Shep Gordon, legendary talent manager of multiple household names from Alice Cooper to Luther Vandross, isn't actually passionate about music. Shep Gordon is a legendary talent manager (he manages Alice Cooper and has done since 1968), film agent, producer, and was the subject of Mike Myers' directorial debut, the 2013 documentary, Supermensch: The Legend of Shep Gordon. As well as managing household names such as Blondie, Eddie Pendergrast, Luther Vandross, to name but a few, the other thing to know about Shep is that he was (according to Emeril Lagasse) single-handedly responsible for creating the concept of ‘celebrity chef'. But, says Shep, none of this was by chance, his destiny was the result of taking action, of using a bit of knowledge and compassion where he could, to get to where he wanted to go. In 1971, Dr. Phil Zimbardo, a new professor at Stanford University, decided to do an experimental two-week study in which he put good people in bad places. This (now) infamous study is known globally as The Stanford Prison Project. “[We] walked them down to the basement where the prison was, and then stripped them naked and took off the blindfold. The first thing they see is themselves, we had a big mirror for this reason, and they see themselves standing helpless and naked. And [the ‘guards'] say: Welcome to Stanford Prison.” Volunteer students were assigned the role of either prisoner or guard - a role about which they knew nothing. There is no sizing up when you meet Dom…  “Young Dom”.“What is the experience of someone in your age, your demographic, in the current state of affairs, the covid, the politics - the younger person's perspective?”Covid started as fun and exciting...  Novelty wore off.  Was enjoying tome with family living at home.  Got depressing...  For her lucky still had social connections.  Saw depression in extended family who are isolated.  The communities that are super impacted more than u  Lower income less privileged.  Showed the glaring reality.   Limited access to healthcare and health professionals in those communities…  Perhaps those who can't stay home form work, essential workers, bigger families to support…Being more aware as she gets older of the different levels of privilege.  This time period has brought out those disparities…    The politics are very overwhelming…  She graduated college in 2016 in journalism.  Into the firestorm of trump…  It was very disheartening.I think I am so inherently hopeful…  Tell me about your social media habits.  I'm mid level I think.  I try to focus more on reading.  Her parents still get the actual NY Times - “I already read that article on the app” she tells her parents.Tools for bringing the mood back up…  Yoga, walking, exercise, meditation.  When I feel myself spiraling I try to take a moment.  Breath…  She likes some acupuncture.  “Tell me about source, god, etc”.  When I'm looking for clarity or an answer or a connection to my intuition…  Yes I'll go there.  Tarot cards, journaling, getting everything out on paper, the clarity emerges.  Was that trusting my intuition or what?  In retrospect “Hey!  That wasn't intuitive.”Did you learn this “intuition skillset” from your parents?  Yes my parents are totally into it…  Dad has done his share of meditation.  Does yoga before he surfs to help keep a level head regarding his job.  Mom's naturally, intuitive mindful, and meditative.  She has learned from both.  Her grandfather was super present…  Everyone liked to say, “He never did yoga but he was always doing yoga”.  He never said anything that wasn't necessary and true, he embodied all the yoga teaching without even knowing it.  He was my greatest yoga teacher even though he didn't do “Yoga”.  What did your grandfather do?  Back in the day he started a business recycling the big 50 gallon barrels.  He was still driving semis until he was 89…  Lots of good conversations until the end with her grandfather.I was doing yoga sometimes twice per day…  They were like “you should do teacher training cause you are always here.”  “That was a great decision I'm so happy I did”.  After college I was actually depressed.  It was such a big transition.  Best friend moved away, a breakup, had to move back in with parents…“One of the best things that CorePower brought me (the yoga studio she went to) was the community.  It's all my best friends I met through that time.”  And the training there was so good she says.  I've been teaching 4 years now and I can add in my own flair now, they gave me such a great base.  Her family support was and is very powerful for me to see.  “Can you speak to that?” She lights up when she talks about her family.   My dad and I have been through many lifetimes together (like past lives).  They take her parents all the time.  I (Mischa) lover her parents, her family, it's beautiful.  My youth and family life was hectic.  It is nice for me to see goodness.  Good soulful people.  CorePower teacher training is very competitive.  What was that your experience?  I wanted to teach by the end of it, but I didn't have the confidence at the end of it.   It sussed out some insecurities in her.  She had to go through tryouts many times…  “I wasn't ready yet”.  Teaching was the best thing to overcome her insecurities.  She's not competitive “I'm tenacious.” IT helped her with insecurities.   Tell me about “extensions”.  “(The teacher) was on me…”  “You're not speaking loud enough”  “You're not being confident enough”.  “It was always things that were not an easy fix”.  “How in the world am I going to fix this?”  “It was nice going back there…  and teaching to the community I know”.  