress.  You can also help out the show by heading over to our YouTube channel if you are not there already and smash that subscribe button, like the stream for this show, and hit that notification bell so you'll know every time we go live.  Join our Discord server: https://discord.gg/WMW98RQEYV

Russia takes a few more steps closer to provoking war in Ukraine.  The Canadian “Freedom Convoy” protests intensify. Three international bridges have been blocked and supply lines are further jammed up. The Biden administration is urging Canadadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to use federal powers to end the bridge blockade. Copycat protests are creeping up in other parts of the country and across the world. New reporting from the New York Times suggest that weekend protests in the U.S. may disrupt the Super Bowl, according to the Department of Homeland Security.  As the number of COVID cases start to slowly decrease, even Democratic governors are racing ahead of scientists to rollback pandemic safety protocols. So much for “listening to the scientists.” Meanwhile, the new Omicron “subvariant” is now dominant in South Africa and is expected to spread. Scientists are still finding the variant to spread even more easily than Omicron, but it does not appear to be more deadly.  It looks like sticking our heads in the sand during a pandemic isn't an entirely American practice. Writing in the Washington Post, Jess McHugh takes a look at what happened ahead of a 4th wave of the Spanish Flu…it's remarkably familiar.  Australia just designated koalas as an endangered species. Environment Minister Sussan Ley said in a statement, “The impact of prolonged drought, followed by the black summer bushfires, and the cumulative impacts of disease, urbanization and habitat loss over the past twenty years have led to the advice.”  PA's Supreme Court put on hold the period for candidates to gather signature petitions to qualify for the May 17 primary.  Victor Martinez, a Lehigh Valley Latino radio station owner says he may join with Republicans to contest newly drawn congressional maps.  According to the Pennsylvania Capital-Star, “Martinez has argued that the maps as currently drawn will dilute the voting power of Pennsylvania's Latino residents, even though they were the fastest growing demographic group in Pennsylvania.” Central Bucks school district field trip to the Holocaust Museam in Washington, DC was cancelled this week because some school board members were upset with DC's strict vaccination requirements. Diana Leygerman - who we've had on the show - tweeted out her outrage at the cancellations and it went viral with more than 90,000 people viewing her tweet.  Bethlehem-based Alt-right podcaster, Joseph Paul Berger, is facing federal charges for allegedly stockpiling a cache of more than a dozen unregistered machine guns. Yesterday marked the one-year anniversary of Biden's inauguration. So, how things going, dog? As expected, Joe Manchin and Kyrsten Sinema, sided with Republicans and voted against changing Senate filibuster rules to pass voting rights legislation, despite claiming to support the legislation. That means, of course, that voting rights legislation was blocked by a minority of Senators. The vote shined a bright light on the fact that any major legislation favored by Democrats or progressives is dead in the water if the composition of the Senate remains the same.  Biden and Democratic Party leaders now say they will try to break up and scale down Biden's signature Build Back Better bill in an attempt to get some of it passed. However, it is unclear how that would happen. Even if some of it did, this means that the U.S. government will not pass critical legislation necessary to address multiple crises heading straight for us.  Don't Look Up, folks.  Biden's approval ratings hit a new low with a majority of Americans disapproving over his handling of his job as president, according to a new poll from The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research. Perhaps even more troubling for Biden, only 28% of respondents said they wanted Biden to run for reelection in 2024 - that includes only 48% of Democrats.  Maybe time for a war? Well, that looks like a distinct possibility as Russia threatens to invade Ukraine. Biden didn't help matters this week when he seemed to indicate that the U.S. and NATO allies might not respond if Russia made a  “minor incursion” into Ukraine. That, as you can imagine, didn't go over well with Ukraine leaders. U.S. Secretary of State, Anthony Blinken has hardened the U.S. stance, now telling Ukraine leaders the U.S. is committed to a "united, swift and severe response" if Moscow commits further aggression against Ukraine. The aftermath of the volcanic explosion near Tonga, the devastation is only now becoming clear.  Malcolm Kenyatta and Conor Lamb scored important endorsements for the US Senate race.  