This week on Black on Black Cinema, the crew returns to discuss the 2026 Boots Riley film, "I Love Boosters." The film follows a group of shoplifters (aka boosters) who take aim at a cutthroat fashion maven by stealing her clothes and reselling them at a lower price, what they call "fashion-forward philanthropy." Narrative overtones of anti-capitalism, push back on the moderate political establishment, the fashion industries exploitation of both its customer base but also the worker creating the products in far off nations for pennies on the dollar. Does Boots Riley's film balance his unique style, in this case, extremely bright colors and an almost anime like aesthetic with a story worth its two hour runtime? The film stars Keke Palmer, Lakeith Stansfield, Naomi Ackie, Taylor Paige, Will Poulter, and Demi Moore.Black on Black Cinema is a long-running podcast featuring in-depth Black movie reviews and frank conversations that matter to the Black community. Candyman and Soul Food star Vanessa Estelle Williams joins Keith Reza on Reza Rifts for a candid conversation spanning more than three decades in Hollywood. From breaking through as Keisha in New Jack City to returning as Anne-Marie McCoy in Candyman 2021, Vanessa opens up about guerrilla filmmaking in Harlem, why the anxiety never goes away for actors, and what movie star status actually means to her. She shares behind-the-scenes stories from One Fine Christmas with Marla Gibbs, directing her own award-winning short film Dance, working with Nia DaCosta and Jordan Peele's Monkeypaw, and the improvised Candyman line that went viral. Then it gets personal: 30 years vegan, the ice cream flavor she would be, what she would tell her 13-year-old self, and her advocacy for children on the autism spectrum. Black on Black Cinema tackles Trump's ongoing assault on American landmarks. The East Wing of the White House was abruptly demolished last October, sparking legal battles over the approval process. Now the Kennedy Center is facing demolition threats over his childish desire to have his name on the building. The historic East Potomac cherry blossom grove; a 1912 gift from Japan is at real risk as Trump terminates a 50-year lease to build a "championship" golf course, with debris from the demolished East Wing literally dumped on the same site. The Lincoln Memorial's Reflecting Pool sits in disarray after a botched, unbid renovation. We ask the harder question: why does this president's legacy consistently manifest as destruction rather than creation? And as Black people, we sit with the real complexity here, many of these landmarks were built by enslaved people, monuments to a history that never fully included us. Is preservation even our fight? We land somewhere honest: this is still our country, our history, our capital, and watching it get torn down for spite and a golf handicap isn't something we're willing to be apathetic about, however complicated our relationship to these buildings really is.The next film to be review will be "I Love Boosters," written and directed by Boots Riley. This week on Black on Black Cinema, the crew returns to break its one rule, NO MORE TYLER PERRY MOVIES. This decision came only because of "Why Did I Get Married Again?" is the final movie(?) in this Tyler Perry trilogy, and the other two in the series were previously reviewed (and we actually enjoyed the first one). So this film follows the children of the main characters in the series and as two of the kids are getting married. The film aims to show the character development of the cast that we've been following for almost 20 years. Does the movie succeed?Black on Black Cinema is a long-running podcast featuring in-depth Black movie reviews and frank conversations that matter to the Black community. Lesley Stahl visits Fred Miller and his family in the large house in southern Virginia that they bought to host family gatherings, only to discover that their own ancestors had once been enslaved on that very property. Miller's sister and cousins scoured historical records and enlisted a genealogist, who found evidence that their great-great-grandparents, Violet and David Miller, were enslaved on the plantation, then called Sharswood. The dilapidated building still standing behind the main house has been identified by archeologists as living quarters for some of the enslaved men and women on the plantation. Buying this home opened a window into the Miller family's past that they had never discussed, and that many African American families struggle to obtain. This is a double-length segment. Shari Finkelstein is the producer. If you think America's top laugh factories are only in New York, Chicago, and LA, think again. Reporting from Amsterdam, correspondent Jon Wertheim takes us inside Boom Chicago, an English-language improv theater founded in the early '90s by two American comics. What sounded like a punchline became a pipeline, launching future stars like Seth Meyers, Jordan Peele, Amber Ruffin, Brendan Hunt and Jason Sudeikis. At a moment when American comedy feels under siege, this beloved Dutch theater keeps proving that funny survives—and travels. Michael Gavshon is the producer.