You have a positive outlook for your generation.  “What does that mean to you?”  She believes In general her generation (the Millennials) are accomplishing accomplishing such cool things globally.  And that her generation and the younger generations are so much more compassionate, understanding, and kind.  “and openminded”.  “(The) older generations have these set ideals that are really limiting and sometimes are kind of hate inducing”.  The younger generations are breaking down barriers and pushing to make everyone more accepted.  “The younger generations are… not even able to fathom that idea.”“You need to be a wary consumer of your knowledge.”  “Social media can be used for good things.”  “You are what you chose to consume”.  Be aware of what you consume.  I (Mischa) love the thought that your generation and the generations under you are incapable of thinking the crap that I think.  The importance of food in her family.  They grow a lot of their food.  Her grandparents were farmers or from farm families in LA.  Italian and Mexican decent.  A lot of heritage recipes that they use.  They are very into healthy eating.  Figs from her tree in her lunch as a kid. What's she gonna do with her life? James R. Doty, M.D. is the founder and director of the Center for Compassion and Altruism Research and Education at Stanford University of which His Holiness the Dalai Lama is the founding benefactor.  He works with a variety of scientists from a number of disciplines examining the neural bases for compassion and altruism. He is also a professor in the Department of Neurosurgery at Stanford University School of Medicine. Dr. Doty is an inventor, entrepreneur and philanthropist, having given support to a number of charitable organisations supporting peace initiatives and providing healthcare throughout the world. Dr. Doty has supported research, provided scholarships and endowed chairs at multiple universities. He is on the Board of a number of non-profits and is the former chairman of the Dalai Lama Foundation and the former vice-chair of the Charter for Compassion.  Doty is the Senior Editor of the recently published Oxford Handbook of Compassion Science and is the author of the New York Times bestseller, “Into the Magic Shop: A Neurosurgeon's Quest to Discover the Mysteries of the Brain and the Secrets of the Heart” that has now been translated into 36 languages. Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh (Tay to his students) was a Vietnamese Buddhist monk who spent his life promoting compassion, kindness to others, and being a tireless advocate for human rights, nonviolence, and peace. In Part Two of Tay's episode on Into The Magic Shop, he continues the conversation around suffering and compassion, because says Tay, where there is no suffering, there is no happiness either. “We don't want to send our children to a place where there is no suffering. Because in such a place, you have no chance to learn to be understanding and compassionate. It is by touching suffering, understanding suffering, that you can generate love and compassion.”And to truly understand compassion, says Tay, you have to truly understand love in terms of loving-kindness, compassion, joy, and equanimity. “We cannot do the healing of the world unless we have enough of that energy, understanding, and compassion. Thich Nhat Hanh (Tay to his students) was a Vietnamese Buddhist monk and one of the best-known and respected Zen masters. A peace activist, prolific author, poet, teacher, and founder of Plum Village, Tay is recognized as the main inspiration for “engaged Buddhism”, and is considered by many to be the father of mindfulness. Buddhist monks learned hundreds and hundreds of years ago, (and scientists are only now catching up to) that when we're compassionate, not only does it improve the lives of others, but it's a great benefit to us too. When individuals are compassionate, and this is backed up by science, it's when our physiology works best.But, says Tay, people are afraid of being compassionate towards others in case they are overwhelmed by another's suffering. Dr. Doty and Aaker, who has won numerous awards in the science of marketing and was inducted into the American Marketing Association's Hall of Fame in 2015, discuss the intersection of brand awareness, brand loyalty and compassion.Aaker emphasizes the need for authenticity and passion behind a company's social programs to avoid accusations of tokenism or self-serving behavior. He also gives examples of successful social purpose campaigns, such as Dove's "Real Beauty" campaign, which had a significant impact on women's self-esteem and confidence while also increasing Dove's business.Aaker argues that creating signature programs is the most effective use of resources and can have a significant impact on a company's success. He suggests expanding successful programs and creating a long-term plan to leverage and scale them. The conversation touches on how mindfulness creates a space to pause and choose a response that opens to right intention and compassion. They also mention the danger of mindfulness being used solely for personal gain. Dr. Doty and Shapiro discuss the impact of shame and negative self-talk, the potential role of psychedelics in creating an environment of unconditional love, acceptance and self-exploration, as well as the importance of community; and the power of words and perception. They conclude by saying how difficult circumstances such as poverty, disruptive environments, and unfairness can hinder mindfulness and compassion.