Kenyatta picked up the endorsements of SEIU Healthcare PA, 32 BJ, 668 and the state council while Conor Lamb picked up Mayor Jim Kenney, a couple of city council members and the building trades.  Rumor has it that Lamb is also seeking the endorsement of the Philadelphia Park Authority.   Josh Shapiro seems to have missed the past couple of years in Democratic politics, leaning into the “ReFund” the police and “more cops” messaging from the 1990s.  Philadelphia council member Bobby Henon, resigned from City Council after a federal jury convicted Henon along with Johnny “Doc” Dougherty on corruption charges. Henon was convicted of selling his seat out to serve Johnny Doc's personal and political interests. Henon said he would not step down, but just a month ahead of his sentencing hearing, he seems to have changed his mind.  A middle school student in Kutztown formed the “Team Banned Book Club” after local and national extremism leading to banning books and raucous school board meetings screaming about critical race theory. Joslyn Diffenbaugh, an 8th grade student in Kutztown, formed the group because she “wanted to make sure teens have access to books that they can personally relate to or have interest in and not let groups in our community dictate what we can and cannot read.”  And as the Pennridge School District continues to ban and remove books that mention gender identity or engage racism, a group calling itself the Pennridge Improvement Project is working to make those books accessible by stocking “Little Libraries” around the district with school board banned books. And a Pennridge student group, Pennridge Rise Up, is petitioning against the book banning and favor of DEI initiatives.  Doylestown Health calls on Central Bucks School District to change their COVID plan because the hospital is overwhelmed with cases. You'll recall that last week the Central Bucks school board passed a health and safety plan that they knew did not follow CDC guidelines, despite stating that they were.  The James Webb telescope successfully deployed all of its 18 hexagonal mirrors ahead of schedule and is on its way to its permanent orbit around L2 - the Earth-Sun Lagrange Point - about a million miles from Earth. It should enter that orbit on Sunday, January 23. We should start getting images from Webb in about three months! Meatloaf died after becoming seriously ill with COVID. Tonight on Out d'Coup LIVE, I welcome Diana Leygerman to the show. Diana is a teacher, writer, and former Central Bucks School Board candidate. We'll be talking about the ongoing political and cultural battles that have erupted in the Central Bucks School district and districts across Bucks County, Pennsylvania, and the nation. Last month, The New York Times's podcast, "The Daily," ran a two-part story on the increasing tensions in the Central Bucks School District. Following that podcast, Diana Leygerman's article "Central Bucks is Not OK," filled in some of the holes and contexts in the Times's story. Her personal and critical account of what happened in Central Bucks should be required reading for all of us. Diana Leygerman is a teacher, writer, and a former CBSD school board candidate. She lives in Warwick, PA with her husband and their two children. She is the recipient of the Anne Frank teaching award and was honored at the SAFA Gala in 2018. Her work has been published in The Week, Smercornish, The Independent, Women's Health, and several other online and print publications. Leygerman wrote of experience being honored at the Spirit of Anne Frank Awards on her Medium page. She concluded: "My grandmother grew up surrounded by war and death and dictatorship. My parents fled from anti-Semitism. At 11 years old, I came to the United States as a Jewish refugee. I live my life every day trying to create a better world for my children and, as a teacher, for the children of others. In our world today, when basic human rights are once again threatened, I refuse to fall short of teaching the lessons I know my students must learn if they are to grow up in a world my grandmother could only dream of. In our world today, in a world that is eerily Orwellian, I know I must be a voice of progress, change, and protest." Hello everybody, today we are going to hear a sermon from R. Marcus Rubenstein on Parshat Vayishlach given Saturday November 20th, 2021 at Shabbat morning services at Temple of Aaron. Rabbi Marcus explores how we deal with large, complicated and important communal issues in our communities. We will explore a specific case that was documented in the NY Times Daily podcast that occurred within the school board of the Central Bucks county Pennsylvania school district recently. He then worked to diagnose why we are having such a difficult and unproductive time dealing with these issues through the paradigm of the encounter between Jacob and his brother Esau. Pragmatic conclusions are then offered that can help us have productive, albeit hard, conversations in our communities, with our families and with each other to help us all move forward together. We hope you enjoy.