Black on Black Cinema breaks down Raven-Symone's resurfaced comments questioning whether her own iconic character, Raven Baxter from That's So Raven, was actually Black. On her podcast Tea Time, Raven told Kalen Allen, "Take away the color, make them green, and hear the words. What color are they?," challenging the idea that the show's Blackness was inherent rather than just visual. The internet had immediate and strong reactions. Fans pointed to the show's entire episode about racial profiling, Tonya's locs, Victor's soul food references, Cory's Black history paper storyline, and Della Reese's jazz singer character as clear, undeniable markers of Black identity woven directly into the writing, not just the casting. We break down both sides of this: is Raven making a nuanced point about Blackness not being monolithic, or is she minimizing a show that meant something real to a generation of Black kids who rarely saw themselves centered on Disney Channel? The next film to be reviewed is Tyler Perry's upcoming third movie in the "Why Did I Get Married trilogy." We will be breaking our promise about no more Tyler Perry films to review "Why Did I Get Married Again?" which reunites most of the original cast for one last wild time.Black on Black Cinema is a long-running podcast featuring in-depth Black movie reviews and frank conversations that matter to the Black community. Black on Black Cinema tackles Chameleon Street (1989), Wendell B. Harris Jr.'s astonishing writer-director-star debut based on the true story of Detroit con artist William Douglas Street Jr., who successfully impersonated reporters, lawyers, an Ivy League exchange student, and even a surgeon, performing over 30 real hysterectomies without any medical training. The film won the Grand Jury Prize at Sundance in 1990, beating out Reservoir Dogs, and then inexplicably went without distribution for over a year, effectively burying Harris's career before it started. The concept is genuinely brilliant, a razor-sharp satire about race, class, and identity performance in America, anchored by a magnetic, one-of-a-kind lead performance from Harris himself. But the execution is a different story. The film is tonally unpredictable, structurally chaotic, and at times narratively difficult to follow, swinging wildly between avant-garde experimentation and straightforward biopic beats without clear rhythm. We break down what makes Chameleon Street a genuine one-of-a-kind vision worth seeking out, where the filmmaking gets in its own way, and why this would be ripe for a modern remake with better structure and focus.Black on Black Cinema is a long-running podcast featuring in-depth Black movie reviews and frank conversations that matter to the Black community. Black on Black Cinema breaks down the National Association of Black Journalists giving Stephen A. Smith its "Thumbs Down" award, reserved for commentary the organization considers especially insensitive, stereotypical, or at odds with NABJ's mission around fair representation of the Black community. NABJ's statement specifically cited Smith's recurring pattern of disparaging commentary toward prominent Black women across politics, sports, and media, saying it reinforces harmful narratives and undermines fair, respectful representation. We agree with NABJ here, and we break down exactly why. Smith has spent years building a media empire on saying whatever gets a reaction, and his commentary toward Black women specifically has followed a consistent, well documented pattern that deserves scrutiny; not just from critics online, but from an organization built to hold Black media figures accountable to Black communities. Smith's response was predictably combative, essentially promising retaliation on his platform. He even ran to Fox News' Sean Hannity to make his thoughts known. A curious platform if he is trying to reach Black people...hmmm. We discuss why that reaction proves NABJ's point more than it disproves it, what accountability from within the profession actually looks like, and why Smith's expanding political platform makes this moment even more significant. We also announce the next film to be reviewed which is the 1989 film "Chameleon Street" which follows a social chameleon who impersonates reporters, doctors and lawyers in order to make money. (Film is available to watch on Tubi for free).Black on Black Cinema is a long-running podcast featuring in-depth Black movie reviews and frank conversations that matter to the Black community. Continuing their cycle dedicated to Twins and Doppelgängers, Julian, Madeline and Emilio