D.O.A is often referred to as one of the "founders" of hardcore punk, along with bands like Black Flag, Dead Kennedys, Bad Brains and a few others. Kavus frequently collaborates with other artists in the prog and avant-garde genres, and he is co-author of the book Medical Grade Music, along with Steve Davis, a well-known British Snooker player, DJ, and Kavus' band mate in the Utopia Strong. This is a fun, and incredibly well-written autobiography of both men. In general, if you like unconventional psychedelic rock and avant-garde music, Kavus is your man - go out and listen to everything he's involved with. He also has a solo LP out called Hip To The Jag, which is an awesome record. Just to address this up front, Jeff's done dozens of interviews on the controversial comments he's made about bass players learning by academic teaching vs being self- taught. In hopes of helping others heal from a similar trauma, Von shared something quite heavy - an experience he had at 10 years old, when he was sexually molested by a neighbor. On this Von Kopfman interview: Handling Grief & Trauma: “I was driven to succeed because I felt like nothing for a long time…” One of the kindest people you'll meet, Von's passion for music literally saved his life. Von was sexually molested twice, when he was 10 years old. Scared for both himself and his family, he began writing songs and playing music and “The guitar became his counselor.” At age 42, he was able to deal with this trauma through therapy, which helped him immensely. Von also lost his son Jacob in a tragic accident in 2011 which inspired him to write the book Letters for Healing, which was nominated for the Kansas Notable Book Award. Wanting to provide resources for other parents who experience this same tragedy, Von created a not for profit organization called ForTheSurvivors.org, to provide resources to families who have lost a child. On top of all this, Von is an amazing guitarist, and a prolific songwriter. One of THE most moving conversations I've had the pleasure of having.