New research shows that at least 50% of people who survive COVID-19 “experience a variety of physical and psychological health issues for at least six months following their recovery,” according to the Washington Post.  The Congressional Budget Office says that Biden's Build Back Better Bill will not be entirely paid for as the White House claimed. It's close, but the CBO didn't think the IRS would be able to raise $67 billion over 10 years; they put the number at $207 billion. That might just be enough for Manchin or Sinema to take a hatchet to key provisions of the Build Back Better bill.  UAW workers at John Deere approved a new contract after a month on strike. The agreement will see a 20% increase in wages over the course of the contract and significant improvements in working conditions. Rank-and-file working power baby.  The Ohio House passes a bill that will let residents 21 years old and older to carry concealed weapons without any kind of license or permit. If the Ohio Senate passes the bill, there will no longer be a requirement for a background check or training.  A school district in Goddard, Kansas orders 29 books be banned from its libraries. You can already guess the kind of books being banned: the Pulitzer Prize winning play “Fences,” but August Wilson; Margaret Atwood's, The Handmaid's Tale; The Hate You Give, by Angie Thomas; and Toni Morrison's The Bluest Eye, are among the books on the list.  Ithaca, New York votes to decarbonize all of its buildings by 2025. The unanimous vote for their “Efficiency Retrofit and Thermal Load Electrification Program,” will include everything from swapping out natural gas and propane cooking with electric induction to installing solar panels. The city of 30,000 is working with a Brooklyn-base company, BlocPower to manage the program. The move will eliminate 40% of the city's carbon emissions.  Right-wing parent groups at the forefront of “critical race theory” protests are now shifting their target to school-based mental health programs, according to reporting by NBC news. You heard that right. No more talk of suicide prevention, depression, or any “social emotional learning” is the goal. Right-wiing groups apparently believe that “social emotional learning has become a ‘Trojan horse' for critical race theory…[and] encourage children to celebrate diversity, sometimes introducing students to conversations about race, gender, and sexuality.” God forbid.  And, the QAnon Shaman is sentenced to 41 months in prison.  Earlier this month, the Fulton County Commissioners denied the Fulton County Library a $3,000 budget increase because they host “hate groups” that are sympathetic to the LGBTQ communities or the Black Lives Matter movements. In response to this bigotry, Emily Best from the Sisters of the Night Caucus launched a gofundme page to help the library close the budget gap and ended up raising over $26,000.   Pennsylvania House Republicans used their fall session to highlight their extremist agenda.  House Republicans passed a constitutional open-carry gun rights bill, a bill making bail funds illegal and advanced more voter suppression measures.  The House Labor and Industry Committee held a hearing on a slate of radical anti-union bills.  Public Sector labor leaders refused to participate in the committee's “farce,” and Democratic Chair Jerry Mullery walked out of the committee meeting and hosted a press conference outside of the meeting with members and labor leaders. A landmark PA school funding trial got underway. The case involves the cash-strapped Panther Valley School District and five other Pennsylvania school districts. In opening remarks, of course, GOP House Speaker Bryan Cutler argued that there's nothing to see here, everything's fine. Tell that to the 75 kindergartners in the Panther Valley School District who are forced to share one toilet and two urinals.  Spanning both Carbon and Schuylkill Counties, Panther Valley serves more than 1,600 students. Around 56% are classified as economically disadvantaged, though McAndrew believes the number of children living in poverty is higher. Lt. Governor John Fetterman joined Kutztown University Dining Workers United for a rally on Tuesday, demanding Aramark and Kutztown University recognize their union.  Dina Leygerman, a former Central Bucks School Board candidate, wrote an excellent piece on Medium critically responding to the recent two-part podcast on The Daily from the New York Times on the school board wars in Central Bucks. Dina Leygerman lays out a much more toxic history and lays bare the role Paul Martino played in fomenting the conflicts.  The highly anticipated series The Wheel of Time launches on Amazon's Prime Video. Dawn and her husband have been part of the Pennridge community for the past 15 years. Dawn is especially interested in helping Pennridge evolve and rebuild after the pandemic. Specifically, she is interested in enhancing education with the district's new technology; promoting physical, social, and emotional well-being; and finding new ways to recognize and celebrate diverse backgrounds and experiences of the student body and the community. She comes from a family of teachers and has participated in curriculum writing and leadership activities at Central Bucks, coached several sports teams, is the faculty advisor for her school's newspaper and the newly formed No Place for Hate leadership committee.  Carolyn Sciarrino grew up in Springfield Township in a close-knit Colombian family. Her parents emigrated to the U.S. in their twenties and ran an electrical repair shop and a hair salon. She carries their values of hard work, respect, honesty, strength of character, and kindness into raising her own family in the Pennridge school district. She and her husband are raising their four young children in the district and she has been a fierce advocate for her children and all the students in the district. She has a bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice from Temple and a master's degree from St. Joseph's University. She has worked in foster care, adoptions, school-based educational programs, and in social service with the Defender Association of Philadelphia.  