welcome friend of the pod and always delightful guest Mariquita Reese for their "Two Shot" episode to discuss two recent horror-coded films rich with metaphors and themes pertaining to race in America, Jordan Peele's 2018 film 'Us' and Ryan Coogler's critical and commercial hit 'Sinners' from 2025. Though genre conventions and mainstream thrills are at the heart of both of these films, there is A LOT there to discuss, and the group hones in on the ways dualities present themselves throughout these movies. Dual roles, dichotomies, and conflicting characteristics are abound throughout 'Us' and 'Sinners', and the group finds comparisons between the films regarding how characters process religion, notable scenes that feature music, and antagonists that are there to induce more than just scares. It's a lively discussion about two of the more well regarded films from recent years, and milestone entries from their respective auteur's filmographies. As a third generation Angelino, Hannah Einbinder reps her city hard. “I pledge allegiance to the United States of Los Angeles,” she declared proudly to Chloe on the latest episode of The Run-Through podcast, “I love LA from the tip to the tail.” Right now, Einbinder is making the rounds on one of her biggest press tours to date ahead of the premiere of Jane Schoenbrun's third tongue twister of a film, Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma. Einbinder stars as Kris, a young queer director, who is working on a revival of a slasher horror franchise. Prior to working on the project, slashers were a bit of a blindspot for Einbinder, though she was well-versed in the great horror genre and cited Silent Hill as the scariest movie she's seen. “I see a huge link between comedy and horror,” Einbinder observed, noting that this film is as funny as it is scary, “I think that it kind of creates the same thing in the body, like this buildup of tension with this big release. I think that's why you see so many, like, comedians go in that direction. Like, you look at Jordan Peele and that, to me, makes so much sense.” Along those lines, Einbinder pointed out that Schoenbrun actually has a comedy background and did sketch comedy at UCB many moons ago. The two of them became quite close working on the film, which like Schoenbrun's prior film, I Saw The TV Glow, is a work of autofiction and an allegory for queerness and transition. This film required them to explore topics of dissociation relative to sex. “I feel like many of us have not taken the time to examine how universal it is.” Einbinder hasn't yet settled on her look for the premiere, but she is already considering how she is going to accessorize. She intends to visit a New York City based nail artist who uses the moniker claws by joy to get a bloody, slasher style manicure. As a major Hacks fan, Chloe also brought up her favorite duo: Ava Daniels and Deborah Vance. While the show has reached its conclusion, she and Jean Smart are in regular contact and sharing memes. “She's absolutely out of control,” Einbinder said of Smart's meme sharing tendencies. Einbinder won her first Emmy for the series back in the fall and when asked where she displays it, she sheepishly revealed that she keeps it tucked away. She explained that her grandfather was a decorated war hero and when he passed, the family found all of his medals in a manila envelope in a drawer. “And so I kinda figure if, like, if that guy's not putting his stuff out,” she said trailing off, “I thought he was so swag for doing that.” The Run-Through with Vogue is your go-to podcast where fashion meets culture. Dracula, The Hills Have Eyes, Nope, Maximum Overdrive, and Deep Blue Sea headline this episode of This Week in Horror History, covering July 20 through July 26. Summer horror gets seductive, sun-scorched, mechanical, extraterrestrial, and shark-infested as we explore gothic vampires, desert survival horror, reverse-horror gaming, Jordan Peele's terrifying vision of spectacle, Stephen King's killer-machine apocalypse, and genetically engineered sharks loose inside an underwater laboratory. Inside this episode:July 20, 1979 — Dracula releases in the United StatesFrank Langella gives Count Dracula a dangerous combination of gothic romance, theatrical charm, and supernatural menace. This version of Bram Stoker's vampire proves that evil does not always need to force its way through the door. Sometimes it gets invited inside.July 22, 1977 — The Hills Have Eyes premieres in Tucson, ArizonaWes Craven turns an ordinary family road trip into a brutal desert survival nightmare. When a