Dawn and Carolyn are running as part of the "Pennridge United" slate of candidates that also includes Adrienne King and David O'Donnell, who we had on the show back on August 16. This year's campaign is especially contentious as their opposition has embraced much of the right wing culture war tactics that are infecting school board races throughout Bucks County and across the nation. Okay, thank you, everybody, for being here I think as you know in the last few hours we received confirmation of two presumed and I emphasize the word presumed positive or infected cases of COVID-19 or coronavirus in Pennsylvania. Now, I'm saying presumed positive for a reason because the results have to be confirmed by the CDC but we have two that we have tested in Pennsylvania and so we're presuming positive one is in Delaware County and the other is in Wayne County. Both of the cases have been quarantined in their homes and as you also probably know the Bucks County five schools have been shut down by the superintendent and the Health Department there, so we're monitoring that situation in Bucks County. Our Secretary of Health dr. Rachel Levine will give an update on all of this in just a minute since the identification of the COVID19 or coronavirus has been. Again, since the identification an emergency response team here in Pennsylvania right here in this building has been working diligently to develop a plan for when this virus inevitably arrived in Pennsylvania the Department of Health set up an incident command center at the beginning of February, so it's been up for five weeks now. Here in Pennsylvania Emergency Management building just down the hall and they have been coordinating and monitoring the responses that we've been making, so I think they've been hard at work, there have been and will continue to be numerous daily briefings with the federal Center for Disease Control and also the Department of Health is coordinating with other state agencies. The other states and relevant federal agencies state that they're dealing with here in Pennsylvania include PEMA, of course, the department's of Human Services education military and veterans affairs agriculture the Pennsylvania State Police the office of administration the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education the Department of Aging and the list goes on and on. Right now, the emphasis of the plan is mitigation tactics to keep this virus from spreading widely the confirmation of these presumed positive cases should serve as a reminder of the role, that every Pennsylvanian must continue to play. This is a responsibility that goes to almost 13 million of us in Pennsylvania. We have to control the spread and to decontaminate the coronavirus disease by what we do day in day out in our daily lives so tactics like washing your hands for at least 20 seconds or disinfecting the coronavirus. Basically, that's as long as it takes to sing happy birthday twice just as a guide 20 seconds covering your nose and mouth when you cough or sneeze and not with your hands but with your sleeve and your elbow, you can stop spreading the illness also just by not touching your face so those things are important. If you feel ill stay home and I'm encouraging employers to allow workers to take the sick time. I'm also suggesting if you can offer telecommuting work and other options that allow employees to work without risk of sharing the disease, more information on prevention and symptoms of the COVID-19 virus can be found by clicking the banner at the top of PA gov that's our website we will continue to update that website as we gather more information and when it emphasized that we all should remain calm here. Dr. Levine our health secretary has an extensive background in medicine and she's leading the team of highly trained medical and public health personnel who are fully prepared to continue to do what they've been doing for the last five weeks and that monitors the situation, so while the Department of Health is leading this response in conjunction with the Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency. They're also coordinating with every level of government in Pennsylvania the federal government and beyond to tackle any issues that may come up so I can assure you that our state government will continue to function smoothly as we respond to this public health issue and we're prepared to take action. On secondary issues just as we do with the natural disaster, so as the situation develops and we will continue to provide the public with information on the extent of the health crisis and our response so again please visit PA gov and follow the banner line or follow the commonwealth of Pennsylvania x' official Facebook or Twitter pages. So now I'm going to turn this over to Dr. Rachel Levine, secretary of health for the Department of Health Pennsylvania. Dr. Levine, thank you good morning. Thank you for attending our latest update on the 2019 novel coronavirus our COVID-19 as governor wolf has said we have two individuals with presumed positive cases of COVID-19 they are both at home and they are in isolation or quarantine and at the same time they are in good physical condition. We also are aware that five schools in Central Bucks school district have closed out of an abundance of caution and we are working with our partners at the Bucks County Health Department and school district and at this time. However, there are no confirmed cases in Bucks County and the situation there is actually not related to any Pennsylvania exposure. It is not related to the two cases that we are discussing and we are working with our County and Municipal Health Department partners to continue to test individuals that meet criteria for testing for COVID-19. Importantly we are able now as we have been reporting all week to do testing for COVID-19 at our state Public Health Laboratory in Exton Pennsylvania. We are continuing to increase our testing capabilities at this state laboratory and we are also aware that commercial labs are coming online. To also begin testing our Pennsylvania response teams include our colleagues at PEMA PennsylvaniaEmergency Management Association the Hospital and Health System Association of Pennsylvania HAP the Pennsylvania Medical Society all of our courageous first responders. Our County in Municipal Health Department partners and as the governor mentioned state federal and local partners and we are all prepared to deal with disease outbreaks including this one we expect more cases to be confirmed in the upcoming days and weeks and we want everyone to take action to help prevent the spread of this novel coronavirus COVID-19. We will continue to update our website and have the latest information tips and preparation checklists on our Department of Health website or health PA gov for you to use.

Dr. Perrodin's South Dakota Vacation | Drowning of Local Boy | David Interviewed About School Safety by New York Daily News | White House “Stop the Bleed” Campaign | and Prioritizing School Safety Initiatives. NEW YORK DAILY NEWS – SCHOOLS ARE INVESTING IN WAR-ZONE TRAUMA KITS IN CASE A SHOOTING HAPPENS. (The following article was written by Megan Cerullo on June 13, 2018). “School is a battlefield. Some schools are investing in war-zone trauma kits to stop gunshot victims from bleeding to death. The medical kits — which contain tourniquets, medicated gauze, coagulant to stop bleeding and other medical supplies, and generally cost between $40 and $100 — could help school staff and students treat the wounded before professional help arrives. The initiative has gained traction after a recent spate of school shootings, including a February massacre at Marjory Stoneman Douglas Smith High School in Parkland, Fla., that killed 17 people. Suffolk County school districts started stocking kits this year, accompanied by training in how to apply tourniquets and dress wounds. The Central Bucks, Chester County and Lower Merion school districts in Pennsylvania will also equip their schools with kits this fall, The Philadelphia Inquirer reported. School safety experts say the medical kits — tested on the battlefield in Iraq and Afghanistan — could be deployed for various uses, including sports injuries or science lab explosions, not just in the case of a school shooting. “Yes, tools like these might come into play in a school shooting, but they also may be relevant to a sports activity or other special event setting where someone is accidentally injured,” said Ken Trump, the president of National School Safety and Security Services. Dr. Matt Levy of Stop the Bleed, a movement dedicated to stopping preventable deaths, called the incidence of gun violence in schools an “unfortunate truth of modern society.” He said stocking the medical kits could play a part in keeping child gunshot victims alive, but that the kits alone are by no means a solution to preventing gun-related deaths in schools. “We have only minutes if someone is bleeding from an extremity to get them to a trauma center,” Levy told the Daily News. “If bystanders, who we call immediate responders, can render immediate aid before professional help arrives, that would help,” he said. “This doesn't address the societal issues around shootings, we are just trying to get after the injuries we can do something about.” Levy added that kit sales have gone up since Stop the Bleed began selling them about a year ago. He said the organization's site sees an uptick in traffic every time there is a high-profile shooting. Critics argue that efforts should instead be focused on finding ways to report threats in a timely manner. School safety expert David Perrodin said there was a push to bring supply kits into schools in 2007 after a gunman killed 32 people on Virginia Tech's campus in Blacksburg, Va. “It took a long time to clear the building for first responders to come inside,” he said. “So there was a long delay in bringing supplies into the building.” First responders often arrive before school shooting situations end and are equipped with materials designed to stop victims from bleeding to death, he said. He claims marketers are behind the move to introduce the kits into schools as they compete for grant money dedicated to improving school safety nationwide. “I have never learned of a situation where this has been applied by anyone working in a school,” he said. “I don't think this is realistic at all.” “EMS and fire have modified their response, and they get tactical gear and units into schools quicker than in the past. So this is just clever marketing,” he said. Instead, he thinks schools should invest resources in “severely underfunded” reporting systems. “We know in recent events that shooters had posted to social media and people were well aware of their intentions, but we didn't have a reporting system that encouraged students to break their code of silence.” WHITE HOUSE LAUNCHES “STOP THE BLEED” CAMPAIGN. In October, 2015, the White House launched its “Stop the Bleed” campaign – a special national initiative designed to provide bystanders with the tools and knowledge to stop life-threatening bleeding. It is intended to cultivate grassroots efforts that encourage bystanders to become trained, equipped, and empowered to help in a bleeding emergency before professional help arrives. DR. PERRODIN'S REASONS FOR CHALLENGING PLACING ADVANCED TRAUMA KITS IN SCHOOLS. David explains five reasons why he is not an advocate of schools spending dollars on medical trauma kits. His primary reason is that staff and students should remain in secured areas until the building is “cleared” by law enforcement. Having staff rush into hallways to treat victims could place them in the direct path of an intruder. He also argues that threat detection research is underfunded and little is known on how to break the youth "code of silence" which prevents youth from bringing forward information that would prevent an attack. FOLLOW DR.