shortcut leaves the Carter family stranded far from civilization, the open landscape becomes a trap filled with heat, isolation, violence, and another family watching from the hills.July 23, 2020 — Carrion releasesThis reverse-horror video game flips the familiar monster formula by letting players become the creature. A growing mass of teeth, tendrils, and hunger escapes through a research facility while terrified scientists and guards discover that containment has completely failed.July 22, 2022 — Nope releases in U.S. theatersJordan Peele turns the sky into a haunted house in a strange and ambitious collision of UFO horror, creature-feature spectacle, Hollywood exploitation, western imagery, animal behavior, and the dangerous human need to capture the impossible on camera.Deep-Cut Spotlight — Maximum OverdriveStephen King steps behind the camera for one of the loudest and most gloriously unhinged killer-machine movies of the 1980s. After Earth passes through the tail of a comet, trucks, vending machines, arcade games, lawn equipment, and other everyday technology suddenly turn against humanity. At the Dixie Boy truck stop, a group of survivors becomes trapped by eighteen-wheelers that appear to have developed personalities, grudges, and a deep hatred of human beings. With a goblin-faced truck, massive explosions, diner panic, homicidal machinery, and AC/DC blasting through the chaos, Maximum Overdrive remains a greasy, absurd, and unforgettable piece of Stephen King horror history.Horror Birthdays This Week: Diana Rigg, Josh Hartnett, Willem Dafoe, and Lynda Carter enter the birthday roll, bringing connections to Theatre of Blood, Last Night in Soho, Halloween H20, The Faculty, 30 Days of Night, Trap, Shadow of the Vampire, The Lighthouse, Nosferatu, and The Initiation of Sarah.Weekly Recommendation — Deep Blue Sea Researchers inside an isolated underwater facility genetically engineer mako sharks while searching for a medical breakthrough. Unfortunately, making enormous predators more intelligent turns out to be a catastrophically bad idea. Packed with violent storms, flooding corridors, underwater laboratories, corporate hubris, giant sharks, and one of the most memorable shock moments in 1990s horror, Deep Blue Sea remains a fast, fun, and wonderfully ridiculous summer creature feature. From Dracula and The Hills Have Eyes to Carrion, Nope, Maximum Overdrive, and Deep Blue Sea, this week in horror history proves that summer terror can wait inside a gothic mansion, watch from the desert hills, escape from a laboratory, descend from the sky, take control of an eighteen-wheeler, or circle silently beneath the water.

This week on Fright Flick FMK, we're watching and reacting to Abruptio — a surreal horror-thriller performed with lifelike puppets, and yes, it looks just as unsettling as that sounds. The movie follows Les Hackel, a guy already having a rough time, who wakes up to find an explosive device implanted in his neck. From there, he is forced into a series of violent, bizarre, and increasingly twisted missions while trying to figure out who is controlling the nightmare around him. And the entire thing is done with puppets. Not cute puppets. Not fun puppets. Not “let's all learn a lesson” puppets. These are creepy, lifelike, dead-eyed nightmare puppets voiced by a wild cast that includes James Marsters, Robert Englund, Jordan Peele, Hana Mae Lee, Christopher McDonald, and Sid Haig. Fright Flick FMK is a horror movie watch-along and reaction show for fans who like their scary movies with attitude, laughs, bad decisions, and zero fake polish. We kick back, get elevated, pour a drink, press play, and talk through the chaos in real time. For Abruptio, we're looking at the puppet madness, the violence, the weirdness, the voice cast, the “what the hell am I watching?” factor, and whether this movie is actually a bold horror oddity or just a fever dream someone put strings on. At the end, we rate it with The Only Rating System That Matters: Marry It means the movie is a keeper — the kind of horror flick you can grow old with and keep coming back to. F@#k It means it's a good time when the mood hits — maybe not forever material, but definitely worth another late-night visit. Kill It means the movie gave us a good time, we might tell our friends about it, but we are ghosting it in the morning. So pull up a chair, pour whatever you're pouring, light whatever you're lighting, and join the Fright Flick Family. Sip. Smoke. Scream. Rate. Drop your FMK rating for Abruptio in the comments: Are you giving it Marry It, F@#k It, or Kill It?
This week on Black on Black Cinema we break down the collapse of Graham Platner's Maine Senate campaign and why none of us were surprised. For months, white leftists rallied behind Platner despite a tattoo associated with WW2 fascism, resurfaced posts disparaging veterans and sexual assault survivors on Reddit, and troubling accounts from past relationships. None of it mattered until an ex-girlfriend came forward with a serious sexual assault allegation, and only then did the Democratic Party's left wing scramble to distance themselves and Platner suspended his campaign. We ask the real question: why did it take THIS allegation to move people who already had every reason to walk away months ago? We break down how "winning at all costs" politics let a deeply flawed candidate skate through a primary while the warning signs sat in plain sight, and what this says about who gets the benefit of the doubt and for how long. Then we announce our next film: Stepfather (2026), Chris Stokes' Tubi thriller starring Taye Diggs as a man obsessed with building the "perfect family." We preview what to expect from Diggs' performance and Stokes' latest entry into his growing catalog of Tubi originals.Black on Black Cinema is a long-running podcast featuring in-depth Black movie reviews and frank conversations that matter to the Black community. Join Ray and I as we talk about “HIM”, the movie I had JUST finished minutes before we did this chat. We talk what we think the movie was getting at with its symbolism and kinda nerding out about Jordan Peele and the worlds that he's created over his movies, and if they're possibly a shared multiverse? From there Ray opens up about the success of his solo career, how when we last talked it was sort of a last ditch attempt at a career in making music. The challenges of releasing a song a week for a year. Dealing with the success of his solo material, while also learning to deal with comments that he was either an industry plant or wasn't even a real human being but AI. We talk about how the success of those songs allowed Ray to really dive deeper into himself to get to some of his most personal songs yet, including one that he wrote for his dad that he hasn't shown him yet. We also dive into how hard it is for each of us to know how much of ourselves to put into our creative outlets due to backlash from strangers. Ray talks about some big life changes happening for him, partying with Gary Busey and more in this chat. For over a century, Alfred Hitchcock has remained one of cinema’s most influential directors. Known as the Master of Suspense, this visionary filmmaker directed more than fifty films over six decades. His thriller “The Lodger” (1927) marked the start of his signature style, which was later exemplified in classic films like “Vertigo” (1958), “North by Northwest” (1959), “Psycho” (1960), and “The Birds” (1963). Hitchcock’s work received tremendous success and critical acclaim. While he never won the competitive Academy Award for Best Director, he received five Oscar nominations, two Golden Globes, the Irving G. Thalberg Memorial Award, a BAFTA Fellowship, multiple lifetime achievement awards, and two stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Nine of his films are preserved in the United States National Film Registry. His mastery of tension, innovative camera techniques, and psychological depth continue to inspire and influence modern filmmakers such as Christopher Nolan, Jordan Peele, and Bong Joon Ho. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0NUJN1fq0Sc Drawing on new archival research, previously unpublished interviews, and a rigorous examination of key biographies, “A Century of Hitchcock” challenges the long-standing narratives that have shaped Hitchcock’s legacy. Author Tony Lee Moral revisits controversial claims regarding Hitchcock’s alleged abuses, scrutinizing biographer Donald Spoto’s interpretations—particularly Spoto’s portrayal of the director’s relationship with actress Tippi Hedren. With his analysis of Spoto’s 1980 interview of Hedren, Moral reveals for the first time how one key document contradicts decades of exaggeration. In this comprehensive reappraisal of Hitchcock’s career, Moral encourages readers to explore the complexities of creative collaboration and the risks of relying on a single biographical narrative. Marking one hundred years since Hitchcock’s first film, “The Pleasure Garden”, and fifty years since his last film, “Family Plot”, Moral reexamines the director’s cinematic brilliance, storytelling mastery, creative partnerships, and controversies, offering a fresh perspective on Hitchcock’s legacy in the post-#MeToo era.
Pack your bags and head to small town Champaign, Illinois with Producer Brandon for one last year of the Roger Ebert Overlooked Film Festival, affectionately known to movie-lovers as Ebertfest. Brought back for a final year, festival organizers Chaz Ebert and Nate Kohn programmed a lineup of modern classics and under-the-radar films audiences may have missed. First, Brandon sits down with actress Betty Gabriel following a screening of her film, Get Out (now coming up on its 10-year anniversary). Critically acclaimed for her role as housekeeper-with-a-disturbing-secret Georgina, Betty reflects on being a part of Jordan Peele's beloved horror-social satire's legacy. The conversation then pivots to Betty's current and upcoming projects in television and film. Get Out is currently available to stream on HBO Max.Next, Brandon is joined by writer-director Tracie Laymon & actor French Stewart of the Barbie Ferreira & John Leguizamo dramedy, Bob Trevino Likes It. The film follows a lonely young woman (Ferreira) who strikes up a relationship online with a stranger (Leguizamo) who shares the name of her own narcissistic father (Stewart). After premiering at the South by Southwest Film Festival, the crowd-pleasing film received both the Narrative Feature Grand Jury Award and the Audience Award for Best Narrative Feature. Tapping into her own experience with her own father, Tracie discusses the semiautobiographical nature of her film and how the personal themes and narrative have resonated with audiences from all walks of life. In this joint interview, French Stewart provides insight into his role as an unsupportive father and how he approached playing this antagonistic character with pathos and three-dimensionality. Tracie then touches on how following the worldwide success of Barbie, Mattel Studios hired her to write and direct a live-action film based on the discontinued 90's cult toy, Tony The Tattooed Man. Bob Trevino Likes It is now streaming on Hulu and Disney+Watch the trailerTo read more about Ebertfest ‘The Last Dance,' visit: ‘The Last Dance' Ends a Beautiful, Impactful Run for the Long-time Roger Ebert Film FestivalIn the famous words of Ebertfest founder, Roger Ebert: “the balcony is closed”Support the show---Subscribe to learn more about filmmaking, production, media makers, creator resources, visual storytelling, and every aspect that brings film, television, and video projects from concepts to our screens. Black on Black Cinema announces our next full review: Above the Rim (1994), the final entry in Barry Michael Cooper's Harlem Trilogy. Directed by Jeff Pollack and starring Duane Martin, Tupac Shakur, Leon, Marlon Wayans, Bernie Mac, and Wood Harris. Above the Rim follows high school basketball star Kyle Watson torn between Shep, a fallen athlete trying to redeem himself, and Birdie, a dangerous drug dealer who happens to be Shep's brother. Tupac Shakur's final theatrical film before his 1996 death is reason enough to revisit it.Then we get into the real conversation: Donald Trump has become everything racists feared a Black president would be. Barack Obama had to be practically perfect to even be considered; Harvard Law, Constitutional law professor, decorated Senator, devoted husband and father, scandal-free, measured, dignified. Every box checked. Meanwhile Trump arrived with business failures, fraud convictions, hush money payments, multiple affairs, and a career built on corruption. Ta-Nehisi Coates called Trump "the first white president;" not merely because he's white, but because his entire political existence hinges on the fact of a Black president. His campaign started with birtherism. Coates wrote: "It is as if the white tribe united to say — if a Black man can be president, then any white man, no matter how fallen, can be president." We unpack what that means in 2026.Black on Black Cinema is a long-running podcast featuring in-depth Black movie reviews and frank conversations that matter to the Black community. This week Black on Black Cinema finally gives Sugar Hill (1994) the deep analysis it deserves. Directed by Leon Ichaso and written by Barry Michael Cooper — the architect behind New Jack City and Above the Rim — Sugar Hill is the second and most emotionally dramatic entry in Cooper's Harlem Trilogy. Wesley Snipes as Roemello Skuggs, a high-level Harlem drug dealer who wants out. He's got money, power, a woman he loves in Melissa (Theresa Randle), and a future waiting for him if his volatile brother Raynathan (Michael Wright) and the game itself will let him leave. We break down what makes Sugar Hill flawed but still underrated. Cooper's layered screenplay that tries to give Roemello genuine intellectual depth (Georgetown scholarship-eligible, chess player, art collector), Michael Wright's explosive performance as the brother who can't escape the past, and Leon Ichaso's atmospheric direction that turns Harlem into a character of its own. Terence Blanchard's jazz-inflected gives the film a serious connection to Spike Lee's own work. Clarence Williams III steals scenes effortlessly, and Ernie Hudson has a good time as a villain this time around. We discuss why it got overshadowed by New Jack City, how it works to keep the idea of Wesley Snipes being one of the coolest dudes in this era. Sugar Hill has its flaws from scenes that in hindsight are oddly placed (potentially post edit bay issues), some characters who aren't as explored as actual human beings, but there is still something here worth talking about and the effort of making a gentlemen gangster film with the same actor who was notorious for playing one of the most brutal gangsters in the 90s era is something to admire here.Black on Black Cinema is a long-running podcast featuring in-depth Black movie reviews and frank conversations that matter to the Black community. Black on Black Cinema announces our next film review: Sugar Hill (1994), directed by Leon Ichaso and written by Barry Michael Cooper; the second film in his legendary Harlem Trilogy alongside New Jack City and Above the Rim. Wesley Snipes stars as Roemello Skuggs, a high-level Harlem drug dealer who decides to walk away from the life to start fresh with his girlfriend Melissa (Theresa Randle), only to discover that leaving isn't something the game allows. Co-starring Michael Wright, Clarence Williams III, Ernie Hudson, and Abe Vigoda. Then we get into it: Reparations for Black Americans. We agree it should happen, the historical, economic, and moral case is ironclad. But what does repayment actually look like in practice? Direct cash payments? Targeted investment? Tax free benefits? Educational and business funds? And who qualifies for it? Is it just direct descendants of enslaved people only, or a broader class of Black Americans impacted by systemic racism? We break down the competing frameworks, the political obstacles, and what an honest reparations conversation looks like beyond the talking point.Black on Black Cinema is a long-running podcast featuring in-depth Black movie reviews and frank conversations that matter to the Black community. Black on Black Cinema dives deep into Is God Is (2026), Aleshea Harris' feature directorial debut adapted from her Obie Award-winning stage play. Starring Kara Young as "The Rough One" and Mallori Johnson as "The Quiet One," the film follows twin sisters bearing the disfiguring burn scars of a childhood tragedy, ordered by their bedridden mother to kill the abusive father who destroyed their family. With Janelle Monáe, Sterling K. Brown, Vivica A. Fox, Erika Alexander, and Mykelti Williamson rounding out the cast, and Tessa Thompson and Janicza Bravo producing. We analyze Harris' genre-blending, part western grind house, part noir, part dark comedy; and how she translates her stage play to cinema. We break down how the film confronts generational trauma, absent and intimate partner violence, and the totality of Black womanhood with brutal honesty. Sterling K. Brown cast against type as a villain is inspired. Black women's rage played straight, not for laughs or shame, is the film's greatest achievement.Black on Black Cinema is a long-running podcast featuring in-depth Black movie reviews and frank conversations that matter to the Black community.
